Chapter 102

"They think they can control me" Ava growled low in her throat, pacing the small hotel room. Her heels clicked against the floor, her anger simmering, threatening to boil over at any moment. She came to a stop, hands clenching on the edge of the desk in front of her. Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror over it, green eyes wild with frustration and hurt.

And in Ava's head, those words re-echoed in her mind in an endless feedback-the words deeply engraving in her mind one word after another.

"You're a disappointment. You dragged the family name in the mud. You've done enough damage.”

She snorted, her voice thick with resentful arguments so bitter. "I've done enough damage? Really?" Ava shook her head, the laugh that finally came out seemingly cutting her throat. "Eva stole everything from me, and I am the one that's done enough damage?

It was injustice, seared in fire, and she found no room for reason. She hunched backward into her chair, shaking, her hands covering her fa

"Ma'am, are you all right? You've been staring at that screen for ten minutes now," Amelia, one of her employees who brought a report to her office, ventured to ask warmly.Blinking a few times, Eva forced a bright smile onto her face as she quickly minimized the open blank document on her computer that she had seemed to be working on. "I'm fine," she said, but her tone wasn’t convincing. And dismissed her.She was not okay. The storm brewing in her mind for the last couple of days crashed on her ceaselessly. Every time she met Shawn's gaze, her gut roiled with overwhelming guilt and hurt seriously gnawing at her insides. He had slept with her sister, cheated on her without realising, and she couldn't do anything. Her hands had formed into fists under the desk. “It wasn't his fault,” she reminded herself for what must have been the hundredth time. “He didn't know. He couldn't have known.”But that didn't make it one whit easier to bear.Eva thought of the weekend: Shawn had seemed ful

Just as Shawn and Eva sat in the living room, chatting over their evening tea, the doorbell jingled. Their attention went to the main entrance as the sound came up. Madam Tess, ambled toward answering the door grumbling discontentedly with the uninvited guest. Eva's heart leaped high-she had been uptight all day, waiting for Ava's next move. She tightened her grip on the teacup while her stomach churned. “Who could this be at this hour? Are you expecting someone?”"Relax," Shawn said, chuckling at her rigid pose. "It's probably a deliveryman; someone must have sent something.” Then they heard the door open and Madam Tess's voice full of surprise: "Oh! Miss Eva, what a lovely surprise."Eva's blood froze. She put down her tea on the table, trembling; that rattling sound very loud against the stillness of the room. ‘What's she doing here?’Shawn's head jolted, a brilliant smile lighting up his face. "Eva? Really?"No sooner were the words off his lips than Ava appeared in the doorway

"Ready for another tiring day, Mrs. Darlington?" Shawn teased, opening the car door for Eva, a wide grin on his face.Eva forced a small, weak smile and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Do i have a choice.” She replied in a tired tone. She stepped out of the car, holding her purse close to her side. The air was cool that morning, though the weight inside her chest had her feeling constricted. About to return to Shawn's cheerful banter, she suddenly froze.Ava leaned against her car casually, that bright smile of hers blazing like a spotlight toward them as she stood in the parking lot."Good morning!" Ava called cheerfully, her voice as sweet as sugar as she sauntered toward them.Eva's heart quickened as she found herself clutching at her purse. ‘What is she doing here?’"Eva!" Shawn exclaimed, still blind to any of the tension between the women."Good morning. Good to see you.”"Good morning, Shawn," Ava said with her eyes dancing momentarily onto Eva. "And good morning t

Ava Wadsley leaned back in her sleek leather office chair; her fingers tap-danced a rhythmic beat against the mahogany desk as her eyes scanned the drab deluge of emails surging into her inbox. Outside her office, the incessant buzz of action was cozy humming in the background, reminding her that this was indeed an empire burgeoning. She glanced at her sister's empty desk and shifted her gaze to the wall clock before picking up her phone to dial Eva's contact. It rang twice before she answered. "Eva," she said pleasantly, honey oozing in a voice sweet enough to get on her sister's nerves. "Why haven't you shown up to the office today? You have responsibilities, you know. There was a moment of pause, followed by the sound of a soft sigh. "I'm not feeling well, Ava. I won't be coming in today."Ava hunched forward as her lips curled in an arc of sly mockery, her fingers spinning her gold-plated pen between them. The wheels in her brain were working. "Sick? You seemed fine all this week

"How much longer can I keep living this lie?" Eva whispered, shaking, staring at the pregnancy report that lay on the coffee table. The words "Three weeks pregnant" stared at her like a neon sign, burning through her thoughts and piercing her already fragile composure. Her heart pounded without rest, with every beat a reminder of the fleeting time. She let herself sink deeper into the couch, her lower lip caught between her teeth as she felt the beginnings of tears spring. "Shawn deserves the truth," she whispered, clutching the report as if it were both her lifeline and her downfall. "He has to hear it from me,not Ava.”The thought of Ava telling him made her stomach turn. Her twin had turned merciless, a manipulator of the highest order, and Eva knew Ava wouldn't think twice about twisting the story to her advantage. She would spin it, play the victim, and make Eva out to be some kind of conniving fraud. She grasped the report firmly in her clasping fingers as her mind whirled furi

"Shawn, there's something I need to—" His phone boomed loudly across the dresser right between them. "Wait a minute," Shawn rushed to say and then scanned across the screen. "I'm sorry, I need to take this. It's my father" He cast her a sorry look then headed out through the door. Eva opened her mouth to protest, but nothing came out. All she could do was nod as he vanished from the room, leaving her standing there with her thoughts. That moment stirred deep in her chest. Her hand hovered across her stomach, shaking to the beat of her heart-a quiet reminder of what was at stake. And the resolve crumbled, telling Shawn an insurmountable mountain. The screams of her mind wanted to make her follow him, demand his attention, and just bare it all. But fear proved to be a contrary opponent as it kept her glued to the floor. Maybe later. Once the call is done. I’ll try again then, she assured herself, sitting on the edge of the bed, clutching the hem of her dress. The minutes ticked on

Ava continued with her speech and spoke professionally to the crowd, who were obviously confused about who the real Ava Wadsley was. Shawn's jaw clenched as he stood beside Eva. His attention was on Ava, who was standing with confidence on that stage, talking so effortlessly. There was a constant hum of guests present around them, growing louder and louder as whispers whirled like a tempest."Shawn," Eva whispered, and all was said from her trembling voice to her digging fingers in his arm. "She obviously prepared to give the speech in my place, that's why she didn't tell me about the speech.” The furrowing of Shawn's eyebrows turned to her. "Why would she be speaking on your behalf when you are here? It doesn't make sense.” "She probably thought that I wasn't going to come. I mean, I wasn't feeling well, and the invitation last-minute," Eva stuttered, trying to get the words out as her heart ran a marathon while her mind juggled, trying to redeem the situation. “You have got to be insane! " Eva hissed, pulling Ava into a narrow, private room off the side of the hallway. Her hands were shaking, yet her grasp on Ava's wrist firm. When the door closed behind them Eva released Ava, turning towards her where her chest started to heave as shallow panicked breathing began to take over. "What were you thinking?Do you have any idea what you just did out there?”Ava was smiling, casual as could be, leaning against the wall as if she hadn't taken so much as a scratch in all that mayhem out there. "What I did, Eva, was remind everyone who Ava Wadsley really is. Or did you honestly think you could keep up the charade of being me forever?”That look sent waves of hot anger and hurt surging through her, and she stepped right towards her twin sister. "Pretending? I wasn't pretending to be you! I was helping you! You ran away, Ava! You left it all behind, and I stepped in to fix the mess you made!”Ava laughed; the sound was hard in the small room. The Wadsley’s mansion was filled with tension. Shawn entered the room, his piercing eyes surveying those already seated in front of him at the table in a row down the long mahogany. His father, Henry Darlington sat opposite Richard Wadsley, who presided at the head of the table, tapping fingers on the wood in a deliberate rhythm, face with an impassive mask, and Ryan Wadsley leaned back in his chair, arms folded, and nodded to greet shawn.“I'm sorry for keeping you all waiting.” he bowed before settling down and didn’t waste any seconds before speaking. "We don’t have much time." His voice cut through the stifling silence. "Uncle Victor and Norman have been one step ahead of us for so long. That ends now."Henry's expression was resolute. "We already know all their plans. With Edward's recording, we've got Victor's confession. But that will never be enough. We need more evidence to expose them publicly in front of your grandfather.”Richard's teeth were firmly gritted. "My name and

Darlington's mansion loomed over him as Shawn grasped the steering wheel with hands tightly clenched, his mind thinking a mile a minute per second. He never imagined that he would find himself here today, but with everything that had just transpired in seconds ago, he had more pressing things to attend to. All he had to do was learn. The instant he drove into the driveway, he cut off the motor and stepped out, teeth gritted in a granite smile. Air was nearly as cold as ice as he strode up to the front door.A servant flung the door wide open for him before he would have gotten there on his own two pounding feet. "Welcome home, Mr. Darlington." The maid greeted with a smile on her face.Shawn tried to greet back with a smile, but he wasn’t in the mood and he couldn’t fake it."Where's my father?" he asked immediately. Her expression changed at his cold demeanour. She could instantly tell that he was in a bad mood."Your father is in his study," She said.Shawn remained silent. He st

The ride home was silent as Ryan drove Ava home in her carAva's knuckles were whitening as her fist clenched on her laps. She could hear the sound of her heartbeat as she thought about what she was going to face when she got home.Ryan gripped tightly on the steering wheel, jaws clenched in a hard line. He was furious and seething, but beneath the anger was something else. He was supposed to be angry and yelling at her, but all he felt was pity for her.She could feel it also, she hated being treated like that- being vulnerable and pitied but that was the only thing she could hold on to now."Are you ready?" Ryan finally said, rolling up in front of the Wadsley house. The house loomed above, the lights flickered through the windows but not stopping the storm raging in Ava's brain. Her head was spinning, she let out in a soft tone "No." She shivered, her voice quivering. "But do I have a choice?”Ryan sighed and relaxed back into his seat. "You always have a choice in every decision,

There was heavy tension in the room, as Shawn's burning gaze was focused on Ava. His eyes sucked the air out of her lungs, and she stood stil with a wide eye, trembling in fear with her fist clenched on both sides."What the bloody hell are you doing here with Norman?" Shawn's tone sliced the air like a sharp blade.Ava flinched at his voice, and she stepped back, still trembling. "I—I can explain," she whispered.Shawn's face went cold. "You better have a good explanation for this."Ava's knees wobbled under her. She didn't know how much he heard or where to start her explanation from. "I didn't mean to do any of it, Shawn." she moved closer to him with tears in her eyes, hoping it would make him pity her. "I was used and manipulated by them. I swear– I would never betray you on purpose. Please believe me.”“Used and manipulated?" Shawn let out a bitter chuckle."That's your excuse?"Ava's heart crushed. He didn’t believe her. "I was scared! I was trapped and didn't know what to do.

Ava wiped her tears and shot a glare at samantha. “You knew about this too?”"Oh, come on, Ava," Samantha teased. "Don't be stupid now. We were business partners. I had no idea about your secret one night stand. I became partners with Norman after your father threatened to ruin my career, because he wanted to protect his beloved family reputation.”Ava went pale and her head spun. She thought samantha really cared about her when she advised her and helped her to get shawn back, but she had came to her with ulterior motives, and Norman was behind her all along. "You joined hands with Norman to hurt me. I've done nothing to deserve this from you, Sam.” She said with tears pouring down her eyes.Norman stepped closer, with a firm expression. “Don't play the victim here, Ava. You did everything you did for yourself. It was for your own selfish needs.”Ava wiped her tears and shot him a death glare "What are you saying?""Don't play dumb with us," Samantha cut in, "Yes, it was part of my

It was already dark when Ava stepped out of her car. The secluded building stood at the outskirts of the area and she had to walk there. Her grip tightened on the big bag she was holding as she got to the door. She took a deep breath and looked over her shoulder one more time before twisting the door handle. The creak of the open door pushed the bitter scent of scorched cement and motor oil back into her nostrils. Samatha leaned her shoulders against a pile of crates, crossed arms, pursed lips curled into a crazed smile as she saw her. Norman Darlington, however, was sitting in a comfortably broken-in leather armchair in the far corner, whiskey sloshing back and forth between his fingers. A whirlwind of excitement churned in his head as Ava walked toward him.She did not even bat an eyelid. She raised the bag she was holding and slammed it on the table in front of Norman. "There," she spat. "There's the money you both asked for. Now stop this madness before my dad's company goes ban

Henry Darlington was on his phone in his home office when he received a message from one of his clients, Edward Langstone. It was a voice message, and he wondered what was in it. He stopped what he was doing and played the message. There were murmurs of far-off voices, glass clinking, and soft music playing a party, then a familiar voice came in. "Richard Wadsley and Henry Darlington thought they were unstoppable and everyone else, or at least wished they were. They were just emotional fools. I sabotaged their business deal to ruin it in their faces, and they did not even know it was a sabotage. After all those years of friendship and partnership, it was so easy to break them apart. Without the support of each other, they are as good as weak, but my main target was Henry, I only wanted to remove Richard from the picture. “Wow, that's brilliant.” Another voice came in. “So how's the result going?” He chuckled. “Trust me, it's going great. Darlington Enterprises hanging by his fing

Ryan forced through the doors of Shawn's office without bothering to knock. His jaw was set in a line of urgency, his head a whirlwind of possibilities. The dim light inside the office cast shadows on Shawn's face, who sat behind his desk with his expression filled with controlled fury. The door slammed into the wall but shattered no portion of his stubborn fury. His fingers drummed slowly and deliberate over the fine polished wood. Ryan's pale blue eyes sparkled. "You said something about an emergency," he said, entering and closing the door. "What is it?” His voice was a little coarse and impatient Shawn exhaled, the weight of it coming down hard as it laid on his chest. He did not even look at Ryan, but instead allowed his eye to track the line of the desk in an attempt to put some sort of control on the anger in him. His tightened on the edge of the desk, and his knuckles whitened."Ava knows something.” Ryan's eyebrows sprang. "Knows something about what?"Shawn's head jerked

Ava shoved Shawn's brown front door wide open and took a deep breath, waiting there as the door creaked shut behind her. The day's activities hung heavy on her shoulders like a damp cape. And she couldn't wait to relax and have a good night's sleep. She walked in expecting to see Madam Tess all over the kitchen, but the house was quiet. It was at this time tonight that Madam Tess would be cleaning the kitchen and also preparing Shawn's study for his arrival from work. Her hand rested on the chill of the console table as she placed her handbag down. The reflex wasn't comforting. A cold, shivery scuttering feeling crawled down her spine as though someone was standing behind her, watching her.And she saw him.Shawn was at the bottom of the stairs, lit by the faint light of the hallway chandelier. One hand was in his sweatpants pocket, the other clumsily holding a tumbler of amber liquor. His eyes, which met hers, were dark and impenetrable.Ava's heart skipped a beat. She swallowed.
