“Would you like some tea, Miss?” asked our head maid, Martha, when I woke up the next morning.

“Has Dad left?”

Growing up, I only had Dad and my younger sister, Roselle. Mom died giving birth to Rose when I was only six, which didn’t give me a chance to have fond memories of her. I could even barely recall how she looked in my memories and if not for the pictures she left, time would have swept out everything that was left in the mind of a young child.

I looked at the clock on the wall and saw it was already eight. Dad had surely left for work. As one of the trusted betas of a huge district pack, he had a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders.

“Why didn’t you wake me up? I promised Rose I’ll accompany her in meeting her new tutor.”

“Um, you slept so late last night, Miss. I thought you might need more rest since yesterday didn’t go well…” Martha trailed off, looking at my face wearily. The buckets of tears I shed last night must be obvious with my puffy eyes now.

“Miss Rose also told me not to wake you up. She’s in the library with Mr. Gibbs now.”

My brows knitted at the mention of the name. “Mr. Gibbs? I thought it was Miss Emily Schiffer?”

“Miss Emily called yesterday. She said she couldn’t tutor Miss Rose as she had an urgent business outside Clayburrow and wouldn’t come back anytime soon. Master Henry hired Mr. Gibbs instead. He’s the dean’s son of the district’s academy.”

“The dean? You mean Professor William?” I asked. As I was studying in the district’s academy, I met the man. “I never heard he has a son though.”

“Mr. Michael’s mother is living in Rampshire so he stayed there to study. He just recently came back here to help the district’s research about a cure for a rare poison. I heard he’s a friend of our alpha,” informed Martha who must have verified the facts herself.

As the head maid of our estate for almost a decade now, Martha had always researched about the people who had business to do with my family. Her eyes were keen and always cautious.

“He is a man with a clean reputation and seemed to be a smart one, so you have nothing to worry about, Miss Loraine.”

If Dad picked the man himself, then he must really be a notable man. One without even a tiny dirt in his reputation. I didn’t think Dad would just allow anyone to tutor Roselle.

“This is my sister, Loraine,” Rose introduced me to Michael Gibbs when I went to check on them after having breakfast.

The man was young, probably just a few years older than me. Wearing a dark blue button-down shirt with its long sleeves rolled up to his elbows and black rimmed glasses, he could pass as a young professor. His pleasing academic look made me trust he could tutor my sister well.

Roselle was a smart twelve-year-old girl. She excelled in all subjects in school except for one, Science. As a perfectionist father, Dad wanted Rose to be good at everything a girl should have knowledge of. Just like how he honed me. The reason why he hired a Science tutor for her.

Mr. Gibbs and I exchanged pleasantries. He insisted on dropping the honorifics and addressing each other casually which I didn’t refuse. His friendly demeanor made me feel comfortable around him. We had a small talk over tea after his session with Rose and I walked him out when it was time to go.

“Do you also think Mr. Michael is handsome, Lory?” asked Rose, who suddenly appeared by my side while walking to the garden after sending off her tutor.

“He has pleasing looks indeed,” I admitted because it was the truth.

It drew a wide smile to Roselle’s face and I immediately knew what she was thinking.

“He’s a friend of our new alpha I heard. A dean’s son. You two can be a great match.”

“Rose,” I warned.

“I didn’t mean to be nosy but I forced Martha to spill it. I know you’ve broken up with Jacob…” her voice lowered down on the second sentence.

In our household, only two people knew my relationship with Jacob. Martha discovered it first. The middle-aged woman’s very keen eyes couldn’t be fooled. Then I told Rose about it later on. Apart from not wanting to lie to her, she was also my confidant. I want to tell her that part of my life because I knew I would have her back no matter what. It was also fun to share my love story with someone.

“Martha didn’t tell me in full detail because she didn’t know much either, but I think I know what happened. He met his mate, didn’t he?” Roselle’s wary eyes looked at me. For a girl her age, she sure knew many things about couples. Perhaps because she was smart and observant.

“Don’t worry, sister. I’m sure you’ll meet yours in time too.” Rose gave me an assuring smile but I couldn’t smile back.

“How can I do that though? Dad submitted my name to be one of the candidates in the hunt for the Alpha’s wife.”

I didn’t understand why Dad had to do that. What if I would be chosen and meet my fated mate later on? Did he even think what kind of pain he would put me into?

“I don’t understand,” Rose interrupted my thoughts. “Does the alpha have no fated mate? If he hasn’t met her yet, why choose someone else?”

It also occurred to me. Alphas from other districts, most of them, their partners were their fated mates. It was believed it would create a stronger bond that would make the pack prosper. There were also those who had their chosen mates, the one they chose and not the one destined for them. It was either caused by rejection or death of the fated mate.

Rejecting a fated mate could be lethal, the reason why it wasn’t practiced by many. Based on what I heard, most of those who rejected their mates died. The elders said it was the price they had to pay for not abiding by the law of nature. Some managed to survive because of their superior genes that could withstand the effect of breaking a mate bond.

“Rumors had it that he rejected his mate some time ago,” I said what I just heard from the gossiping maids.

I didn’t know much of the new alpha. I didn’t even know his face yet. He just recently assumed the alpha’s position after Alpha Yorrick, the former alpha who was his uncle, stepped down and left Clayburrow to chase his love. Alpha Yorrick was a man in his early thirties who had no child, so the alpha’s position automatically went to his only nephew.

Alpha Calix, the new alpha, didn’t grow up in Clayburrow though. He grew up in Rampshire and only arrived in the district recently to take care of his uncle’s responsibilities.

“An invitation from the Alpha’s residence, Miss,” Martha came to my room later that night.

I read what was written on the card and it said the Alpha’s residence would be hosting a party tomorrow night.

It also said the five selected ladies where the Alpha’s wife would be chosen from would be announced at the party.

“Make sure not to make a single mistake, sweetheart. The ends of my long dress touched the ground when I stepped out. It was a black dress with shining stones all over it. I had always been trained to be a graceful flower for special occasions like this. Whenever Dad requested my presence in events, refusing wasn’t an option. So it wasn’t new to me.However, this time I found it hard to stay calm. I was anxious. The way most of the guests greeted and looked at us, it was like they were expecting I’d be one of the selected ladies. That giving me a spot was a given because I was Henry Sullivan’s daughter. And I hated it because I

Alpha Calix went in front to give a brief speech. He said it was the councilors’ idea to give him a homecoming party and although he didn’t like parties that much, he agreed because it was an opportunity for him to meet the district’s people as the new alpha.“And since everyone important is gathered here tonight, at the end of this evening, I will announce the five ladies I selected who are eligible to be my luna,” he added in his speech which made most ladies gasp in anticipation.“These five ladies will come to live in my mansion for a month. I will observe each of them for me to know who is the best candidate among them. The parents shouldn’t worry though. I will ensure these ladies will be treated as the princesses that they are, and I will sign an agreement to promise not to sully these ladies’ honor.”“Who cares if the Alpha sullies my honor? I would gladly offer myself to him if I’d be chosen!”I heard giggles behind me and I wasn’t surprised how these girls could throw themse

When I went back inside, I was still dumbfounded. I wanted to think that whatever I heard back in the garden wasn’t true but who am I kidding? Why did fate seem to be playing with me?When the most anticipated time arrived, I stood there frozen among the crowd, my toes were curling on my shoes. If I was just any girl, it would have been a privilege. I would feel blessed for receiving the Alpha’s attention and making my father proud, but that wasn’t the case. All my life I felt like I was chained. Dad honed me to be the person he wanted me to be. His principles were unbreakable rules. The world he gave me felt like a cage and all I ever wanted was to break free. I was under his control all my life, and now am I going to be controlled by another man?“I know most of you are waiting for this,” said Alpha Calix with a smirk on his face. After looking around, his eyes found mine once again. An unfamiliar shiver ran through my spine.“Now I’m going to announce the five ladies who will be su

The butler of the Alpha’s mansion, Mr. Judson, was waiting for me at the gates when my family car arrived. The middle-aged man was with some maids to assist me. “Welcome, Miss Loraine. Let us help you with your things.” “Have the others arrived?” I asked. “Yes, they are at the dining hall with Alpha Calix. They are all waiting for you.” I nodded and followed the butler. The maids took care of my belongings. I didn’t want to bring more than necessary but Dad insisted on bringing more than what I would need in my one month stay here. I guessed he was expecting I’d be chosen to be the Alpha’s wife and there was no need to come back home. “Alpha has arranged everything for all the ladies. Your rooms are ready and I will let you see them later,” said Mr. Judson. When we arrived at the dining hall, I realized what the butler said was really true. Everyone was already present at the table. Alpha Calix was sitting at the head of the table, on his right were Genevieve and Lea, while on h

“How was your sleep? If there is anything you don’t like about your rooms, just tell Judson. He will make the necessary arrangements,” said Alpha Calix during the next day’s breakfast. Our places on the table were still the same. Genevieve and Marianne had the seats nearest to the Alpha while I took the farthest among the five ladies. Last night, I thought about what Roselle said to me when I left our mansion. She said something like turning off the alpha so he wouldn’t choose me. It actually made sense. If I would just mind my own business and wouldn’t try hard on pleasing Alpha Calix like what everyone else was doing, then probably he wouldn’t see me as a wife prospect. I should also try doing the opposite of what he was expecting from us. The quicker he’d get turned off, the quicker I could leave. “Loraine.” When Evelyn, who was sitting beside me, kicked my foot under the table, it was only then I realized that Alpha had been calling my name and I wasn’t paying attention. Even when I was already in the car with the girls, I still could feel my cheeks burning hot. I knew Alpha Calix was flirty but I didn’t know he was shameless! How could he say words as scandalous as that? I really wasn’t wrong when I thought the agreement he signed about not sullying the ladies’ honor was an empty promise. He was good looking and powerful, I got that, but did he expect every woman would be pleased with his advances and bite his trap mindlessly? “Your cheeks are flaring, Loraine. Not feeling well?” Evelyn asked which made Genevieve’s head turn to me. We were inside one van while Alpha Calix had his own car. “You should have told Alpha that you’re not feeling well, dear Loraine. You don’t have to try so hard even when you can’t make it,” Genevieve’s tone indicated concern, opposite to what she was implying. “I’m alright, Genevieve. Thanks for the concern. I’m just feeling a little feverish due to the cold weather. I can manage just fine.” I really didn’t understand

“Are you heading back to the mansion now?” Michael asked after the match. Even when it was the first time he joined Clayburrow’s equestrian match, Alpha Calix aced the game. There were a fair number of participants who knew well what they were doing, but Alpha seemed to be a little more aggressive than the others. The way he moved with his horse, it felt like he wanted to burn the whole arena. Thinking about how he looked at me before the match started made me feel a hollow in my stomach. If it was really me he was looking at, did I get him annoyed? But I only changed seats. Did he say something like the girls should stick together at times like this? I couldn’t remember. “Loraine?” Michael called when I didn’t answer his question. I offered him an apologetic smile. “Sorry. Yes, I think so.” “We should go to our favorite café, Lory! Mr. Michael can go with us too!” Rose butted in. “I’m sure the Alpha doesn’t forbid you going out?” I shook my head. “Then that’s great! What do you

Alpha Calix went out of the car first by the time we arrived at the mansion. What he said caught me at a loss for words. My palms were covered with cold sweat as I tried to come up with something, but the words wouldn’t roll out of my tongue. Perhaps why I couldn’t argue about it because deep down, I knew it was true. I felt safe around Michael and being with Alpha Calix was a whole different thing. Alpha had already made it to the mansion’s door with his long strides while I was still halfway through it. As if my body hadn’t gone cold enough due to the anxiety I went through, the rain suddenly poured. I ran to the mansion but I still got drenched. Water was dripping from my dress to the floor as I hugged myself to ease the cold. “Get her a towel.” I looked around and saw Alpha near the stairs, watching me with the same dark eyes. I jumped a bit when a loud thunder came. The maid who was asked to get a towel hurried. She was about to give it to me but Alpha grabbed it from her han

Alec couldn’t speak in too much irritation and probably, anger. His eyes were so red, like the color of evil itself. The color of blood and war. The color of death. Back when I was young, my dream was simple. Stay out of troubles, help the pack, earn a degree, make a good career, marry my mate and have kids, maybe two or three. I envy those big families so I wanted to make my own. Maybe because I grew up in a broken family and I felt lonely. When Dad remarried to a woman who has a daughter same age as me, I thought I would finally have someone I can call as sister. I wanted a sibling. I wanted a normal happy family. But turns out that I would be kicked out in my own house because of her. Not that I was literally kicked out though since I left myself. But it is still the same for me because I knew I had no choice but to leave. It was getting worse every day and I don’t want Dad to worry about my issues. I went to Lynnwood, hoping I would calm down there and I also hoped that my stay in a new surrounding would bring good to me.However, looking back now, I can say that it brought me to something both good and bad. I looked at myself in the mirror. I just stopped walking back and forth like some psycho who can't behave her ass. I also kept on checking my clothes, my hair, my face, and everything that could be noticed about me. Well, who can blame me? It's weekend today. The day I promised Calix that I would meet his parents in their home. The past few days, I have been really preparing myself for this even Calix told me many times that I have nothing to worry about. But isn't it normal for a wife to be nervous when meeting her husband's family for the first time?I looked at my outfit again. I was really torn earlier if I should wear something so feminine like a dress, skirt or if I should just be casual and have my usual attire when I am walking around Lynnwood – skinny jeans, fitted blouse, cardigan and sneakers. Though at the end, I decided to choose the latter since I am more comfortable with it.My hair was on loose, the mermaid curls naturally curling on the ends of my brown hair. I only p
