Elliot

I adjusted the bouquet of fresh lilies in my hand as I stepped through the entrance of the nursing home. The scent of antiseptic and flowers lingered in the air, and soft music played in the background. It wasn’t exactly a welcoming place, but I knew it was the best Susan could provide for her mother.

A nurse led me down the hallway to Mrs. Hart’s room, her expression a mix of curiosity and politeness. “She’s been expecting a visitor today. But I don’t think she knew it would be you.”

I smirked slightly. “I hope it’s a good surprise.”

The nurse gave me an uncertain smile before knocking on the door. “Mrs. Hart? You have a visitor.”

A weak voice responded from inside. “Come in.”

I stepped into the room, and my gaze immediately landed on the frail woman sitting by the window. She had Susan’s striking features...sharp eyes, high cheekbones, and a quiet strength even in her fragile state. Her hair was streaked with silver, and she looked thinner than I remembered from years ago.

She turned her head slowly, her eyes narrowing as she took me in. Then, recognition flashed across her face. “Elliot Prescott?”

I smiled, stepping forward. “It’s good to see you again, Mrs. Hart.”

Her expression remained unreadable as she studied me, then glanced at the bouquet in my hands. “You brought flowers.”

I nodded, placing them on the small table beside her. “I wasn’t sure what kind you liked, but Susan mentioned you used to love lilies.”

That got a reaction. Her lips twitched slightly, almost forming a smile. “She remembers that, huh?”

“She remembers everything about you,” I said softly. “She talks about you all the time.”

Mrs. Hart leaned back in her chair, eyeing me carefully. “So, to what do I owe this visit? You didn’t just come here to charm an old woman, did you?”

I chuckled. “Not entirely. I came because I wanted to see you. And… I wanted to ask for your blessing.”

Her gaze sharpened. “Blessing?”

I took a deep breath. “I asked Susan to marry me.”

She blinked, her fingers tightening around the armrest. “You’re serious?”

“Dead serious.”

Silence stretched between us as she studied me, her expression unreadable. Then she sighed, shaking her head. “Elliot, I won’t lie...I never thought you and Susan would cross paths again, let alone talk about marriage. What makes you so sure about this?”

I met her gaze without hesitation. “Because I never stopped loving her.”

Her lips parted slightly, as if my words had caught her off guard. I continued, my voice firm. “I made a mistake leaving her all those years ago. I won’t make that mistake again. Susan is the love of my life, and I intend to spend the rest of my days proving that to her.”

Mrs. Hart remained silent, her eyes searching mine for something...honesty, maybe. A long moment passed before she finally spoke.

“You know, she cried a lot after you left,” she murmured.

My heart clenched. “I know. And I hate that I hurt her.”

“She built herself back up after that,” she continued. “She became strong. Independent. She doesn’t need saving, Elliot.”

I nodded. “I know she doesn’t. But this isn’t about saving her...it’s about loving her. Supporting her. Being the man she deserves.”

Mrs. Hart sighed, leaning her head back against the chair. For a moment, she just stared at the ceiling, lost in thought. Then, finally, she looked at me again.

“If you ever hurt her again, I will personally make sure you regret it,” she said, her voice carrying a quiet warning.

A smile tugged at my lips. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

She exhaled, then nodded. “Alright, Prescott. You have my blessing.”

Relief flooded through me, and I reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. “Thank you, Mrs. Hart.”

She gave me a small, tired smile. “Take care of my girl.”

“I will,” I promised.

And this time, I meant it with everything in me.

The kind of woman who could tear someone apart with a single glance. And right now, all that cold, assessing energy was focused on me. The waiter had just poured our wine when she finally broke the silence. “I appreciate you agreeing to meet with me, Susan,” she said, though her tone held no warmth. “Of course,” I replied, keeping my voice steady. “Elliot told me you wanted to talk.” She took a sip of her wine before setting the glass down with precision. “Yes, I did. I wanted to meet the woman who has suddenly reappeared in my son’s life after all these years.” I stiffened at the way she said it. Like I had plotted my way back into E
