Chapter 7

I was walking on eggshells, scared that someone would recognize me. I walked into a local boutique, where an elderly woman was sitting. The moment she saw me, she fell to her knees.

Damn it! She knew who I was.

I ran to her and begged her to stand up, and she did. I looked at her closely—it was the seamstress who made my wedding dress. I remembered the day I got married to Lyon. I woke up in tears. That was my first attempt at running away, but I was immediately caught. The wedding was postponed twice because I locked myself in my room. I finally agreed to marry Lyon after he threatened to slit my grandmother’s throat right in front of me. That was when the seamstress came in with my dress. The only reason I smiled that day was because of the beautiful gown she had made and how she kept telling me how beautiful I was.

“Did anyone see you walk in here?” she asked, rushing to bring down the curtains.

I shook my head. Today was oddly quiet. It was as though the universe was in my favor. I hadn’t run into anyone on my way here, just kids playing around.

“Nobody saw me walk in here.” I took a deep breath as she led me to a seat.

“Why did you run away? Don’t you know who Lyon is? He is extremely dangerous… What made you think it was wise to run away like that?” she scolded, but there was concern in her voice.

I saw my grandmother in her. It had to be fate that I ran into her shop. The Moon Goddess was on my side.

“I don’t want you to get into trouble. I want to sell my robe. I need something more common to wear—I need the perfect disguise. The news of my escape has spread like wildfire, and if I keep walking around like this, anyone can recognize me.” I pleaded, but she just stood there, staring at me.

“I cannot buy this robe,” she finally said.

“Why? It’s valuable… made with proper leopard skin.” I was fighting back tears at this point.

“This isn’t a robe to be sold. If it’s found in my boutique, what do you think will become of me? I’m sorry, but I cannot buy that.”

I understood what she was saying. I took off the robe and began submitting every piece of jewelry I had on, leaving only my vow ring. I dropped it, but for some reason, I wanted to hold on to it, so I picked it back up.

“All of this jewelry is made of real stones… You can buy these, right? Please help me… I need to get to my grandma. She’s sick. I need to get to her quickly.” I pleaded on my knees as the tears I had been holding in rushed down.

“You have no contact with her? No mobile device?” she asked.

“No. My district doesn’t use technology yet. Please help me…”

She walked into a room and came back with a black gown, a hat, and a pair of sandals. I was grateful for what she was giving me, but what I had given her was worth more. I had expected more.

“Is this all?” I asked, and she scoffed.

“You should be grateful I’m even buying.”

“I’m sure you can give me more. Please, it’s worth a lot.”

“Well… I need that ring. If you submit it, I can call a carriage to take you to your grandma.”

I stared at her, tears in my eyes. The jewelry I had submitted was worth more than everything she owned in this shop, yet all I got was a dusty dress, a pair of sandals, and a hat. Now she was demanding my vow ring.

“I don’t have anything more to give you. If you want more, you’ll have to submit the ring. If you can’t, leave before someone sees you here,” she said, forcing the bag into my hands.

Before I knew it, she was chasing me out of her store.

I was back outside again, but now in disguise. It wouldn’t be easy for anyone to recognize me with this hat on. Now, I just needed to get to my district before dawn.

I suddenly heard the sound of a truck. It was a local machinery truck, which meant one of two things—it was either heading to my district or the other one because this was the route. The men driving it had stopped to have wine. I noticed the back of the truck. If I could sneak in and hide there, nobody would notice. But first, I needed to be sure they were heading my way.

I immediately thought of an idea.

“Nice truck you’ve got there,” I said, walking closer to the men while examining the vehicle with my eyes.

“Only one percent of truck drivers have these. It’s from the big cities where humans live,” one of them replied.

“Hmmm, I see. Then you should be careful if you’re heading north. There’s been a big pile of cow poop that hasn’t been moved. It could ruin your perfect tires,” I lied, trying to get him to reveal his destination.

“Oh, that’s bad for them. I’m heading west, so it’s not really my problem. One of the small districts Skywood Pack owns.”

Yes! He was going my way.

“Okay then. Have a nice day, and I hope you enjoy your wine.” I waved them off and pretended to walk to the other side of the road.

The moment they looked away, I made my way to the back of the truck and sneaked in. I hid my petite self behind a haystack. At least now I was going home.

Hours had passed, and the truck hadn’t moved. I had even fallen asleep. But soon enough, I heard the men switch on the engine, and we were finally on our way.

No one would believe that the Luna of Skywood Pack was at the back of a random truck, buried in hay and onions, while my husband owned cars imported from the human world.

Speaking of my husband… My mind drifted to Alpha Lyon. I wondered what he was doing right now…
