They walked through the rest of the night. At sunrise, the carts started up with only a few issues which Ellie and Weylin were quick to fix. The carts rolled forward at a man's pace as they followed the road through the flat desert.

By the time nightfall hit, another city lay on the horizon. This one looked much smaller than the last, but Jimmy kept them still when the carts ran out of power.

"Hybrid! Smart-girl!" Jimmy beckoned.

Alex slid out of the cart. She joined him and Ellie at the front of the caravan.

"What do you think?" He asked. "Should we go around or through?"

Ellie tapped her lips as she thought. "This is a pretty small town. There are no other major roads straight through it. On the other side is a bunch of mountains. I would recommend the straight approach."

"Hybrid, risk assessment?" Jimmy asked.

Alex looked through her scope and scouted the town ahead. "Looks dead." She turned around to look at the surrounding hills and the smooth desert behind them. I'd say mo

"Go talk to her," Jimmy said."But she already hates me. This is just going to make it worse," Alex said. "I should just wait until I know for sure."Jimmy grabbed her shoulders from behind and propelled her towards Cart Two. "It's going to be fine. Just have a nice chat with her. Besides, if you wait any longer you'll get even skinnier."Alex grumbled a few curse words as he pushed her along. It had been two days since the mountain pass. They had just stopped on the edge of the next city. They planned to eat a meal then pass through this one with guns drawn just in case it was inhabited.Brooke turned towards them as they approached. Her hazel eyes gleamed golden in the fading sunlight. Her smile tightened as she watched Jimmy pushing Alex."Can I help you?" Brooke asked."The hybrid would like to ask you a medical question," Jimmy said.Brooke bit the inside of her cheek as she waited.Alex spun on him. "Yes, it's a personal medical question, so you should go."Jimmy eyed he

Tom sat in the cart as it climbed the hills. It was supposed to take only a day if they looked at it distance-wise, but the mountains were too steep to push the carts and make much progress. The first night they pushed through for a while, but gave up and just made camp. It looked like it would be another two days of travel just to get to the next city.Ellie and Weylin spent each morning checking the motors. They had already lost one and the cart had to be towed by two others until Ellie was able to repair it. Luckily, she did get it fixed, but it was only a matter of time before they lost one for good. He hoped they would get back to the cities soon, not because it was safer, but because they held more materials to salvage.Brooke snaked her arms around his waist. "How's it going?" She asked, her breath tickling his ear."It's the same. Just more mountains and more wind turbines. Not much has changed yet.""Aren't you getting bored of this? It's always the same. Sit here, watch f

Alex sat in exile as Cart One rolled along its path. They left the mountains behind and were well on their way to the next big city. Jimmy walked ahead of the cart, occasionally looking through his scope at the dark landscape that morphed from mountains and windmills to desert and solar towers. The darkness around them brought a cool night breeze from the west that occasionally blew with strong gusts, then settled down. The wind sent chills right through her. Alex drew the blanket she was wrapped in around her tight.Jimmy held up a fist. It took a moment for the people pushing the carts to notice, but eventually, the whole caravan rolled to a stop."Twenty minutes. I need five volunteers," Jimmy shouted.Alex pulled free from the blanket then crawled out of the cart.Jimmy approached her. "Not you. You stay here.""What is it? What if you need my firepower?"Jimmy reached in the cart and pulled another blanket out. "I'm sure it's nothing. Just some weird movement. Maybe a bit of

They walked through the green grasslands dotted with solar towers, sunflowers, and blackberry vines. The sun was just setting over the mountains in the distance. The sky was seeping dark pinks and purples that lit up the entire sky. Tom had never seen anything so beautiful and majestic in his entire life.Brooke had been trying to abscond with him secretly for the last few nights, but with the wide-open space, there really was nowhere to hide. The best he had been able to manage was some long kisses behind the cart, but it was never long before someone interrupted them. He could see Brooke getting more frustrated. She was starting to get that look in her eyes. He knew that whatever she was cooking up was going to be disastrous for him.He finished filling the pot from the water barrel in the back of the cart and headed back over to the chemical heater at one of the circles. Brooke avoided his gaze but he saw her smiling wickedly. Whatever she had planned she was going to do it soon.

The carts rolled along at their own accord under the cloudy sky. The green grass faded into a suburban area around them and the roads grew more complicated. Ellie consulted her map and directed them along the straightest path north they could find. The group fell tight together and a hush fell over the caravan. So far, this was the biggest city they had traveled through since the one with the white-eyed men.The carts climbed up and over a mountainous pass. Finally, in the distance among the complicated crumbling overpasses, Tom saw the beginnings of skyscrapers. A large river ran through the city with various bridges spanned the gap. He wondered which one would be the best.He kissed Brooke on the forehead as she slept then jumped out of the cart. He caught up to Cart One and matched its pace. Jimmy sat at the front beneath a mountain of blankets. Alex's delicate features looked strained as she slept in his arms."Jimmy," Tom said loud enough to wake him, but not so loud as to both

The carts pulled on for the rest of the day while they crawled up and down the sloping road along the river. Tom was entranced by the grass blades rippled like ocean waves in the wind. Short sunflowers dotted the landscape and even small shrubs started growing. Blackberry bushes with prickly vines and pointed leaves sprouted up everywhere around them. The sun sank over the mountains, casting its dazzling sunset yet again, but this time the clouds looked heavy and dark. They broke for another meal. Tom joined his usual circle. He set a burner simmering a pot of tomato pasta."How's she doing?" Tom asked as he sat down next to Jimmy.Alex lay in his lap covered in blankets. Dark circles were heavy under her eyes. She was barely conscious as Jimmy tried to coax a scoop of mashed potatoes down her throat from an open MRE pouch. She swallowed them so painfully slowly it made it hard for Tom to watch.Jimmy shook his head. "Not well, she's barely been awake for the last two days.""How

Tom and Jimmy stood staring at the metal bridge."What do you think?" Jimmy asked."I think that someone did this on purpose," Tom said. The metal bridge ahead of them was the color of rust beneath the poking vines covering it. Patches of road had fallen through, but the center metal frame arching over the structure was still intact.Jimmy turned. "Smart kids, come here."Ellie and Weylin appeared."Will the carts make it?" Jimmy asked."We can go check." Ellie grabbed Weylin's arm and tugged him along after her.Jimmy nodded to two guards. They followed after them as Ellie and Weylin walked down the bridge.Tom watched them disappeared behind the vines before he turned to Jimmy again. "What are we going to do if we can't bring the carts?"Jimmy swung his gaze back to the caravan. "I guess carry what we can and come back for it later. It's only a little more than a day away.""Should we just bring food? Will we have enough fresh water?" Tom asked, not expecting an answer."

Tom knocked on the door to the new medical wing before entering. Brooke shot him a smile as she organized medicines in a cabinet. He strode up behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her neck."I missed you," he whispered in her ear."You were only gone for three days." She turned toward him and looked up at him with her golden hazel eyes."It was a really long three days.""Did you get the carts?"He nodded. "They are getting unpacked as we speak. How is she?""Ellie has her hooked up to some brain monitor stuff. She says that without Jack's input, it's hard to tell what is really going on. So pretty much, we still don't know anything.""How's the baby?"Brooke looked surprised and then looked at Alex. "Oh, fine. Still too early to tell the sex, but it seems healthy enough.""You're keeping something from me."Brooke looked away and smiled. "Maybe."He pulled her closer and kissed her ear. "What is it?""It's too soon to be sure.""You can still tell me."Bro

Jack woke with a splitting headache. The white tile ceiling above him looked like that of a hospital room. He gave an inward sigh. The last time had been three months. He wondered how long it had been this time. His fingers felt tight and his hand cramped. He looked over to see they were taped together with someone else's hand. He blinked the sleep from his eyes. As his vision cleared, he saw Alex lying on the cot next to him. Their tactical suits had been removed but the tech suit remained. Both of them were layered in blankets strapped to wires. He racked his brain and remembered the nova they had set off. The third one in a row must have taken its toll.He sent heat into Alex's hand. Her eyes blinked opened. She pulled at her taped hand and then used her free hand to rub her eyes. She looked around. "What's going on?""Wish I knew," Jack answered. She quirked a smile, then pushed the covers back. "It's kind of hot in here, isn't it?""Is it? I can't really tell." Jack sat up, l

The rumbling throughout the Sanctuary stilled as the battle above drew silent. Tom turned to Jimmy. Jimmy nodded and the team climbed to the Surface. After the light, the tunnel, and the door, they emptied out onto the street. Their men looked tired but had smiles on their faces. The team leaders directed them on searches to find any survivors, whether they were friend or foe."Has anyone seen Alex?" Jimmy shouted.Several people shook their heads.Jimmy turned to his team. "Let's spread out. Knowing them, they'll be up somewhere high."The team diverged. Tom searched on his own, always keeping at least his pistol at the ready. The sun slipped over the horizon casting the buildings in a deep twilight glow. Tom climbed the stairs on several buildings to the top but didn't find anything except dead bodies and empty bullet casings. After five buildings, the night settled in. The tanks disappeared back down into the tunnel. Jimmy recruited more people to help search. Armor-clad bodies

Someone was calling his name. At least he thought. There it was again. Tom blinked. The room was black and hazy."Tom?" Jimmy's face loomed above him."What happened?""A fireman got to you. Are you alright?"Tom wiggled his fingers. He could feel the skin pulling across his arm as he moved. "I'll be okay, just a few blisters." He pushed back to his feet, climbing up over the top of the dead Alphas.Their power suit clad soldiers surrounded the room with guns drawn. Bullets covered the floor along with bodies of the Alphas and a few of his team members. His stomach twisted at the loss of good men.Jimmy put a hand on the shoulder of his power armor. "They died saving us. We need to get moving. We've gotten ten so far. We'll finish a sweep and then start clearing the level below."Tom nodded. "Let's go."Jimmy led the way. His team fell in behind him as they jogged down the streets checking building to building. The battle had tightened in around the Sanctuary. The noise of it s

The three of them sat dressed in black tactical gear layered over Alpha tech suits. Alex's dirty face watched Jack as he tightened down the straps on her suit."We stick together, okay. No running off and playing hero on your own," Jack warned. He looked at Lexi while he said it."I thought you were going to make me stay in the pod," Lexi said."I would but it won't be safe there.""I don't think it will be any safer with us," Alex said in a low tone.Jack turned to Alex. "At least we will be able to keep an eye on her. She tends to always find trouble when I tell her to stay put."Alex's eyes flashed to Lexi. "Don't I know it."Lexi rolled her eyes. "If it weren't for me, you guys wouldn't be together, or maybe you'd even be dead.""Watch your tone young lady," Alex warned.Lexi grinned. "I know you're trying to be all tough, but it's really good to hear you say that." She stepped forward and gave Alex a hug.Alex melted. She laid her head against Lexi's cheek. "You're so ta

Jack reached over and touched Alex's shoulder. "Wake up, love."Alex squeezed her eyes shut and rubbed at them with the back of her hands smearing the soot across her face. "How long has it been?" She looked over at Lexi sleeping in a reclined chair. He reached his hand out and wiped at a smudge with his thumb. It only made it worse but she smiled at the touch. "About six hours," he said."You shouldn't have let me sleep so long. You need rest, too.""I got a few hours. Don't worry so much."Alex looked out the pod screen. "I can't help it. I'm finally free of Henry's terror, but now I feel like we're on the verge of losing it all."Jack's mouth drew down in a frown. "It's not going to be pretty. Ellie messaged me before we left her range. Looks like the Alphas are ahead of us by a few hours. When we get there, we will have to fight through them to get to the base."Alex nodded. "Did you see much of it when you visited? It's huge.""No, I only really had one thing on my mind at

Tom sat at the table drumming his fingers. "Does anyone actually know how to work these computers other than Ellie?"The five people working the screen didn't look up.Jimmy crossed his arms over his chest. "Just give them time.""General, the ships are in place.""Good," Janice said, leaning over the tech's workstation. "Anyone have a status on the Alphas?""They're closing in. The ships are taking them out now.""It looks like they are floating topside. Orders?""There's nothing the ships can do up there. Tell them to concentrate on as many darts as they can. Send runners topside and tell them to prepare." Janice turned to Jimmy and Tom. "That's your cue. Do your best."Tom saluted and Jimmy nodded. They turned out into the hall. Their teams waited for them, strapped with weapons and power armor. Tom donned the power armor helmet, gave a nod to Jimmy, and led his team away.As they walked down the halls, they passed locked doors to apartments. Their people, the ones that wer

They were going to make it. Somehow, they were going to make it. He tilted his face down and pressed his lips to hers. The liquid electricity filled him. He could feel the energy building in them. He held on to it as he kissed her. She parted her soft lips and he slid his tongue inside. Her tongue moved along his, soft, slow, and passionate. He pressed her against him, gathering the energy they created. He could feel the energy sparkling on his fingertips, asking to be released. He held it back until they vibrated. Finally, he let it go.The white-hot fire burst from them. In his mind, he could feel it like an extra sense. He coated the stadium with it. He could tell it what to touch and what not to. Alex stood locked in a small empty room the size of a utility closet. The walls lay bare except for the light switch. She flicked at the walls, but the screens were disabled and didn't respond. She paced back and forth, rubbing the Vice at her neck. Her bare feet didn't make a sound as they worked the white tile of the floor. She had to figure a way out of here. She needed to find Brooke and Tom. They had to be free. They were only here because of her. This was her problem, her world, not theirs. She flicked her palm open and drew a fireball. Her insides were still hot, but the pull of energy from just one fireball was tremendous. The amount of focus it took to wield it was much harder than it had been when she was pregnant.Alex pressed her ear to the door. Two heartbeats from the other side. She had no weapons other than the fire. She may be able to take out one Alpha, but not two. She sighed, then moved to another wall. There was no sound coming from that side. She tapped on it. S
