The Divorce
“You good for nothing!” Elena poured and in turn, Sylvia felt the hot palms of Elena connecting with her cheeks – a resounding slap that sent her ears ringing.
Sylvia gasped as her hands ran up to hold her cheeks to mellow the impact of the slap. She looked at her mother-in-law with teary eyes.
“How could you be so clueless?” Elena barked, her whole body shacking as a result of her raging anger. “Don’t you know how to do anything right? How dare you tell me you want to quit your job? Do you have any idea how much help that particular one has been to us?” she yelled at Sylvia, with reverberating sound echoing through the hallways.
Sylvia couldn’t help but stare at her mother-in-law as tears began to roll down her succulent cheeks. She just couldn’t bring herself to utter a word. What had she not done? Sylvia worked four stressful jobs weekly and practically provided for the family. Ever since her husband’s company went bankrupt, Sylvia took over the breadwinner of the house, working four jobs; two Mondays to Fridays, and the remaining two during weekends. This had tremendously affected her mental health.
After quitting the fourth one as the doctor instructed, her mother-in-law assumes she’d committed a huge offense.
Sylvia had been married to Jasper Blackwood for four years now and on no account had she had any iota of peace since her assumption of the position as the wife of Mr. Blackwood. He promised her heaven and earth, she ignored her family’s warnings and got married to him, and ever since, she’d been rather a punching bag to him while his family turned her into an object of ridicule, blaming her for the collapse of the family’s company.
She wondered if all this happening to her was heaven’s way of punishing her for ignoring her family’s warnings. And for the fact she still loved Jasper, she was ready to bear all the pains she’d gotten used to for the past four years.
“Forgive me, Mother,” Sylvia apologized, but Elena scoffed and stared at her like she was some piece of trash.
“Sorry can’t solve this, Sylvia. If you know what’s good for you, you better return to that company and withdraw that resignation letter you submitted. How can you be this heartless? You’re the reason we’re in this mess today. The very moment you came into this family, things fell apart. Go back and retrieve that letter now. Do not make me repeat myself.”
“Please, Mother, I can’t afford the trauma of four jobs anymore. I can still support the family with these three jobs. I supposed you need me alive to support the family, right?” Sylvia asked, hoping there was an understanding between them.
“Do I look like I care? If you die now, I’ll gladly sponsor your burial. And will be the happiest person at your funeral!” Her mother-in-law sneered to her utter shock. This was the same woman that almost died in the hospital if Sylvia hadn’t donated her blood to her. How could she be this heartless to her?
“You need to get the hell out of my sight right now! Get lost!” She pushed Sylvia away while moving to wash her hands in the tap in the kitchen as if Sylvia was some kind of dirt.
Sylvia walked to the sitting room to get some painkillers for her aching body, still with the resolve to make the marriage work as long as she still believed that Jasper loved her.
Before she could push open the drawer, her hand was slapped behind her as she quickly turned.
“What do you think you’re doing? Who gave you the right to access this drawer?” Thomas – Jasper’s younger brother asked.
“My body is in pain. I need the pain relief. Please…”
“Does that look like any of my business?” He said with no emotion and Sylvia flinched. “Mum asked us to stop you from touching anything in this house. Your bad luck is beginning to rub off on everybody. Please, leave.” He said mockingly.
That was the same drawer Sylvia bought with her hard-earned money. That was the same boy whose education Sylvia sponsored with her hard-earned money. This time, she was not going to let this one pass.
“There is no way I’ll let you touch this drawer. I don’t care if you bought it with your money. This is our house. Anyways, I have a big game coming up later tonight, and I need some a thousand dollars from you,” Thomas added, clicking his tongue.
“In your dreams!” Sylvia scoffed. “You aren’t getting a dime from me this time.” She turned to leave.
“I know you’d refuse that’s why I already helped myself with your credit card,” he added, beaming with a smile.
Sylvia grudgingly picked up the credit card from the floor. Another card had just been emptied. How was she going to survive such a condition? As she was about to make her way out of the living room, she heard the entrance door open, she turned and saw Jasper entering. She ran towards him with a wide smile to welcome him home; a smile that wasn’t returned. She was used to it already.
“Welcome back, babe,” she reached to take his suitcase from him, but he pushed her away, his face flushed with sadness.”
“Haven’t I warned you not to welcome me, touch me, or any of my things?” He asked with anger in his voice, and Sylvia’s breath cut in her throat.
Sylvia lowered her head apologetically. “I’m sorry.” Jasper entered, walking away. But what Sylvia never expected was the slender figure that followed him in. He took her hand with him and beamed a smile.
A sense of jealousy washed over Sylvia, she wished for such a smile from her husband to her. She took a closer look at the woman and noticed from her dressings and pieces of jewelry that she was from a wealthy family and must be a renowned one in New York and a business associate with the Poshelins. Sylvia wondered what the woman could be up to with her husband. She convinced herself the woman could be here just for business.
Sylvia’s demeanor lit up with smiles as went to join them on the couch. Despite how clung she was seated with Jasper, Sylvia waved it off to avoid awakening her husband’s wrath again.
“Sylvy,” Jasper called with a smile on his face. Sylvia’s heart skipped a bit. She couldn’t remember the last time he called her that name and with such a gentle voice. She quickly returned the smile. “I’d like you to meet Amanda Winston, my girlfriend.”
Sylvia blinked, shifting closer to the edge of her seat.
“Excuse me?” She refused to believe she heard him clear.
“You aren’t deaf, so I know you heard me, but I’ll repeat myself so that it can stick to your empty skull. Amanda Winston is my girlfriend.” He grabbed Amanda’s hand into his and she buried her head into his chest. She stared at Sylvia mockingly.
“Girlfriend?” Sylvia asked with widened eyes in shock. “You must be kidding me!”
“I’m in no mood for kidding, woman. She is beautiful, rich, and elegant, the kind of woman I want. So, I want you to go into your room, pack your things, and get out of my house.”
“What? Oh, goodness!” Sylvia exclaimed with teary eyes. “I’m your wife, Jasper. You can’t do this to me.”
Jasper stood up angrily, brought out a manila file from his suitcase, and slammed it on the center table.
“It is over between us!” he declared. “I’m divorcing you!” Sylvia’s eyebrow widened. Tears began to roll down her cheeks.
“Why?!”
Sign the Divorce“You and I know this sham of a marriage isn’t working, Sylvia. And I’m tired of trying to make it work, and…”“What are you saying, Jasper? I’ve been the one working my ass work up for the past four years, trying to fix our marriage. You can’t call for divorce out of the blue, not for everything I’ve done for this family, for this marriage to make it work.” Sylvia explained, hoping he had got a clear picture of her sacrifices, but his expression was far from it.He stared at her, his face contorting into a stern frown. “What did you just say? I have tried. How dare you tell me you are the only one making an effort? I still kept you under my roof after you ruined me, my company went down in shambles because I married you, yet I put that behind me and tolerated you for four fucking years. What more do you want from me?” His yelling drew the attention of his mother and Thomas, his younger brother.Out of their rooms, they came upon me like swarms of locusts.“What in Go
HomecomingShe took a deep breath, and made her way out of the car as she observed the home she left for a long time now. She quickly made her into the mansion, flipping her eyes around the environment. For four years, she turned her back on them and followed Jasper. She cut off all link and connections with her family because she didn’t want any of them to know her whereabout with Jasper.Sylvia didn’t take the decision of running after Jasper because she despised her family. She did what she did because of her father’s persuasion to marry Douglas – one of the youngest and wealthiest men in all the city of New York and take over the family’s business. She knew this was based on business arrangement but she wanted something else – she wanted to marry for love and that could only be found with Jasper. But now, she realized she’d made the biggest mistake of her life.Maids lined up in their numbers to welcome her as she made her way through the door. She walked past them with her head h
The ProposalSylvia’s eyes widened and her mouth curled into ‘o.’ She was shocked hearing Douglas address her as his ‘dear wife.’“Sylvia,” Mr. Brooks tapped her and she regained her composure.“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Brooks.” She said, forcing a smile and Douglas could tell that smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.“Skip the formalities, call me Douglas.” He winked at her and helped himself to a seat on the couch. Sylvia nodded slowly and took her seat too.Douglas scanned his wife-to-be from head and toe and noticed she hadn’t changed a bit except for the fact that she only lost a significant amount of weight. Sylvia had been gone for four years, now she was back, and Douglas was determined never to let slip his hand again. Both Douglas and Sylvia attended the same university and the same business school. That was where Douglas fell in love with her at first sight, but she was completely engrossed in her studies that she barely noticed him. After school, she ran afte
The New CEOThe next day, in the evening, seated on the bed, in her room, Sylvia’s mind wondered in thought to what Douglas said to her yesterday. It was a few hours before the night event. What did he mean by he wants her? At first, thought he could be taking her as a mere commodity but when she began to think deep, she understood what he actually meant, and still left in shock.Could it be that he had been waiting for her for the past four years? Sylvia spent some hours of the night researching his company, and it turned out Douglas was doing pretty well in his real estate business with international recognition. There was no way he could want her because of material gain from her family. So, what could be his motive behind this marriage? These thoughts were clouded in Sylvia’s head. She was quickly jolted out of her reverie by a sudden knock at the door. “Please, come in,” she said, turning to the door. It opened, revealing Allison who held a box in her hand, walking towards Sylvia
Kendra looked at Brian and he nodded vigorously, which made her shiver. “Philip?” She said softly, almost in a whisper. “Oh, yes, Mom. Uncle Philip was very kind to me, he almost ran over me with his car but he managed to swerve and stopped the car just in time then he alighted to check if I was alright.” Kendra's mind was reeling. Philip? Here? After all these years? She breathed in deeply as she tried to calm herself down. “Mrs. Winston,” she called the nanny. ”How could you allow this to happen? Brian could have been injured badly.” “Oh, Ms. Williams, I am so sorry. You see, he was playing with his friends and the next thing he is running towards the street, and before I know it, I was struggling to catch up with him.” '‘What am I paying you fo r?!’ Kendra said, her fear translated to anger. ”I handed over my son to you and you were meant to protect him!” “Mom, please do not be angry with Nanny,” Brian pleaded, pulling her hand gently. ‘'It was my fault, I saw a puppy across
Philip's POVI was standing in front of the mirror adjusting my tie. Today, something seemed to be off, but I couldn't quite think of what it was. My phone vibrated breaking me from the train of my thoughts. “Mr. Brooks,” Adrian’s voice came through the speaker, “I think the board is panicking now, the sales are down and they want an emergency meeting, like, now. ” “Christ,” I said aloud, as I raked my fingers through my thinning hair. ”I’ll be there in twenty.“ Taking the keys, I ran out of the house with streams of thoughts in my head. It could not be this bad, could it? We used to dominate the market for quite a number of years. This could only have been a blip, right? Staring off into space, I nearly ran into a kid. I hastily held the brakes and shuddered at the close proximity that nearly claimed th child's life. '‘Bloody hell!’' I cursed as I slammed the car into the park and got out. "Hey, kid! You okay?" The boy then raised his eyes towards me and I could see he was on
Kendra’s POVI lost my breath the moment I heard Brian utter that name – Philip. A name that I had tried so hard to leave in the past, a name that I had wanted to wipe off my memory. But there it was, rearing its ugly head once more, and from my own son’s mouth at that. I got engrossed in my mind when I heard two young ladies talking near the door of the conference room. “I heard that Mr. Brooks,” one of them said to the other. ”Some people said he owes his employees several months of unpaid salaries.”‘‘Oh, really?’’ The other one said, ‘’I am not surprised. A friend of mine in the account section told me that he always boasts of firing anyone who dares to question his authority.” ‘’Oh well, typical Philip Brooks,” The first woman said. “He just likes to bully people around with his muscles but he cannot even pay his workers their salaries when due.” This made me shiver with cold blood. Philip Brooks – it could not be the same one, could it? I muttered to myself, annoyed by my
Philip’s POVI was at my desk, head resting on my hands, staring at the piles of financial statements that lay before me, wondering how things had got this out of hand. I remember we were on the top and enjoying our success and now... bankruptcy? It didn't seem possible. A knock on the door brought me out of my spin cycle of anxiety. “Come in,” I said as calmly as I could despite the stress building up in me. Lillian, my secretary, leaned in through the door. ”Hello, Mr. Brooks, the conference room is free and available for the meeting. Right. The meeting. I'd almost forgotten. “Thanks, Lil I will be there shortly.” I sighed, adjusted my tie, and left for the conference. When I entered the conference room, it was quite evident that the heads of departments were stressed up. Everyone was looking at me with the expectation to deliver answers I was not certain I had. “Okay, everyone,” I said, attempting to sound much more certain than I actually was. '‘There will be no need to mince
