AYLA BAILORE
I was so dead. I felt my legs tremble as they instantly lost their strength. The King was standing right in front of us. The heat of his gaze was on me, but I dared not look. Instead, I kept my gaze fixed on the spotless sheen of the marble floor. “Alpha Arnold,” I heard the King's voice, it was huskier and deeper than I remembered a moment ago. But that wasn't what made me furrow my brows. It was the way he addressed Arnold with a streak of emotion in them. Anger maybe. He'd call him Alpha, but Arnold wasn't the Alpha of his pack. That much I knew. Or was he somehow related to the Iron Claw Pack Alpha? “Your Majesty,” Arnold mused, almost in subtle mockery, but I was sure that tone should get him killed. No one should speak to the King with such disrespect. I bit my lips immediately as I reminded myself of my own predicament. “We didn't receive your letter of interest, I didn't think the Iron Claw would be interested in something like this,” “It was a last-minute change and I was under the impression that the Luna Queen Selection was for every pack, the Iron Claw Pack not excluded,” Arnold said. I didn't know a thing about the pack's politics or what the hell was going on here, but I could feel the unmistakable tension in the air. It was raw and palpable. And judging from the grave-like silence in the hall, I knew that I wasn't the only one feeling it. There was something between these two. Something that… “You,” I jumped slightly at the sound of the King's voice. I could feel the heat of his gaze on me and involuntarily my eyes lifted to meet his. His face was an emotionless mask of ice. And trust me, terrifying as hell that I couldn't stop the shiver that shook my body over and over again. At that moment I was thankful for Arnold's hand on my arm, it was the only thing keeping my legs from crashing onto the floor. Once more, I felt the King's gaze slip to Arnold's hand on me, the golden flecks in his eyes darkened, and for a second it almost felt like all hell was about to break loose when a beautiful young woman stepped up beside him. “King Lucian, the Oracle is here already,” The woman informed, all the while the King's unreadable stare was on me. “Let's begin,” He walked away, and took his seat on the tall chair. Next to him was a woman dressed in a white cloak with a hood over her head. That must be the moon goddess Oracle. Never met her before and never thought I'd ever get to see her. Just then one of the men from the royal squad stepped on the podium and instructed the women participating in the Queen Selection to step forward. My heart raced in my chest. I cast a nervous glance at Arnold but his gaze was on the King. I had taken a step away from him when he gripped my arm again, leaning close to whisper in my ear. “Whatever you do, remember, Emily's life is on the line,” With that he released me. I joined the line of women standing in front of the podium. There were over a dozen contenders lined up. One look at them, and all I could see was determination and fierceness. Almost as if they'd been preparing for this their whole life in hopes that a day like this would come. “I'm screwed,” As the words left my lips, someone giggled next to me. I glanced left to find another contender standing so close to me. Pretty face, a beautiful smile, and red hair that stood out. “Hi, I'm Lara,” The red-haired chirped beside me, and despite my ever-pounding heart I couldn't help but return her smile. “I'm Ayla,” I whispered back, moving my eyes from her to the throne seat, and unexpectedly, I found the King's gaze on me. “Welcome contenders,” The King's man from earlier greeted again, his voice vibrating through the walls, gaining everyone's attention. “It's an honor to have everyone here. You've come from far and wide to compete for the honor of being named Luna Queen,” His words boomed out over the crowd. He was dressed in a black dress shirt and black pants like everyone else in the royal squad including the king. But there was something that slightly tore him apart from the rest, and I couldn't help but wonder who he was. “Prince Dane,” Lara whispered beside me, answering my unspoken question. “He's the King's only cousin and moderator of the competition alongside Lady Triss,” She pointed at the beautiful lady from earlier, now standing next to King Lucian, whispering only the goddess knows into his ear. Genuine curiosity filled me this time. “Who's she?” I kept my voice low, asking my new friend. “Triss? Oh, she's like the King's shadow. One could say most trusted, he barely goes anywhere without her,” Lara informed, and my gaze went back to them. I could already tell there was something between them. The thought alone made my insides churn unpleasantly, and I hated it. Someone like that bastard would have an endless line of lovers, so why didn't he just pick from them, instead he had to come up with this ridiculous competition. “But Triss isn't like us,” Lara's words brought my attention to her. “She's a witch,” She whispered and I could barely contain my surprise. Just then, Triss stepped forward. “The competition will officially begin tomorrow. We will have a series of challenges. Every challenge will be carefully recorded, and at the end, the contender with the most points and who has found favor with the King will be our Queen,” She spoke in a calm, entrancing voice before moving her fingers in the air and immediately a glowing mark appeared on our wrists. “It's a temporary mark of the King, it automatically disappears when a contender is disqualified or eliminated from the selection,” Triss shared some vital information, and soon, Dane stepped forward and informed us of the dos and don'ts in the game, once again welcoming us all. I really couldn't believe I was now a part of this, whether I liked it or not. For my survival, I had to start thinking with my brain and figure out a way Emily and I could escape this nightmare. The real party started and the guests were enjoying themselves, including the contenders. Meanwhile, I could barely get a morsel down my throat. Not with Arnold's gaze following my every move. But it wasn't just his. I could also feel the heat of the King's gaze. It had also never left me, and I couldn't find the courage to glance in his direction. The music changed and some guests started appearing on the dancefloor. I was with Lara and had no interest in participating in that when I heard a voice next to me, and a hand stretched out. “Care for a dance, Ayla Bailore?” The voice sounded familiar. So familiar I felt the sickening feeling that crawled up my spine. This wasn't good. One glance at the figure towering above me, and I froze. Every bone in my body trembled at the sight of him, Colton. Garrick's very own beta and one of the many assholes who made my life hell as a slave. Shit. In all my worry I had completely forgotten that Alpha Garrick had also received an invitation, hell, they had even chosen the most worthy she-wolf of the pack. Madison Wilkerson, the Betas daughter and another nemesis of mine. She was also Karen's best friend, so imagine just how much she'd hate me. “My apologies, but I'll pass,” I tried to keep my voice from quivering but with the tremble that went down my spine, it was next to impossible. Colton didn't take the hint, instead, he grabbed my hand, regardless, leaning in to whisper. “It's in your best interest you comply mutt, otherwise, everyone will find out what a gold-digging whore you are,” “Everything good?” Lara yelled over the blasting music in the hall, and I was thankful for the loud sound, at least no one would have heard anything. I smiled at her nodding, before bringing my attention back to Colton. “Lead the way,” He led me to the crowded dance floor, one hand on my waist and the other on my hand. “What the fuck are you doing here mutt? Does Garrick even know you are here?” His eyes now burned with anger, and his hold on me tightened. I pasted a smile on my lips, I could feel the heat of a few stares my way, and one of them belonged to Arnold, watching me with an unreadable, yet dangerous gleam in his eyes. “You escaped, didn't you? I don't know what lies you spilled to Alpha Arnold, but I plan to remedy that. And once I drag your disgusting ass back to Garrick, you're done for,” His threats rose fear in my chest, but I squashed it down instantly. “Are you done?” I didn't know where the bravery came from as I cocked my head sideways, once again grateful for the loud music. “Because I am. The only reason I agreed to dance with you was to set things straight. Tell Garrick he doesn't own me. Not anymore. I am no longer a part of the Red River Pack. I belong with the Iron Claw Pack now and as you can see, Arnold personally brought me here. He knows everything,” I was lying through my teeth. Arnold knew nothing about me aside from the pack I came from, but Colton didn't have to know that. I didn't even want to imagine what would happen if Arnold found out I hadn't just escaped the Red River Pack but I was mated to the Alpha. One of the rules that had been said tonight had been that each contender mustn't be claimed or spoken for. Which in a literal sense didn't apply to me, but I had a mate I was still very much linked to. And that alone changed everything and could ruin everything for me. “But if you want to take up the matter with Arnold, please do, even though only a fool will go against the Iron Claw Pack. With that being all, I'll take me to leave,” I tried to pull away before my nerves gave me away and showed how heavily terrified I was of him, of Garrick, and the situation I was in. But Colton's hands gripped me tighter to the point of pain. My eyes widened and the dangerous wave of anger vibrating scared me. Colton was exactly like Garrick, they'd been friends for a long time, and was as twisted as his Alpha, but surely he wasn't stupid enough to try to hurt me in a hall full of many wolves, right? “Colton, let go,” I almost whimpered from the pain. His claws had elongated a little and were digging into my waist and my hand. “You won't make a fool of my Alpha. Of our pack. You're his and will remain his until the day you die. Once he finds out you're here, it's over whore. Come with me now or—” “Or risk losing your head for touching one of the King's women,” A cool, calm, and controlled voice sounded behind me. I froze. Even Colton froze.AYLA BAILORE Colton's eyes shifted a little behind me and it was like he was a second from passing out. That was a first. For someone as dangerous and wicked as Colton, this sight was a little bit terrifying. But I guess I should speak for myself, I couldn't see my own reflection but I was sure it was just as bad as Colton. I knew who that deep, seductive voice that held a subtle charm in it belonged to. The stranger I had openly insulted. It was King Lucian.Colton immediately let go of me, head bowed to the King, but unfortunately, I was still having great difficulty breaking from my frozen state. I didn't even know how Colton disappeared and the King had now taken his position.Warmth flowed into my body as King Lucian held my hand, and a tingling, utterly disturbing sensation ignited when he touched me on my waist, breaking me out of my frozen state. He tugged me closer to him. Too close for my liking. And too close that everyone was now sparing glances at us. If the King notic
AYLA BAILORE I stared nervously at the beautiful, magical hairpin on the dressing table in my suite. I had been led into a room after the party, and surprisingly, this would be my room until I either got kicked out or the competition came to an end. I didn't know what exactly to hope for at the moment.Lila had left me and returned to her quarters for the night, and considering how long and exhausting one night had already been, and the competition was starting tomorrow, I should be getting as much sleep as needed, instead here I was, pacing restlessly in my suite, unsure of exactly what to do or better still, how to do it. Arnold was absolutely clear again before he left, Emily's safety in his pack depended on my success tonight.I closed my eyes briefly, resting my head on the glass windows. The night's darkness covered everything, but the breeze was calming, and reassuring. You can do this Ayla. I repeated one more time before grabbing the seemingly harmless hairpin on the table
LUCIAN BLACKTHORNI could still smell her on my skin. Feel the heat of her lips on mine. She was perfect, so perfect for me if only I hadn't met her during this circus show, and she wasn't from the Iron Claw Pack and wasn't a potential spy working for my enemies.I snapped my eyes open, still lying on the bed even hours after she had left. I couldn't help but wonder what she had injected into me, and what it was supposed to do. Was it meant to kill me?Well considering she was sent by the Lannisters anything was possible, and at that thought alone, I heard my wolf, Nero growl in anger. If it had been someone else that had snuck into my room tonight especially sent by the Iron Claw Pack, they'd be lucky if they got to see the next morning light. But with Ayla, I couldn't.Nero has been pissed, agitated even ever since we found her in the garden. Our mate. The one created just for us, but unfortunately, for some reason couldn't feel the mate bond. At first, I thought she was suppressing
AYLA BAILORE “What are you doing here?” Lucian asked, his voice cool and calm, but dangerously it reminded me of the calm right before a storm.I wasn't sure who his question seemed to be directed at but his cold gaze was on me, and somewhere deep beneath, I could see the fury flames in the shadows as his gaze slipped to Arnold's hands on my shoulder and waist, pinning me to the wall. Our position was definitely as bad as it looked. It could give the wrong impression.Stylishly, I pushed Arnold away, and thankfully, he let go of me, turning to face Lucian with a lopsided smile as though they were old friends and he hadn't in fact snuck into the palace.“I don't like to repeat myself,” The king growled, and that fury flame in his eyes was a second away from emerging through the ice, sending shivers down my spine.“Your majesty—” I started, having no idea what to even say, but Arnold cut me off.“What does it look like? I was worried about her, and wanted to see for myself if she was s
AYLA BAILORE The blinding light covered my vision for a few seconds, and once I stepped out through the other side of the portal I was in a forest. There was no sign of the other contenders, nor Triss or any of the large crowd, and sadly, not even Lucian.I took out the map, tracking the direction of the closest cave, while I searched for the Moon wisp. Triss had mentioned we could find them in a certain part of the forest they considered home.I had no idea how long I'd be walking with no luck when I came across a large field of oak trees. I didn't know how but I felt it right before I saw it. The tiny flare of warm light at the bottom of the tree gave everything around them a silvery cast. A Moon wisp.Slowly, I lowered myself on one knee, bringing my palm forward to the beautiful glowing blue light. It was more beautiful than I had imagined. To my surprise, it only glowed brighter, a soft sound coming from it, almost like it was trying to communicate with me, but unfortunately, I
LUCIAN BLACKTHORN It's been over thirty minutes now. I was getting restless, and anxious, an emotion I had never experienced for years now. My fear only intensified as one more contender lit up their torch in the cave, and the Triss portal opened up for her, leading her out of the forest.I could feel the tension in my bones as I stared at the miniature version of the entire forest within the Court territory. Triss had created it with magic and through it, we could track every contender and keep watch of the competition since we couldn't livestream the Court territory. It would have been better that way but for obvious reasons, the happenings within the Court territory should be kept private. It was the center of the Supreme Court. And on the South and North borders were the fortresses of the Supreme witches. That place was ancient, it had been in existence even before my time and was a living breathing work of magic that was why it should be kept private, so I couldn't exactly under
AYLA BAILORE I was in pain all over as I stepped out of the large hall. I had barely touched my dinner, I had no appetite, not with everything that happened today. I had almost died but yet made it to the next round along with eleven other contenders, including, Lara, Maddie, and that bitch, Mia. I left the mansion, taking a stroll. I had no idea how I'd gotten so far to the garden, but somehow I was pleased. The garden was beautiful, whoever was taking care of these flowers was doing a pretty good job. I limped closer to the rose flower, plucking one, ignoring the cut from its thorns. They were beautiful flowers, yet dangerous. Just like the Estonia flower. A cold chill ran down my spine just remembering the nightmares I was trapped in. It was so strange and at the same time felt so real with Esmira there and that dark shadow that swallowed me up. Frankly, I might have been dead if Lucian had come to rescue me a second later. I felt a tightness in my chest at the reminder the K
AYLA BAILORE Lying to the Alpha King was dangerous. It was stupid and the worst mistake ever. But none of that mattered right now, not when my body was so paralyzed with shock and tears filled my eyes as I watched Lucian fight off the rogues. A fear like no other gripped my chest at the thought of something bad happening to him. With another swipe of the King's wolf claw, one of the rogue wolves fell to the ground, just as a few wolves hurried to where we were, and without hesitating, Lucian's wolf tore apart the other wolf, detaching its head from its body, bathing the air and the trees in blood.Immediately the other wolves shifted back to their human form and so did Lucian who took the shorts that were passed to him by one of his warriors.Luckily, I found the strength to get up from the ground, pinning myself to a tree, hoping with all my might I could just vanish, but that was impossible, not with Lucian's dark gaze on me.“Spread out, make a clean sweep of the entire borders.
TRISS LANNISTER It'd been hours. Long frustrating hours I locked myself in the spell room in the witches’ quarters. I have tried every spell, and gone through every book of witches. But nothing. There was no possible way to figure out what the colorless, tasteless poison was.I had extracted a few drops of whatever poison was found in Lucian's spilled drink, and the little glass bottle found in Ayla's room with my magic. It also matched what I extracted from the bodies of our warriors who were murdered. It was no doubt the same poison. But what I couldn't figure out was what poison it was exactly. There were many poisons out there, and it was almost impossible to not discover their roots or origin, especially through magic, but this one was an exception. All the more reason I did not believe Ayla had anything to do with the murders.Yes, she may have laced something in the King's drink. According to Lucian, she confessed to that much, although Lucian had kept that confession between
AYLA BAILOREMy brows crinkled. Frankly, I was completely lost, as I scrambled my brain trying to figure out who this man was. I had never met him before, and the look Lucian was giving me told me I should at least know him.“Apologies for coming late. You have the wrong culprit behind bars. Ayla Bailore, she's innocent,” He said, and my heart skipped a beat only for a moment. At least someone else also believed I didn't do it.Lucian pulled up from his chair, his eyes were dark, and not one of the emotions he had shown me earlier was on his face as he turned to face the man. I could feel the palpable tension that crackled in the air, even Lucian's men that had entered with the man were on high alert. It made me wonder just who he was.“Alpha Alexander,” Lucian almost growled out as he called the unfamiliar man's name and that was when it hit me. He was the Alpha of the Iron Claw Pack. Had Arnold sent him here? I wasn't sure what his being here meant for me. I had heard stories from W
ALEXANDER LANNISTERI always knew it. I fucking knew it. That one day that hot-blooded brother of mine was going to be the death of all of us. I was seething with rage, hell, I swear I was going to murder him myself once I saw him.I marched into the mansion, with the only seemingly reasonable brother of mine, Devoss, stalking straight to my office. It'd been weeks since I last walked these hallways. I had urgent matters to tend to so I had to travel South to meet Devoss leaving Arnold in charge of the pack. And that was a fucking mistake. Given his anger issues and unstable history, I should have known he was a fucking time bomb waiting to blow off. Unfortunately, this time he planned on taking us all with him.As I reached my office, I dismissed the two witches guarding the doors. They belonged to the coven in the Iron Claw Pack, the same coven my maternal witch grandmother led during her time.Once we stepped in, I found the fucking brother of mine pacing through the large office,
LUCIAN BLACKTHORN Blackness snuffed out my vision as I stormed out of the dungeon, marching towards my office, fuming with so much rage. No, it was worse than that. I couldn't possibly begin to identify the myriad of emotions bubbling through me, and the worse part was I hadn't gotten a fucking name from Ayla. “The Supreme heads have gathered,” Eden burst through from only the goddess knew where matching my strides as I made my way to the door of my office. “The inner court is also present. Everyone is waiting for you—” “Not now!” I didn't even spare her a glance, I was on the verge of losing it and Nero wasn't even helping matters. “Everything points to her. The poison was found in her things, the same poison that was in your drink, and the very same that had murdered our warriors—” I reached for the doorknob, losing what little was left of my control I had left, breaking it from the door. “A fucking minute, Eden!” I growled, my eyes glowing my usual golden and the emerald gree
AYLA BAILORE“I know you're a spy,” Lucian tapped his fingers against his glass before placing it down on a small table close to him. “I remember the night you snuck into my bedroom, Ayla. Anyone who dared attempt what you did would have had his head ripped out the second he was caught but with you…” He gazed intensely into my eyes before he shook his head as if deciding against something. “I never saw sense in why Esmira insisted on a Queen Selection contest, but now I do. Maybe this was the goddess way of bringing you to me. I know nothing I say would make sense now, not until you get your wolf. But Ayla, I want you to know you can trust me,” He bridged the distance between us, cupping my face in his hands. “I don't know what your relationship is with Arnold, and I know it can't be good. But I swear by the moon, I'd never hurt you. I wish you could feel the extent of what you mean to me. Arnold don't do anything without an ulterior motive, tell me what's going on. Let me help you,”
AYLA BAILORE My fingers trembled as I wrapped them around the small object. My heart was already in my throat. “Tonight?”He nodded, picking up his drink. And I wondered just how he could plot to kill the King in the middle of a party with so many wolves around. Despite the blasting music that made it impossible for any wolf's hearing to eavesdrop on our conversation, Arnold didn't strike me as a person who was so careless.“And how am I supposed to do that?” I tried to calm myself.“Simple. Empty the contents into the King's drink tonight, and—”“I mean, get that close to the King. He's always around people, and if something happens to him with me around I'd be the first suspect,”“You're forgetting I have spies in the kingdom and according to my sources, the King was in your bedroom throughout the night. That tells me you can get close enough. Remember this isn't a choice, you and Emily's life are on the line so you choose, whose life matters more,”My hands tightened and I couldn'
AYLA BAILORE I was just leaving my room for the first time since morning. After Lucian left I hadn't gone back to sleep, I couldn't even if I wanted to, not with every thought of mine wondering what Lucian had to say to me, even worse, ask of me. I needed to speak to Arnold fast. And find out how Emily was doing despite Garrick's threat. And I needed to get my head out of my thoughts and think about how I'd get into the Stone room tonight during the ball. This was my only chance. Apparently, the Stone room would be opened during the ball while the magical precious orbs we had collected from the forest would be kept safely there, so the perfect opportunity to sneak in and check if the goddess stone was there. I couldn't completely believe everything Triss said about the stone being lost, Arnold seemed to be certain that the stone was in the palace. So I had to give it a try, the stone could solve my problems with Arnold and get Emily and me successfully out of the North.I wasn't s
TRISS LANNISTER Acacia picked up her cup of tea. “You know just because it feels like an ancient matter, that doesn't mean everyone has forgotten about it. The words are still very much imprinted on the stones,”The very same words that King Eric had obsessed over. The same words had filled him with greed and hunger for powers that weren't meant for him and even now everyone was still paying the price for his cruel actions.“Everyone remembers Triss. Many are still searching. Power, and magic, are two things that corrupt even the purest of souls. Just like the words on the stones. She's like a gem they'll all seek for different reasons. So precious everyone would want to claim. That's her destiny,”“You speak in the present tense, Acacia. She's gone, just like Cora, and Brad,” I said, ignoring the whispers in my head.“Even you don't believe that,” She sipped her drink so calmly like we were talking about the weather, or deciding on what our lunch would be, and not something as serio
LUCIAN BLACKTHORNIf there was anything I never wanted was to be apart from my mate, even if it was for a second. The matebond had a way of messing with one's mind and emotions. I'd promised myself to stay away from her since I discovered many mysteries surrounding my mate and her mysterious relationship with Arnold and Garrick.I promised myself I'd keep my distance, at least until the Queen Selection was over, and she realized we were mates. That was the only way I could trust her. The Lannisters were only a fraction of the people who wanted me dead. I had plenty of enemies who were after my throne and would want me dead. I'd been able to survive this long, by surrounding myself with a small circle of people I could trust. And I wished Ayla would be one of them. She was my mate and will be my Queen. So I needed her to be on my side.Hopefully, after I returned tonight, I'd be able to get through to her and make her trust me enough to be honest with me. Tonight would determine if the
