Chapter 43

Eva steered through the gates, the mansion looming in front of her through the dark. She hadn't told Shawn she was returning tonight, and she wasn't even quite sure what reception she would get. Moonlight glazed the windows with soft luminescence, but all of the lights inside were off.

Eva put the car in the park and clutched the wheel as she took a deep breath. "It's all right," she whispered to herself, "he's probably just sleeping. No big deal."

She came outside into the cool night, pulling her suitcase along the driveway behind her. Immediately, the stillness enveloped her; night wrapped around her, it seemed, with the heaviness of some unvoiced threat. The sitting room inside was dead quiet; just a dark well of air.

She felt her way cautiously, her fingers brushing the wall for the staircase. Her foot had just touched the first step when a sudden sound made her freeze-a ringing phone. Its shrill tone cut through the silence and sent a shiver of alarm.

Before she could recover fr

“Ava," Shawn said, his voice low, keen, like a blade slid between her ribs. "Tell me exactly what took place between you and Norman in Italy."It came as a bolt from blue to striking lightning in the air around them. Eva's fingers tightened on the spoon over her dessert. She willed her breathing to turn even, but her heart did otherwise. It hammered an uncanny rhythm against her chest."What?" she returned softer than she knew.“You heard me,” Shawn replied, his jaw clenched. The cool calculated expression in his eyes made her blood run cold. “Tell me exactly what happened, and don't you dare lie to me.”She swallowed hard as her mind contorted in ways to try and get herself out of this. Norman's name had been the minefield in their conversations. Shawn hated his cousin, and she knew that he did it with full awareness. Whatever game he was playing, Eva just could not allow it to blow up her carefully constructed facade. She could not allow it to destroy her.“Shawn, I…I really don't k

“Didn’t think you’d have the guts to call me out again after last time,” Norman drawled, spinning the basketball lazily in his hands. The faint squeak of his sneakers against the court echoed in the crisp morning air. His smirk deepened as Shawn approached, his expression as sharp and cold as a winter storm.“Let’s just play,” Shawn replied curtly, already rolling up his sleeves.Norman laughed at that taunting, loud sound that grated upon nerves. "Oh, no, no, it is not just about this game, is it? I know that look on your face, you are deep in thought over something."Shawn's jaw was set, snatching the ball back out of Norman's hands. He commenced dribbling sure while his vision went ahead to the hoop. "Start playing or get out my way."Norman laughed but left Shawn his space. For some minutes, they played in strained silence; the only sound that was heard was that of the bouncing rubber and sometimes that of the swishing net. But Norman could never keep quiet for extended periods.“

Shawn turned his phone and placed it on the desk, willing himself to ignore Norman's text. ‘He's probably playing games to get my attention, like Ava said. There's nothing else to prove, I met Ava as a virgin, and Norman is just being foolish.’ He stood up and walked towards Ava as she stood in front of the mirror in a short and pretty gown, hastily trying to pack her wavy hair in a messy bun. “Why are you staring at me?” She asked without looking in his direction. “You don't want me to take you?" Shawn leaned casually against the wall, but a lot bubbled just below the calm tone, as Eva rummaged through her purse. Finally, she looked up with a polite smile: "Really, Shawn, I'll be fine; I'm going to the mall, and I won't be there that long. Besides, you know you're exhausted after this afternoon; take some rest.”Shawn scrunched his face up, crossing his arms over his chest. "It's getting dark, and I don't want you to go alone."Eva shook her head, the tone light, yet firm. "Shawn

Eva strode down the hallway of the museum with confidence; her heels lightly echoed off the vacant space. Shawn followed her, the sound of his footsteps quiet on the dimly lit hallway.Eva stepped into a gallery room; Shawn hung back just beyond the doorway, peering in. His blood ran cold as Norman leaned casually against one of the display cases, smirking firmly in place."Right on time," Norman drawled; there was a sharp thread of humour laced in his tone.Eva crossed her arms over herself, an instinctive and protective stance. "Cut the theatrics, Norman. What the hell do you think you're doing?"Shawn strained to hear, his fists clenched at his sides.Norman chuckled. The tone was light, laced with menace. "Isn't it obvious? I want Shawn to know the truth about us. Since you are trying to pretend that night never happened.” "There is no 'us,” Eva snapped in a low, fierce voice. "Whatever happened in the past is over. I'm happily married now. Get over it.”Norman's smirk spread wi

"why was the truth so hard to tell?" Shawn muttered, staring at the blinking cursor on his screen. He leaned back into his office chair and ran a hand through his hair. It felt as though there was tangible frustration hanging in the air.He listened to the words that were playing like recording inside his brain in repetition, to the previous night of Ava's cool entrance into the house, placing easy smiles as she unpacked her things and telling that lie with so much confidence and ease. It was too hard to believe and he couldn't help but think about it and feel hurt with every second. "Where were you tonight, Ava?" he asked."I told you, I went to the mall," she said, cool, with nary a crack.Yet, Shawn had known better. He heard everything, saw everything. She was at the museum with Norman, and instead of explaining the truth and making him understand, she lied, again. He slammed his laptop shut and clenched his jaw. "What else did you lie about, Ava?" he whispered out loud. His tru

Norman paced the length of his father's study, his mind racing with every step. While opposite him, he could hear his father, Victor Darlington, speaking in a deep and measured voice. “You’ve been quiet lately, Norman. Too quiet.” Victor leaned back in his leather chair, his hands steepled in front of him, his gaze sharp and calculating. “I haven’t heard any reports of a fallout between Ava and Shawn. What's going on?” His mouth stretched taut, stretching out a slight smirk, but the tension in his gaze pulsed straight into them, and Norman couldn't hide this; thus, his father caught it. He came to a stop in his pacing, turned around to his father, his tone casual yet laced with a touch of aggression. “Father, I’ve been working on it. You’ll get your fallout soon enough. I’ve played my big card already.” Norman’s voice dropped, his eyes glinting with something darker. “Shawn and Ava’s marriage is teetering on the edge. Trust me.” Victor's eyes hardened, and he leaned forward in

"Victor."Henry Darlington's suave, modulated voice cut through the hum of conversation at the exclusive cocktail party. Victor Darlington, in mid-reach toward a fresh glass of bourbon, jerked to a halt before he turned around to a grin that was just one layer over too bright."Henry," Victor answered him in return, false and cordial. "What a surprise. Never thought you'd be here."Henry took another step forward, his suit impeccably tailored, eyes intent on his brother. "I could say the same. Though, I am not surprised to find you sniffing out the same opportunity as myself."Victor laughed softly-a laugh that did little to warm his eyes. "Come now, brother. Let's not be quite so cynical. It's a public affair. Surely, we can manage to get along for one evening without our usual. disputes."Henry's teeth set into a grinding position. "We shall see about that."Before either of them could say more, the voice sliced through. "Ah, here you are, gentlemen!"The remarks of Victor and Henr

Eva sat in her office, playing a pen between her fingers as morning sunlight poured in through big windows, though all at once it seemed to choke her, while immaculate white walls and a desk perfectly aligned got on her nerves. Her mind was again set, wondering how Shawn had left that morning. He had been distant. There was no kiss on her cheek, no teasing remark, not even a casual farewell. She remembered stepping out of the shower, wrapping a towel around herself, and walking into the bedroom to find him already dressed, his tie half-done and his phone pressed to his ear.“I’ll be there in thirty minutes,” he had said into the phone, barely glancing in her direction."Leaving already?" she had asked, forcing a lightness into her voice."Busy day."And with that, he'd grabbed his briefcase and was out the door, leaving her standing there, a bead of water trailing down her temple.Eva let out a loud, quivering breath and shook her head. “He's busy, that's all,” Eva told herself for th

“Lets see what you are up to, Ava.” Ryan said under his breath, hands on the steering wheel as his eyes dart merrily between the rearview mirror and the restaurant across the road. The engine of his car idled gently, its low hum hardly noticeable over the thrashing in his chest. Almost an hour had passed since he had been sitting there, his head turned on Ava, who was inside the café stirring her unattended coffee. His phone buzzed on the passenger seat, and he grabbed it quickly. It was a message from Shawn. Shawn: "Keep your eyes on her; we must figure out where she's taking that money to.”Ryan exhaled, his jaw tightened. He thought relentlessly, typing back a brief response. Ryan: "I'm still watching. She hasn't made a move yet." He set the phone down and tapped his fingers nervously on the top of the steering wheel. Two half-million-dollar withdrawals, and she's merely sipping coffee? It didn't seem right. There's something up.Ava rose from the chair moments later, her chai

Shawn's voice was quiet but fraught with stress as he slumped on the mahogany desk, his jaw clenched with each word;"Are you quite certain about this, Ryan? ".His fingers drummed on the polished surface of the table, a perturbed beat that exposed his anxiety as he sat across from him. “I wouldn't have not come to you if I wasn't. Ava is hiding something, I've been investigating and watching her myself.” Shawn's eyebrows furrowed tightly. The poorly lit study gave them privacy, its thick drapes shutting out the rest of the world, but it did little to relax the weight bearing on Shawn. “You're claiming she poisoned Eva, Ryan. I still can't believe Ava would do that. Even Eva doesn't believe it. Because Ava has no reason to do that.” Ryan let out a nasty sigh, anger rippling across him. "I know you both are finding it hard to believe, but according to Eva's testimony, she is our only suspect.Ryan narrowed his eyes at Shawn, who looked disturbed. “Eva told me she overheard Ava's conve

Ava murmured over the phone, voice chilly and indifferent, "I can't come today either."Shawn's exasperated voice came over the speaker to say, "Ava, what's going on? You keep giving excuses not to come home. Talk to me if something is bothering you.”"Shawn, I'm not giving excuses. I have a lot of work to do and my parents' place is the closest, because I've been working late these days. Please try to understand. " Ava hung up without waiting for his response and flung her phone onto her disorganized desk. The setting sun had long gone down, so Wadsleys Jewels were gently aglow from the office lights. Scattered about Ava's desk were financial records and client files, but none of them really had her attention. She was off, trapped in a hurricane of anxiety and stress. Trying to relieve the increasing headache, she rubbed her temples. She didn't bother to check when her phone buzzed again. She already knew it was Shawn.Eva and her mother had also been trying to talk to her, but th

"Miss Wadsley, you must tell us everything you remember. It will be very useful for the investigation.” Detective Harris' voice cut through the heavy tension of the hospital room. Eva moved a little on the hospital bed, and the sterile sheet felt rigid and itchy against her skin. Eleanor Wadsley, her mother, sat on the edge of Evas bed with Eva hand clenched in hers like a lifeline. Richard Wadsley paced like an anguished lion across the room, anger seeping from every powerful stomp crashing across the ceramic floor. Shawn was standing stiffly in the corner beside Ryan, with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes fixed on Eva's pallid face, his jaw was clenched, and the muscles twitched gently. Every moment of her silence only appeared to drive the cyclone building beyond his chilling eyes. Ryan squirmed next to him, rubbing his neck back and forth; his irritation practically evident throughout the questioning. "Miss Wadsley," Detective Harris said with a firm but gentle

Apart from the faint beep of the heart monitor, the hospital room was eerily quiet. Sitting in the chair next Eva's bed, Shawn watched her weak body resting against the white hospital sheets his fingers interlocked. Though the steady rise and fall of her chest comforted him, it did not lighten the suffocating weight of emotions he felt. He had been sitting there for hours, waiting for her to wake up, waiting for a solution. The doctor had told him that she'll regain consciousness soon. Eleanor had left a few moments ago telling him that she had to make food for Eva when she woke up. She thanked him for staying beside her. He was lost in the memories of the past they shared together, the betrayal, lies and the pain of their divorce. The news of her pregnancy was the shock of it all. Resting his elbows on his knees, he sighed deeply and his fingers twitched. Since Ryan laid everything out, his head has been spinning with questions. ‘Why didn't she tell me?’He ought to have realized

Ava's eyes were filled with fury as she walked completely into the apartment; she still couldn't believe what was before her eyes. Startled by the unexpected interruption, Samantha jumped from the sofa. It was irritation rather than fear that swished over her face; she knew Ava would come screaming at her door, sooner or later. Ava took a deep breath. “What is Norman Darlington doing here?” Her eyes returned to Samantha, mock screaming on her like a tidal wave. "Sam, I asked what is going on here?” Crossing her legs and sitting back against the couch, Samantha smirked. "I was wondering how long it would take you to solve it.” She said smoothly.Ava clenches her fists. "You have been working together?” Samantha breathed out deeply, head tilted. “Why else would he be here? Quit asking obvious questions Ava, you look stupid.” A wave of sickness swept Ava. She trusted Samantha. They've been best friends since middle school. Samantha made her believe she was helping her and was the o

Shawn drove behind his parent's car as they drove into the parking space of their mansion. He knew his father was trying to keep his cool and not cause a scene in front of the Wadsleys when they almost lost their daughter. His father went in without waiting for him. Shawn took a deep breath before walking in to face his father. “Shawn, what in the world is happening? What was all that?” Henry Darlington asked with barely contained anger. Shawn tried to speak and calm his father down, but unfortunately, he had no words. He understood what his father felt, but he also felt the same way and didn't understand the mess he just got into. His thoughts replayed the doctor's words and Ryan's words. ‘Eva was truly pregnant, and it was his.And now his father is paranoid and angry about the fact that both twins are pregnant with his child. Shawn shrugged wearily. How exactly was he supposed to deal with this? He thought finding Eva unconscious in her office was worse until the doctor co

With clenched fists, Shawn strolled the space by the window. He wasn't saying much, he just wanted Eva to regain consciousness. She still has a lot to answer for, but the memories of how he found her almost lifeless on the floor made his heart sink. Ava went to sit and was stiff in the chair, hands shaking and rolled into fists in her lap. Ryan stood with his back against the wall, his mask like face dull, but the jaw clenched spoke volumes. Richard Wadsley and Eleanor Wadsley were seated together, their distorted heads twisted with horror and fury. Daine Darlington and Henry Darlington sat quietly, their red eyes flicking every which way. Eleanor shot from the chair, her voice quivering on the razor's ranks, "Doctor, what's the update now. How's my daughter?” Richard's deep voice asked, "Is she awake?" The doctor scanned the room. "Are you all the patient's family?” Shawn glared. "Why does any of this matter? Tell us what happened to her.” The doctor stopped and then gave a no
