Chapter 112

The night was so still that the only sound heard were Eva's fleeing footsteps on cold, concrete pavement. Her heels clicked onto the sidewalk but weren't in perfect rhythm; her body was trembling. Her eyes blurred into tears, trying her best to keep in balance.

"I lost him; I lost everything. " she whispered into the silence of the night.

By the time Eva finally arrived at her parents' mansion, she was tear-blotted, with messed-up hair and mascara streaked down both sides of her cheeks. She was still at the steps to the large house entrance when she faltered, almost flinching as shaking fingers made ringing on the chime echo like cold wind through a silent house. Finally, the huge door groaned to open, presenting her mom, Eleanor Wadsley, draped in silk.

"Eva? What are you doing here at this time?" Eleanor's voice shook in confusion and alarm. She looked her up and down, her mouth parted in alarm. "Good heavens, child, what happened?"

She didn't say a thing but threw herself, sobbing,

"That son of a bitch!" Richard Wadsley thundered, slinging his briefcase onto the nearest couch. "A complete and utter snake!"Eleanor Wadsley bustled out in a flutter over her husband's sudden entrance from the kitchen, clutching a dishrag in her hand. "Richard? You're back so soon? I thought the trip with Henry was to last for two weeks."He had been pacing the length of the sitting room, like some caged lion; his fists kept clenching and unclenching at his sides. "It was supposed to, but that backstabber made sure to screw it all up." Suddenly he stopped and then turned, his anger and weariness twisting at Helen. “Can you imagine what that so-called friend of mine did?"Richard, stop," Eleanor soothed, making her way over toward him. "Come and let us sit down, talk it over. I am sure that it must be some form of misunderstanding. Henry has ever been-""A misunderstanding?" Richard exploded. His voice drowned out Eleanor's as he continued to yell. "Eleanor, he tried to sabotage our

"Mr. Shawn," Madam Tess broke the heavy silence in the living room, her voice cautious yet insistent. "You have barely touched your food since morning. This isn't good for you."Shawn Darlington slouched on the couch, his hair disheveled and shirt crumpled as if he had not changed into a new one in days. His unnervingly bright eyes stared at nothing in particular, his empty whiskey glass poised to slip from his dangling hand. The room was dark save the dim light of the television, its sound muted yet seemingly playing over and over the same headline that had haunted him since it broke: "Business Tycoon Shawn Darlington Gets Duped by the Wadsley Twins."His jaw clenched, and in a hoarse, low tone, he growled, "I'm not hungry, Madam Tess. Leave me be."But Madam Tess did not bat an eyelid. She clasped her hands tight in front of her apron, her face clouded in a thick mask of concern. "Sir, I understand you're upset, but shutting yourself up like this won't solve anything.”"Upset?" Shaw

"Why are you here, Ava?" Shawn's cold, clipped voice finally broke the darkness of the silent living room as he stared at the woman standing in his view. His muscles were tautly coiled as though his fists clenched at his sides held him in a restraint from heaving something or somebody out of his house.Ava fidgeted from foot to foot, and suddenly her eyes were brimming in readiness for all manner of untoward moisture. "Shawn, just please," she ventured softly, shaking at first. "I came to explain what really happened, since I actually wasn't trying to make the matter worse.”"The truth?" Shawn mocked, almost bitter. He moved a step closer to her, his form towering above her. "You are several months too late for that, Ava. You should have said the truth before you and your sister decided to make a fool out of me.""I didn't-" Ava tried saying, but Shawn cut her off.“Save it." His voice cut, the void within him laced with venom. "I don't want to hear another excuse or another lie or an

"Damn it." Shawn cursed under his breath, clenching tightly onto the steering wheel as he drove down the deserted road leading to his parents' mansion. His father's voice still echoed in his head from the call-cold, commanding, full of anger. when he uses that tone, things are definitely not looking good.Shawn's eyes squinted down. He wondered why he was so angry. Was it the news about his entanglement with the twins? Or was it something else? He wasn't supposed to be back from his business trip with Richard wadsley until next week. Suddenly, he felt a settling in his chest, exhaled with jerk.He shook with frustration by the time he pulled into the mansion, parking the car and stepping out, running a hand through his hair as he went inside. The moment he came in, his mother Diane Darlington was hurrying toward him with her sharp eyes that devoured his features.“Oh, my poor boy… “she whispered, full of concern. She cupped his face, stroking over his cheek. "You look miserable, Shawn

"Would it have gone otherwise if I told him sooner?”Eva spoke no louder than a whisper, words falling into the room like heavy fog. Sitting on the couch, drawing one knee to her chest, her fingers fidgeted nervously, twitching and twisting in material of the silk throw pillow in front of her. The delicate sunlight creeping through the grand window panes at the Wadsley mansion barely warmed the chill of dread pooling in her chest. Her mother, Eleanor, dropped softly into her seat beside Eva. Leaning forward, she tucked in a stray bit of Eva's dark hair into the hairclip behind the ear. A sympathetic yet very motherly-firm glance greeted Eva's eyes soft with the statement: "He'd still have been hurt, sweetheart. But he'd at least have heard it from you and not through your sister in that degrading manner.”Eva shivered with her breathing. "So either way, I would have been doomed."Her mum struggled to get the words: "You have made a mistake, Eva; instead of drowning in your guilty fee

It's been a week since the divorce between Shawn and “Ava” was finalized, and the news of Henry Darlington filing a lawsuit against the Wadsley family was spreading like wildfire. Two powerful business allies are at war because of their children. As the media believed. "Mr. Wadsley! Is it true that your daughters hoodwinked Shawn Darlington into marrying the wrong twin.""Did you devise the trick, or are you ignorant about what Eva Wadsley had planned?""How would you counter Henry Darlington's lawsuit filed against your family?"The questions came like hailstones, one after another, as the reporters flocked around the mansion of Wadsley right up to the walls. Cameras clicked on the main gates lined up; above them, yelling journalists wanted nothing but Richard Wadsley.Inside, Richard stood by the window, his fists clenched as he stared out to the circus outside. His face was clouded now by anger. This weight of humiliation fell upon his chest. He was a powerful man of dignity. He

The sound of high heels clattering against the marble floor of Shawn Darlington's office was enough to yank him out from the mountainous piles of papers in front of him. He didn't look up. Already exhausted from all he had trudged through relating to the news explosion about the suit, the last thing he wanted was any interruption.“I don't have time for this," he grumbled, turning a page in the contract he was working on. "Whatever it is, schedule an appointment."The steps ceased and paused for a moment. Then, a voice cut through the silence. all soft, all gentle, but with the burden that stiffened his body in place."We need to talk, Shawn."His hold on the pen tightened. His teeth clenched. That voice. Ava or Eva. He couldn't tell who it was. Slowly, he raised his head.“Eva?” She closed her eyes in frustration before opening them again. “Its Ava. Ryan forced through the doors of Shawn's office without bothering to knock. His jaw was set in a line of urgency, his head a whirlwind of possibilities. The dim light inside the office cast shadows on Shawn's face, who sat behind his desk with his expression filled with controlled fury. The door slammed into the wall but shattered no portion of his stubborn fury. His fingers drummed slowly and deliberate over the fine polished wood. Ryan's pale blue eyes sparkled. "You said something about an emergency," he said, entering and closing the door. "What is it?” His voice was a little coarse and impatient Shawn exhaled, the weight of it coming down hard as it laid on his chest. He did not even look at Ryan, but instead allowed his eye to track the line of the desk in an attempt to put some sort of control on the anger in him. His tightened on the edge of the desk, and his knuckles whitened."Ava knows something.” Ryan's eyebrows sprang. "Knows something about what?"Shawn's head jerked

Ava shoved Shawn's brown front door wide open and took a deep breath, waiting there as the door creaked shut behind her. The day's activities hung heavy on her shoulders like a damp cape. And she couldn't wait to relax and have a good night's sleep. She walked in expecting to see Madam Tess all over the kitchen, but the house was quiet. It was at this time tonight that Madam Tess would be cleaning the kitchen and also preparing Shawn's study for his arrival from work. Her hand rested on the chill of the console table as she placed her handbag down. The reflex wasn't comforting. A cold, shivery scuttering feeling crawled down her spine as though someone was standing behind her, watching her.And she saw him.Shawn was at the bottom of the stairs, lit by the faint light of the hallway chandelier. One hand was in his sweatpants pocket, the other clumsily holding a tumbler of amber liquor. His eyes, which met hers, were dark and impenetrable.Ava's heart skipped a beat. She swallowed.

Chapter 166: Betrayal UncoveredThe blood-curdling, ear-splitting alarm ripped the air in Shawn Darlington's office, widened at the sight of the bug alarm wailing close to his desk. He shot Logan a furious look, their eyes that groaned with agony as he went on sweeping stuff off his desk, clearing space one-piece at a time.“There's a bug on my desk? Scan them all, one by one" Shawn commanded, his voice cracking. "We have to get that son of a bitch bug.”Logan rampaged through the desk, pens, folders, a glass frame shattered into pieces but there was nothing in it. The scanner kept roaring like a rabid animal.Shawn's hands were clenched into tight fists. He'd been thinking just how his cousin got all his ideas, but now he had proof. There has been a bug in his office all along, on his desk for that matter. Every plan, every conversation, every confidential meeting and information was being listened to.Logan removed the desk lamp. The beeping became more urgent.Shawn's teeth pressed

"This doesn't make sense at all, and I can't seem to figure it out." Shawn paced, his dad's office, jaw muscle twitching with frustration.Henry Darlington, leaned forward placing his elbows on his table and tapped fingers on the wood, “Figure out what?”Shawn stopped and frowned. "Norman. How did he know about my exact presentation? Only somebody who is in this office would know anything. It has happened before when he gave my exact idea during the investors meeting, and I thought it was just a coincidence." His fists were tight. "But this isn't any coincidence, it was just too accurate. Either we have some kind of mole who works for the corporation, or…”Henry reclined and fixed his son with a cold gaze. "Or perhaps someone is eavesdropping on all your conversations and feeding it to him.”Shawn breathed in a bitter lungful of air, running his hand through his hair. "That's the only thing. When I'm talking about something confidential here, Norman and Uncle victor seem to miraculou

Chapter 164Those nights were cold when Richard Wadsley would emerge from the mansion and out onto the balcony to gaze out across into the darkness beyond the immaculate grounds. His mind reeled, his head racing with visions of the firm, with spinning losses, and a spinning sense of everything running completely amok. The sound of footsteps brought him out of his reverie . He turned to see Eva approaching the balcony, face calm but strained."You wanted to see me, Dad?" she asked, approaching him.Richard's heart leaped, fists clenching on the railing as he turned around."Yes," he answered, poison dripping from his lips. "I can no longer entrust things into my sister's hands. The cost is becoming too much, and with every one of my attempts that I try to fix or find out what the problem is, another one comes up," he continued "Your sister is running the company on losses and If we continue this way , we would end up in bankruptcy.”Eva shrugged, pulling her arms across her chest. Chapter 163Shawn Darlington walked into the conference room, his keen eyes taking in the oval table where members of the board had already gathered. At the head of the far end sat his grandfather, Mr Jonathan Darlington, his countenance as cryptic as always. On his left was Norman Darlington, his business rival cousin, sporting a sneering smirk that Shawn annoyed. His father Victor Darlington was sitting beside him with a smug expression on his face.Shawn clenched his teeth and spun on his cufflinks, a seething rage boiling under a polished control. Years before, he had learned never to be candid, not in a situation like this."I'm sorry for keeping you all waiting, " Shawn said casually, sitting down beside his father."I just needed to make sure everything was perfect.”Norman snorted at the back of his throat, sneering at his dad. "Perfect, huh?" We'll see."“Shall we begin?” Jonathan raised his brows at Shawn.Shawn nodded and stepped to the side and forward, glancing over at hi

Chapter 162:Shawn gripped the steering wheel in his fists as he drove through the streets with his mind racing. A seething anger was hidden behind the tightness of his jaw muscles. What was Ava up to? How far has she gone? Now that Ryan and Eva had brought her inconsistency of behavior to his notice, now it was glaringly clear Ava was caught up in something that would possibly affect them all. That she was in his study late last night rummaging through filled him more and more with suspicion. Was she searching for records? Cash? Evidence? Or concealing evidence of a crime? The thought tormented him. How could she let someone blackmail her into hurting and sabotaging her family? What could they possibly have on her? What is she hiding? Desperation now appeared to be the driving force behind her and propelling her toward the brink. His fists pounded the steering wheel in annoyance, if those speculations proved to be correct. And if she'd poisoned Eva under pressure, the circumstances w

His eyes flickered upon Eva, who sat next to him with clasped hands. He was aware of the storm of feelings building inside of her.He breathed out forcefully, rubbing his palm on his face. “I don’t know man.”Eva's turned to Shawn with a concerned look. “She's carrying your child, you can't leave her alone.” “You mean the one that she tricked me into?” The irritation was heavy in his tone.Ryan shook his head, sneered. "Exactly, she played dirty first, so why not. She should suffer the consequences of her actions. And besides, she abandoned you first and only wanted to claim you back because she got jealous of how happy Eva was with you.” Shawn clenched his jaw. Shawn cupped Eva's cheek and said with a dry voice "Eva, Please dont push me away.”Eva's breath hitched. Her tears flowed freely as she gazed into his passionate, tormented eyes, her heart pounding against her ribs. She couldn't bring herself to say anything, instead, she grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down into another kiss, desperate, and filled with every suppressed feeling she had hidden deep inside. She could taste her tears on their lips.
