Emma's POV
“Are you sure about that?” I asked my mom as soon as she flashed her diamond ring in my face. She's been head over heels in love with her new man, and while they get on my nerves sometimes, especially on the days I caught them making out in the living room, one thing I can't deny is the fact that they are good together. “Yes honey.” She replied beaming. “What's wrong?” Mom looked concerned, she probably sensed that I wasn't so cool with it, but I didn't want to be the party pooper. “Oh no. Don't get me wrong. I just wanted to make sure that you are certain about it.” I replied to her. “Besides, is it an old people's thing to not propose in public. Why did he slip the ring under the duvet?” I teased her. “Please!” She said, laughing. Before Mark, my soon to be step dad, it's been a really long while since I saw my mom so happy. She was a workaholic. A lifestyle I think she picked up after my dad. It was a great save from alcohol, but I still didn't have her to myself, it was all work, then Mark came along. “So what's next?” Do I get to be on your train?” I asked. She seemed so eager to laugh at every single thing. That probably is what happiness feels like. I hope I get to experience it someday. “You know that's a given.” She replied. I wasn't expecting that. I know it was a little delusional of me to think it was all a joke, but some part of me really wished it was. I needed my mom! Her marriage to Mark was going to mean a lot. Mark is a great guy, but I'd rather we stayed like this. I don't ever want anyone else to hurt my mom the way dad did. He broke her so bad, she could not help it. Our life wasn't so great afterwards, but it was at least drama free. Mark, who owns a chain of stores, one of which my mom operated, started visiting more often, and not just for business sake. In the beginning, it was nice that she came back from work less grumpy. Or that she started staying out a little later, giving me a itsy-bitsy little bit of freedom. Then she brought back leftovers, which were far more classy than the veggies we always had for dinner. I was excited and wished that whatever was driving change in this direction never stopped. Then she started coming home with my own pack. I knew she couldn't afford that from her salary, and that was where the suspicion started setting in. I mean, it was great that I could finally relate to all the great foods the girls at school always talked about, but I had my mom less. Mom was home less frequently, fortunately or unfortunately, it was also around that time that a new neighbor moved in with her kids, both about my age. Kayla made the first move. “Hi, I'm Kayla, he's Kevin.” She broke into my thoughts on one of those days when I stood in the hallway, hoping no one saw me while I gawked at how toned ‘he’ was. It had always been ‘he’, now I knew his name, I could call him by his name in my dreams. Shamelessly, I was enjoying the fact that he was stealing my dreams and that I said everything I ever wanted to say to him in real life there. “Oh. Uhm. Hi, Kay, Kayla.” I stuttered dumbly after she snuck up on me. Her voice clearly betrayed that she found it amusing. She was seconds away from ripping at the seams. “I'll tell him you fancy him. Some yeast to his ego that is already far off the roof.” She gave an eye roll and stalled off. She was a very attractive girl. For a second, she made me wish I was into women. I'd have all that beauty to myself, till my eyes caught Kevin again. I instantly unwished it. He was a Greek God in the form of a high school kid. “Oh, and he takes your classes too.” Kayla turned back and said when she was already within his earshot. Kevin turned back immediately and looked at who Kayla was referring to. Determined to not let him see me, I turned back and ran back into the house. I'm not proud of the last bit of memory I have from that morning, but the story is really incomplete without it. Mom always had the decency to not be in the same space I was when she and Mark were on their never ending calls they made when Mark was out of town. This time around, I ran inside determined not to let Kevin see who his stalker was. Mom was clothless, stark naked. I wished that was all. She was on a video call with Mark, and trust me when I say she had more clothes on than he did. I immediately ran back out, screaming. This time around, Kevin and Kayla ran towards me. With each step he took, I saw his thighs contract and relax, his hair toddling in the breeze, and his eyes looking for who just made the eerie sound in the ever quiet hallway. They had gotten really close before I remembered that I had to have something to tell them. Stupid me! I can't say anything about mom, never, that was between her and I… “Are you alright?” He asked. The moment he opened his mouth, I wished he took mine in his. My hormones were rioting and running wild. Kayla, who understood, stood behind him, laughing at the exchange. I was too embarrassed, already reddening in the cheeks. Kevin put his hands on my shoulder and held my face in one hand. “I asked if you are alright. You screamed really loud.” He repeated. “Sorry.” It's the only thing I could utter. My mind was blank.Emma's POV “What was that, mom?!” I asked as soon as I walked in. I was a little surprised to see that she was at home. I mean, what if I was bringing my non-existent boyfriend home for some quick after school make out sesh? “Sit down, baby.” I had mixed feelings about her calling me baby. Sometimes, it made me feel like the center of her world which I was, other days, it just made me feel small, like it did now. “Trust me, I was going to.” I almost passed out in the morning, I'm not trying to again. “You don't have to sound that way, Emma.” At least she called my name. That was also a good and bad thing. She only used my name when there was something serious to say. “I'm all ears mom.” I replied to her, sitting and crossing my legs at whatever manner of travesty was about to present itself again. I couldn't also wait to get back to fantasizing about him, Kevin… He'd break the news to you. Before I had the time to ask who ‘he’ was, a tall handsome man walked out of
Emma's POV As soon as I finished checking out all the fancy things Mark got me, I settled to stalk Kevin. At least I now knew his name. I searched the name up on all my social media, but I was never really good at stalking things, so I couldn't find him. Plus there's a very huge chance he wasn't going to be using his real name. I searched Kayla, this time I was determined to find her. The occurrences for Kayla wasn't as much as that of Kevin, plus the ‘23’ she had written on her bag must definitely mean something. I added it to ‘Kayla’ in my search, and her name popped up. Apparently, she has done a bit of modeling. Her page looked so full and classy. They must be rich people. I searched all her followers and in no time, saw Kevin. I held my breath unconsciously before clicking on him. As soon as I did, I couldn't hold back. I looked at all he's ever posted, and all the ladies, especially. He seemed to roll with only cute model girls. I didn't think I stood a chance. The least I
Emma's POV “There's no way I'm making it out of the door.” I replied to him. I was heartbroken. If not for the fact that the stars never aligned in my favor, mom wasn't supposed to be off work. But Mark decided his sperm bladder couldn't hold on any longer. Ugh! Life sucked! “That's okay.” Kevin texted back. I felt bad for him, and for me. “We could make the best of here though.” He added, with a winking emoji. Now that was exciting. At least he wasn't giving up on me. “That's perfect. What do you say we do?” I was brimming with joy. I was really good at online games and riddles, so I did not have to worry about him trashing me at it. “I'd love to see more pictures.” I was surprised. That definitely wasn't what I was expecting. “Okay.” I replied. I was really still on the fence about it, but it was HIM, KEVIN! “...without clothes.” He added. My heart flip-flopped in my chest. I was excited and scared at the same time. “Why should I trust you?” I asked him.
Emma's POV “Hey.” Kevin texted, about an hour after they got in.My nerves calmed a bit. “What's up? How was today? Didn't see you much?” There were a million other questions I wanted to ask, but that could suffice for now. “It was a lot.” He replied. He was still typing, so I held my breath hoping he would explain the ‘a lot’ part. “Hey, it's Kayla.” I got another text. Now I was torn, and curious. Why was she texting me? “I stole your contact from Kevin.” She admitted. That was cool. I'd love to be friends with her if Kevin and I were ever going to amount to anything. “Hi Kayla. Didn't see you much today. What's up?” I replied to her. Kevin was still typing, there must be a whole lot he wanted to say. Why didn't he just call? I didn't want to send any text so I wouldn't interrupt his thought process, so I decided to wait it out. “There's something I think you should know.” Kayla said next. “What is it?” My heart was beating twice as fast as it normally did. “Kay
Emma's POV “What was that, Emma?” Mom demanded as soon as I walked in. “What are you talking about?” I asked her, weakly. She noticed I didn't come in with as much strength as I stormed down. “What's wrong, baby?” She asked again. “Everything.” I replied “What does that even mean?” She continued probing. I was walking to my room, ready to shut the door behind me, but she was hot on my tails. “I want to be alone.” I said. That never worked, I wasn't expecting it to. “Emma, I know a lot of things are wrong with us. And I promise to fix it as soon and as fast as I can, but please, please, what's wrong? I can't stand seeing you like this.” She was already tearing up. I hated myself more. I was her only child after my dad left us. I always promised myself that I wasn't going to cause her pain after I watched my dad walk out on us almost six years ago. Al she did was work her ass off, except the brief alcoholic phase, but all she had been to me was an angel. I can'
Kevin's POV I wasn't proud to tell anyone why Mom had moved us across the country. But it was supposed to be a fresh start. I promised I wasn't going to get entangled, which is also partly why we were attending a private school. A lot of the girls there were unlike what they appeared. Meek in school, but quite raw and crude beyond the four walls of Royal Province High. Unfortunately, though, the whole thing was beginning to look like rinse and repeat. I can't deny my attraction to most girls, and I am so stupid that I always play along with it. “Do you agree, Mr Holden?” The gruff voice interrupted my musings. “Yeah.” I replied. I had no strength to deny anything. There was no point. I had a record. It's why we moved uptown. “We would like to have your statement now.” He said. Monica was instructed to go out and wait while they took my statement. “We want to know what happened.” The kind woman across the desk, seated next to ‘Gruff Voice’ said. “Monica and I, well
Emma's POV “Mom!” I screamed as soon as Kevin jumped off my mom's moving car. It was a day that would never leave memory. A lot of fucked up things were happening. Just when I thought the day had ended, that had to happen. And in fact, it was the worst of all. Mom helped me with Kevin. After we got him tucked at the back, she jumped on the driver's seat and turned right back, headed for the hospital. It was about to be far too messy and we all knew it. Just when we thought we were done with the police. Hopefully, Kevin would be graceful enough to admit that he jumped out on purpose rather than let my mom take the hit. I was thinking up so many ways it could end, and none of them were good. The only good part was that we didn't have to worry about money. As soon as we got there, Kevin was wheeled in and we were told to wait at the lobby. None of us insisted on going in with him because we both knew he wouldn't be so keen on seeing our faces first when he's revived. I stalke
Emma's POV “And to what do I owe this?” Mom said, disappointed. I could already guess who it was. I remembered her cologne. “Can we talk like adults? The kids look up to us.” She replied, as snidely as she did earlier. “And how's he out so soon? We barely got back.” My replied, still standing in the doorway, making no effort to shift. “It's just a broken bone. We can manage that outside those scary white walls. I wasn't going to subscribe to a reminder of how I lost their dad.” She said, still without emotion. “Mom!” I heard Kayla and Kevin chorus somewhere from behind the door. “He must be worth a tonne.” My mom said as she tore the door open for them to come in.I did not know how to act. For all I care, I still have unfinished business with my mom, then this. “Hi, Emma.” Mrs Harwell said. “Hi.” I was both shy and nervous, but it was polite to reply when someone greets me. Both Kayla and Kevin avoided my eyes as they made their way to the seat next to me.
Lily's POV Emma and I were gonna have premium fun, and I was gonna make sure of it. I didn't cancel my trip to Berlin to sulk and cry with Emma. “Do we go on our spree first?” I asked her. Her face looked conflicted when she got into the car after she and Chase's little pep talk. I hated to see my girl like that. “Yeah.” She confirmed. Good to know we were still on track. I need some summer dresses and sunshades for Berlin myself, and maybe boots too. “What's on your mind?” I asked her. She looked like she wasn't really with me, in the car. “I'm scared.” She said, “Why?” I asked her. “For a lot of reasons.” She said, “Start with the one on your mind now.” I said. “Everything.” She said, She was rubbing her hands furiously. “Everything is wrong.” “That can't be true.” I said. “You have a life many are only jealous of.” I said. “You're just trying to make me feel better. It would have worked when I was younger and dumber, but I'm smart now, Lily.” Her
Emma's POV. I did one last outfit check before heading down to Lily's. It wasn't much, but it was pretty, cute, demure. I took these stairs carefully, gently, just so if Chase was around, he would not hear me come down. It wasn't exactly like I was running from him, I just wasn't in the mood for any explanation. I just wanted to do what I wanted to do and be happy. The front door was left ajar, which was quite unusual, but not strange, since he was still somewhere around. “Here she comes.” Chase beamed. They had just broken their hug, and he and Lily were looking in my direction. I almost wobbled under their gaze. Their faces were so smiley, so expectant, I was tempted to look back to confirm if there was something else that had their attention. “You look so fucking pretty.” Lily said, hugging me and planting a kiss on my forehead. “Thank you.” I croaked. I was pinching myself, struggling to remind myself that the hug I just witnessed them break meant nothing. That the
Emma's POV I wasn't feeling up to talking to Chase when I woke up in the morning. That's not to deny that I didn't find his efforts cute. He sounded so happy, like if I stayed around him too much, he'd rub off on me. The pancakes he made, made their way into my nose, but my head was feeling a bit woozy, I was in fact trying to catch my balance. I didn't know that was enough to piss him off. I looked from the window opposite his bed, I could not see him. Meaning he didn't go so far. The pancakes were making me extra hungry, but I felt nasty, and weak. I stripped, half hoping Chase came in at that exact time. I took my time, taking my clothes off one after the other. I tarried a bit, waiting in sexy poses. I pinched myself. I was beginning to get too delusional, even for myself. I walked into the bathroom majestically. The blood flow had reduced, and for that I was grateful. Taking my time, I lathered my body carefully with a body scrub I'd just gotten. I felt fresh, diffe
Chase's POV. I was still very much haunted from how I reacted when Emma told me about it. Every time I saw her wear a painful look on her face I remembered how it mirrored the look she wore when she told me. The sleep at night was somewhat chaotic. She had a bout of nightmares. I was scared to my bones when I heard her scream the first time, but it was rather a relief when I saw she was still asleep. It happened three times more, and every single time, I got less scared than I was before. “How are you?” I asked. I'd been staring at her for over an hour, when the day was still a bit dark. “Better.” She replied, turning from me and facing the wall. I thought today was gonna be different. Maybe she'd be warmer, calmer, more composed. I had the most beautiful smile on, ready to make her world different from what it used to be. “I loved watching you sleep.” I said, like I'd done every morning since we'd been together. Emma's smile was a bit shy, or cold, frosty, I didn't w
Emma's POVHow the call ended was a bit strange. I didn't know why my mom had to cut it off. As much as I wanted to dash to Mark's, I wasn't feeling up to it and I had started to feel gnawing pains in my belly. I concluded my mom was gonna be alright and left it at that. When I called her, I wasn't expecting to hear her say those things she said, but they sure were what I needed to hear, in retrospection. Maybe it was better after all. My raw maternal instincts were mourning the baby, but a baby wasn't really what I needed. And she was right about the other part too. Chase and I were going to college in less than a month. She said two letters came from different schools for him, it was a lot more than a punch in my gut that he applied to two schools, none of which I applied to. I thought the plan was to be together. Apparently, I didn't mean so much to him. As I held my head in my hand, I cried to the God I don't know if I believed in. I'd been cheated so badly in my ver
Emma's POV I changed out of my already stained towels. Chase just got them from a fancy women's store, online, about two days ago. I felt bad that it had to get ruined, but it was all part of my healing. The doctor said I was gonna be bleeding for about four days. After bawling my eyes out again on Chase's shoulders, I logged my tired body back into the bathroom to wash up. I was weak as fuck, and definitely worse of emotionally. I put a sanitary pad on and then went to bedI didn't think it was gonna be easy sleeping, so it was not a surprise when all that closing my eyelids did was usher in the horrible memories. I began to think of something I thought I'd cast to the back of my mind a long time ago. Every now and then, I felt Chase's hand on my body. It was hard to tell him that the hands I once died for, the hands I once fantasized about being wrapped in had started to irritate me. The day went by slowly, I subconsciously looked at the digital clock on the dressing ta
Chase's POV “Baby,” I called out to Emma as soon as we got back home, “I hate seeing you this way.” My voice snapped her out of her thoughts, she breathed deep and came out of the car, leaving both her phone and purse behind. “I'm really tired, Chase.” She said, “I just want to rest.” “That's totally fine.” I took all our stuff out of the car and ran after her. Let me help you.” She looked and felt weak. “Thank you.” She said, as I helped her up the stairs. “Can I get you something to eat?” I asked “I don't feel up to it right now.” She replied. “Can I just try?” I asked her. “Don't bother.” She snipped. “Do you need something else?” I asked her. “Just stay next to me.” She said, It felt like an honor to be told such by her. “Let me jump out of these clothes.” I tore the clothes, a reminder of where we'd been and what'd happened. “Pull me closer.” She cried. I pulled Emma so close. Her body felt heavier, and was even warming up. “I'm sorry, Emma.
Emma's POV “Would you have me read the results with him present?” The doctor asked me. “Yeah, he's my boyfriend.” I said, smiling. I rubbed Chase's face, pulling his beards with one hand, and rubbing my belly with the other. “You might want to sit up.” He said. “We are happy you came in for a check up today.” The kind old man said. I smiled. It was a big hospital downtown, fancy and very modern too. I felt more at peace with Chase by my side. “Emma Watson,” He wore the glasses which hung down from his neck and read my name out from a file in his hand, “I'm afraid, but we couldn't find a heartbeat.” I knew nothing about stuff like those. I'd never been or lived with a pregnant woman. I remember the look on their faces while the nurse kept tapping my belly and scanning round, but I didn't think it was a big deal. “What does that mean?” I heard Chase ask as my heart was already shattering, it could only mean one thing. My baby was dead. “Your baby is dead.” The doc
Chase's POVI knew I was kinda weird, maybe a bit confused. But I had genuine reason to believe Emma was doing too much. The food arrived soon, and we went to get it at the door. We were cool just a moment ago. I hate how we weren't yet at the point where we handle our shit maturely. “I'll get that.” I said, reaching for the bigger and heavier boxes. It was only instinctive to be more protective of her. She was carrying my baby. Whether or not we were ready for it. “Emma.” I called her quietly since we weren't both far from the rest’ earshot. “Yeah.” She turned, I saw the tear marks on her face. I was gonna say how I was sorry for blanking out on her, but the words just couldn't get out. “I'm…” I started, looking in multiple directions at once. “It’s okay.” Emma said, and walked in. I took a minute to process what had just happened. “Where were you man?” Gray screamed in delight as I entered. “Been looking in that direction for the past minute.” He added. I kn
