Chapter 24

I sat in the back of the car, watching as the driver maneuvered through the busy roads leading to the airport. The morning air was crisp, and the sky was a soft shade of blue, perfect weather for a flight.

I couldn’t help but wonder why Jake had sent a driver. I would have made my way to the airport on my own, but my father had been there when the driver arrived, so I had no choice but to oblige.

Beside me sat my neatly packed luggage. I mentally ran through my checklist. Passport? Check. Important documents? Check. Headphones? Definitely needed.

As we neared the airport, I noticed something odd. The driver didn’t stop at the main terminal like usual. Instead, he took a different turn.

I frowned. “Where is he going?” I said to myself

Instead of heading toward the commercial entrance, we moved past it and drove onto a private access road. My eyes scanned my surroundings. There were no long security lines, no crowded departure gates, just a sleek, quiet area with a row of pr

Chapter 25 I was lost in the melody playing through my headphones, the soft hum of the jet blending with the music. I had no idea when sleep came in the exhaustion from the past few days must have finally caught up. A tap on my shoulder stirred me slightly, but I ignored it, shifting deeper into the seat. Then, another tap this time firmer. I groaned, still keeping my eyes closed. I wasn’t ready to wake up yet. “Andrea, wake up.” The voice was close to my ear—too close. And that cologne… it smelled familiar. My eyes flew open, and I found myself staring into a pair of sharp blue eyes. Jake. He leaned away casually and settled back into his seat. “What the hell, Jake?” I let out a frustrated breath. Jake smirked. “What did I do? I tapped you several times to let you know we’d be approaching Seattle in a few minutes, but you didn’t respond. So, I thought of a brilliant idea to whisper in your ear to bring you back from dreamland. And guess what? It worked.” He leaned back cr

Chapter 26 “Jake, why on earth do you think this is interesting? This is a nightmare! And why do you look so unbothered by the situation we’re in?” I snapped, frustration boiling over. Jake leaned against the minibar, his expression annoyingly calm. “Firstly, Andrea, the deed is already done. Unless you’ve figured out a way to summon another suite out of thin air, I don’t see the point of panicking. Would you rather we drive around the city all night searching for a vacancy that may not exist?” His relaxed tone only fueled my irritation. “Secondly,” he continued, his gaze flicking toward the bed, “it’s just a bed. It’s big enough for both of us. So why are you still standing there like it’s about to swallow you whole?” I clenched my jaw, my arms folding tightly across my chest. He had a point, but that didn’t mean I had to like it. Jake turned away as if the conversation no longer interested him. “Now, if you don’t mind, I need a drink.” He reached for a bottle and poured himse

  • Ex-Husband’s Nemesis   A step closer

Chapter 27Jake’s POVWhen I first heard about this trip, I saw it as an opportunity to get close to Andrea and make her trust me. She had been avoiding me for the past week. I didn’t know if she thought I hadn’t noticed, but I saw how she looked away the moment she caught sight of me and how she always hurried out of the room whenever I entered. She was trying to build a wall around herself, and I would try my best to break it. This trip would change that.I had woken up before her. I turned and saw that she was still sleeping; she had crossed the pillow boundary she placed between us on the bed. Her long hair spread out over the pillow. The tension from last night had melted away in sleep, leaving her looking peaceful—and vulnerable. My mind went back to yesterday, to how angry she was when she realized we were sharing a room. The moment I heard the receptionist say there was only one room available, I knew Andrea was going to lose it. I could see her face burning with anger. I wasn

A slow smile crept onto my lips. The meeting had gone well—better than I had expected. I had been nervous at first since it was my first time meeting foreign investors, and I didn’t want to make any mistakes. But my father had trusted me to handle it, and I was glad I didn’t mess it up.Even Jake seemed pleased with my performance. Not that I cared what he thought, but his words—“You did well”—felt like a genuine compliment to my efforts.Jake had been quiet since we got in the car. I turned to glance at him and saw that he was focused on his phone. I guess even Jake has quiet moments.I shifted my eyes to the window and frowned. Something felt off. The route wasn’t familiar. The buildings outside were different, and the street signs were ones I didn’t recognize. A nagging uneasiness crawled up my spine. This wasn’t the way back.I had always been good

It felt as if time had stopped, trapping me in a moment I desperately wanted to escape. The soft music playing in the background, the murmurs of people chatting beside me—all of it faded into nothing.I could see nobody but Jason right now.My head was spinning. I was not ready to face him. I wasn’t prepared for what was happening. What was I supposed to do? I had tried my best to bury every memory of him, but here he was, walking toward me, smirking like he still had control over my life.A suffocating pressure wrapped around my chest. My fingers curled against my dress, my entire body on the verge of shaking. I felt like I was about to pass out. Chapter 30Jason’s POVI didn’t hear a single word the man beside me was saying—my whole focus was on Andrea. I sure wasn’t expecting what I got tonight. When I caught sight of her, at first, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had been turning the city down searching for her, but never in a million years did I think I would meet her at this event.I had just walked away from her, but my blood was still hot from our conversation. I could still see the fire in her eyes, hear the sharp edge in her voice, and the way she dared to speak to me like I was beneath her. She was nothing like the woman I had once crushed under my heel. That wasn’t the Andrea I had left behind. The Andrea I knew had been weak, desperate to please me, willing to crawl if it meant earning my approval. The Andrea I had discarded should have been nothing more than a broken shell, a shadow of the woman she once was.My body was still filled with so much rage. I imagined myself standing tall, my voice steady, my words cutting through him like a blade. Sometimes, in my mind, I would smirk as I watched the realization dawn in his eyes—that he should never have underestimated me.But tonight…Tonight had been nothing like that. The moment our eyes met, my breath caught in my throat. My body trembled, and everything I had practiced vanished from my mind. To think that I had almost let my fear control me, that I had been on the verge of running away—if not for Jake, who had spoken sense into me.I just wanted to get to my room, have a drink, and get some sleep. I opened my eyes wider, but everything still looked blurry.“Shit,” I muttered, rubbing my eyes until my vision cleared. I looked around the room.Claire wasn’t there.Where did she go this early?I swung my legs off the bed and stood up, only to stumble, catching the edge of the nightstand to steady myself.I needed some water. My mouth was dry, and I could still taste the whiskey from last night.Just as I was about to call out for someone, the door creaked open.Claire walked in, with a maid holding a bowl and a jar of water.“Good morning, sir,” the maid greeted.I ignored.“You can hand it over to me,” Claire said to the maid. Jason needs to know what just happened.I grabbed my phone from the table, my fingers moving fast. The screen lit up—Jason’s name glaring back at me. I tapped the call button and pressed the phone to my ear. It only rang twice.“Hello Claire ““Jason, Andrea saw you leaving the boutique,” I said immediately.“Huh?” He sounded nervous, caught off guard. “She saw me?”“She saw you walking out of the boutique,” I repeated, pacing the floor.“I heard you the first time, Claire. They were like cats and rats, so the question popped into my head again: Why was Jason walking out of Claire’s boutique?I shifted in my seat, chewing the inside of my cheek. My head was spinning with questions I couldn’t answer. The more I thought about it, the more restless I felt.Sitting here wasn’t going to give me answers. I opened the door and started walking down to the boutique. The receptionist welcomed me with a smile when I got in.“Good afternoon, ma. Welcome to Claire’s.”I returned a polite nod. “Hi, I’m here to see Claire.”“One moment, please.”She picked up the phone, I could tell by the way she looked at me that she recognized me.I waited, arms crossed, eyes drifting toward the hallway. That was just… step one.”I sat up straighter, my eyes narrowing. “What do you mean by step one?”Jake shrugged, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips. “That press conference? That was me killing two birds with one stone. Your name’s cleared. The public believes you. But as for Jason… this is far from over.”“You already gave him the file,” I said slowly, suspicion creeping into my voice. “So what else is left?”He turned to face me more fully, his expression unreadable, eyes sharp. “Did I?” he asked.I let out a frustrated breath, throwing my hands up. “Can you please just stop answering my questions with another question, Jake? You have something up your sleeves. I can feel it.”He chuckled and lifted both arms, rolling up his sleeves dramatically. “I’ve got nothing under my sleeves, Andrea.”“Jake…”

Chapter 81Andrea’s POVI nearly choked on my coffee when Jason’s face popped up on my screen. He looked expressionless . Cold. Like he was reading a script straight off the teleprompter with no soul behind it.But I knew better.Beneath that polished suit and deadpan expression, I could see the cracks. The stiffness in his shoulders. The way his eyes avoided the cameras. He looked like a man holding his breath underwater—desperate not to drown, trying to make it seem like this was all under control. It wasn’t.He was miserable, and he felt like a damn loser for standing up there. I could see it in the way his jaw twitched after every sentence like he had to force the words out without spitting. He didn’t want to do this. This wasn’t some noble act of redemption. He didn’t have a choice. And the way he was acting—like he was one broken, lonely ex-husband who had no choice but to drag my name because of how pained and heartbroken he was? So pathetic. Some things never change. Even now,

My hands paused. I stared at my reflection—sharp suit, clean shave, everything in place—but I still looked like hell. I looked like a man about to step into a war he already lost. “Jason?” Claire’s voice floated in behind me. I didn’t turn. She walked in, her heels clicking against the marble floor. I caught her reflection beside mine—flawless, hair pinned up, makeup soft and polished. She wore a cream-colored dress that hugged her in all the right places. “You look tense,” she said gently, wrapping her arms around my waist from behind. “Everything’s going to be fine.” I didn’t say anything. My eyes were locked on the tie, my knuckles clenched around the fabric. “Jason,” she said again, a little firmer this time. “You’ve got this. Just go in, say what you planned, and walk out. You’r

Like he hadn’t just slammed me against the wall a few hours ago and wrapped his hand around my throat like I was an enemy in his way and not a woman he claimed to love.I lay there wide awake, staring at the ceiling. Every time I closed my eyes, I could feel it again—his fingers digging in, the panic clawing up my throat, the way my legs gave out under me. My heart wouldn’t slow down. My chest still felt tight, like I hadn’t fully caught my breath since.Though he had apologized and promised it would never happen again, could I count on his words? I had never seen him like this before—not toward me. For the first time since we became an item, I was scared. I was terrified of him.I shifted slightly, careful not to wake him.
