F O U R

Annabel's POV.

The next day was my mother and daughter's funeral. Earlier before, I found that the hospital which conducted my mother's autopsy was the Crofwell's hospital.

Michelle's father, Mr Crofwell owns the hospital. I was not surprised, both he and Mr Davis are partners in crime. They must have worked together to forge this autopsy report.

However since today is my daughter and mother's funeral I did not throw a tantrum. I also said nothing to anybody while hurting at the fact that Michelle had taken my spot as Scott's wife and he was letting her.

He avoided me like a plague and nothing hurt worse than this. While the Priest read verses from the bible I could see her holding Scott's shoulder and letting him cry against her chest.

I did not go to him neither did he come to me. I stood alone, everyone avoiding me like a disease. Tears did not drop from my eyes even as I watched my mother's casket go six feet down. I'd used up all the tears in my eyes, there was none anymore.

My unborn child had a stone carved in her honor. Scott broke down by its side and cried horribly. The stone carver came to me, standing almost two feet away.

I know.

I looked horrible. My golden brown hair lost its luminous quality over the month, I was skinny and my eyes were as white as a piece of paper.

"Ma'am.. what's your daughter's name? I need to carve it on the stone."

I nodded and answered, "Samantha. Samantha Davis."

The stone carver smiled, "It's a nice name, madam."

I stared at him. He is the only person who has spoken to me like I had not gone mad since I lost my mum and daughter. Even though I wanted to smile back at him, my heart was to heavy to even pretend to be fine.

"I'm sorry for your loss ma'am." he said before returning to the stone. While everyone returned home for the reception, I remained by the stone.

I tried not to think of the fact that Scott did not spare me a single glance since the beginning of the funeral.

At twenty-two I had already lost everything. As I stared at both the stones of my mum and daughter I finally opened my parched lips and spoke.

"I'll miss you both so much." my voice cracked and I felt the tears preparing themselves behind my eyes, "I..I promise that I will avenge your death. I will expose Mr Davis all on my own if I have to."

"..even without your dad's help." I said, staring at my daughter's stone. I got up and touched each of the stones before I left the cemetery.

On my arrival at the mansion, people were partying and celebrating. I did not care to look where Scott and Michelle would be so I headed straight for the stairs however a man in black suit stopped me.

"Mrs Davis..can I speak to you for a moment?"

I looked at him from head to toe trying to remember where I'd once seen him. I gave up racking my head and followed him to the verandah.

We took our seats and he placed his files on the table before speaking.

"I am your adoptive mother's lawyer." he said, "My name is Jaggers."

"Jaggers?"

"Yes, Mr. Jaggers."

"Okay."

"Your mother had called for me two months ago, some days before her death."

I became attentive now. Sitting up, I asked, "Why?"

"She seemed to have angered Mr Davis, ma'am. She wouldn't tell me what she did however all she was saying while preparing her will was, 'take care of my child.' "

I shut my eyes and opened them again. All along I was right. There was no way my mother would die of an heart attack. That woman measured her meals down to the ingredients. She could seat you down for hours and lecture you on health.

Mr Jaggers passed me a file and said, "She gave all she had to you, Annabel. Her assets.. liabilities..insurances..houses and all of her wealth."

"I've had them transferred into your name." he added and I took the file from him but did not open it.

I said, "I want justice for my mother, Mr Jaggers. And even my unborn child. Can you help me put Mr Davis in jail?"

"I worked for your mother all her life. I am more than willing to work for you as well."

I felt pleased to hear that.

"I was alone in the room, my husband was at work. Michelle Crofwell snuck up behind me and rendered me unconscious-" I began to tell him what happened.

....

I'd gone with Mr. Jaggers to prepare the case file few hours later. When I returned, the Davis' were having dinner.

My heart squeezed in pain. Scott would usually not have dinner without me. We used to have dinner together, it was a kind of law we established years ago.

But I pushed it off my mind as I stopped in front of the dinner table, causing everyone to look up. I tossed the file to Mr. Davis.

"I have a case filed against you," I said, "We're to meet at the court two days from now."

The entire family stared at me like I'd lost it completely but I loved the look of shock that appeared on Mr Davis and Vivian's face.

If they thought I would back down easily then they're wrong. Up until now, they have manoeuvred my effort to expose them.

Let's see if they could manipulate the law.

Scott banged angrily on the dinner table and rose on his feet shouting, "You will do no such thing, Annabel!"

"Of course I will." I replied, his hateful gaze no longer surprising me, "Since you will not believe me and help me get justice for our daughter, I'm willing to go this far!"

"Haven't you done enough smothering my father's image?! He's a Governor, having to appear in court because of you is humiliating!" Scott yelled.

"He does not deserve to be a Governor." I replied calmly, "God knows how many lives he has ruined! He deserves to be in jail!"

"Annabel you will call off the lawsuit immediately!" he ordered.

"No, I will not." I said firmly.

I saw him nod, and then he said, "Prepare for a divorce then."
