Eva paced outside her son's admission room, feeling her heart beating fast in tension. The doctors had been in the room for over half an hour and still no word of how her son was doing.
“Calm down, sweetheart, my little champ is strong, he'll be okay,” Amy said, hugging Eva tightly comforting her. Eva couldn't say anything as she closed her eyes tightly, praying her son would feel better. A thought invaded her mind, making her pull away quickly, her face covered with concern. “Amy, the coffee order… I don't know…” Eva mumbled, feeling confused and at a crossroads. She needed the money, that was undeniable, but she couldn't abandon her child. “Don't let that bother you, you can always call later and explain, or I'll drop it for you while you wait to hear from the doctors…” “Jay Adams’ mother?” A nurse called from behind them, cutting their conversation off. “Yes, that's me, how's my baby doing?” Eva asked in panic, her face full of anticipation. “Your son's awake and stable,” the nurse explained, making Amy sigh in relief. Eva studied the nurse's face properly, something about her statement, making her sense there was a but… “But…” Eva asked, her face full of worry. The nurse smiled lightly as if trying to calm her down before saying, “the doctor wants to talk to you, I'll take you to him, after you see your son of course.” Eva nodded her head, returning her slight smile as they walked into the room. “Hey look who's awake, how are you feeling, my love?” Eva asked, walking to his bedside as she held his hands into hers, kissing them. His tired face and droopy eyes saying there was much to his illness than anyone could merely tell. “Tired Mommy, I feel tired,” he mumbled, his voice weak. “Don't worry the doctor gave you medicine, you'll be okay,” Eva said, her voice almost breaking into sobs. “And look who brought you something to play with, it's your only godmother,” Amy said playfully, making funny gestures at him, earning a slight smile from him. Eva walked into the doctor's office, feeling anxiousness creep into her veins. “Come in Miss Adams, I'm Doc Richmond, I have both good and bad news concerning your son, Jay,” Doc Richmond said as he watched her settle in the seat opposite of him. “Which would you like to hear first?” Doc Richmond asked, looking at her in concern, making Eva feel her stomach get cold. “The bad?…” Eva answered like a question, not sure if she could handle anything extreme. “Well I called you here because your son needs urgent medical attention, he has a rare condition called Aplastic anemia, mainly his body doesn't have enough blood,” the doctor explained, making Eva feel like she was dreaming or delirious. “What? Where did he get it? What can be done?” She asked in panic, her heart beating violently in her chest. “Calm down, Miss Adams, the good news is the condition is treatable, but the other not so good news is he requires blood, and his blood type is extremely rare so we'll need to take tests of every available family member to find his match,” the doctor explained entwining his fingers together. “If none of the family members have his blood type then we'll have to import it,” the doctor continued explaining, the pity in his eyes visible as he saw how confused she was. The doctor's statement had Eva taken aback, as she knew there was no one she could rely on. “It's just me, no family member, just me, and his godmother,” Eva explained, feeling tears sting her face. “Then if that's the case, if you two are not his match, then the blood will have to be imported,” the doctor explained, his voice calm and composed. “And where is the problem with it? Just import the blood and save my son,” Eva said, trying to see the logic in how that was another concern. “Well it's not that easy, for one it's costly, you'll need five hundred thousand dollars to start with, there are other charges that will apply and…” “How much money do I need in total for my son to be well,” Eva asked, feeling her insides shudder and tear apart. She knew she wasn't her son's blood match, and a miracle of Amy being a match couldn't fall on her like manna. “Look, Miss Adams, I want you to first calm down. There are drugs we could use to stabilize him for a month or more, if his condition doesn't change then the procedure is inevitable,” the doctor suggested as he heard the tone of defeat in her voice. Eva's face lit up at the new hope for her son getting better. “How much do the drugs need, doctor?” She asked, knowing it wasn't going to be free of charge. The doctor appeared to be scrolling through his computer for something, making Eva knit her brows. “There's this program going on in the hospital, um… lemme see…” the doctor slurred as he looked carefully on his computer screen. “Well, you're in lack, there's one of our hospital founder who's sponsoring kids with special conditions, the drugs will be fully paid for but your son will have to stay in the hospital for easy monitoring,” the doctor said a smile coming to his face as he saw how relaxed the woman before him became. “Please, tell me what I can do to get my son under this program,” Eva asked, feeling hope flow inside her like lava. “Don't worry, there are a few slots left and under your son's condition he'll get under the program, I'll just need you to sign a few documents to give your consent,” the doctor said, pulling a document from his desk drawer. Eva felt uneasy signing something she didn't know what if she was selling her son off unknowingly? She could risk it, “is it okay if I take it home and go through it?” The doctor nodded his head in agreement, “sure that's totally fine, once you sign it bring it for approval.” “Thank you doctor, thank you so much,” Eva said, shaking the doctor's hand in gratitude. “Amy, are you sure you're going to be fine with him, I'll just drop the order quickly and come back,” Eva asked for the twentieth time as they exited the hospital entrance. “Yes, gal, leave him to me, will you be okay?” Amy asked, looking at her friend in concern. ~~~ Amy double-checked the address as she walked into a tall office building, which looked nothing other than magnificent. The mere sight of it made her wonder if she crossed paths with such a famous man, from his card, it showed he was the CEO. Walking towards the front desk, the lady sitting at the desk looked at her with her bags of coffee as if she were a beggar. “Sorry, did you lose your way in here? This is not a hawking place,” the lady said rudely, standing from her desk. “No, Miss, I'm in the right place, I'm here to deliver coffee to Mr. Ronald,” Eva said confidently looking at the lady. The lady burst out into laughter, looking at her as if she were deranged. “Are you mad or just sick? What makes you think Mr. Ronald wants street coffee in his office? He has coffee machines everywhere, why would he ask a low life to bring him some?” The lady asked, her tone full of scorn. “Well, he asked me to bring him…” “Shut that filthy mouth and get out, or I'll get security to come throw you out!” The lady said ready to push her towards the door. “And what exactly is going on here?” A man asked, walking towards them, if Eva wasn't swift enough to notice she couldn't have noticed how the rude lady bowed her head quickly. “It's nothing sir, I was trying to get her to leave, I think she's in the wrong place,” the lady explained but more politely. “Look sir, I'm not in the wrong place, Mr. Ronald asked me to…” “You're the coffee girl, right?” The man asked, looking at her, his face full of amusement. “Yes, Mr. Ronald…” “Linda, get back to your work I'll escort her upstairs,” the man said, showing her to the elevator. “But sir, I think…” “I don't care what you think, Lizard or whatever your name is, get back to work before I let your boss know how you've been treating clients in this company,” the man bellowed out to the lady, making Eva feel her heart swell in pride. Eva couldn't help but steal a mocking glance at the lady as she was left humiliated, lowering her eyes in shame and jealousy.“Did I fucking stutter! I don't want you or any other woman near me! Freaking traitors! Out!” Ronald said, not even noticing his office door was open with the least expected person at the door staring at him in awe and horror. Eva had never felt such anger emanating from anyone before. His words, rich in hidden meaning, showed just how he considered women. She took steps back in fear as she watched the lady scram out of the room and past them, horrified. The veins protruding from his hands and several on his forehead making her see the obvious fury in his eyes. Their eyes locked, and she could have sworn she noticed his face soften contradicting his words. Something in how his arms appeared as the veins looked strained made her remember a certain night years ago. Something about this man kept drawing her back to remembering the night. The buzzing sounds of the nightclub music were still ringing in his head as he settled in his office. Looking around his office, Ronald couldn’t help but wish he found an assistant soon. There were so many papers unturned but finding a competent and trustworthy person to work with was like finding a needle in a haystack. His phone buzzed revealing the last person he thought would ever reach out after their last stand on. “How may I help the Mighty Charles Foxx?” Ronald asked, his voice full of scorn and bitterness. Silence followed as he heard his brother sharply inhale.“Look Ronny, I know we didn’t come to an understanding the last time you were here but…”“Did you mean to say, you denied taking the mansion from me thinking I wouldn’t find out?” Ronald asked, clenching his fists in anger. “Ronny…”“Don’t call me that, Charles! Only grandpa was entitled to call me that,” Ronald said his voice low in anger. He couldn’t miss the painful twist in his heart as he remembered his grandf
A loud buzzing of the phone broke their enchantment, bringing their minds out of their fantasy moment. Breathless, Eva pulled away her eyes lowered as her heart beat fast in excitement. She never thought she would feel that way after what happened years back. She felt a touch under her chin as Ronald lifted her face to meet his gaze. “Um… I should pick this,” Eva said, trying to steady her voice. Ronald held her hand a little firmer to stop her from moving away. “Be my contract wife, Eva,” he said with no hesitation in his voice. His statement caught her off-guard as she inhaled sharply in shock and surprise. Her eyes widened as she looked at him in disbelief, “wh… what?” “You heard me, I’ll pay you well, I mean you can’t ignore the chemistry between us,” Ronald said boldly. Eva scoffed looking at him in awe, the man before him was prouder than she thought. He didn’t seem to regard women very highly. “You know what, I think I need to leave,” Eva said, not sparing him a look.
As they got into the house, Amy closed the door behind them, ready to interrogate her. She had never seen her like that in all the years they had known each other. “Look sweetie I understand if you don’t want to talk about whate…” “Take me to your job place tonight, I want to work, I could use the extra money,” Eva burbled out, looking at her friend boldly. Amy scoffed looking at her in shock, “gal, what’s gotten into you? Earlier you could never go with me, no matter how many times I tried to incite you, what’s going on, really?” Eva ran her hand through her hair then let them settle on her waist as she paced across the room. How could she even start to explain, and if she did, would it even make sense. “I just need money Asap,” Eva answered, not stopping in her wandering. Amy shrugged her shoulders in defeat, knowing Eva, she always liked to keep to her issues. But one thing she knew is when Eva was ready to talk, she would. “Well, you’re in luck, one of our dancers is absent
“Oh God!” Eva exclaimed looking at the man before her in terror, there was no way this was happening to her. Ronald held her waist firmly as he pulled her to him, he could feel her soft skin under the light clothing she had on. “That’s not fair, God is not here just me love,” Ronald said looking down at her like a desired prize he had won. “Please Ronald, let me go, I don’t want…” “Don’t want what Eva? Me? If it was another man in my stead, I’m sure you would be ready to jump his bones at his signal, right?” Ronald accused still holding her in position. “No, it’s not like that Ronald, it’s …” “It’s what, Eva? I’ve already paid for your services beforehand. I don't think you want to leave just yet,” Ronald interjected, letting her go gently as he noticed her trembling in fear. The last thing he wanted to see was fear in her eyes when she looked at him. Eva breathed out as she watched him sit on the bed away from her. Her brain, screaming at her to take the chance and run, but s
Pacing quickly through the hospital corridors, Eva could be lying if she said she had slept even the slightest. Looking at her phone, she saw the multiple missed calls from Amy and the coffee shop. She pushed the door to the ward room and took another look at her son who slept peacefully all night. Her heavy eyelids protested demanding for rest as she blinked making her rub her eyes continuously. Her mind was still filled with worry from what happened last night. “Mommy?” a small soft voice called getting her attention, she could have sworn she was dreaming when she saw her son smiling at her. “Heey my charming prince, you’re awake early?” Eva said, smiling at him as she moved to his side, embracing her. “How are you feeling?” Eva asked, shuffling his hair playfully. “I’m feeling okay,” Jay answered smiling, though his tone was still a little pale. “That’s good because mommy is going to buy you whatever you want once you get better, okay?” Eva said, kissing his cheek, making him
Ronald couldn’t concentrate on anything they were saying in the meeting as he kept glancing at his wristwatch. He needed to be somewhere else not listening to the same old things he had to hear all his life. His thoughts drifted off to Eva who surprisingly had not come to accept his terms. He had to admit, she was one tough nut to crack if after all he had done, she was not ready to give in yet. As he thought of the little boy he saved, he wished he could have stayed longer to see him. He remembered his front desk receptionist kept telling him of a doctor who kept leaving messages requesting him to call him back. He hadn’t had the time yet, but he intended to stop by the hospital to see the boy and talk to the doctor. “You agree sir…Sir?” his manager’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts only to find all eyes on him. “What…Yeah, you know what, why don’t we all take a break and resume after…” he didn’t get to finish his sentence as the door to the boardroom busted open, everyone’
On arrival at the hospital, Eva hopped out of the car heading for the entrance. The ride to the hospital composed nothing but stealing glances at each other, but none uttered a word. Hurrying through the corridors Eva sighed in relief on seeing Amy in sight. As Amy saw her, she practically ran towards her, her eyes wide in panic. “Eve how are you? What did you do?” Amy asked, looking at her friend in concern. Before Eva could respond Ronald came into sight making Amy stride towards him. “What did you do to her this time, narcist?” Amy called, pointing an accusing finger at him not caring if she was creating a scene in the hospital. “Please Amy calm down, I'll explain everything later,” Eva said, holding her back as she pleaded with her eyes. “I’m sorry for what happened Miss Amy, but that’s all over now,” Ronald explained, smiling at her slightly. Amy scoffed as she moved away from him as she dragged Eva with her. As they reached the ward room they stood as Eva held on to her ha
