Chapter Eight: Decisions and Destinies

Returning to the hospital for my shift felt surreal. As the faces of familiar patients brought me a semblance of normalcy, anticipation ate at me. By the midpoint of my shift, I knew I couldn't delay the unavoidable any longer.

Nicholas' room was at the end of the corridor. I took a deep breath, convincing myself that I could face him, that I could face everything. With trembling fingers, I pushed open the door.

"Nicholas?" I called softly.

He turned to look at me, his piercing gaze unreadable. For a moment, the room suffocated in silence before I cleared my throat and took another step forward.

"I've come to tell you... I'll take the deal," I said, my voice steady despite the churning inside me.

His eyes continued to bore into me, inspecting every minuscule flicker of emotion on my face. Finally, he spoke, "Good. I get discharged tomorrow at 10 am. I expect you to be there."
