Elliot

Waking up, I instinctively reached out, expecting to find her warm presence beside me. But the bed was empty, and for a moment, I frowned. Then it all came rushing back: the way her lips trembled against mine, how her body yielded to my touch, and the fire in her eyes when she let go of every defense.

I groaned, scrubbing a hand over my face. Last night was perfect, and yet, she wanted to keep it a secret.

I understood her concerns—hell, I did—but I wasn’t exactly the kind of man who could simply pretend. Every time I looked at her now, all I’d see was how her back arched, how her nails dug into my skin as she whispered my name like it was her only prayer.

I wasn’t built for playing it cool.

Still, for Susan, I’d try. At least for now.

That didn’t mean I wouldn’t remind her. Subtlety wasn’t my strong suit, but I could adapt when needed.

The day at the office was long, and without her in close proximity, it was unbearable. She was still setting up in her newly customized space—a move I orchestrated as a token of her importance, though she’d likely chalk it up to professionalism. I couldn’t stop imagining her walking into the room, her face lighting up at the sight of the little touches I added—her favorite coffee blend tucked in the corner, the ergonomic chair she’d once mentioned in passing.

Even Gerald, ever the stoic assistant, glanced at me quizzically.

"Sir, you've been staring at the same email for fifteen minutes," he noted, deadpan.

I waved him off, though he wasn’t entirely wrong. My focus was shot, replaced by an itch I couldn’t scratch unless I saw her again.

By lunchtime, I found myself wandering toward the marketing department under the pretense of checking on project updates. I spotted her in the distance, talking to one of her team members, her laugh floating through the corridor.

My stomach tightened. I forced myself to lean casually against the wall, arms crossed, pretending I wasn’t hanging on her every move.

She noticed me. Her gaze flickered briefly before she quickly turned away, pretending I wasn’t there.

Two could play that game.

I stepped closer, leaning into her space just enough to rattle her composure without saying a word.

"Good afternoon, Susan," I murmured, my voice low enough for her ears only.

Her posture stiffened before she turned to face me, her smile professional but strained.

"Mr. Prescott," she replied, her tone clipped.

I smirked, knowing full well she was struggling to maintain her facade. Oh, I’d play along. For now.

Susan

By the time I arrived at the café, Meera was already waiting for me, sipping on an iced latte and scrolling through her phone. Her sharp, observant eyes immediately zeroed in on me as I approached the table.

“You’re late,” she teased, though her tone softened as she looked me over. “Wait a second... What’s that look on your face? You’re practically glowing.”

“Glowing?” I laughed nervously, pulling out the chair across from her. “I think you’re imagining things.”

“Nope.” She leaned forward, narrowing her eyes at me. “Something’s definitely up. Spill it, Susan.”

“There’s nothing to spill.” I waved her off, but the heat rushing to my cheeks betrayed me.

Meera raised an eyebrow, setting her drink down slowly. “Okay, now I know something’s up. You’re blushing.”

I groaned, hiding my face in my hands. “It’s nothing, Meera. Seriously.”

“Liar,” she shot back, her grin widening. “Susan Hart doesn’t blush for no reason. And if I had to guess... this has something to do with a certain Mr. hot billionaire Ex.”

My head snapped up. “How do you—”

“Please,” she interrupted, rolling her eyes. “I’ve seen the way he looks at you. And don’t even get me started on the way you look at him. It’s like you’re trying not to, but you fail miserably.”

I opened my mouth to protest but stopped. There was no point in denying it. Meera always saw through me.

Taking a deep breath, I glanced around the café, as if someone might overhear us, before leaning in closer. “Okay, fine. You’re right. It’s... Elliot.”

“I knew it!” Meera smacked the table, drawing the attention of a few nearby patrons. “I knew something was going on between you two. Tell me everything.”

“It’s not what you think,” I muttered, fiddling with the edge of my napkin. “We’re not... together. Not officially.”

Meera tilted her head, waiting for me to elaborate.

I sighed. “There’s this... tension between us. It’s like every time I try to keep my distance, we end up getting pulled back together. And, well...” I trailed off, biting my lip.

“And, well... what?” she pressed.

“I think I’m falling for him,” I admitted softly, my voice barely above a whisper.

Meera’s eyes widened, and for once, she was speechless.

“I know it’s crazy,” I continued, rushing to fill the silence. “He’s my boss and my ex. After everything that happened between us back then... and now? It’s a mess. This whole thing is completely unprofessional. But I can’t stop thinking about him. And after... after the other night, I don’t know what to do.”

“Wait.” Meera finally found her voice, her expression shifting from shock to curiosity. “When you say ‘everything that happened,’ are we talking about, like, everything everything?”

I buried my face in my hands again. “Yes, Meera. Everything.”

Her gasp was so loud I thought the entire café might turn to stare at us. “Susan Hart! You little minx!”

“Shh!” I hissed, glaring at her.

She grinned, completely unfazed. “So, let me get this straight. You and Elliot Prescott—your incredibly hot, incredibly rich boss and ex-boyfriend—have... you know. And now you’re falling for him but haven’t told him yet?”

“That about sums it up,” I muttered, sinking lower in my chair.

Meera’s grin softened into something more thoughtful. “Do you think he feels the same way?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Sometimes, it feels like he does. He’s thoughtful and sweet in ways I didn’t expect. But other times, he’s so infuriatingly... Elliot. It’s like he knows exactly how to get under my skin.”

“That’s called chemistry, babe,” Meera said with a wink.

I gave her a weak smile. “Maybe. But I’m scared, Meera. What if I’m reading too much into it? What if this is just some... fling to him?”

Meera reached across the table, taking my hand in hers. “Susan, listen to me. You’re one of the smartest, most amazing people I know. If Elliot Prescott can’t see how lucky he is to have you, then he’s an idiot. But from what you’ve told me, I don’t think he’s that stupid.”

Her words brought a small, tentative smile to my lips.

“Thanks, Meera,” I said quietly.

“Anytime.” She squeezed my hand before letting go. “But seriously, Susan. Don’t let fear hold you back. If you’re falling for him, maybe it’s time to take a leap of faith.”

I nodded slowly, her words sinking in. Maybe she was right. Maybe it was time to stop running from my feelings and start facing them head-on.

But that was easier said than done.

So when she called me into her private study the next morning, I already knew where the conversation was headed. I shut the heavy mahogany door behind me and crossed my arms. “What is it, Mother?” She was seated on her pristine white couch, legs crossed, a cup of tea in her manicured hands. I exhaled sharply, running a hand through my hair. “No.” Her brows lifted. “No?” “You heard me,” I said. “Susan doesn’t need to be subjected to one of your tests.” She sighed, setting down her teacup. “Elliot, don’t be ridiculous. She’s about to marry into this family. It’s only natural that I meet her.” “No, what’s natural

Memories of last night flashed through my mind like a steamy montage I wished I could forget but couldn’t. My cheeks burned as I turned to see him beside me, sleeping soundly with his arm draped over my waist. I bit my lip, trying not to panic, but panic was brewing anyway. What the hell did I just do? My chest tightened with embarrassment. What was worse? The fact that I had let myself lose control or that it had been with Elliot Prescott? Trying to move carefully, I slipped out of his grasp, grabbed his shirt from the floor, and tiptoed to the bathroom. After splashing cold water on my face, I stared at my reflection in the mirror.
