Alpha Lucas pov:

Suddenly I watched as the smile slowly faded from her eyes. Then she turned her back to me.

"Emma?" I called, but she didn't reply me. I felt fear spring up in my chest as she stood from the bed and wrapped the bed covers around her bare chest. Then she turned to face me.

"This was a mistake," she murmured, and I felt my world crashing around my ears. I stood from our shared bed and moved towards her.

"What do you mean?" I asked. "This is the best day I've had in a long time. Seeing you again has—"

She flinched as I raised my hand to caress her cheek, and my hope plummeted.

"No, Lucas." She whispered. "I shouldn't have come here. I'm betrothed to another, and—"

"Please don't mention his name." I cut her off, my voice rough even to my own ears. "Hearing about your betrothal and marriage to another man was the last straw that broke me. What was worse was the fact that he...Kingsley, had delivered the invitation letter personally. It was like rubbing salt on an already
