My wedding was far cry from the vision I held in my mind since I was a little girl. I had always envisioned myself getting married to the love of my life at the beach, surrounded by our family and friends in beautiful floral dresses and floral shirts. But there I was, engulfed in a sea of unfamiliar faces, marrying a man I despised more than anyone in the world, in a vineyard on his estate. I had no doubt that our wedding guest list consisted of members of The Bandoni Crime Family, or La Famiglia Bandoni as they fancied to call it, corrupt government officials and their business associates. None of these people cared about the couple getting married; they were there for business.

Different people approached us, congratulating us. All these congratulations messages should have been directed solely at Salvatore. He was the one who had finally gotten what he wanted. And as for me, they should have been offering me their condolences since I might as well have just signed my own death notice. My eyes were stinging with unshed tears, and my gaze stayed fixed on the marble floor for the most part, avoiding any eye contact unless required. But even though I was not looking at anything, I could feel eyes on me and with each second passing, the feeling was getting more and more intense. I raised my head and looked around the room. It took few seconds for my eyes to meet the darkest shade of green eyes staring at me from across the room. The young man stood by the bar, staring right straight at me and his gaze did not move even though he had noticed I had caught him staring. He looked different from all the men in the room. For one, he did not scream danger and power. He looked... normal. With his long jet black hair, tied up, he looked more like he belonged in a band, not with the bunch of corrupt men surrounded us. I wondered who he was.

“Salvatore,” a gruff voice, jolted me back and I looked in front me.

A short man with a potty belly stood in front of me and he had to be the most disheveled person in the room.

“Giuseppe,” Salvatore said back, shaking hands with his right hand while the other one remained wrapped around my waist.

"Congratulations; your choice is remarkable,” Giuseppe said, and I could feel his eyes on me, making my skin crawl.

“You are a hard man to please, Giuseppe, but I am happy you appreciate my wife's beauty,” Salvatore said, his voice dripping with unlaced pride.

“Mrs. Conti,” Giuseppe said, offering his hands to me, and I hesitated to stretch out my hand to him.

Salvatore’s grip tightened around my midriff in warning, urging me to stretch out my hand to take Giuseppe's. Giuseppe's large, sweaty palm engulfed mine, sending a wave of repulsion through me.

He raised my hand and kissed the back of my palm, and all I wanted to do was snatch my hand away and run across the room to tuck myself as far away as possible. But I stood there, my heart thudding hard enough to break my ribcage.

“Congratulations on your wedding,” Giuseppe said.

“Thank you,” I answered, hoping that his attention would shift back to Salvatore.

“You sure are a beauty,” he continued, his attention still on me, his palm still covering mine.

“Thank you,” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper..

“Too bad Salvatore saw you first,” he added and I flinched, tugging my hand, trying to let my hand slide from Giuseppe's. I glanced at Salvatore, hoping that he would help me. Made men were supposed to be possessive, right? But there was no help coming from him. Instead, his fingers dug midriff and he busted with his laughter.

“The early bird always gets the worm, Giuseppe," Salvatore responded, "But we can always talk business,”

My eyes flew open and I turned to look at Salvatore. Was he doing what I thought he was? Offering me to another man on our wedding day?

Giuseppe's own laugh filled my ears, drawing my attention to him.

“Expect my call, Conti,” he said, a grin on his face and his eyes lingering on me.

“I will be,” Salvatore answered before Giuseppe finally let go of my hand and walked away. I would have sighed with relief if my mind was not now occupied with the idea of my husband pimping me out to him.

I had heard stories of these made men taking their wives against their will. It was no secret that these made men did not take a no for an answer especially from their wives and I had been bracing myself for that with little to no success. And now there was a probability of other men being thrown into the mix? I felt my inside turning. The music and the conversations in the room started to get distant and everything in front of me started to blur.

What the hell had I gotten myself into? Was I going to survive this? Or I was better off in a cemetery somewhere or maybe drowning in the Hudson River.

“Amelia,” someone growled in my ear as I felt a tug on my body.

“Huh,” I startled looking up to see Salvatore hard gray eyes glaring at.

“The boss is greeting you,” he said and I looked up.

In front of us, stood a man, probably in his sixties, his face hard and his eyes cold.I stared at him for a moment, my mind still stuck in a trance. Salvatore’s fingers dug into my midriff again and I almost jumped out of his hold. I fumbled and finally offered my hand to “The Boss” as Salvatore addressed.

“Congratulations,” The Boss said, his voice tight and his hold strong on my hands.

I only nodded, refusing to say a word since I could not trust my voice.

“Pardon, my wife, she has not been resting well since the wedding planning started,” Salvatore said.

“I understand, planning a wedding can be a bit hectic. Maybe you should take her out for a while so that she can get some fresh air,” The Boss suggested, his voice still tight and void, not fooling me that he was any better.

“I will,” Salvatore said.

The Boss walked away, and Salvatore's hold tightened around me as he led me out of the room. We rounded a corner, and we were out of sight when he released me and pinned me on the walls instead.

“Now, listen Amelia,” he whispered harshly, “Your job as my wife, is to act pretty and smile at whoever you need to smile at. Not acting like a haunted zombie like you are doing. Do you understand?”

“But…,” I started to argue but he shut me down immediately.

“There are no buts, Amelia. You are my property, Amelia and you do exactly what I tell you to do. I don't have to remind you what is at stake here, do I?”

I shook my head no.

“Good. Now wipe off that zombie look and plaster a smile in that face and act like a happy bride that you should be,”

I nodded, not saying a word.

“Now look at me,” he ordered and I schooled my features, trying my best not to let what I was feeling inside show on my face.

“Better,” he said and took my hand, dragging me back to the ballroom. I followed him, hoping and praying that I did not have to put up with this charade of acting happy bride for a long time.

Just as we walked back in, the lights flickered, I looked up wondering what was going on. I wondered if God had answered my prayers and was cutting this facade short.

The lights went off and an explosion followed. I screamed going down and closing my ears with my hands. I heard guns being drawn out and men shouting orders.

I heard the first gunshot and I screamed as several other gunshots followed.

I had hoped for an end to the night but a shoot out was not on my list of choices on how I would have preferred the night to end. But then life had not been giving me any choices for a long time and I had to deal with whatever it gave me.

I needed to find my brother and leave. I knew he was somewhere in the Salvatore Mansion, and it would take me a while to find him, but everybody was distracted and would not care about me. Salvatore certainly didn't care. Because when I looked up, he was nowhere near my sight; no one was. This chaos needed to go on for a while to buy me more time and give me an opportunity to run.

I looked around, trying my best to locate the closest exit in the darkness. I found one and was about to dash towards it when I felt my hair being pulled. I screamed with pain as hold my head and getting up to my feet. The person pulling on my hair pushed me and I stumbled into someone else's hold.

“Take her out of here,” Salvatore ordered.

He had been the one pulling on my hair and the man he was ordering, was the green eyed guy who had been staring at me since this wedding started.

He was not built up like most men in the mafia. He was lean but he was surely strong. The moment tried to kick out of his hold, he scooped me up like I weighed nothing and put me over his shoulder. I was kicking and shouting but he was not letting go until we were outside. He opened the door to his car and placed me inside, shutting the door right in my face, he went to the driver's seat and drove off the estate.

When I opened my eyes, my head was throbbing and my body felt heavy, and I wondered why it was so. It took me a while to recall the shootout at the wedding and the green-eyed guy injecting me something after he carried me to his car. Even though my body was screaming in pain and would have appreciated some rest, I needed to get up. My father could have died in that shootout, and Ben might be in danger since he was at Salvatore's house during the shootout. I needed to get up and figure out where I was and then look for my family. I wondered how much time had passed. Ben needed to take his medication. He had type 2 diabetes, and it was never good for him to skip medication. With me away from him, I was not sure if that happened.I sat up straight before opening my eyes. A sharp pain stuck my head and I held my head in my palms, trying to contain the headache. When the ache toned down, I looked around and the room I was in was completely lifeless. Just the bed and nothing else I jumpe

I found myself lounging on the couch, scrolling aimlessly through the channels on the TV, trying to find something that could distract me until Salvatore arrives. Never had I imagined that I would wait for the husband I hated to come home, but there I was, hoping he walks through the door. Hours later, I heard Alessandro calling out my name, and I looked up, seeing him walking into the room. Why was he looking for me now? He had made it clear that he was not interested in having a conversation with me whatsoever.“Yes?” I replied.“Time to leave,” he answered and I frowned.“Where are we going? Is my family okay?” I asked instead,“I am taking you where your husband wants you and as for your precious family, you can ask him when you meet him.”“You didn't…,” I started, but he cut me off.“Get up. I don't have time to answer your questions and neither do have the answers,” he snapped. He might not look like his father, and he might not emanate his father's energy, but he surely was n

Alessandro' POV I parked my car in front of my father's house and stepped out. He had been breathing down my neck, demanding that I had to meet him. I knew what it was about. He wanted to make sure I was going to take the oath on the next initiation night, confirming my place within the famiglia. His position in the famiglia was already being challenged since I, his only heir, was being reluctant to take on duties in the family. And what he wanted was to maintain his position in famiglia. The mafia was very traditional, and inheritance mattered a whole lot more than you would expect it to be in the 21st century. Was I going to take the oath?Yes. I was. There was no running away from that. Was I ever going to be really part of the famiglia? Not if I could help it. I walked through the doors and passed a number of guards standing watch. They were more than the usual number and seemed to be more alert too. I guess the attack on his wedding night had made him anxious and paranoid.

Alessandro's POVI got to my penthouse and went straight into my bathroom to wash off my father's wife's blood from my body. I discarded my clothes in the trash can and took a bath, making a mental note that I needed to take my Mesarati to the car wash. It was my favorite. After I was done, I went into my study. I was working on the security system for a research company in the UK, and I thought I could work on that since I was not feeling sleepy even though it was already 2am. I tried to concentrate on my computer, but my mind kept drifting back to Amelia. The haunting images of her frail body on the floor, in the back seat of my car and her on the stretcher bed were etched in my head. The sound of her whimpers echoed in my mind, refusing to fade away.Amelia had made her choices, and now she was suffering the consequences of her involvement with my father. I was not supposed to be feeling any empathy for her; she was a willing victimI sighed, trying to push my thoughts aside and fo

I might as well have had a well-prepaid breakfast if I was going to face my father. And, oh, also talk to my father’s wife, who was now looking up and at me with a frown on her face.“Amelia,” I softly said.“What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice gruff.“How are you feeling? Alessandro' POVIn a day’s time, I sat on a hired private jet going to Costa Rica for my first assignment for the famiglia. I sat opposite my father, starring at him while he was taking a nap. I looked at him, a fresh wave of hate brewing inside me, and I wished I could pull out the knife in my pocket and stab him. I had spent my hours before the flight looking into Amelia. My guess had been right. He had blackmailed Amelia into marrying him. Finding Amelia’s father was easy, and looking into his life was not hard. He was a regular at The Rush, blowing off money on the gambling tables. That had given me a hint of what might have happened. Accessing my father’s books was easy. I would not have trusted his accountant if I were him. He knew nothing about protecting data. I did not break any sweat to hack into his GammaStack and access the bank accounts. Sure enough, Amelia’s father had borrowed money from my father and failed to pay it back. Amelia's POVTwo weeks laterIt was Lily and Alessandro's engagement party. One that I had the torture to help planning. It was like Lily wanted to rub it in my face and drive it right into my head that she was the one marrying him. She was calling me every other time, disturbing my peace, asking me to make impossible changes to the initially planned stuff, asking me if I was anywhere near her fiancé since he was not answering his phone, checking up on me, and every annoying reason you could think of.I could not wait to see who was going to have the last laugh.I watched her, holding on to Alessandro like her life depended on it. They stood in the spotlight of the room, and people were congratulating them. Lily had a perpetual smile on her face, while Alessandro looked like he wanted to be somewhere else. His gaze caught mine amongst the crowd, and I winked at him, and I licked my red-colored lips and bit on it. His jaw twitched, and I knew I had him right where I wanted him. It was

Alessandro's POV Amelia had not outright turned down my idea. She had not jumped at the idea either. That did not surprise me. She was smart and knew the dangers of running away from the mafia. “Think about it,” I had told her, and she nodded. I had walked out of her room, and all day I had been hoping and praying she was going to decide to take the risk and run away with me. When my phone dinged, making that sound that let me know she had texted on our app, my heart almost jumped to my throat. I opened my phone and the text read,Let us do it.Fuck! She had agreed to this craziness. My heart did a flip-flop. She loved me enough to risk it all just to be with me. I wanted to hug her and keep her in my arms. I checked the time; it was 3 p.m. My father was not going to be back home in at least four hours. Alberto liked me well enough to let me knock off early. “Al,” I said, getting in his office.“Alessandro, what can I help you with?”“I need to check on a few things for my place,”

I wanted to be with him, but running away was too much of a big risk. One that would end up with both of us dead. Not just both of us, but Ben too.“Mrs. Conti,” the girl on the reception called out, and I stood up. I did not know the girl, meaning she was new.“Dr. Miles will see you now,” she said, and I muttered a thank you and headed for the consultation room.“Amelia,” Dr. Miles said as I stepped in her space. Her voice was not if greeting but rather concern.“How did it happen? I gave you a shot a month ago,” she said, taking my hands into hers.“Ivy,” I said, calling her by her real name. “Don't worry yourself. I am not pregnant.” “You are not?” she said, her eye slitting at me.“I am not,” I confirmed. “I had some reason to.”She looked relieved, but then something crossed my mind.“So what are you going to do? There was no way my Alessandro was marrying someone else. But reality was unveiling right in front of me. He was kissing his fiance. I turned and rushed back to my room. I threw myself on my bed and covered my whole body with the covers. How had I become so stupid? I was a total idiot to believe that he loved me. Amelia’s POV Salvatore’s friend, the one he had visited in Chicago, was visiting. Apparently he was bringing his wife and daughter, so as usual, I had to dress up and act the lovely wife. Not that I still hated dressing up. I kind of now loved dressing up. Not for Salvatore or his guests. But for Alessandro. I loved to draw his attention to me, serve as a distraction to everything in the room, and lure him in deeper than he already was. He loved to see me in white, looking like a perfect angel, as he claimed, and I have never worn white so much in my life.I wore yet another white dress as I greet and welcome Salvatore’s friend and his family. Aloisio looked around Salvatore’s age, while his wife, Liza, looked a few years younger than him.
