Sunny Sweeny-Summer of 1987
At about 10:30 on the morning of August 31, 1987, Rory Collins went to visit his friends James and Sunny Sweeney. The Sweeneys were brothers and sisters in their twenties. James was twenty-three, and his sister was twenty-eight. They lived with their mother, Grace Sweeney, in a patio garden apartment in Ashville, Maryland, in Baltimore County. When Mr. Collins approached the apartment, he noticed that the patio door was ajar. He looked into the living room and saw Sunny's face lying face down in a pool of blood. The cause of death was discovered later.__Sunny was a stunning young lady with a slim build, a lovely button nose, an oval face, long, wavy auburn-brown hair, and stunning, piercing green eyes.Everyone in the room turned to look at Sunny when she entered because she was so incredibly attractive in her own unique way.But Sunny was even more beautiful on the inside because she loved unconditionally and cared deeply. She was vibrant and full of life. You could always find her near the water, splashing around and having fun with her friends.__Sunny was a 1977 graduate of Raven High School. She began taking classes at a Baltimore County community college in interior design. However, a serious automobile accident interrupted her studies when she was twenty. Plastic surgeons had to operate on her face and shoulder to repair the damage from the accident. Sunny went through hell for a year but bounced back. Sunny's mother, Grace, has always bounced back too, finding the strength to survive her husband's death and her family's financial hardships. The Sweeney's always pulled through!__It was a hot summer day on a Friday towards the end of June, and Sunny was just about to get off work.Sunny worked at a furniture store called Buttons. She could not wait to get off and have a drink with her coworker friend, Beth Clark.Beth was funny and cursed like a sailor at times. She had long, straight, jet black hair and loved to wear red or black clothing. Sunny could always count on Beth to make her laugh, and when she needed an extra hand at work, Beth was there for her.Beth lived in an apartment a couple blocks down from Sunny, although she was raised in the countryside that was just a couple minutes from Ashville. Beth frequently spoke fondly of the times she spent growing up in the countryside and enjoyed spending time outdoors when she could.__At the end of the workday, Beth walked up to Sunny and said, "By ten o'clock, I'll pick you up." "Put on something sexy, because we're going to meet some hot guys! "Sunny replied, "Gosh, Beth, does it always have to be about men? I just want to dance the night away! But don’t worry, I will wear something sexy! "Beth laughed and replied, "Of course it's always about men!"__When Sunny got home, she had dinner with her brother James and her mother Grace. Sunny’s brother had dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He was a bit strange but super friendly and nice. While passing the spaghetti to James, Sunny asked, "I’m going to a bar tonight with my friend Beth from work." "Want to tag along?"After taking a bite from his plate, James replied, "I don’t want to impose on your girls' night out, but I'd love to meet your new friend that you talk so much about."Sunny announced, "She's a crazy one, but you will love her!"Mrs. Sweeney's mouth curled into a smile as she said to both of her children, "I love that you both share friends and spend so much time together." She then continued, "And Sunny, darling, you're such a good sister."James replied, "It will always be that way." "We are two peas in a pod.As Sunny put her fork down on her plate, she grinned, wiped her mouth with a cloth napkin, and said, "Yup! "__After dinner, she went into her room to get dressed. She picked out tapered jeans and a pastel pink tank top, got dressed, and curled her hair into a big, glamorous style.Sunny called out to her brother, "Ready to go?"James replied, "Let's do this!"Sunny smiled, grabbed her purse and apartment keys, and they walked outside.__Shortly after Beth arrived in her beat-up old car, Sunny and James jumped in the back seat.Beth said, "This must be the famous little brother James." It's so nice to meet you! "Sunny smiled and said, "Yes, this is him!"__They arrived at the bar and went inside. It was a nice little bar with a small dance floor, and they played the best eighties jams. After a couple of drinks, Sunny, James, and Beth hit the dance floor. Beth was the type of girl who would walk up to any guy and start dancing with them, and that’s just what she did.James was the shy type. He stood close to a corner, bopping his head to the beat.Sunny danced with herself. She would sway to the beat and move her fingers through the air. While James blended into the background, Sunny embraced her surroundings and let loose. She closed her eyes and let the music take over her body.Sunny stood out and inspired everyone who saw her dance because of the way she moved her delicate frame. She was like an angel, with the grace of a dove and the strength of an eagle.Sunny's lack of interest in men, however, irritated Beth. They all watched her, but Sunny seemed oblivious to the attention, focusing solely on the joy of dancing.Beth couldn't understand why Sunny didn't want to date or find a partner. She thought that Sunny was wasting her beauty and charm by not using them to attract a man. But Sunny was content with her life, and she didn't need anyone else to make her happy. She found joy in dancing and expressing herself through movement, and that was enough for her. As she twirled around the dance floor, she felt free and alive, with no worries or fears holding her back. And even though James admired her from afar, he knew that he could never match the passion and energy that Sunny brought to every performance on the dance floor. But that was his cool older sister—the person he looked up to the most! While Sunny was dancing, Beth pulled her aside and said, "Fuck! You can have anyone in the room. ""I just don't understand!"Sunny smiled and shrugged, unconcerned.Beth then takes a deep breath and continues, "Why don't you use your beauty to find a nice gentleman? "Sunny replied, with a laugh, "Because I just want to dance and get lost in the music. " "I don’t need a man right now, and let's face it, no one in this bar is a gentleman!"Beth replied back, "You have a point there!" as she grinned at Sunny, shaking her head slightly in amusement.__The next day was a dazzlingly hot Saturday, so James and Sunny made plans with their friends Rory Collins and Finn Gibson to swim at the Beaver Dam swimming hole.Finn was a big teddy bear. He had a short and stocky build with a bushy beard and kind eyes that made him look like he was always smiling. He was great friends with James, lived in a different part of Asheville than the Sweeneys, and treated Sunny like a sister. Rory was a friend that lived in Baltimore City, and he came down to visit every now and then. He was a gentleman, a looker with blonde surfer-like hair, but Sunny never seemed to be into him that way, as most girls would fall head over heels for the boy with silky blonde locks . Despite this, Rory and Sunny had a deep connection, as they shared a love for music and would often spend hours jamming out together. Rory was also an avid reader and would recommend books to Sunny that she would devour in a matter of days. Their conversations were always deep and thought-provoking, and Sunny appreciated how Rory challenged her to think outside the box. Even though they lived in different cities, their friendship remained strong over the years, and they made sure to catch up whenever possible.__Ashville is a small area of mostly apartment complexes up and down Cranbrook Road.Everyone knew everyone, and that's why Sunny had a tight knit group of friends.—-The Sweeney siblings and two friends met up at the gorgeous dam and enjoyed the freshwater quarry.Sunny looked amazing in her pink bikini. The sun struck her auburn hair, giving it a radiant shine.Sunny grabbed on to the infamous rope swing and yelled, " See you suckers later!" She swung and fell into the quarry's water.Finn was the next person to jump after her, saying, "Wait for me!" and "I'm ready to make a splash too!" With a big smile, Finn grabbed the rope and swung across, hooting and hollering as he landed in the water. After Finn swung in, it was Rory's turn for the infamous rope. As he swung, he closed his eyes and felt the wind rush past him. When he opened them again, he saw the clear blue sky above him and the sparkling water below. The thrill of the swing made his heart race, and he let out a whoop of excitement as he let go and dropped into the water. His golden blonde hair soaked up the water as he surfaced, grinning from ear to ear.Everyone laughed, and then it was James’s turn. However, he was afraid of heights, so he got into the quarry the regular way , by climbing down the rocky slope. After watching his friends swing from the rope, he couldn't help but feel left out. He wished he had the courage to join in on the fun. But as much as he wanted to, his fear held him back. Instead, he contented himself with wading in the shallow end of the quarry and watching his friends have a blast. And as the day wore on, James grew more and more frustrated with himself. He didn't want to be known as the scaredy-cat of the group.Sunny swam closer to the shallow end of the water to be closer to her brother.Sunny lightly gave her brother James a hug and said, "I know it can be scary, but remember, high times and good times equal fun! " She then smiled while pulling her wet long hair out of her face and continued saying, One day you’re going to have to swing from that rope! "James replied, "One day I will have the guts!"Despite his fear, James knew that eventually he'd have to face it head-on and find the courage to swing from the rope.Suddenly, Finn put his hand on Sunny's shoulder and said, "Sorry to break up such a sweet sibling moment, but I’m going to have to do this!"Finn picked up Sunny and threw her back into the water with a playful splash. Sunny emerged from the water, laughing and spluttering. James couldn't help but smile at the sight of his sister having fun.Everyone laughed and continued to enjoy their day by the water. As they lounged in the grass, soaking up the sun, James couldn't help but feel grateful for his friends and family. He knew that life was full of ups and downs, but moments like these made it all worth it. They reminded him that good times and bad times were all part of the journey and that it was important to cherish every moment along the way. With a smile on his face, James decided that he was ready to face his fear and take on that rope swing. After all, what's life without a little adventure? With a deep breath, James took a running start and launched himself off the edge of the cliff. As he swung through the air, he felt an exhilarating rush of adrenaline that made him both scared and alive.James murmured to himself, "Holy sh*t."The wind whipped through his hair and the sun beat down on his face, but he didn't care. In that moment, nothing else mattered except for the pure joy of living in the present. As he landed safely in the water below, James couldn't help but feel proud of himself for facing his fear head-on.Despite being on the slower side in terms of education, he knew that life would continue to present him with obstacles, but he was prepared to face them head-on with courage and determination.Everyone was so proud of James for overcoming his fear and taking the leap. His family and friends cheered him on from the water, their faces beaming with admiration. That Saturday, the Sweeney's siblings and their two friends had a great time swimming in the 200-foot-deep quarry. After jumping off floating platforms, rolling logs, and diving, the fun quickly came to an end, and everyone returned to their homes. That night, as Sunny got into her bed, a thunderstorm came. It was the most harmonious sound ever made after a long day of swimming. With a loud bang, sleek crackles, and a peaceful rumble, Sunny went into a deep slumber as the sound of rain pitter-pattered on the rooftop like a soothing lullaby.Sunny had been sound asleep in her bed that morning when the phone started to ring.Sunny woke up and took the call. It was her best friend, Layla Bailey.Layla and Sunny have been friends for a long time. They attended Raven High and were pretty much inseparable. They had been through so much together, from the rough patches of their teenage years to the highs and lows of adulthood.Layla was a tomboy with chin-length brunette hair and hazel eyes. A lot of people believed that she was gay, but it was never really confirmed, and sometimes Sunny got a stigma hanging around her.Layla had called Sunny to make plans for a small Ocean City trip for the first weekend of August. The two friends had always loved spending time together, especially at the beach. They would spend hours lounging in the sun, playing in the waves, and exploring the boardwalk. After taking a deep bong hit, Sunny replied to Layla on the phone, "Yes!" I can't wait to be at the beach with you. " Sunny loved her morn
By one p.m., they had left for Verona. They had a lovely ride up there, and as they were passing through, it seemed as though they had suddenly traveled back in time to a calm, serene location free of noise and apartment complexes. Sunny was filled with joy and anticipation as she looked out the window, taking in the view of all the farmland.__The two young ladies got out of the car and walked up to Beth's parents' house. It was a beautiful colonial house with gorgeous white shutters. Sunny couldn't help but feel a wave of excitement as she looked at the fields of wildflowers and corn stalks that surrounded the area. As they went inside, Beth asked Sunny, "Let's have some cranberry and vodka drinks; my parents always have that around." Sunny couldn't resist the offer and eagerly agreed. The two friends were sitting in the living room on a vintage, cozy couch with a floral print, enjoying their drinks and catching up on each other's lives. By three o'clock, the girls had five glasse
It was a beautiful Friday on July thirty-first. This was the morning that Sunny and Layla headed down to Ocean City. Sunny's favorite place to be was Ocean City, a resort town about three hours away from Ashville. It was Sunny’s favorite place to be, so she was super excited.Ocean City is a great place to unwind because it has miles of beachfront and a wooden boardwalk lined with restaurants, shops, and hotels.__The two best friends arrived in Ocean City on 9th Street at their hotel. It was a white and aqua-colored building called Starfish Royal.Sunny and Layla went into the room, where there were two colorful beds, a small table for eating, and a balcony that overlooked the beach. They were in awe of the beauty and immediately ran out onto the balcony, taking in a deep breath of the salty ocean air. They were transfixed by the beach view as they stood there and watched families playing in the sand, kids creating sandcastles, and surfers riding the waves. The sound of seagulls fil
Sunny and Layla then got out of the shower and put clothes on. Sunny was smiling uncontrollably as her hands were shaking. She felt butterflies in her stomach, and her surroundings felt like heaven. Layla felt like she was walking on clouds, as she felt like the luckiest person in the whole universe, but she was also afraid since they had been best friends since high school. It was a whole mix of emotions because Layla had been wanting to kiss Sunny for a long time.___Sunny and Layla went about their day like nothing ever happened as they took a walk on the boardwalk, got a bite to eat, played some arcade games, and then sat down together on a bench that looked upon the boardwalk and ocean.Layla looked at Sunny as she said, "I love that feeling when you've been lying on the beach all day and then take a shower before you go out." " I feel like I’m on top of the world!"Layla then nervously added, "Can we talk about what happened in the shower?"Sunny had a dull expression as she sa
Sunny's point of viewI'm lying here in bed with my very best friend, and she means so much to me. Did I make a mistake? These thoughts keep swirling in my mind, but deep down, I know that what we have is special. Our bond goes beyond romance. My nose is stuffy. I hate this feeling, but I’m with Layla, and that makes me happy. She's always been there for me, through thick and thin. I do, however, despise her at times. After the car accident, I was left with scars, and she doesn't have a scratch on her. It's not fair, and I can't help but feel a pang of resentment toward her. But then, I remember the countless nights she spent by my side in the hospital, holding my hand and reassuring me that everything would be okay. She is my rock, my pillar of strength, and my biggest cheerleader. I just love her.Sunny squeezes Layla tight:She smells so good, like coconut sunblock. Mmmm!_______Sunny then starts thinking about her father and how she
After they had finished their appetizers, Sunny was prepared to share the truth about her father.Sunny looked at Layla with watering eyes as she said, "My father committed suicide when I was only 5 years old." He was married to another woman and to my mother. You see, he couldn't take the idea of being caught. He had a beautiful family. My brother and I needed him. There had to be another way, but he just left us. " Layla listened attentively, her heart aching for Sunny's pain. She reached across the table and gently held Sunny's hand, offering comfort and support. "I'm so sorry, Sunny," Layla whispered softly. "That must have been incredibly difficult for you and your family." Sunny nodded, tears streaming down her face. "It was devastating," she replied, her voice trembling. Layla looked at Sunny with kind eyes as she said, "I’m sure he loved you very much."Sunny then said, "If he loved any of us, he wouldn't have killed himself. “ It was a carbon monoxide suicide from car exha
It was Tuesday morning, and Sunny had to return to work after an interesting Ocean City trip. Sunny had a lot on her mind, and she was queasy about what she had done with Layla on vacation, but she knew in her heart that they would always be best friends no matter the circumstances. Sunny decided not to let her thoughts get the best of her and went about her day.As she walked into the door of Buttons Furniture Store, there was her friend Beth, who ran up to Sunny and said, "Hey girl, where have you been? "Sunny came in for a hug as she said, "I went to Ocean City with my friend Layla. ““You'll have to meet her sometime!”Beth replied, "That explains the sunburn on your cheeks—that darn porcelain skin!"Sunny laughed: "I rarely ever tan! "Sunny replied, "I would love to!"Just then, Mr
The next morning, Sunny got up and was ready to go to work.__Button's Furniture Store:Sunny looked at Beth and said, "I hope you're not offended, but my brother and our friend Finn would like to join along."Beth replied back, "That’s fine with me." Is Finn a girl? "Sunny laughed loudly as she said, "Finn is a dude."Just then, a family came in looking for a new couch. There was a little girl, a mom, and a dad. Sunny looked at the family with a welcoming smile as she said, "Welcome to Buttons. Need any help finding the perfect couch?"The little girl with the family pointed at Sunny as she said, "Mommy, that lady is so pretty! "The mom smiled at her child as she said, "She sure is, but it's not nice to point it out. "The mom then looked at Sunny as she replied, "We are looking for a green couch, something comfy. "Sunny smiled at the little girl as she said, "You are very pretty too. You must be a princess! "The little girl's eyes widened with excitement as she exclaimed, "Real
August 30th (Sunday)At Jaspers, you would usually run into your close friends, old high school classmates, and new faces eager to have a good time. They played a variety of music: classic rock, alternative, and some pop. This club definitely met a lot of people's needs in the area, and the best part is that it was nearby, so you did not have to travel outside of Ashville to have a good time.Sunny had taken a cab to meet up with Finn at Jasper’s to have some drinks. She wanted to have some fun, as the next day her family would be returning from Ocean City. And she hoped deeply that, by chance, Layla would join them.__The sound of Sunny's favorite song started playing as soon as she walked through Jasper's in her little black dress. The atmosphere was lively and packed with people dancing and enjoying themselves. August 19th:Sunny was battling heartbreak all through her work shift, with Beth being different than she usually is. Sunny couldn't help but notice Beth's distant and cold behavior, which only added to her sadness. As the day went on, Sunny wondered what could have caused such a sudden change in her friend. And then it hit her, as she had thought to herself, "I really hope she did not see Layla and I kiss on her balcony." She then reconsidered, saying, No, there is no way she saw that." Sunny's mind raced with worry as she replayed the memory. When Sunny arrived home from work, she soon saw that her brother was doing much better and that his cough was nearly gone, which meant he would have a successful Ocean City trip.Later that evening, Grace Sweeny pulled James and Sunny aside to have a talk, as she was seeing someone new and wanted to share the news with them. Grace explained that she had met someone and wanted to take things slowly. It was a difficult conversation to have, espec

She leans in closer and says, "That sounds absolutely terrifying." She comforts Sunny and tells her everything is going to be okay. However, Layla happens to have a lot on her mind, so she gears the conversation in a different direction. "Luckily, you're safe now, and I'm here for you," Layla reassures Sunny. "But I actually have something I want to talk to you about."Sunny nods and says, "Oh,
August 15th (Saturday)Finn came by to visit James, Sunny, and, of course, sweet Mrs. Sweeney. James happened to have a bad summer cold. He kept coughing and sneezing as his mother looked at him and said, "Boy! That awful cold better be gone before the trip, and I sure hope I don’t catch it! "Finn then looked at Mrs. Sweeney as he asked, "When are you guys going?" “And for how long? “Mrs. Sweeney kindly answered, "From the twenty-eighth to the thirtieth. Friday, August 14th Toby went to Beth's parents' house in Verona, knocked on the door, and showed up with beautiful red roses in hand. When Beth opened the door, she was happy to see Toby, but she played it off like she did not know what was going on as she said, "Why thank you, Toby, these are beautiful, but what are they for? "Toby giggled and replied, "Silly goose, I talked to Sunny, and I think you know what is happening? “Beth wiped the sweat from the top of her forehead. She was feeling nervous. Finn had shortly followed Blake outside and asked why he looked so pissed off. Blake glanced at Finn, his frustration evident in his eyes as he replied, "Because she's a fucking bitch, that’s why."Finn then solemnly said, "Hey now, that's my friend you're talking about! “Blake then slightly laughed and said, "She’s a bitch! "That's some petty ass shit. " Finn raised an eyebrow, taken aback by Blake's harsh words. Finn stood there silently after the comment Blake had made, but he did have one too many drinks and started laughing loudly. Blake looked at Finn with a smirk as he said, "What’s so funny? "Finn laughed and replied, "I honestly don’t know. Maybe it's because of how mad you are! " Blake rolled his eyes and took a sip of his drink, trying to hide his annoyance. He muttered, "Whatever, man. Just drop it." Finn smirked and said, "Alright, alright. I'll let it go... for now." Finn's laughter slowly subsided as he realized the tension from Blake, and he could see why someo

This nightclub was called The Golden Hammer, and it was a very fun place to be as it had big hair bands that performed rock music on stage.
