Steven King reclined in his seat, closed his eyes and placed his fatigued feet on the plush mahogany table in front of him. One reason he had chosen Alden King’s new headquarters to overlook the beach was so that the constant sloshing of the waves would calm him in times like this.
The journey to acquiring the Kazoku Inc account had been riddled with more stress and with anxiety than he had had to face in a long time.
After countless meetings and several pitch documents were presented, Steven had been stumped on why the deal was yet to come through. Until he had heard from his grapevine contacts that the owner of Kazoku Inc was only willing to do business with people who were married. At first, Steven had been livid about that kind of hogwash. How did being unmarried affect his ability to develop compelling ads and campaigns for the Kazoku Inc brands? Steven had been willing to abandon the whole process until his grandfather had laughed in his face and told him that he hadn't expected much from him anyway. His grandfather was constantly berating his father and Steven. Alden Kings was something of a legend and he made sure that everyone who came within six feet of him found out. In Alden's mind, the only one who could run the agency and expand it was himself, never mind that he was now 85 years old and bedridden as a result of his chronic diabetes and high blood pressure. However, everytime Steven and his father James went to see Alden, they had to withstand his caustic comments. In Alden’s mind, Steven running the company was a disaster waiting to happen.
“Hello, Sir? Do I come back?” Marie, his secretary asked as she came into his office, cradling some files in her hands.
“What's this about?” He asked, not even bothering to open his eyes.
“Err, the lawyers are here with the divorce papers.”
“Great, send them in. How's the party prep going?”
Steven opened his eyes now and saw worry etched on Marie's face which she quickly tried to hide with a smile.
“Great, Sir. We’ll be ready.” Marie said. Steven nodded even though he was pretty sure he had heard Marie in a shouting match with the event team lead, Ellen, for mixing up the VIP menu.
However, she knew better than to bother him with such details.
“Will that be all, Sir?” Marie asked, shifting from one foot to another.
“Yes. Please call that woman here as soon as possible so we can sign these papers and get this over with.”
“Right, yes Sir.” Marie said and then went back to her desk.
Steven frowned as Zed Norton, Head of Strategy, walked into his office. Zed was always on his neck to approve one initiative or another which in most cases Steven couldn't see the point of.
“Zed? Do we have a meeting?”
“Look, Steven, it will only take a minute. I just found out some trouble is brewing.”
“Trouble? On which account?” Steven asked, sitting up now.
“The Cheggo Foods brand. Apparently, the competition has launched a campaign quite similar to their new campaign which was due to launch next week.”
“Oh, for Pete’ sake. Zed. Where are we on finding out who's doing all these leaks? Do I need to fire the whole bloody team to get results?” Steven could feel the vein in his neck popping out but he could scarcely care right now. These occurrences were becoming too frequent. The last thing the Alden Kings Group needed now was reputation issues.
“We’re actively working on it. Our last trail led nowhere but I'm pretty sure we’ll find the mole soon. Right now, damage control measures are in place. Just thought of letting you know.” Zed said before heading out and leaving Steven in the company of his riotous thoughts.
“Marie! Get in here.” Steven yelled into the phone. Thirty seconds later, Marie walked into his office.
“Where are the damn lawyers?”
“I saw you with Zed, so I asked them to wait in the hall.” She explained.
“Look, send them in and get that woman here ASAP!”
“Yes, Steven.” Marie said and nearly bolted out of the office.
In the ten years that Marie had worked for him, there had been several times Alden had thought she was going to quit. He had a reputation after all, he knew she and the other staff called him Godzilla. Not that he cared, anyway as he simply didn't have time to carry the weight of other people's opinions. However, she hadn't quit and had stuck it out with him, and Steven secretly admired her for it. Not that he was ever going to admit it to her. It was Marie who had discreetly arranged for the secret marriage and found the “perfect” candidate even if everything about Sandra had rubbed him the wrong way from the get-go. Why was she so chirpy?
“Hello, Steven. The lawyers.” Marie said as she ushered two men in navy blue suits to sit opposite him.
“The Woman?” He asked.
“Err, on her way here. It was quite short notice as she had only gotten back from Paris…” Marie broke off as she looked at his face.
Twenty minutes later, Sandra Rakes walked into his office and sat across from him. He listened as the lawyers explained every detail of the arrangement and got her signature. They then produced an NDA which she was also made to sign. Steven watched her features to see signs of unwillingness and there were none. This was probably all in a day's work for her. Marie, on the other hand, looked somewhat teary. Steven knew there was a connection between the two women.
“We’re all done now. Thank you, Miss Rakes. Expect to receive the outstanding settlement in five working days.”
“Okay.” Sandra said and gathered her things to leave. She stole a glance at Steven who pretended not to be looking. To be honest, he was simply glad the whole affair was over and he could go back to his life.
As Marie walked Sandra out of his office, he thought about how hard Marie had worked to pull this off. Perhaps, she deserved a day off. No need to drag her to the party. She barely enjoyed those things anyway, all she did was stand in a corner in her nondescript black dress, with no makeup and sip glasses of Sherry. No doubt he knew she'd be more than happy to sit this one out.
“Who the hell does he think he is? Ignoring me, treating me like shit?” Sandra shouted in anger as she dabbed eye shadow on Marie’s left eye.“Hmm…” Marie said, already regretting coming to Sandra's house when she was still in such a foul mood. Truth was since Thursday when she had signed the divorce papers in Steven’s office, Sandra had been upset.“He’s such a monster, Marie. How do you cope? Married for seven weeks and he didn't even so much as hold my hand! Our last and only kiss was on our bloody wedding day!” Marie had long given up defending Steven and reminding Sandra that it was supposed to be marriage-in-name only because it only made Sandra get all prickly and accuse Marie of still being in love with Steven.“Why are you going through all this trouble anyway, Marie. Not like he's going to notice you and want you.”Sandra must have caught Marie's eyes in the mirror because she immediately tried to apologize.“Look, I just mean that you should be careful. See what I went thr
Even with a week's notice, Marie had handled the brief to execute the celebration party to perfection. One thing he could say about the girl was that she got her work done. There were so many things she handled the way he would. He glanced at her now, gulping what looked to be another glass of cocktail. Was she planning to get drunk tonight? Her eyes met his for a second before she looked away. What was up with her? Should he talk to her? Probably not. She had worked hard enough for him to cut her some slack. If she wanted to let her hair down, she deserved it.She was running her free hand through her thick curls now and throwing furtive glances in his direction. Maybe he should go to talk to her. What if she took it the wrong way? She looked so beautiful tonight that he knew she was feeling more self-conscious than she usually was.Several eyes had been fixated on her from the moment she had walked through the door in a backless satin dress. The Marie he knew was a lady who adored ca
Marie walked into her apartment and kicked off her heels. Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and let out the breath she had been holding.Steven King had dropped her off and told her he would decide what to do about her in the morning.Knots swirled her belly as his words rang in her mind. He had called it a little kiss. That little kiss was better than all the fantasies Marie had had since the day she realized she was falling in love with him.Lost in her reverie, Marie went through the motions of undressing, removing her makeup and putting her jewelry away. A little part of her heart couldn't believe she had actually kissed Steven King. She felt both excited and fearful at the same time.Should she tell Sandra? No, bad idea. Sandra wouldn't understand and Marie knew she would end up saying something that would hurt her. Her insides were trembling so much that she itched to tell someone. She was still lost in her unsettling thoughts when her phone beeped. It was Ald
Marie's fingers drummed on the steering wheel as she waited for the light to turn green. When it did, she honked to signal the driver in front of her.Where was his mind? As soon as he moved, Marie slid forward and tore across the road. The sooner she got to Alden Kings Inc., the better for her. A few moments later, the great white building loomed before her and she drove into the parking lot. As expected, only a few cars were littered around. How could a place she had been in over a thousand times in the last ten years make her so nervous?Trying to take a deep breath but failing, she sighed and unhooked her seat belt. Whatever was waiting for her in Steven King’s office wouldn't go away so she might as well face it.Dread shoved aside, Marie soaked in the peace and quiet. The usual hustle and bustle of people coming in and going out, and the normal office clatter was absent. She wished it could be like this every day but knew that was a tall dream.“I don't have all day, you know.
Steven watched as Marie scrambled about looking for a towel for him to dry his face with. Waiting for her to take her seat, he dabbed his face with the towel she offered.“Married?” Marie cried in a shrill voice.“Yes. Why not?’ He asked, raising his brows and narrowing his eyes at the look on her face. He knew a lot of women who would grab the chance in a heartbeat, but he also knew Marie wasn’t one of them. If he was being honest, he was asking her because he knew she had no interest whatsoever in marrying him and that she wouldn’t make a fuss when the charade had to end.“I don’t… I don’t know what to say…” Marie confessed in a shaky voice. Steven could see her feet trembling under the table. Was the prospect of a fake marriage so terrifying? Was there a boyfriend somewhere she was considering? It dawned on him that he had never asked about her personal life so he didn’t know. But Steven knew Marie wouldn’t have kissed him if she had a boyfriend regardless of any altruistic intenti
The morning after Steven King proposed a fake marriage to her, Marie awoke with a splitting headache. After her meeting with him, she had driven straight to a bar and gotten herself drunk. Thinking about marrying him had sounded easy while he sat across from her and explained it but as soon as she had time to think it through, Marie had realized that her feelings concerning the matter were far from straightforward. She had loved Steven so long that she was prepared to marry him in a heartbeat if it were real. The thought of a fake marriage was what haunted her the most. How was he supposed to keep her feelings secret for the next couple of months? At the party, she had been so surprised at how fervently he had kissed her back. If he kept kissing her like that, Marie wasn't sure how much her heart would be able to take before it blurted out its love for him. And then there was the issue of Sandra. Marie knew that sooner or later, Sandra would find out what was going on. Even though sh
Light filtered rudely into Steven King’s room, tugging at his eyelids until he was forced to open them. A quick glance at his watch revealed that the time was 7 AM. Ever since his proposal to Marie, he had been battling several thoughts that were stuck on a loop in his mind. Today was Monday, and that meant that he had to put away any doubts he had and made his romance with Marie seem believable. It also meant that he had to take sniffing out the mole in Alden Kings Inc. more seriously. At first, when proposed ideas and insights had begun to leak, Steven had waved it aside but over the past few months, the frequent occurrence was beginning to rankle him. He had placed Zed Norton in charge of finding out who was sabotaging them but Zed’s efforts had turned out nothing. The leaks were the only reason he was being forced into the situation with Marie. It was the only reason why instead of spending time working on productive campaigns, he was thinking about how to smooth over ruffled f
Steven watched calmly as a panicky Marie paced back and forth in his office. The poor girl was so frightened that a part of him wanted to call the whole thing off. So what if he wasn't married? How did that affect his ability to run the company? “Marie, calm down. What are you so nervous about?”“But they were meant to be here by 1PM. 1PM. It’s barely 11 and they show up. What are we going to do?”“I won't tell you to calm down again, Marie. Breathe.”Taking a deep breath, Marie dropped into the chair beside him.“So, how do you know they're here? Did you see them?” Steven asked, taking a sip from his cup of iced latte.“I was nervous about not knowing the exact time they would show up and so I asked Lara and Thelma to be on the lookout for them. Lara just texted them that two men fitting their description walked in and were logging their details at the front desk.”“Okay, okay. So what's the problem here?.”“I don't know, Steven, do you think this would work?” Marie asked, the fear
