The next couple of weeks went by quickly as more talks of negotiations took up both Marie and Steven’s time. Sandra on the other hand was only too glad to be enjoying her status as the wife of the billionaire.
Apparently after dinner that night, Steven had barely said a word to her but tossed a platinum credit card to her and asked her to buy whatever she wanted. Sandra had gone wild and started shopping for all sorts of furniture and accessories for her apartment, she hadn't stopped there, she had even bought tons of designer purses and shoes as well. At first Marie had been worried but then Sandra had gotten red in the face and asked her if she knew the resale value of a Kate Spade purse and that it was all an investment. Then she had looked at Marie closely and said,
“You're not jealous, are you? Marie. I thought you were over him?” To which Marie had replied and told her not to be silly and that she was just watching out for her friend.
“ The man is a billionaire, Marie. And you're fretting over thousands of dollars spent. Besides, I'm his wife and I deserve to look fab, you know.”
“Sure.” Marie had replied to end the argument. Not that anyone knew about the marriage anyway except people in their office and the people at Kazuko Inc. . No one even knew what she looked like. All they knew was that Steven King had married. And Marie knew that they would be making no public appearances together but who was she to stand in the way of her friend's happiness.
“Besides, do you want me to return you this lovely Cardigan I got you?” Sandra has asked and Marie has made a grab for it. It really was lovely and in a brown color that would suit her so perfectly. All squabbles forgotten, the friends had got together for dinner and Sandra had paid.
“Marie, please come in here.” Steven’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Yes, Sir.”
“You wanted to see me?” She said, popping her head into his office.
“Yes. We need to organize a party to celebrate the account. Can you brief the event team and kick the plans in motion?”
“So we’ve got it, Sir. They have signed over their account and dropped their former agency?”
“Yes, Marie. It's good as done. Hence the party.”
“That's great news. I’ll go and brief the event team right now.”
“Thank you.” He said and looked out his window. Marie couldn't place why he didn't sound excited anymore. This was supposedly all he had wanted before now and it had finally happened. Marie knew better than to ask Steven if he was okay. Steven has serious lines when it came to personal enquiries. That was why her mouth fell open when halfway across the room, he asked her,
“Is that a new cardigan?”
“Err, yes sir. Thank you.” She said but Steven said nothing else and she walked out. Were her clothes that few that he had time to notice that she had changed her cardigan? Or could he somehow have suspected that Sandra had gifted it to her?
Putting away worrisome thoughts from her mind, she sat at her desk and began to write a brief to the event team lead.
“Heading to lunch. And oh by the way, the party should be on Friday next week. I don't want to hear it. Just make it work, Marie.” He said to forestall any complaints.
Marie wished she could throw a mug at the back of his smug head. A week to plan a party for Alden Kings agencies and its subsidiaries was a nightmare. And it would be her nightmare because if anything went wrong, Steven would call her into his office and give her one of those scalding looks that made her feel she was in Kindergarten and doing something naughty.
“ Hey, Sandra. What's up?” Marie said as she picked up her ringing cell.
“Well, you’re not going to believe this, Marie. I sat down today thinking about the fact that I have barely one week left to be married to the billionaire. So I asked if I could go on a week-long holiday and he agreed.”
“That’s awesome. So where are you now?” Marie asked, trying to inject some cheerfulness into her voice.
“Oh, I’m driving to Maine right now to pick up a few things. But I have a flight to catch to Paris by nightfall. How awesome is that?”
“ I wish you could come.” Sandra said wistfully on the other end of the line.
“Me too, love. But I need to work. Apparently Godzilla wants to have a party to celebrate next week and I'm in charge.”
“Celebrate what?” Sandra asked and Marie worried about if it was okay to divulge this information to Sandra, but Sandra was her best friend after all.
“To celebrate the new business acquisition.”
“Oh, I wasn't aware and invited.” Sandra said and Marie could hear the pout in her voice.
“He only just mentioned today. I’m sure you'll be on the guest list.” Marie said.
“Alright then, I'll shop for a party dress for you as well in Paris. How awesome is that?”
“Fabulous!” Marie said and then laughed as Sandra ended the call.
A new dress was the last thing on Marie’s mind but maybe it wasn't a bad idea to dress up nicely and let her hair down for a night.
Of course she still had to be on duty and be on high alert. Steven also requested a debrief in the morning after every social event. Nevermind that each department and sub agency within their group usually submitted close out reports. Steven always demanded that she stand before him and talk about things she felt could have been done and managed better. At first Marie thought it was just something he did to wind her up until she noticed that he always worked her feedback into subsequent events. Kicking into full gear, Marie spent the next two hours answering calls about the party, offering insights and taking down questions for Steven. The whole thing was already giving her a bloody headache.
“Marie. Come with me.” Steven said as he walked into his office. She must have been engrossed in her thoughts because she hadn't even heard him come in.
“You wanted to see me?” She said, hovering around the door.
“What's the progress?”
“Err, I do have some questions for you, Sir. But I think it's best if I set up a meeting between you and Ellen to discuss some critical details like the guest list.”
“Okay. Tell her to come up in an hour.”
“Okay, Steven. Do I add your wife, err, Sandra for the party?”
“Of course not.” Steven said and Marie nodded carefully. She had guessed as much but hadn't wanted to hurt Sandra's feelings.
“And oh yeah, one more thing.” Steven said, typing into his phone.
“Set up a meeting with the lawyers.”
“Okay Sir, concerning?”
“The divorce.”
“Yes Sir.” Marie responded. How was she going to break the news to Sandra?
Steven King reclined in his seat, closed his eyes and placed his fatigued feet on the plush mahogany table in front of him. One reason he had chosen Alden King’s new headquarters to overlook the beach was so that the constant sloshing of the waves would calm him in times like this. The journey to acquiring the Kazoku Inc account had been riddled with more stress and with anxiety than he had had to face in a long time. After countless meetings and several pitch documents were presented, Steven had been stumped on why the deal was yet to come through. Until he had heard from his grapevine contacts that the owner of Kazoku Inc was only willing to do business with people who were married. At first, Steven had been livid about that kind of hogwash. How did being unmarried affect his ability to develop compelling ads and campaigns for the Kazoku Inc brands? Steven had been willing to abandon the whole process until his grandfather had laughed in his face and told him that he hadn't expect
“Who the hell does he think he is? Ignoring me, treating me like shit?” Sandra shouted in anger as she dabbed eye shadow on Marie’s left eye.“Hmm…” Marie said, already regretting coming to Sandra's house when she was still in such a foul mood. Truth was since Thursday when she had signed the divorce papers in Steven’s office, Sandra had been upset.“He’s such a monster, Marie. How do you cope? Married for seven weeks and he didn't even so much as hold my hand! Our last and only kiss was on our bloody wedding day!” Marie had long given up defending Steven and reminding Sandra that it was supposed to be marriage-in-name only because it only made Sandra get all prickly and accuse Marie of still being in love with Steven.“Why are you going through all this trouble anyway, Marie. Not like he's going to notice you and want you.”Sandra must have caught Marie's eyes in the mirror because she immediately tried to apologize.“Look, I just mean that you should be careful. See what I went thr
Even with a week's notice, Marie had handled the brief to execute the celebration party to perfection. One thing he could say about the girl was that she got her work done. There were so many things she handled the way he would. He glanced at her now, gulping what looked to be another glass of cocktail. Was she planning to get drunk tonight? Her eyes met his for a second before she looked away. What was up with her? Should he talk to her? Probably not. She had worked hard enough for him to cut her some slack. If she wanted to let her hair down, she deserved it.She was running her free hand through her thick curls now and throwing furtive glances in his direction. Maybe he should go to talk to her. What if she took it the wrong way? She looked so beautiful tonight that he knew she was feeling more self-conscious than she usually was.Several eyes had been fixated on her from the moment she had walked through the door in a backless satin dress. The Marie he knew was a lady who adored ca
Marie walked into her apartment and kicked off her heels. Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and let out the breath she had been holding.Steven King had dropped her off and told her he would decide what to do about her in the morning.Knots swirled her belly as his words rang in her mind. He had called it a little kiss. That little kiss was better than all the fantasies Marie had had since the day she realized she was falling in love with him.Lost in her reverie, Marie went through the motions of undressing, removing her makeup and putting her jewelry away. A little part of her heart couldn't believe she had actually kissed Steven King. She felt both excited and fearful at the same time.Should she tell Sandra? No, bad idea. Sandra wouldn't understand and Marie knew she would end up saying something that would hurt her. Her insides were trembling so much that she itched to tell someone. She was still lost in her unsettling thoughts when her phone beeped. It was Ald
Marie's fingers drummed on the steering wheel as she waited for the light to turn green. When it did, she honked to signal the driver in front of her.Where was his mind? As soon as he moved, Marie slid forward and tore across the road. The sooner she got to Alden Kings Inc., the better for her. A few moments later, the great white building loomed before her and she drove into the parking lot. As expected, only a few cars were littered around. How could a place she had been in over a thousand times in the last ten years make her so nervous?Trying to take a deep breath but failing, she sighed and unhooked her seat belt. Whatever was waiting for her in Steven King’s office wouldn't go away so she might as well face it.Dread shoved aside, Marie soaked in the peace and quiet. The usual hustle and bustle of people coming in and going out, and the normal office clatter was absent. She wished it could be like this every day but knew that was a tall dream.“I don't have all day, you know.
Steven watched as Marie scrambled about looking for a towel for him to dry his face with. Waiting for her to take her seat, he dabbed his face with the towel she offered.“Married?” Marie cried in a shrill voice.“Yes. Why not?’ He asked, raising his brows and narrowing his eyes at the look on her face. He knew a lot of women who would grab the chance in a heartbeat, but he also knew Marie wasn’t one of them. If he was being honest, he was asking her because he knew she had no interest whatsoever in marrying him and that she wouldn’t make a fuss when the charade had to end.“I don’t… I don’t know what to say…” Marie confessed in a shaky voice. Steven could see her feet trembling under the table. Was the prospect of a fake marriage so terrifying? Was there a boyfriend somewhere she was considering? It dawned on him that he had never asked about her personal life so he didn’t know. But Steven knew Marie wouldn’t have kissed him if she had a boyfriend regardless of any altruistic intenti
The morning after Steven King proposed a fake marriage to her, Marie awoke with a splitting headache. After her meeting with him, she had driven straight to a bar and gotten herself drunk. Thinking about marrying him had sounded easy while he sat across from her and explained it but as soon as she had time to think it through, Marie had realized that her feelings concerning the matter were far from straightforward. She had loved Steven so long that she was prepared to marry him in a heartbeat if it were real. The thought of a fake marriage was what haunted her the most. How was he supposed to keep her feelings secret for the next couple of months? At the party, she had been so surprised at how fervently he had kissed her back. If he kept kissing her like that, Marie wasn't sure how much her heart would be able to take before it blurted out its love for him. And then there was the issue of Sandra. Marie knew that sooner or later, Sandra would find out what was going on. Even though sh
Light filtered rudely into Steven King’s room, tugging at his eyelids until he was forced to open them. A quick glance at his watch revealed that the time was 7 AM. Ever since his proposal to Marie, he had been battling several thoughts that were stuck on a loop in his mind. Today was Monday, and that meant that he had to put away any doubts he had and made his romance with Marie seem believable. It also meant that he had to take sniffing out the mole in Alden Kings Inc. more seriously. At first, when proposed ideas and insights had begun to leak, Steven had waved it aside but over the past few months, the frequent occurrence was beginning to rankle him. He had placed Zed Norton in charge of finding out who was sabotaging them but Zed’s efforts had turned out nothing. The leaks were the only reason he was being forced into the situation with Marie. It was the only reason why instead of spending time working on productive campaigns, he was thinking about how to smooth over ruffled f
“What?” Steven asked in a voice so phony that everyone turned to stare at him.“Is that blood, uncle Steve? It is. There's blood on your shirt.”“Shhhhh, buddy. Don't make a big deal about it. I cut myself.”“You did? Cool! Let me see.” Rick exclaimed, as though he was being given front row tickets to a fun show.“Richard! Get back to class!”“But granny…”“Now!” Amelia boomed as a disgruntled Rick turned in his heel and headed towards the stairs, waving to Steven as he went.“You may want to get that cleaned up before leaving.” Alden said to him as he wheeled himself into his room.“Hand it to me.” Amelia said.“Oh? I didn't actually cut myself.”“I know. I’m not stupid. Alden keeps sneaking off in his wheelchair and I've seen some funny looking characters hanging around. I don't want to know what all this is about but I hope you're both not being stupid. And he's finally getting the exercise ”“Ah.” Steven replied as he took off his shirt and handed it to Amelia. He walked with Stev
Maybe it was the fact that the guy was a psychopath who had put his wife in a coma or the fact that he had such a punchable face but Steven didn't stop until Smith stopped laughing and started to cough.“Oh, I could go on for hours. I'm only just getting started.”“Kill me, please. I’d love to see how you get the answers you want.” Smith saidSteven snarled as he shook his knuckles.“Oh, make no mistake, Smith. You are going to die. You're going to pay for what you did to Cadence. I’ll make sure about that even if it's the last thing I do.”“I keep telling your stupid old man. I didn't kill Cadence Steele.”“The same way you didn't run my wife over?”“Exactly. I mean I know about it, make no mistake. But I neither authorized nor did it.”“You know what Smith, you're full of crap and I'm tired of doing this with you, so start talking. There's no use stalling too because you're not getting out of this till I'm satisfied.”“Look, I know you think I'm the one you’re looking for but I'm no
“What do you mean?”“I mean I've never seen you so affected by anything, Alden. Not even when your own son got into an accident.”Alden’s eyes hardened as he grunted.“That wasn't an accident. It was a stupid decision made by someone who should have known better.”Steven fought the urge to roll his eyes. Of course Alden would say that about his father. Alden had never cut him any slack.“Right, but you're deflecting the question. Why do you act like she means so much to you? What's this about?”“The only person that can give you the answers you want us is your wife, Steven.”What did that mean? Was there something about Alden and Marie he didn't know?“I don't understand what you mean, Alden.”“Are you ready to leave now?” Alden asked, pushing his chair backwards as he averted his eyes from Steven. Steven sighed and walked ahead of his grandfather. It was funny that Alden would rather die than let Steven touch his wheelchair while he allowed Amelia to help him all the time. He also kn
“Where are you?”“Hello to you too, Alden.” Steven said as he honked at the driver in front of him. Did people drive with their brains turned off these days?“I'm at your house and Dr. Terence tells me you’re not here.” The accusation in his tone spoke volumes but Steven chose to ignore it.“If you’d let me know you were coming over, perhaps I may have been ready to receive you.” Steven answered in a cool tone.“When you asked for this leave, you did say it was so you could remain at your wife's side, not gallivant around town.”“What do you want, Alden?”“No, listen to me young man. You're the one who’ll get down here fast if you want to hear what I have to say.” He answered before hanging up the phone. Steven exhaled as he massaged his temple. The last thing he wanted was Alden sticking his nose into how he was caring for Marie. Twenty minutes later, he pulled into the house and headed to the room where Marie was. Alden was in conversation with Dr. Terrence and didn't notice at firs
Dr. Terrence met him outside Marie's room and was about to say something but Steven held up his hand to forestall any comment.“I need everyone to leave for a few moments.”“Okay, Mr.King but if I may…”“Now, please.” Steven repeated as frazzled nurses began filing out of the room. He wasn't sure if he could stomach any more bad news so whatever Dr. Terrence had to say would have to wait.Dr. Terrence nodded and exited the room. Steven looked down at Marie and smiled at her. Even in a coma, her beauty took his breath away.He let out a long sigh and sat beside her bed before taking her hand in his.“You know, for the past few weeks, Marie. I’ve been mad at myself. Thinking about where I went wrong and how I could have failed you so much.”He squeezed her hand and checked to see if there was any reaction on her face. Her eyes remained blank and unfocused as they had been.“I’ve been mad at myself for letting you go through so much pain. For the fact that you're stuck somewhere between
Steven's mind whirled with thoughts as he heard the sound of Zed Norton's car backing out of his driveway. He ran a hand through his hair as he thought about what had transpired between Sandra and him. How on earth was he going to explain this to Marie when she came out of the coma? He could just imagine the look on his face.“You know when you were stuck in a coma fighting for your life? Yeah well, I slept with your best friend. And I don't even remember doing it.”He let out another curse and Sarah tossed him a concerned glance. He let out a sigh and plunked into the chair.“Any special orders for lunch, Sir? The chef wants to know…” She askedThe thought of having any food right now made him want to puke. Whenever he closed his eyes, all he could see was Cadence lying in a pool of her own blood.“I'm not hungry, Sarah. I’ll head out and probably eat something.”“Okay, Sir. Do I make any provisions for Ms.Rakes?”“No, Ms. Rakes wouldn't be returning anymore.” Steven replied as she
“What are you doing?” Steven whispered as he jerked away from Sandra. His head was reeling from pain. Had she really kissed him?“Sorry. I don't know what happened…You looked so sad and I wasn't thinking.” She said as she abruptly got on her feet and cleared her plate. She grabbed the glass and was about to take the bottle of wine with her when Steven dragged it from her.“You can't drink the whole bottle, Steven.” She said in a quiet voice.“Get out.” He said, in a voice harsher than he intended. She glared at him for some seconds before wilting and walking out of the room.He took a swig of the bottle and sighed. Did she deserve such hostility from him for a mistake? She had only been trying to help him after all. It seemed all he was capable of these days was messing up on a grand scale. His actions kept hurting the people he called friends and family even when he didn't intend for them too. Tomorrow, he'd apologize for being bitchy to her. For now, he had only one thing on his min
“Thank you for calling me. I’ll drive him home. The last couple of weeks have been very hard with his wife being in a coma, you know.”Steven could hear Sandra talking to someone. He tried to remember calling her. Had he done that himself or had Tony called her? What time was it? She was looking at him now with something akin to disappointment on her face. Well, he didn't bloody care.“Come on, let's get you home.” She said, as she tried to help him to his feet. Steven chuckled as the both fell back on the leather seat. What was she thinking? That her tiny body could support his weight?“Is something funny, Steven King? You should be ashamed of yourself. You’re drunk. No one's been able to reach you all afternoon. James and Joanna left after breakfast and have been trying to get across to you. Your cell was switched off. And then I get a call that you're wasted in a bar!”“Arghhh. Stop talking in my face.” He mumbled. Her voice was beginning to give him a headache. He wasn't that drun
After Steven got off the call with the 911 operator, he thought about what to do next. He couldn't go home to Marie in this state, knowing that her suffering was caused by him. Nor was he in the mood to face either James or Joanna. He couldn't go to Alden's as that meant endless lectures he wasn't ready for. He knew the only thing likely to get him through the next couple of hours. He turned off his cell phone and drove off. Thirty minutes later, he parked outside Ziggler’s. The tiny, nondescript bar was exactly as he remembered it. He hesitated for a minute before heading in. He had promised James that he wasn't ever coming back here and for over ten years he had kept that promise. But there was no turning back now. A woman was dead because of him, another was in a coma fighting for her life. He needed this, if only for a few minutes. He opened the door, alighted and walked in before he could lose courage. Inside the tiny bar was exactly as he remembered it. How long since he had sat
