Lily’s POV
"Lilly! Lilly! Wake up, you log of wood!" Annabella’s shrill voice pierced through my ears as she screamed beside me.
I groaned, reluctant to leave the comfort of sleep, but when I opened my eyes, I saw Anastasia standing at the door, arms crossed with an unimpressed expression. Of course, the twins. They made my mornings a living nightmare, and today was no exception.
"You’re in so much trouble," Annabella sneered, her lips curling in disgust. "Mum told you to wake up earlier, and it’s already 6:30 a.m. Yet, here you are, still sleeping like some useless princess."
I sighed, pushing myself up from the bed and walking past them without a word. There was no point in arguing—I had learned that the hard way.
It’s been eleven years—eleven whole f*cking years—since I was washed up by the sea and found by a kind farmer who took me in. But instead of the life I hoped for, he died, leaving me with his wife, who has done nothing but turn my life into a living hell alongside her children.
Heading straight to the kitchen, I stopped in my tracks when I saw Vivian washing the dishes.
Out of my three stepsisters, Vivian was the only one who showed me kindness. She was the only reason I hadn’t run away from this miserable life. Annabella and Anastasia, along with their mother, had made it their mission to make my life unbearable.
"Viv, what are you doing?" I asked, my voice laced with concern.
Vivian glanced at me and smiled softly. "I’m helping you with the dishes. I know you barely slept last night after doing those brats’ assignments."
Panic surged through me. "Viv, your mum is going to kill me if she sees you doing this."
"But I want to help," she insisted.
I appreciated her kindness, but I couldn’t let her get involved in my punishment. Shaking my head, I spoke gently, "Thank you, Viv, but you should go get ready for school, okay?"
Before she could respond, a chilling voice echoed through the kitchen, making my body freeze in place.
"What is going on here?"
My heart pounded. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. I was dead meat.
"Nothing, Mother," I said quickly, keeping my head down to avoid her wrath. "I was just scolding Vivian for washing the dishes. That’s my job."
Her heels clicked against the floor as she approached me. "And what did I say about letting my little princess do your work for you?"
I braced myself. This wasn’t going to end well.
"You said I would be punished," I muttered, a sigh escaping my lips.
What she did next was beyond what I expected—without hesitation, she grabbed the bucket of filthy water and dumped it over me.
I gasped as the cold, grimy liquid drenched my clothes, the foul stench clinging to my skin. Behind me, the twins burst into laughter, their cruel amusement echoing through the kitchen.
"Mum! How could you?" Vivian’s voice cracked with anger and disbelief. "I was the one who decided to wash those dishes—she doesn’t deserve this!"
"Shut your mouth and head to your room, now!" Jane snapped, her sharp tone leaving no room for argument.
Vivian’s hands clenched into fists. "I wish you weren’t my mum," she spat, tears shining in her eyes. "If Dad were still alive, you know you wouldn’t be doing this to her!"
Jane’s lips curled into a smirk. "Well, sorry to burst your bubble, sweetie, but your father is dead. And dead men don’t talk. Now, to your room."
I stood there, staring at my dripping shoes, my body stiff as I braced for what was next.
"As for you, daughter of Jezebel," Jane sneered, turning her hateful gaze back to me, "you are to scrub my floors until they shine. In fact, when I get back, I want to see my reflection on them."
Her eyes narrowed as she stepped closer. "You will wash the dishes, do the laundry, cook, and still make it to work. And you better be fast about it—if you get fired for being late, I’ll make sure you don’t have a roof over your head. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, Mum," I whispered.
"Good." She turned to her daughters, who were still grinning. "Girls, let’s leave her to her work."
"But Mum, aren’t you forgetting something?" The twins spoke in unison, mischief glinting in their eyes.
"What? I’m sure I gave her all the punishment she deserves," Jane said, raising a brow.
"No, Mum, not the punishment," Annabella smirked. "Lilly’s supposed to receive her salary today."
Oh no. My stomach dropped.
Jane’s eyes lit up with realization. "Ah, yes. I nearly forgot. You know the drill, Lilly—I don’t want to have to look for a single note. Hand it all over when you get home."
She turned toward the door but paused. "Oh, and don’t touch my food. You can starve for today. Or better yet, steal—since that’s the only way you’ll eat. Now, come along, girls, or you’ll be late for school."
I wiped my tears quickly, forcing myself to move. I had no time to cry.
I washed the dishes first, preparing their breakfast while still soaking in dirty water. Then, I grabbed a mop and scrubbed the floors. My life had been this miserable since my foster father died, leaving me trapped with his cruel wife and daughters—except for Vivian. She was the only light in this darkness.
Once the house fell silent and I was sure they were gone, I cleared the dining table before moving on to the bedrooms. Cleaning my room was quick—it was barely bigger than a closet—but the twins’ rooms took ages. They changed clothes at least five times a day, leaving mountains of laundry behind.
By the time I was done, exhaustion weighed on me. But I had no choice—I had to get to work.
Jane had forbidden me from going to school right after my father’s death. Instead, she turned me into her daughters’ personal servant. I endured everything because of one small hope: that Michael would come back for me.
But it had been eleven years. And I was getting tired.
At the Diner
"Lilly, you look terrible," May said the moment I walked in.
I rolled my eyes. "I know. You don’t have to state the obvious," I muttered, still damp from my earlier humiliation.
"Take it easy, baby girl," she said with a smirk. "I’m not your problem. You’re the one letting them treat you like sh*t."
I sighed, too drained to argue.
"Anyway, see you tomorrow. My shift’s over." She tossed her apron at me before strolling out.
I checked her name off the list, replacing it with mine. Then, forcing a smile, I started serving customers.
"I’d like to order four burgers and four cups of coffee," a man said.
"How would you like the coffee?" I asked, keeping my fake cheer intact.
"Two black, two with milk."
The scent of food filled the air, making my stomach twist painfully. I hadn’t eaten all day. Hours passed, and my hunger only worsened. I could barely stand.
When I couldn’t take it anymore, I grabbed a burger, stuffing it into my mouth as if my life depended on it. And at that moment, it felt like it did.
The relief was instant—until a cold realization hit me.
I had forgotten about the security camera sitting right in front of me.
Panic surged through me. My boss saw everything.
I was completely doomed.
"You weren't supposed to eat from the stand, and even if you do, you need to pay for it.""I will pay for it; I just need to wait until I receive my money, and then I will pay.""Are you trying to get me sacked? If you were going to eat the burger, you were supposed to pay," Sam said, sounding like I stole the burger."I told you I would pay. I just need to get my money, and I will.""Get your money? When I'm sacked?" she asked with so much anger in her eyes. She was causing a scene as people started taking an interest in our conversation."I will pay for the burger; there is no need to be all aggressive." I looked up to see a guy standing in front of me.He handed his credit card to Sam, which she took and glared at him. I didn't know what to say; before I could say thank you to the guy, he was gone.“You are so d*mn lucky,” Sam said as she brushed past me.I was trying as much as possible to hold back my anger. The rest of the day went in a rather terrible direction for me.Immediat
I walked home feeling more devastated than I was this morning. I walked inside only to find the house that I left so clean and sparkling in a total mess.I was trying to pretend like I didn't see a thing and headed to my room for a quick nap, but Annabella and Anastasia decided to approach me.“Hope your salary is complete, or you better start packing because once Mum returns, you are going to hand over that money.”“Why should I do that?” I am done condoning all this nonsense. I walked closer to both of them because I really needed an answer.“Did you just talk back to me?” Anastasia asked.“Yes, I just did. So what are you going to do about it?” I asked, approaching her, and she backed away immediately, her face looking terrified.“Gosh, I never knew you had grown so many wings." Annabella stepped in to defend her sister, but I was so done with them.I didn't hesitate as I grabbed a handful of their hair and dragged them towards the kitchen as they screamed.“Who messed up my kitche
“So, what is your business proposal?” I asked, impatient with him."We need to meet my boss,” he simply stated.“You have a boss?”“Yes, he sent me to you.”“Why didn't you bother telling me that beforehand?”“Because I didn't think it mattered."He didn't think telling me about his boss mattered. Is he kidding me right now?"Well, everything matters to me. I just quit my job, and I no longer have a home because of you."“Why is that my fault?” he asked, lifting his cup of coffee to take a sip.“You don't know what I have put on the line because of your offer, so please don't leave out any details again,” I said, not knowing I was sounding like a boss scolding his employee."Yes, ma'am, copy that,” he replied. I didn't mean to sound that way, but I couldn't help it.“So, where can I meet your boss, and who is he?”“I think you know him already; he is the world-famous lawyer in Oak City.”“The world-famous lawyer, as in Eric Sarton?"“Yes.”“Is your boss?” I asked, my mouth dropping wi
“Thank you, Mr. Sarton,” I said as I shook his extended hand.“Please call me Eric, and I hope you don't mind me calling you by your name.”“No, I don't mind,” I said, realizing I was still holding his hand. I withdrew mine and sat down."Okay, let's get down to business. I am fully aware of what has happened to your family so far,” he said.“How did you get to know who I am and how to find me?” I asked, feeling suspicious.“I don't know if you are aware, but your family’s case still remains one of the uncracked cases. I am interested in it because I know I can help you solve it.”“How?”"I am a lawyer, and trust me, I know who killed your parents.”“What do you mean by that?”“The people who killed your parents are also my enemies.”“Then why don't you just finish them off? What do I have to do with this?” I wanted to know his intentions."I'm not a bad person, Miss Lillian Anthony,” he said, using my full name.“I suggest you forget about our benefit and think about yours; I mean, h
For the rest of the day, Alex took me out to change my wardrobe, as he said. We went to the salon to get my hair done. From there, we went to the manicure and pedicure spa, then to the shopping mall. Alex took his time letting me get a lot of clothes, shoes, and jewelry.I got tired at some point and couldn't walk anymore. I had to make Alex stop so we could get lunch.“While we are here, I want you to know that a little photoshoot will be done tomorrow. You will be having dinner with Eric at one of his best restaurants in town. I will be there to take a few photos. On Friday, you will be attending a party with him.”All this was getting me annoyed. I mean, why wouldn't he let me eat? I had been walking around all day trying to make myself the perfect girl for Eric Sarton.“Are you even paying attention to any of the things I have been saying so far?""No, Alex, because you won't let me eat and think straight. Let me enjoy my food, then I will listen to you forever if I have to.”“I wo
When we got back, I was so tired that I didn't even bother to unpack the shopping bags. I just took a bath and went to sleep.I woke up the next morning feeling better, though my legs were sore from standing and walking all day. When I heard a tap on the door, I rushed towards it, thinking it was Alex, but I saw an elderly woman with a tray of food. It was smoked salmon and avocado toast. I took the food from her and thanked her.“Alex wanted me to inform you that your hairdresser and makeup artist will be here to help you get dressed for the day.”“Wait, I mean, how can I address you?” I asked when I couldn't think of a name for her. She wasn't dressed like a chef or a worker.“Call me Anna; everyone around here calls me by my name,” she said with a smile.“Thank you, Anna, for sharing some of your food with me.”“Nah, I didn't do anything; I just followed the young master's order.”“You mean Eric?”“Yes.”“Okay, but thank you for bringing it all the way up here.”“You are welcome."
“What happened?” Alex asked when he saw me walk in. I wasn’t really focused on that question because my foot was hurting like hell.“I don’t know; why don’t you ask Eric?” I simply replied.“You both were supposed to be a couple in love; now the news says you’re just a client throwing yourself at him.”Alex sighed in frustration before showing me the news on his laptop. Many photos of Eric and me were seen with different captions backing them. Some said I was just a client throwing myself at him; others said that I am his cousin, and others think I am likely to be his sister.“Are you kidding me?”“No one is kidding around, Lilly; you guys were supposed to be a couple, not siblings.”He ran his hands through his hair, and I saw how frustrated he was.“I really don’t know why you are blaming me for this. If this was a blind date, I swear I wouldn’t want to see Eric again.”“Why not?”“Because he sucks. Eric doesn’t know the first thing about dating or relationships, and neither do I. T
“Oh my God, you look beautiful, Lilly.”“I know, all thanks to you. Thanks, Jess, for making me look irresistible.”“You are welcome, sweetie.”Jess and I were getting pretty close. As for Eric, I haven't seen him since our date. All I was told was to meet up at his office.I sighed, feeling like I was the only one making this work, but I didn't really blame him. After all, this game will benefit me more than anyone else. I looked at myself one more time in the mirror before grabbing my handbag.Let's go make this night a success for me. I'll just think of everything as a nightmare that I will wake up from.I heard a knock on the door before Alex opened it and walked in."Wow, Jess, once again, I am very proud of you,” Alex said, but Jess glared at him.“I am not doing this for you, so keep your compliment."“You don't have to be rude; all you have to say is thank you."I watched as they both fought with their words while shooting daggers at each other with their eyes.“How long have
“Lily, is not going to be easy,” Jess said, but that was not what I wanted to hear.“It has never been easy, Jess, and I’m done waiting around for some miracle when we can end this. What I need right now is everyone’s support. With you, Alex, and Eric, I believe I can do it,” I said, taking her hands in mine. I needed her to see how much I wanted to get this done.“Lily, I believe you can do this, but we don’t have much time. We need to make it back to Terranovae before Eric’s second transformation. I spoke to Eric’s dragon side, and it wants us to find the heart before the second transformation, or both the dragon and Eric will be lost. If that happens, a beast shall be born. It doesn’t matter if Eric or the dragon is in control—they will both go wild because they’ve been together since birth,” Alex said, leaving Jess and me staring at him.“Okay, I’ll help you, but first, I need to heal myself. I can’t help you if I’m this weak,” Jess said, and in that moment, all I wanted was to hu
Just as I suspected, Lily was still sitting in the exact spot she had been when I left earlier. But now, she looked far worse—her face blotchy and swollen, as though she'd been crying the entire time.Eric stood silently at the doorway, his eyes fixed on her. He looked utterly heartbroken, his pain written plainly across his face as he watched Lily in her despair. She hadn’t noticed our presence yet, lost in the dark cloud of her thoughts. And then, her head lifted, her glassy eyes locking with mine for a brief moment before shifting to Eric. Recognition flared in her gaze, and in the next heartbeat, she flew into his arms.Understanding they needed this moment, I stepped out of the room, giving them the space they so desperately needed. I headed toward the sitting room in search of Jess. When I walked in, I found her curled up on the couch, her legs hugged tightly to her chest. Even in sleep, exhaustion clung to her like a heavy weight, her face taut with tension. The sight of her vu
I watched as an enraged roar tore from the dragon’s mouth, reverberating through the water like a violent storm. His massive body shifted with a rippling motion, scales shimmering ominously from his head down to his long, spiked tail. In one swift movement, he swung the deadly appendage toward me.The sharp, menacing spikes aimed my way forced me to dart aside, narrowly avoiding his weapon. He charged at me with terrifying speed as I swam deeper into the sea, frantically searching for a place to hide. My gaze landed on a large rock near the ocean floor, and I surged toward it. But before I could reach it, the dragon beat me there, cutting off my escape. His wings unfurled, creating a shadow that enveloped me, while his spiked tail lashed menacingly through the water. Those piercing green crystal eyes locked onto mine, burning with fury. The intensity of his glare was suffocating, a silent declaration of his rage. He didn’t just see me as prey—he saw me as an enemy.I had nowhere to ru
“No, no, no, we need to find him! Alex, do something!” Lily's frantic cries filled the room. Her face was a portrait of horror, her pale skin only adding to the starkness of the moment. Tears streamed down her face, and her breath came in sharp gasps, the kind that made my chest tighten with worry. I feared she might pass out if she didn't calm down.“Lily, please, look at me. I need you to calm down!” I pleaded, my voice trembling with urgency as I reached for her. But she recoiled, her body trembling violently, only intensifying my concern. I turned toward Jess, who had been standing behind me, silent and distant. The look on her face told me she was too devastated to help. Why is Eric doing this to me? Everything is spiraling, and I'm losing control. How am I supposed to handle Jess, let alone Lily? Before I could even try to speak, Jess moved toward Lily, gently approaching her before pulling her into a tight hug.“It’s okay, we’ll find him. But I need you to calm down,” Jess said
I saw the shock on Jess’s face and felt a pang of guilt for putting her on edge. I just couldn't keep it to myself any longer. I wanted to tell Eric, but I couldn’t bear the thought of him spiraling back into his self-loathing.“What? If she didn’t kill Eric’s parents, then who did?” Jess asked, her voice trembling as she tried to recover from the shock etched on her face.“I don’t know, Jess. I didn’t want to believe her when she said it, but deep down, I felt she was telling the truth. She mentioned that exposing the dragon heart to the world had attracted other creatures, but I still don’t understand why Eric’s parents were caught up in all this. They didn’t have the dragon heart—my mom did. So why didn’t they come for my parents eighteen years ago, before my aunt showed up?” My voice cracked under the weight of my thoughts, every word exposing the turmoil in my heart.“This is going to shatter Eric if he finds out,” Jess said, her voice heavy with sorrow. “We can’t tell him, Lily.
I stared down at our entwined hands resting against my waist as Eric’s steady breath fanned my neck. His body pressed close to mine, and for the first time in forever, everything felt… right. I wished, desperately, that the world could pause here, in this moment, so I could stay in his arms forever.Turning slowly, I shifted to face him, letting my gaze linger on his sleeping face. Peaceful, serene—it was such a stark contrast to the chaos we faced. I reached out hesitantly, my fingertips brushing against his cheek. My touch was light, almost reverent, as I leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.“Why are you awake?” His deep, hoarse voice startled me, his eyes fluttering open to meet mine.“I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t dreaming,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. “I’m trying so hard to stay in this moment with you, but… I can’t stop thinking about everything—the chaos, the danger.”Eric’s brows furrowed slightly as he pulled me closer, his arms wrapping prot
Lily's POVHe dragged me to his room, shutting the door behind him with a decisive click as he locked it. Yet, I wasn’t scared. This wasn’t my first encounter with Eric’s dragon side, but the absence of his usual glowing eyes told me that Eric was more present this time—or at least a part of him was. I just couldn’t understand why his dragon side was fully using Eric’s body while keeping him locked away.Once the door was closed, it took him a moment to face me. When he finally did, his crystal-green eyes were back, their glowing light burning into mine.“What’s your deal? Were you pretending to be Eric? Jess and Alex don’t seem to know that something’s off about you.” His words dripped with amusement as he began closing the distance between us, a smirk playing on his lips. If he thought he could use that face to intimidate me, he was sorely mistaken.“You’re here, my mate,” he said, dragging the word ‘mate’ out deliberately, as though daring me to notice. His hand reached for my chee
“What? Lily, are you insane? There’s no way I’m letting you leave!” Michael’s voice cracked with panic, his wide eyes brimming with disbelief. The mention of Terranovae sent a visible wave of unease through him, making me wonder if he recognized the name.“I’m sorry, Michael, but I’m going,” I said, my tone firm despite the trembling in my chest. “Nothing you say will make me change my mind. I can’t just sit here, waiting for her to end his life. I need to warn them about what’s coming.”Michael’s jaw tightened, and the lines of his face deepened with worry. “But why, Lily? Why would you even want to go there?” His voice softened, but I could still hear the tremor of fear beneath it.“Because she threatened me, Michael.” My voice broke slightly, but I pushed on. “She used Eric’s life to lure me in, and… she said Mom and Dad might still be alive.” My words hung heavy in the air, and I watched as Michael’s expression crumbled, shock and pain etching across his face.“What?” His voice wa
I gasped, my eyes snapping open as shock coursed through me. My heart raced as I found myself back in Michael's house. The throbbing headache from the nightmare lingered, but I knew this was more than just a bad dream. It was a message. She had told me all those things for a reason—so I would go to Terranovae. But did Terranovae even exist? A world ruled by demons? What was I even saying? Could I be like them? If what that woman said was true, and Mum was a demon, then I might be one too.Panic clawed at my chest, my thoughts spiraling into chaos. Eric was in danger. Everything she said echoed in my mind, threatening to drown me. But it was her last words that haunted me the most.Could Mum and Dad truly be alive? Had they been held captive all these years?“Lily!”A gentle tap on my shoulder jolted me, and I turned sharply, my heart pounding, only to find Michael’s worried face staring back at me.“You scared me,” I muttered, my voice trembling as I struggled to steady my racing hear
