Despite how tired he was Xavier couldn’t get any rest. He mentally berated himself for failing to protect her. She slept against him without stirring, his chest constricted anytime her remembered the amount of pain she had been through, the train was gradually slowing down, he gently placed her on the floor and opened the door. The sun was just beginning to rise. He quickly gathered their bags and possessions then reluctantly tapped Vanessa. She looked at peace while sleeping
“What happened?” Vanessa asked“We’re at our stop. We need to get down and I’ll carry you the rest of the way.”She nodded and Xavier helped her to her feet, the train screeched as it stopped and Xavier jumped down the Vanessa followed. Xavier moved towards her to carry her but she pushed him away.“Just because I cried yesterday doesn’t mean I need your help.”“That’s not why am offering to carry you.”“Then why and don’t say it’s because you know am tired.”Xavier looked away without responding.“Since you don’t have an answer I suggest we start walking.”Xavier led the way and Vanessa moved slowly behind him, they walked through paved road filled with mud and puddles. The amount of houses lining the road gradually increased as they progressed. Vanessa tried to walk as fast as she could so she won’t slow them down but she could feel pain everywhere. Even her eyes felt too heavy to guide her through the thick dew and puddles. Her wounds had healed completely but they still hurt like hell, and the more she moved the more it felt like the bullets were re-entering her. Xavier slowed down when he noticed her lagging behind, if only she had just listened to him. She wavered in her steps, the pain in her back and kept spreading, she could not understand why her body hurt so much, maybe it was because she hadn’t eaten in days.Vanessa tripped on her foot and Xavier quickly stretched his hand to steady her, she was about to flinch away from his touch. She didn’t need his pity.“You don’t have to be so stubborn. I don’t care about what you feel I would’ve done same for anyone who was shot with two bullets.”He crouched lower in front of her and Vanessa reluctantly climbed his back. He wrapped his hands around her legs and she placed her hands around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder.“If you’re tired you can drop me.”“We’re almost there.”Xavier kept walking, the thick morning dew was gradually dispersing and the street was growing populated with people rushing to work, the amount of drunks lying around was dwindling. Xavier stopped in front of a small gate covered with over grown vines, he could see the house behind the gate clearly. Memories flooded his vision, he pushed them away. He looked at Vanessa’s face, she seemed to be drowsy her fatigue radiated from her, she merely looked at him and looked back at the gate in front of them.He pushed the gate and entered the compound. There were flowers of different shapes and colours and a peach blossom tree a swing was attached to it. The path to the house was paved with cobblestones and both sides of the path were lined with dandelions and morning glories.Xavier made his way to the door and knocked, rays of sun were beginning to trickle through the clouds, footsteps echoed from inside the house and seemed to stop in front of the door. Keys jingled, Xavier’s grip on Vanessa’s legs increased, Vanessa quickly glanced at him.An old lady opened the door slowly and stared back at them, she was short and chubby with a healthy stature, the hair on her head was totally white with age. She glanced from Vanessa’s face to Xavier’s and her features softened a bit.“Xavier, I didn’t expect to see you here.” She smiled at him“Nana I came to see you.”“You came to see me with a nearly unconscious girl on your back?” she retortsXavier remained silent, she looks at him and noticed the blood staining their clothes then after a while she sighs and her shoulders slackened. Nana opened the door wider and gestured for them to come in. After entering Xavier kicked the door shut, Vanessa is hit with the warmth of the house and the scent of toast. She unconsciously burrows into XavierXavier looked around the living room and smiles in familiarity, he sees the same couches he and his siblings once jumped on and some of their terrible paintings and drawings framed at the mantle and the scorch mark he implanted on the tea table. He lowers Vanessa to her feet and doesn’t let go till she’s steady.“Take her to your room so she can get cleaned and get her clothes from your parent’s room.” Nana instructed Xavier while flipping pancakes in the kitchen. Xavier nodded He pulled Vanessa’s hand gently and took her up the stairs, they stopped at the first floor and turned right. A door at the end of the corridor was open letting in all the sunshine. The white walls were coloured with paintings of flowers. Xavier turned the knob of the second door and opened the door for Vanessa.“There’s running water in the bathroom and towel in the first drawer. I’m going to get something for you to change into.”Xavier closed the door, Vanessa relished the short silence and solitude, she crashed onto a nearby chair closed her eyes. She stood up opened the first drawer and pulled out a soft white towel and made her way to the bathroomXavier walks into his parent’s room and headed for his mother’s closet. This room was the second largest in the house, the balcony doors were open letting in light and breeze, the curtains swayed in the wind. As he went through the closet for something that would fit Vanessa he saw the dress. It was a white cottage dress with long puffed sleeves. He touched it like he was scared of it, he couldn’t help but imagine what Vanessa would look like in the dress. He smiled at the thought, white was too delicate a colour for her.He could remember that day too clearly, it was one of those memories that would never fade over time. Nana had been teaching him earlier how to control his feelings and thus have a better grip on his powers.Shortly after that he was in an argument with his mother, in his anger he screamed and grabbed her hand. She had looked at him so lovingly and as he was about to storm off he watched his mother slump to the ground. He rushed to her but she tried to hide the woun
After the accident with his mother he withdrew from everyone, particularly her because she always wanted him to use his powers. To at least have some sort of control over them, he had shut down and focused more on building himself physically, but she knew physical strength wouldn’t be enough to satiate him. Nana sighed, she knew he would learn eventually. Hopefully when it’s not too late“Go and check on her. Take a shower then come down for breakfast.” Nana instructed him. Xavier wiped his hands on a towel and went up the stairs. He stopped in front of the door and knocked. There was no answer. He knocked again, a little louder in case she was still in the bathroom and she couldn’t hear. He was met with silence. His heart beat impulsively quickened, he couldn’t help worrying if something had happened to her. Xavier opened the door, he raced to the bathroom and searched frantically. He left the bathroom, and as he was about to call her name he noticed her sleeping on a chair. She had
GLOWING HANDSThe air was heavy with rain from earlier and the night was silent, almost as though it was waiting. The tents flapped gently with the sway of the wind, the footsteps and their voices of men echoed in the night air. Horses quietly nuzzled on some grass while men filled their jugs with water from the clear stream.“Sir, we have her in your tent.”Xavier opened his eyes and accessed his right hand, Maxwell. He eyed the long bleeding gash across his cheek and arched a brow.“She was a little bit unwilling to cooperate.” He explainedXavier nodded standing and followed Maxwell’s lead. They both stopped in front of a tent, two men standing guard bowed in reverence. Xavier nodded in acknowledgment; Maxwell raised the flap of the tent and with his other hand stretched a lantern.“We had to sedate her but she should be awake soon.” He informedXavier walked inside and set the lantern on the table; he pulled a chair to the centre of the room and quietly watched the sleeping form c
“Keep quiet, I think someone is following us.” he interrupted and whispered Vanessa looked around, she couldn’t make anything out in the darkness, and then she saw a man raise a bow and arrow. She tapped his shoulder anxiously “We need to move quickly.”He held her hand and steered them as arrows came flying one nearly missing Xavier’s head. The arrows temporarily stopped and they were quickly followed by footsteps.Xavier listened carefully, they were just three. It would be easy. He pinned her to a tree“Do not move, I won’t take too long.” She rolled her eyes and scoffed. He looked at her more sternly and she shrugged and nodded. He ran in the direction of the oncoming men. She watched his accurate movements, the three of them circled him and attacked. He ducked when a punch came, and moved sideways to avoid the jab of a knife. Xavier pulled out his sword and slit a throat. He wiped some blood from his face, he faced the remaining two.Vanessa sat in the distance watching, he had
POISON Xavier opened his eyes. It was still dark but he could tell it was morning already. He reached under the blanket to touch his wound but it was gone, almost like it was never there. He smiled at her and helped her lie down and cover her body properly.“Who knew you were capable of a smile.” “I’ll keep watch” he respondedVanessa nods closing her eyes.Vanessa looked directly at the blue sky as Xavier walk around her gathering things. The sun was about to set, Xavier moved quickly so they could get to the stream before dark. She stirred in his arms and moved in closer, the weather was getting chilly. The stream sparkled in the light of the setting sun. Xavier placed her gently on the ground and covered her. The water looked inviting, but he couldn’t leave her alone. He started searching for fire wood nearby.Vanessa rushed to her feet and hurried to the bush nearby and vomited, she felt her hair move as Xavier held it for her, as she turned to say thank you bile rushed up her throat and she quickly turned away and kept vomiting fruit and blood. Her stomach was soon empty, Xavier stretched out a can of water to her and left.Vanessa watched his feet as they moved away, she lifted the can to her mouth, moved the water about in her mouth and spat it out. She did this twice and poured some of the water in her palm and washed her face. She crawled her way back to where she was lying down and rested her back against a tr
THE TRAINThe air smelled like rain and the wind had picked up speed. After much struggle Xavier had managed to kill a rabbit. He slowly made his way back to their camp.A piercing scream filled the night air and Xavier raced back to their camp leaving the rabbit he caught on the floor.Vanessa struggled to think. Her hands were tied behind her also her feet and Lord Fletcher had been talking nonstop which only added to her annoyance. Where was Xavier when she finally needed him? She was too weak from the effects of the poison she had earlier ingested. Wasn’t this guy even tired of chasing her? What was wrong with taking a break? A fat rain drop landed on her cheek, she shivered in the cold. Xavier quietly accessed the situation, charging in won’t be any good. Lord Fletcher looked like he was alone but he knew someone like him wouldn’t go anywhere without his guards, the must be waiting for him to show up. A TOWNVanessa laid down trying to fill her lungs with air, the baggage car smelled damp and heavy but she didn’t mind. Every part of her body ached unforgivingly. Xavier lay not too far from he was staring at the ceiling, his chest rising and falling with every breath he took. Vanessa turned and instantly remembered the bullets still lodged in her, the thought of having to fish them out made her shut her eyes to build up strength for the oncoming pain. She got a lighter and Xavier’s dagger and put the dagger on the flame. The bullets wounds had already fully healed. She rested her back on a crate and flexed her right leg, Xavier stretched out his hand and collected the lighter from her. Vanessa placed the hot blade against her skin and it seemed to go through easily, she bite her tongue and some sounds escaped her mouth as she groaned in agony, blood ran down her leg as she made an incision at the back of her right thigh large enough for her to stick about two fingers.
