Sarah paced back and forth across the darkened apartment, her mind racing after the words Axel had texted. The words on the screen felt cold and detached, more warning than a promise. "Don't keep me waiting." Her fingers hovered over the phone, aching to shoot off another message, something sharp, something to remind Axel that she called the shots here. But she restrained herself. It was wiser to let him think that he held all the cards.

Tomorrow at 3 PM. She would meet him, but this time it just wouldn't be about triplets. No, something was happening that neither of them had expected - these messages, the unknown presence creeping into her life. It gnawed at her, a scratch that she could not itch. Someone watched. Someone knew.

Mulling over what had happened in her head, a feeling she couldn't ignore was that Axel had to have something to do with this. Maybe he didn't send the messages himself, but his involvement in this game had always been more muddled than it initially seemed.

The next morning, Sarah woke up with a pounding headache, still tangled about what had happened the previous night. She hadn't slept much. Of course, how could she, when those cryptic messages scratched up and down at the back of her mind? "You are not the only one playing this game." "Tick tock. Time's running out." The person behind it was playing with her, literally enjoying the squirming of his victim. But Sarah wouldn't back away from a fight. The threat merely firmed her purposely. Today was the day she was going to meet with Axel and find out precisely how much he knew, up to what extent she could trust him, and more importantly, how to keep him in check. She couldn't afford any more unknowns. She lay in bed while staring at the ceiling as the dim light from the window cast long shadows across the room. This weight of a game she was playing weighed heavily upon her chest. This was supposed to be her moment for revenge. But it had felt like someone else was pulling the strings

Sarah's heart raced as she read the message, her fingers tightening around the phone. "Nice try, Sarah. But you're the one who's about to be run over." The cryptic warnings that had come before were disconcerting, but this? This was a bald threat. Whoever was behind this wasn't playing with her anymore; they were making their move. She glanced over at Axel, who was still leaning back in his chair, a smug grin plastered on his face, entirely unaware of the tension occurring inside of her. The pulse beat faster now, but she couldn't let him know how shaken she felt-she was supposed to be in control here. She slowly tucked her phone back into her bag and forced a calm smile. That would be dealt with later. Right now, she needed to keep Axel on board with their plan. If things were about to spiral out of control, she needed him to help her take the triplets down—before she became the target. "So," Sarah said, trying to sound matter-of-fact despite the anxiety gnawing at her gut,

Jasmine stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom while putting on the last touches of her makeup. Her heart fluttered with excitement because Sarah had invited her to some party, a thing she hadn't expected. She didn't know Sarah that well, but that invitation made her special, something that hadn't happened in quite a while. This was all she needed to take her sister's condescending attitude off her mind for at least a few hours since things were getting tenser between them.As Jasmine slid into her dress, she caught her reflection-a bright smile overspreading her face, a sleek black dress hugging her figure to perfection-well, for the first time in a while, genuinely excited; this perhaps was something new, a fresh chance to be out of the constant comparison to Jayla. Finally, here was something that was hers. She snatched up her heels and took the stairs down; her heels lightly clicked against the wood floor. Down the stairs, Jayla stood at the bottom by the living room; Jayla's

The sound of the Screeching tires fell backward onto the curb, Jasmine heart raced in her chest as she could still feel the whoosh of air as the car whizzed past her, missing her by inches. The world blurred around her while her legs began to quake, her adrenaline surging through her veins. It was ghostly silent for just an instant: the city, the soft hum of the night, and the juddering beat of her heart. Jasmine gasped in short breaths as she surveyed what had just happened. Had that car been aiming at her? The lights had seemed to lock right onto her; it was too much of an intended act to have been some sort of accident. Her heart pounded, her hands shaking, clutching her purse tightFrazzledst her chest. Her mind fluttered back, earlier, right before she'd left the house. The tone was icy, almost calculated, with harsh words that still seemed to ring in her ears. And the way she had looked at her-may it be? Was Jayla responsible for that? Is my sister trying to hurt me? Th

It was as if this anonymous message unravelled wittily from her phone while shaking her hand: "I know what you're planning party you are not as clever as you think you're." The words danced before her in a juggling of taunts that dared every shred of control she thought she had over this twisted game. In that one millisecond, the mantle of power that had cloaked her in the bar with Axel slipped away and she was exposed-prey under the considering eye of a hunter. She willed her breathing to steady, reminded herself who she was. Whoever this was, it was his attempt at shaking her, wanted her to falter, to show weakness. Well, she wasn't about to give them that satisfaction. Taking a deep breath, Sarah steadied herself and rubbed out that knot in her chest where the anger and fear were gathering. She'd face that ladanceor now, she had a plan to run with Axel-one that would pit the trithisagainst each other with such ferocity they would never recover. Back at the Mansion Jasmine

Jasmine spent the evening alone in her room, the walls looming ominously over her as if to fall in at any moment and bury her under them. She couldn't get over that scene with Jayla and replayed it over and over in her mind, each word sharper and more cutting than the one before. Her sister's teasing, the smugness with which she dismissed Jasmine's accusations regarding what happened with the car-all these things set her skin crawling. How long had Jayla harboured this kind of malice toward her? Had she been waiting onthe time for the perfect moment to strike? She paced across the room even now and then to glance at hera reflection in the mirror. Shadows circled her eyes, a testament to the sleepless nights she had been pulling lately. Her sister tried to hurt her-no, she knew it. That "accident" just could not have been a coincidence. Jasmine stormed into her room slamming the door behind her. Her breathing was shallow, her hands shaking while holding the note in her death grip. Moving around the room several times, until finally her heart stopped hammering in her chest while her mind was aflame with the words on the paper: "One more step, and you won almost." Her throat was parched, and the thoughts initiated a mad race in her head. Every single encounter that she had had with Jayla replayed itself in her brain like a record with a scratch. Jayla's vibes, the smug expressions, the way it seemed she relished in Jasmine's torment that now made sense. That near miss with the car had not been an accident but deliberate. She had been trying to scare her and keep her away from the house. Why? Is it about Axel?" Jasmine muttered, words jumbled over as quick pacing took over. "She doesn't want me near him… but this? This is too far. She stood dead still, staring into the mirror, her eyes foreign to her own as if

Jasmine stared out of her bedroom window, her pale skin bathed in the soft, silver light of the moon. Axel's words played once more in her head, fanning those glowing embers of ambition inside of her. She had been keeping quiet for far too long, playing nice guys to Jayla and Jasmine, at each other's throats over Axel and everything else from girls' high school track to current weight. But now, the time was close. She smirked again with the thought of Axel reassuring her. He was in on her plan-or so he thought. The little accident with Jasmine had gone off without a hitch, just enough to scare her but not hurt her. Axel was perfect in carrying that part out. Still, Jade knew better than to trust him fully. He was playing some kind of game, and she was going to kno every move he made. She approached her desk, hugging open the drawer in which her small notebook lay in waiting. She flipped through the pages of the notes she had taken-it felt like forever-she wrote down each and every

The next evening, Jayla sat down her cross-legged on her bed, a glass of water in one hand and her phone in the other. The soft hum of the ceiling fan did little for the silence marshaling its forces against her. Her fingers hovered over Axel's contact name. They hadn't spoken since that night party, the drinks, the indistinct memory of his worried face as he hailed her a cab. Her thumb finally pressed "Call." The ringing felt eternal before Axel's voice crackled through the speaker. "Jayla?" Axel sounded surprised. "Hey… it's been a while." Jayla smiled faintly, leaning back against her headboard. Jayla’s chest heaved as she stood frozen in the doorway of Room 408, the sight of Axel slumped on the bed and Jade standing beside him sending white-hot fury coursing through her veins. “Jayla,” Jade purred, her voice mocking as she leaned casually against the bedpost. “I didn’t think you’d show up. Brave of you.” Axel stirred; still groggy, his eyes tried to take better focus. "Jayla, wait.it's not what you think—" "Not what I think?" Jayla crackled her tone as her shaking fists jammed beside her. "You're in bed with her, Axel. Her! After all that we had gone through?" Jade scoffed, each of her words sharp and biting. "Oh, don't be so stunned, Jayla. Probably, if your nose were not constantly up your asshole, then maybe, just maybe you might have seen it coming. The words were gasoline to the fire running rampant inside her body. She strode closer, each step more adamant, her voice going louder. Jade's Hotel Room — Midnight The room was pitch black except for the bleeding light of the city through diaphanous curtains. She sat at the end of a king bed, soft light befalling her face from the phone in her hand, one leg over the other. Lying beside her, Axel was spread across the bed, his shirt unbuttoned, his breathing deep but irregular since the drug she'd slipped into his wine still did its work of keeping him very sluggish and unaware of what was happening around him. A sly smile played upon Jade's red lips, curled as they were hand-flipping the pictures she had managed to click throughout, each frame showing something sensual, well-thought-of with calculation. Her hands were over Axel's chest, rubbing casually across his bearded cheek snaps told it all sans loud words of recognition for proximity. Her gaze shifted to the figure that lay before her, serene and soft-as-a-petal in his sleep. "Time now for the thickening of the plot." She clicked the Messaging app first to

The silence of the house enveloped Axel as he stepped inside, the sweet scent of lavender and vanilla comforting perfume so frail in nature wafting through it. Soft light spilled from the living room, casting warmth against the chill of the emotional vacuum that had filled him.As his eyes acclimatized to the brightness, he saw her there: Audrey. She had been curled on the couch, her body sheathed in one of his immense sweaters from her miniature body, and flowed right down her back, where long red hair gave a cascade when the fuming teacup heated her hands. Then she'd raised her gaze, and now her eyes just met Axel."Ach Axel." She sighed soft,.And before another word could escape his lips, Audrey was pressed against him, her face buried in his chest, her fingers digging into his shirt as though he'd disappear if she loosened her grasp."I thought you weren't coming back," she choked.Axel’s throat tightened as the guilt pressed against his chest like a weight he couldn’t lift off,

Standing just beyond the threshold into Jayla's room, Jasmine felt her breath catch. This was to be the triumphant scene of a recovered Jayla, surrounded by concerned parents and Jade; instead, the weight in her chest grew heavier. She couldn't get past that glimpse of suspicion in her sister's eyes, nor the haunting question: Did she know?Jayla leaned back against her pillows, pale but alert. Her voice was still hoarse, but something in the quiet strength of her tone unnerved Jasmine. "It feels so strange… like someone wanted me gone."Mrs. Johnson hushed her daughter, stroking her hair tenderly. "Don't say such things, darling. It was an accident. Probably something you ate. You're fine now, and that's all that matters."Jayla's lips curled faintly into a smirk, a ghost of her usual confidence. Her sharp gaze shifted briefly toward the doorway to Jasmine and lingered there. "Accidents don't feel this deliberate, Mother."Jasmine's stomach churned violently. She dug her fingers into

Golden sun streams came through the window into the Johnson mansion to bathe the great dining room with its warmth. Three days since the accident had happened, and it is within the atmosphere brought along by such a situation in life. All was well but the surface of each heart seated on hot coals -and burned so much more under Jasmine's skin than any person could imagine. She sat at her vanity, brushing her hair in slow, deliberating strokes while her mind replayed events of the past week: screeching tires, the near miss with the car, and now Jade getting into an accident. The doubt in her mind as to Jayla's involvement in it all was first just a murmur, one she dismissed for paranoia. But now? Now it was a scream she could no longer ignore. The hand closed on the hairbrush in a grip that was almost crushing as the signs turned stark: Jayla had tried to kill her with the "accident" on the street and, failing that, had gone after Jade, tampering with her brakes. In Jasmine's blood, the

Jayla sat cross-legged on the plush velvet couch in the living room of the Johnson mansion, a smirk twisting her lips. The dim light from the antique chandelier above outlined features that were almost sinister. She swirled the wine in her hand absently, as if it was the glass that was the perfect metaphor of the chaos she had unraveled. She leaned back and blew a harsh breath, the thought running like sugar on fire in her head. It was almost too good. Jade lay in the hospital after that near-fatal car accident. She hadn't died-unfortunately-but was shaken enough to keep her off-balance."Not dead yet," Jayla muttered to herself, a hard smile tugging on her lips-" but shaken. That's good enough for now."She was pleased with that image of her sister being helpless, lying in that hospital bed-so meek and weak. The whole neighborhood had thought of Jade for all those years as the "peacemaker"-way too sweet and far too good. But Jayla knew better. Jade does have ambition, and with each p
