Captain Lee was standing in the door of an office when I arrived at the police station. "Miss Allen," he greeted me.
"Hello," I said, my voice sounding a lot more stable than I was feeling. "Is everything alright? Is the autopsy finished?"
"Yes, we received the results this afternoon. Step inside my office, will you."
I walked into the small office to find Eric already sitting there, his hands folded in his lap. I sat down beside him, confused.
Captain Lee sat down behind the desk in front of us. "I've called Genevieve down here as well but I assume she's still resting," he said.
I looked at Eric who didn't meet my gaze and then looked back at Lee. "What's going on here?"
Lee leaned forward on his desk, folding his han
I arrived at the police station in a short amount of time, out of breath from the brisk walk and the adrenaline that coursed through my veins.I was only thinking of ways to get Eric out of taking the blame for a crime he didn't do.The station was abuzz when I arrived. I searched for Captain Lee or someone else I recognized, spotting Lee across the room speaking into a walkie talkie. I moved quickly towards him, and he stopped talking to address me."Run more tests," I said before I could lose my train of thought. "Of course there would have been Eric's fingerprints on the gun, he's the owner of it. Test to see if the gun has ever been shot. If it hasn't, there's no way it can be him.""We already sent it to the lab for more testing," Lee said."But we still have to keep Eric in
When I woke up the next day I carefully got up away from Nova, covering her with the blanket and trying not to wake her. One of us should get some sleep.I attempted to cover up the dark circles under my eyes with makeup but it didn't help all that much.I knew visiting hours at the police station began at eight and I was up at seven, not knowing what to do with myself.Genevieve was awake too, already sitting at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee when I went downstairs. She turned her head to look at me as I entered the room."It's empty without him here, isn't it?" She asked, her voice soft.I nodded, pouring myself a cup of coffee. For a second I couldn't tell if she was talking about Eric or my father. Both were true. "Yeah…"
I stared at the closed doors to my father's study for a long time. For a moment when I shut my eyes it felt like he could be in there, on a phone call or surfing the web on his computer or flipping through a book.It felt like I could step inside and ask him about his day or offer him help. It felt wrong to want to go in there and snoop among his things for a possible suicide note. The thought sent a shiver through me. The logical part of my brain suspected that it couldn't have been a suicide, not with the circumstances of his death, but the heavily emotional one felt like a hamster running on a wheel-clogged with too many thoughts, too many theories, too many feelings.Captain Lee told me that if I needed to go inside the study I could, but I was to be careful in case they needed to consult the
"… But in the end, there is no life on Earth without the sun. As for Luna." I looked up at Eric, who gazed at me from behind the cold metal bars of his cell. "It ends there." "It just stops?" "Yeah. I can't stop thinking about it. I want to know what he was going to say but I never will." "And why did he just cut off?" "I think…" I took a deep breath. "Maybe someone intercepted him. Took him out before he could do it to himself without ever knowing he planned to commit suicide. They took him out for another reason. I have a feeling." "Who?" "I don't know. My best guess at this point is Killian." Eric chewed on his bottom lip. "I wish I could help more."
I woke up to an empty mattress and an empty house.Sunlight streamed through the bedroom windows, warm and calm.I got up and got dressed, finding a note from Eric on the kitchen counter.'Luna,I went out to the forest early to work on my map. Call me if you need anything. Hope you slept well. Good luck with your aunt Elise today.E.'I took the note and put it in my pocket, wishing I had woken up with him and we had gone to work on the map together. For some reason I dreaded sitting through lunch with Aunt Elise, but I knew I had to go. I put on my jacket and checked my phone, finding messages from both Genevieve and Elise. I was to meet Aunt Elise at a café downtown for a brunch.I walked slowly in the cold. I noticed that the town was slowly c
Tension was heavy between Eric and I, even after we apologized to each other. Eric's words hung hazy in my mind as we walked in silence. Neither of us spoke. Waning sunlight sliced through the treetops, accompanying us. We walked past Eric's house, stopping as he unlocked his front door. "I'll see you later," I said. "I think I'm going to stay at home tonight." He gazed at me for a moment. "Alright." "Call me if you need anything." "Yeah. You too." I walked home alone, part of me foolishly wishing he had asked me to stay with him. The thought was only fleeting as I reminded myself that Eric and I weren't always going to get along. We weren't always going to agree. And the last thing I needed was more trouble between us.
I gathered Eric's journals from my room that evening. A fog had settled over Madison, misty and cold.I sat on my bed with the five journals before me. Three of them were filled completely with blue writing. The first one was about three quarters black ink, and the last quarter was where he had begun writing in blue. The last journal was half blue, half black.Like a bruise. There was something that Eric didn't want me to know and that I was sure of. It felt like a slap to the face. I thought there were no more secrets between us, but I knew something in either the first three quarters of the first journal or the last half of the last journal held something he did not want me to read.It took all of my self-control not to leaf thr
My breath caught in my throat and for a second it felt like I couldn't breathe. I took a step back away from Eric involuntarily. The room felt smaller, hotter. "Genevieve's," I repeated, surprised that I had even been able to find my voice among the shock that rolled through my body in waves. "You know a secret of Genevieve's?" How was it possible that Eric knew more dirt on my family than I did? "To be fair, it's not only Genevieve's," he said. He looked so guilty, so sorry. "It was your father's too. Genevieve and your father's." "You have to tell me," I said. "I can't go and ask Genevieve about it. She's sick and disoriented and I won't be able to get her alone with Elise there." "I can't," Eric said. "Y
I didn’t realize where I was going until I rammed into something -more like someone.- I looked over towards the person I slammed into as I quickly got back onto my feet again. It was Eric and his precious map of his torn in half, I’m assuming due to our collision. It looked like he had seen a ghost for a second before he quickly stood up and stepped towards me. “Luna,” he said breathlessly as he reached out for me to wrap his arms around me. I couldn’t. I chose this path, I couldn’t bring him down along with me. He had already gotten arrested because of his links with my father and my family in general. Even though I just met Eric not that long ago, I already felt so much love toward
~ three months later ~James. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but during the past three months since I’ve been held captive, I’ve found comfort in his words. He didn’t really try so hard to make me his, either.-It was like I saw the James that was underneath all the cockyness, and his rich entitlement.I would often ask about Nova and Eric...and if I was ever going to get out of here or not. He would only reply with how Nova was doing and would completely ignore my questions about Eric and myself leaving this Greenwood castle or not.James told me that Nova has become depressed since I’ve disappeared, and that he&rsq
I didn’t and couldn’t recognize the voice, or think of who that voice could belong to.But it for some reason sounded familiar, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.Before I had the chance to turn around, a cloth was placed over my mouth.I started to struggle to get away, but everything around me started to get hazy. The last thing I remember was James Greenwood’s vintage light blue car pulling up next to me.What was happening?I faded out of consciousness.-
-Three months later-“Do you know this man?” The police officer placed multiple pictures of the same man in various places in Madison.I looked at the pictures, shrugging and shaking my head no.“No, I don’t” I said looking back up at the cop.“Have you seen him around Madison lately?” The middle aged man pressed on.“No, I lived in Madison my whole life, I have not seen or met this man.” I looked at the pictures one more time before sliding them back over to the cop sitting across from me. “ He’s definitely not a local.”Based on the thin line tight lip facial expression, with his eyebrow raised, it didn’t seem like I
“The voices came from the black wood stained house...with the tall slightly dead hedges in the front.” Eric finally told me when he sipped his coffee as we sat in his car in an empty parking lot a few towns away from Madison. He had to stop for coffee, or he would’ve had struggles staying awake.I knew exactly which house he was talking about...that house belongs to Robert Killian. -even though I had complete utter shock painted all over my face as I processed these new findings. I wasn’t actually surprised by this outcome.Eric looked at me with a curious expression across his face, he sipped his coffee silently raising his eyebrows.“That house you just described belongs to Robert Killian.” he nearly choked on his coffee when I shared that information with him.
Nova.Where was Nova? That was the only thing that kept me awake while I lay soaking wet on the ground in a forgotten cemetery, unable to move my body.I prayed that Nova was safe. - not stuck out here, like I was. I’m so stupid.I don’t even know how long I’ve been out here in the storm; It felt like morning should come any minute now, it felt like I was out here for hours and hours. -but it could’ve been just seconds and minutes.I tried to get up, but my body ached so bad. -I knew I’d die out here if I didn’t get up right now.I still chose to get up even though my brain and body was telling me not to. The pins and needles feeling rushe
I could feel the blood pumping through my veins - My heart beated so loud in my ears. I could barely hear my own sobs.I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe what I've just heard.Yet Genevieve's voice was loud and clear even though she was lying ill in front of me.I still couldn't believe what she was admitting to me.All this time. Nine years later. After nine whole years.Genevieve eyes burned holes into my soul and all that I believed during the past nine years. My life was a lie.I was living a life made out of Genevieve's lies, and my father's secrets followed by his dishonesty."Luna, my daughter must not know any of this," she rushed out before she started coughing uncontrollably.
I paced across the room, everything coming together in my mind. Eric stood still, his mouth slightly agape in resonating shock. I tried my best to remember the days and weeks preceding my mother's passing. In my mind everything had been normal-I was ten, my mother wasn't working, my father was still mayor. Every Sunday morning my mother and I went to Corrie's bakery for breakfast. She died in the summer when I didn't have school. Before she got sick I would run up and down the streets of Madison with my childhood friends, feeling invincible. I would walk into the forest at my mother's heels, picking flowers for her. That was only the shiny exterior, I realized. What I saw was a façade. Behind it all was my father's infidelity. Had my mother known the whole time? If she hadn't, did she ever know at all? "Who would have poisoned your
I walked slowly down Main Street, one hand holding my phone to my ear and the other in my pocket. I had left Eric's just after he woke up about an hour after I awoke, and I told him I had to go out. Nova was still asleep. "Hello?" "Hey, Celia," I said, surprised that she had actually picked up so early-it was nearing eight o'clock. "Are you busy?" "Not really," she said. "I'm just about to run some errands for my mom. Is everything okay?" "I need a favor," I said. "It has to do with my father's case." There was a pause and when she spoke Celia's voice was lowered. "Alright…" Celia picked me up in her car. It was odd driving through Madison when my entire life I had just walked
