(Karis's pov) I could not talk back because my mouth was filled with food, and spitting it out would be like I was disrespecting the chef's efforts put into preparing this meal. My mouth was making soft chewing sounds as I munched on the large bite Xander put in my mouth. Xander went ahead to continue eating, and for whatever reason in his head, he didn't let go of my waist. After chewing and swallowing, my mouth was finally free; I asked Xander very politely if he could let me down so that I could eat because my stomach started gurgling after getting a small bite of food. "Ah." Xander signified I should open my mouth. He brought another bite of food for me to eat. At this point, my veins started to pop out, but I still tried my best to keep my anger at bay. I shut my mouth close and shook my head wanting to defy him. What did he take me for a toddler he could feed? "You don't have to feed me, I can feed myself with my hands," I argued. It was getting hard by the seco
(Karis's pov) Later that day the package Bertha promised to send finally arrived. It was a beautiful dinner gown. I was not fond of the colour blue but this gown was something else. Bertha even sent it with matching sapphire jewellery. I pulled out my phone to text Bertha an appreciative message. Now I could go to the gala. At first, it was not my intention to go but after Bertha mentioned that some promising business partners would be attending I changed my mind about not going. My feet made soft sounds against the Polish marble floor as I made my way from the bathroom to the bedroom. The image of Xander buttoning up his jacket was the sight that invited me. He was wearing a dark blue tailor-made designer suit that was well-fitted. "Tch."I clicked my tongue in distaste as I realized that we had accidentally matched up our outfits. "Is that what you are wearing?" I asked him thinking of how I could make him change his choice because the dress Bertha chose could not b
27 (Karis's pov) The drive to the venue was awkward. I was not ready to strike up any conversation with Xander and preferred gazing through the window. I was thinking about what happened tonight in my past life. In that timeline, Xander didn't bother to ask me to go out with him. He said it was because I was not into social gatherings which was not far from the truth but if he had asked me then I would have jumped at the offer. Then I thought he was considerate of my feelings and how socially awkward I was. After my mother died years ago, my grandparents took me away to stay in their countryside estate where I lived until after college. By the time I was back, there was another daughter and wife in my father's house. Dad didn't pay much attention to me and was focused on the company. It was hard for me to integrate into the social circle and Emma has made sure to label me as a countryside bumpkin too. This made it difficult for me to enjoy social gatherings and made
(Karis's pov) The hall was beautifully decorated with everything in it screaming wealth and taste. Everyone here had to be important individuals worth hundreds of millions at least. That was the power of the ' De Marco ' name. Xander's mother held this event every year, as a fundraiser for charity. A lot of people here didn't care about the charity but one thing and that was to show off their wealth and attract the best investors. This was where you would find the creme de la creme of society. That's why Emma was completely stunned by the comment. The dress we were wearing only had one available piece in the market. It was designed by a retired international designer who made it as a gift to his daughter but the design was so marvelous that a princess from a foreign country demanded to have the same design. The designer was hesitant since it was meant to be special for his daughter but after being persuaded over and over by the princess he agreed and made another dre
(Xander's POV) I could not describe how pissed off I was at the sight of Skyler openly flirting with my wife. He always knew how to get on my nerves. My gaze was boring into him. If looks could kill, Skyler would drop dead now. Karis was sensitive enough to read the room. My heart had a sense of comfort when she willingly held my hand because my gaze went to Skyler who claimed to have a way to prove Karis was right. "Then where is this designer you speak of Mr Crest?" Miranda challenged Skyler not knowing she was digging her own grave. The Skyler I knew wouldn't make a headless proclamation, but why was he interested in helping Karis? Since this morning, my mind has been clouded with thoughts about Karis and how she changed. It was hard to point my fingers at what it was, but there was something about her that intrigued me. It was still very annoying when I heard her say over and over again that she didn't care about me and had a lover. Whenever those accursed word
(Karis's pov) I was surprised when Xander stepped in to defend me. It was beyond my imagination he would choose to back me up instead of Emma, but I guess his reputation was more important than his lover. Emma was beyond furious after I told her to beg on her knees. Her pride would never let her do such. "You don't mean that," Emma said trying her best not to sound agitated. "Didn't you say you want me to apologize after you tried to insult me? Get on your knees and I might consider." I gave her a blank look. Her jaw dropped seeing I was dead serious. She might have expected me to easily let her off the hook. This was what she got for trying so desperately to match outfits with my husband. In my past life, I remembered how upset I was when all the gossip blogs and papers carried the news of how magical Emma matched Xander and kept on saying Xander married the wrong sister. It was said they stole the spotlight when they danced together. Back then, I ignored all the go
(Karis's pov) Since it was Xander's money I was planning to use there was no need for me to hold back because he could afford it. "5 million." Emma had the nerve to raise the price. I saw Miranda's jaw at Emma's audacity. "8 million." I raised the bid. Why was everyone against me today? All I wanted was a piece of jewellery made by my late mother. "10 million." Skyler bid with a sly smile. Emma gritted her teeth, maybe her budget was almost close. "12 million." Emma bid and even I was surprised now. "15 million." I did not want to give up now. My eyes glanced at Xander's, whose attention was on his phone, unbothered by anything happening. "30 Million." Skyler declared. How did a jewelry with starting price of 80 thousand get to 30 million? At this point, I even gave up. "How annoying," I whined with a sad pout. My words seemed to have caught Xander's attention because he glanced at me. "30 million is there any other bid aside from the gentleman man in a
(Karis's pov) I was left puzzled by Xander's warning. "What are you thinking of? he is just jealous of Skyler." I said out loud. I was on my seat enjoying a glass of wine. My mood was a bit down and it made me lose interest in socializing. My eyes darted at the hall impressed at how wonderful the decorations were and how everyone was dashing. This was what a gathering of the elite looked like. It didn't seem like a bad idea to sit back and just enjoy the night. "Good evening Mrs De Marco. I hope I am not intruding." A middle-aged lady in her early forties approached me with a soft smile. I dropped my wine glass on the table and signified she should take a seat. It was funny how people preferred standing at parties like this. "Not at all." The lady got my clue and took a seat. "My name is Sapphire Holmes." She introduced herself. "Like Sherlock Holmes." I made a light joke which she laughed at. "Yes, I got that joke a lot while I was still in school during my
(Karis's pov) I could hear my heart beating in my chest from my ears as Skyler inched closer. His breath was a mix of alcohol and mint. I was already tipsy so just imagine the kind of situation I was in. The cold winter breeze blew across us. My hands clenched and before I could evade him in my drunk state. "I want to kiss your lips so badly, Sunny. Would it be a sin if I listened to my inner thoughts this once?" My breath hitched, "Skyler, I can't," even if I was tipsy, I could not kiss him. "Shush, that's enough. It won't be nice to just stop thinking about anything and focus on me." His thumb was rubbing my lips as his dark obsidian eyes drew me in. "Red," I heard someone call from behind and I froze. Skyler's jaw clenched as I shoved him off to look behind. I was nervous like I was just caught cheating by my husband, only that it wasn't my husband but my ex-husband. Xander stood a few steps away from us in a long jacket under the light snow as the breeze blew r
(Karis's pov) Going out with Skyler and Bertha was the best decision I made. Unlike what I had expected, Skyler didn't question me much about the reason I moved to the De Marco estate, nor did he mention it, which I appreciate because I don't want to imagine how Bertha would react if she found out. I had gotten a private room at a karaoke place where there was also BBQ and drinks. It was a fun combo. Loud music was playing in the background while Bertha was singing, and I would not lie. She wasn't exactly the best singer, but it was fun watching her. Skyler and I just laughed at her while enjoying our BBQ and some alcohol, and I think I might have drank a little too much, but I was still sober. "That was fun," Bertha chimed after finishing a song then quickly gulped down some of her beer. "So what did you think of my performance? The great Bertha Rivers." She excitedly said feeling a bit tipsy as she sluggishly sat by my side. "It was perfect," I lied, being a supp
(Karis's pov) Never go for a battle unprepared, that was something everyone knew and I definitely didn't come unprepared. I had more than enough evidence to blackmail Christian. When Lavender informed me this morning about the meeting, I knew he had finally decided to sell the company, so I diligently prepared. It was comical how his beloved daughter was missing, and all he thought about at the moment was how to make a profit. His jaw clenched and he seemed to have grown a few more grey hair. I signalled Lavender, and they brought out some interesting pictures that made his blood pressure spike. Father started coughing seriously and accidentally knocked off a glass cup to the floor. "I don't have all day, so please tell me if you are taking the offer or not. I know you don't want to liquidate." I pushed his buttons further not really bothered by the fact he was coughing his heart out. Dad is meant to be in perfect health so I was sure this was a play to get my pit
(Karis's pov) Last night was etched in my memories. When I tucked Val in bed she asked me if we could truly stay together. I didn't give her an answer knowing it would break her heart. When did Xander get so close to her that he held such a spot? My brows furrowed, and my eyes opened as I glanced to the side drawer where my phone was ringing from. The first thing that caught my attention was the bouquet of fresh roses kept there. It was a different bouquet from yesterday with a small note. I sluggishly sat up to pick up my phone, and the note that read. ' even under the stars, your glow isn't overshadowed. The moon was beautiful. Isn't it?' Oh my God, Xander should give me a break. The moon is beautiful. Isn't it? Was the same as I love you in a Japanese poetic way. Staying close to him is a big risk. The ringing sound of my phone finally drew back my attention. My brows furrowed to see it was Lavender. "Good morning ma'am ..." she greeted me. "Good morni
(Karis's pov) This wasn't how I planned Christmas to be; walking through the door, I immediately spotted Vance and Val playing around. It was a beautiful sight but not as stunning as the full windows display. The part of the roof to the walls was made of glass, and it felt like I was under the sky. It was way different from the last time I was here with Xander. "It's beautiful," I muttered impressed by the stylish decor. I didn't even want to leave here anymore. "I know, it was meant to be your birthday present before things went south. It's four years overdue now." I heard Xander's voice from behind me as he moved to stand by my side. He just kept on trying to infiltrate my boundaries but it would take more than sweet words to mend a broken heart. First I wanted to find the truth about everything. "A fancy pretty cage. Stop talking, sweet words. It feels weird coming from a devil like you." I retorted my gaze going back to Val and Vance. I wondered which other mat
(Xander's pov) It was surprising that Benji was able to get information on the hospital in less than 24 hours. It was pretty assuring how reliable he was. "That's not news; the issue was how they were able to steal the baby," I asked Benji, although I had a good idea. The most possible situation was that Karis was drugged and her memories are hazy about what happened in the labour room. She gave birth to twins but couldn't remember. "The doctor that helped her deliver was found dead this morning. He was assassinated, but from his personal files, I was able to dig up information about how he swapped her medication records during the scan, and originally, they didn't know it was twins because Val was blocking Vance. So the plan then was to give Karis a dead child but it turned out to be twins." The more Benji explained the angrier I got. My fist clenched until my knuckles were white. Emma was rescued yesterday, and a few minutes later, the doctor was found dead.
(Xander's pov) Her hands were wrapped around my shoulders as she straddled my back; at times, I wished I knew what was going through her head. Karis went silent; deep down, I had a feeling that she was probably thinking about running off again. She loved to run, and I do love to chase, but at times, I wished she would stop running from me. I know what happened between Emma and me really fucked up things between us but there was something more than always stood as a barrier between us. I only hope with time I can melt the ice that surrounded her heart. This morning, I was woken up by the twins, Val and Vance, demanding an explanation about everything that happened. Of course, there was only so little I could say to 4 years old, but it seemed my words worked because they were playing little matchmakers. I was glad I got to be close to Val before knowing she was mine it made things easier. The only one I had to win over was Karis for her to open up her heart for the h
(Karis's pov) It feels like I was set up because why was it taking so long to get a butler. "Because you are the devil I hate." I retorted. It was dangerous to stay in the same space as him. "Xander, please, you are invading my personal space..." I want to tell him to let go; I wasn't comfortable in my ex-husband's arms with him holding me this close to him. I felt his heartbeat and his breath was trickling on my skin. His hoarse voice cut me off, a very bad personality trait of his. He never let me finish talking and it was very annoying. "I love your personal space since, unfortunately, I am the devil that loves your sin. I love the sin you committed to having fallen in love with me and gotten married. I will say it a thousand times, Karis: no matter how you run, my arm is the place that will welcome you in the end." My heart skipped a beat; ever since I met Xander again, he felt like a different person. The Xander I knew was not expressive of his feelings b
(Karis's pov) I jolted awake when a mischievous fireball jumped on me, "What's happening!!" I screamed with my heart racing. The next thing I heard was a childish laugh. Valeria was on the duvet laughing at me. It wasn't how I expected to be woken up but it was refreshing to see she was in a good mood. "Merry Christmas, mummy; wake up. It is already 10, and you have been sleeping for so long." she chimed excitedly. "Merry Christmas Angel," I replied with a small smile on my cheeks. "How was your night?" I asked her, stretching out my hands. Oddly, I slept like a baby last night. My insomnia didn't come at me. I slept so long. "It was fine. There is someone I want you to meet." She chimed, then got off the bed, running outside the room. It seemed like she was urging someone to come in. "There is no need to be scared. She isn't scary." I heard Val's little voice. I kind of had an idea of who it was and it only made me nervous. My hands clutched the duvet as I waited. Fin
