CHAPTER FIFTY

As we journeyed deeper into the Second World,

the air grew thick with an otherworldly energy. I could feel the weight of the dead around me, their presence a gentle hum in the background.

Aunt Claire led me through winding streets and alleys, past houses that seemed to lean in, as if listening to our conversation.

Finally, we arrived at a small cottage on the outskirts of town. Smoke drifted lazily from the chimney, carrying the scent of baking bread. My heart swelled with emotion as Claire pushed open the door and gestured for me to enter.

Inside, the cottage was warm and cozy, filled with the comforting smells of home. And there, sitting by the fire, were my parents. They looked older, wearier, but their eyes still shone with love and warmth as they saw me.

"Selene," my mother whispered, as her voice trembling. "Our daughter."
