On the journey back to his house, Jason occupied the rear seat of the car, his fingers drumming on his thigh in a sporadic pattern. His driver looked at him in the mirror, with a cautious expression, as if considering whether to say something.

"Mr. Carter, are you okay?"

Jason continued to stare at the cityscape passing by, his expression unreadable in the flickering light of the streetlights. “Just drive,” he replied, his tone clipped.

The driver silently agreed with his boss's mood and nodded, refraining from speaking further. The car smoothly navigated through the busy city evening traffic as the engine purred softly, yet inside the vehicle, there was a heavy atmosphere of tension.

Jason reclined, blowing air out of his nostrils while gazing at the beams of light outside. Uncontrollable whirls engulfed his thoughts. “What is causing me to constantly dwell on her? About what she’s hiding?” He rubbed his temple, frustration clawing at his composure.

3 cm invasive tumor in situ… Stage 3… Metastasis is present… Kendall’s hands trembled as she read her test result. She swallowed thick lumps of saliva that were about to choke her. “Wh- what does… this mean, doctor?” Her voice was trembling so was her whole body, coupled with her labored breathing. Even though she knew what it meant, she rather lived in denial. “Miss Kendall,” Doctor Sophia took off her glasses and focused on the patient in front of her. “You have stage three cervical cancer.” She dropped the heartbreaking news. “No… I don't… doctor, this is not my result.” Tears rolled down Kendall’s cheeks as she kept on arguing. There was no way that she would accept this result as hers. She only had pain and heavy bleeding… And a few minor symptoms. She was sure that there was a mix-up somewhere. There had to be. “I can't have cancer,” Kendall heaved a sigh. It felt like her whole world was crumbling before her and she was too weak to put the smallest pieces togethe

“How could you?”Alicia was furious as her voice took over the living room. This had to be a joke. She ran down to Kendall’s house after seeing the multiple mixed calls only to be given double strikes; Kendall hadn't only slept with a stranger, but she had already called Doctor Sophia, saying that she was ready for the IVF procedure.“What would I have done?” Kendall wasn't having it. Matter of fact, she was done trying to explain herself."Anything..." "Just not messing around." She shrugged.Kendall hated that she was diagnosed with cancer, and had woken up in bed with a stranger, with the effect of the alcohol wearing off and she felt terrible. Like every other girl, she had the fantasy of a small family and having her babies, not opting for a sperm donor.“I'm sorry for not being by your side at the time you needed me most,” Alicia apologized."You don't have to be." "All that I expect from you, is love, support, and kind words…""That's if you are dealing with so much, and you're

“Anywhere but home.”Jason informed Lucas after getting into the back of his black-tainted car. He was done with work for the day, but for fear of his mother breathing down his throat, he'd rather stay out late.“Alright, sir,” Lucas, his driver responded. He didn't need to think twice, he knew the exact place that his boss frequented when he needed to escape his realities. Slowly, he increased the volume of the music, trying to soothe his boss.“Turn it off.”Jason hissed, tugging on his tie that was suddenly becoming too suffocating.“I'm sorry, sir.”He was already exhausted from today’s hassle, but he had to quickly fix a few meetings for tomorrow. His eyes were glued to his tab the whole time, as he immersed himself in work. The rest of the journey to the club was calm and boring. In about half an hour, they arrived at the spot and Jason went to the bar. They didn't do much security check-up on him."Brandy is fine." He told the bartender who jotted down his order. She had a sizable nude gown that matched her skin tone and a light brush of pink lip gloss. For sixty-one, she defied the number.Jason sipped from his teacup and set it down on a saucer. He knew what his mother had to say and was avoiding the topic by all means possible.“How about we do that when I return from work?”"Then I would be in the salon fixing my hair or getting spar treatment." "We need to talk now."Sealing her point, she stopped by the door, silently telling him that no one would leave the room until they had a discussion. “Get out of my office!”Jason thundered, refraining from throwing off the coffee his supposedly new assistant brought.Kendall was still in shock, just staring, wide-eyes. Her smart mouth had ruined things for her once more.“Why are you still gawking?” "Leave!"“I’m sorry, sir…”"You’re sorry?" "After acting so rude, you're now sorry?" He laughed at her in cheerful mockery. "Would you be sorry if I were a gate man or a random worker..." "Maybe a jobless person like yourself?"Jobless? Kendall pressed her lips in a fine line instead. "He what?”Alicia batted her lids nonstop, confused after listening to Kendall. She was sure her mind had been playing a prank on her.“It just happened…”“Why does everything just keep happening to you lately?”Kendall puffed, knowing Alicia was right. But in this case, it wasn't her fault, and she was also in a desperate position.“Why would a stranger propose to you?”“He didn't, okay?” Kendall corrected her. “He just asked me to act as his mistress for the weekend.”“And then what?”“He shows me to his mother over dinner, and we're good.”Alicia paused, processing all that she said. She found it hard, nearly impossible that a man of such status would go about proposing to random ladies if he didn't have an ulterior motive.“So, what's in it for him?”“I was kinda rude to him, and he knows that I desperately want my job.” Kendall began. “Instead of hiring a girl and paying for her services, he figured he could use me for free… Well, I get to keep my job.” She swiftly added.Suddenl

"Jason has drawn the battle line." Thane was confused. He looked at Clara, his mother, and Mr. William’s mistress. She vehemently tapped her foot on the ground in quick succession, and now, she began to pace about, looking like an angry bird. Jason was his step-brother, and he wasn't a fan of him either, but he figured his mother might be overreacting. Most times, it was like that with her. "My brother?" "What did he do…" “He's not your brother,” Clara rebuked him instantly. She looked so furious like she was willing to set the whole place ablaze if given the chance to. “Point taken,” Thane didn't argue. He had seen Catherine and his mother fight tooth and nail from his birth, so that statement was not up for debate. “What did he do, mother?” He needed to be clear still. “Everything.” Clara sighed loudly. “He brought home a woman,” she laughed wryly. “He wants to drag property with you, he must think he's wise.” “Mum, there's no need to get worked up, she could be anyone, mayb

When he finally opened his door, the heaviness on his chest had transformed into a chilly and unyielding sensation. He threw his tie on the closest chair and collapsed onto the edge of his bed, covering his face with his hands. Memories, arguments, and doubts flooded his mind, each one more overwhelming than the previous. Why is this difficult? Eventually, he was overcome by fatigue. Jason rested against the pillows, his arm casually placed over his face while his breath became calm. The subtle fragrance of her perfume stayed in his thoughts, a poignant indication of what he couldn't understand. In the morning, Jason was rudely awakened by his blaring alarm. He rubbed his eyes, moving slowly and out of sync. The heaviness of the previous night still remained, if anything, it had increased. He hurriedly took a shower, but the chilly water didn't help clear his foggy thoughts. While Jason stood before the mirror fixing his cufflinks, his face showed no emotion, but his reflection re

Jason remained seated in his study, clutching the armrests of his chair tightly, as though desperately grasping his last bit of self-control. Thane’s smug voice echoed relentlessly in his mind. “It’s not your child but mine. Did you ever wonder why she hid so much of her past?” The weight of those words settled over him like a suffocating fog. He had trusted Kendall, despite the hurried nature of their marriage. Had that been his mistake? Jason’s jaw tightened as doubt crept in. “But why? What motive does she have to deceive me in such a way?" He looked over at the intercom that was sitting on his desk. The living room was filled with a gentle evening warmth, Kendall's light laughter mixing with the soft hum of the central air conditioning. Jason relaxed on the sofa, with one arm casually resting on the backrest and a slight smile appearing on his lips. Jason playfully teased, expressing disbelief that she managed to purchase six pairs of shoes in just one afternoon, as he gestured towards the collection of shopping bags at their feet. “Are you planning to open a store or something?” Kendall rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress her grin. “I’ll have you know, Mr. Carter, that all six are essential.” She held up her hand before he could interrupt. “Yes, even the sparkly ones. Don’t judge.” Jason chuckled. “Fine. But don’t blame me when I have to build another closet to fit your essentials.” “You? "Construct a wardrobe?" she joked, raising an eyebrow. The car journey was peaceful, yet not uncomfortable. Jason reclined, casually swiping on his phone as Kendall stared out the window. She slightly angled her head, and her mouth slightly opened in a gentle gasp. "Jason, check this out!" she whispered, her voice filled with unusual enthusiasm. Jason immediately looked up and followed her gaze. A grand fountain came into view, its sparkling water catching the sunlight in mesmerizing arcs. The flowing water appeared to be dancing, while the peaceful garden enhanced the overall charm. "Isn't it lovely?" Kendall remarked, her voice filled with nostalgia. Jason didn’t reply right away, captivated by the look on her face. It wasn’t often he saw her so visibly delighted by something. He tapped the driver’s shoulder. “Stop the car.” The driver pulled over smoothly, and Jason stepped out, walking briskly around to Kendall’s side. He opened the door and reached out his hand. Just as she started walking, Jason's stomach let out a loud growl. Kendall suddenly halted in her steps, turning her head quickly towards him as she chuckled. "Was that... you?" she questioned, disbelief evident in her tone. Jason shyly rubbed the back of his neck, causing his ears to blush slightly. "What else can I say? Shopping takes energy,” he replied, giving her a small grin. Kendall shook her head, still chuckling. “Jason Carter, starving after one hour in a boutique. Who would’ve thought?” "Hey, I never mentioned being famished," he joked, although his stomach rumbled again, proving otherwise. As Jason led Kendall toward the car, the bright morning sun filled the lobby, with her hand securely in his. "Jason," Kendall said with a hint of playfulness in her voice, "I believe I can walk by myself." Jason arched a brow. “Oh, is that so? Because yesterday, you could barely stand without wobbling.” “That was yesterday,” she countered, tilting her head at him. "And I'm still complaining today," Jason responded with a smirk. He held the car door open for her and assisted her as she got in before getting in himself. While the driver placed the bags in the trunk, Kendall smiled and shook her head, with amusement shining in her eyes. Are you aware that you are doing too much? Jason carefully opened the door, trying to make as little noise as possible, and immediately looked at Kendall. She was nestled on her side, breathing evenly, with a calm expression on her face. The warm glow in the room was created by the setting sun filtering through the half-drawn curtains in shades of gold. Jason paused briefly, observing her, feeling his heart grow with an unnamed emotion. "He thought she appeared very calm," his lips formed a slight smile. “After everything today, she deserves this rest.” Still, the persistent concern eating away at the recesses of his thoughts remained relentless. Jason glanced around the room. The partially filled suitcase by the closet grabbed his attention, quietly reminding him of their impending journey. He sighed while pulling up his sleeves. Jason watched as Kendall ate the rest of her lunch with little enthusiasm while sitting by her bedside. The chef had excelled with the spread, but Kendall hardly ate any of it. Jason refrained from commenting, as he didn't want to push too much, but her diminished appetite worried him. She appeared improved from the previous night, yet he couldn't overlook the fragility in her. Her typically lively skin tone appeared pale, and although her eyes stayed friendly, they held a hint of darkness, as if she was concealing something. His phone vibrated on the bedside table, breaking the silence. He glanced at Kendall. “I’ll just take this. Be right back,” he murmured, brushing her hand gently before stepping into the hallway. While he departed, Kendall absentmindedly traced patterns on the blanket with her fingers. After the door closed with a click, she released a quiet breath, a hint of unease appearing on her face.
