Chapter 4

When Giselle turned and saw me, she was startled to the point of almost stumbling.

Jasper quickly stepped over and caught her right in front of me.

"Be careful, Giselle," he said gently.

The tenderness on his face flickered for a moment before he turned to me, his expression cold. "Aurora, are you just going to stand there like a statue?"

I felt my breath catch. I had misunderstood again.

I had assumed he had been waiting for me, but it turned out he had been waiting for Giselle.

If I remembered correctly, Jasper didn't like eating fish. Then again, if Giselle made it, he'd probably enjoy it.

Giselle lightly patted Jasper's arm and said, "Jasper, don't be so harsh. Aurora, I'm sorry. That's just how he is. Do you want to join us for dinner?"

I shook my head, indicating that I had already eaten.

I went upstairs to pack my things. I didn't have much—just a canvas bag.

When I came back downstairs, Giselle was nowhere to be seen. Only Jasper remained, reading a book on the couch
