Avery’s POV

I stood there, trying to decipher the true meaning behind his statement. Was he genuinely trying to protect me in his own twisted way, or was this just another layer of manipulation? The coldness in his voice, the intensity in his gaze—it was hard to tell if there was any sincerity behind his threats.

His words were a warning, that much was clear. But was there a desperate plea hidden beneath his harsh exterior, or was he simply reinforcing his control over me? The fear of giving his father and brother any reason to intervene seemed to hint at a deeper motive, yet his delivery was so devoid of warmth that it was impossible to fully believe he cared about my well-being.

The flicker of something in his eyes—fear, perhaps—left me questioning his true intentions. Was he afraid of losing control, of being forced into actions he might regret? Or was he simply ensuring that I remained compliant, a pawn in his game of power?

Avery’s POVOnly ten minutes had passed in silence, the only sounds being the gentle clinks of cutlery against plates. Then I felt it—someone at the table was staring hard directly at me. Though my eyes were glued to the floor in front of my feet, I could feel the weight of the gaze settle right in the pit of my stomach. And it wasn’t Liam; I was certain of that.“So, your punishment is turning her into your slave? How is that working so far?” the Alpha King asked in a gruff voice, his words cutting through the silence like a knife. My heart clenched at being the main topic of conversation. The humiliation washed over me in waves, but I kept my eyes down, willing myself to stay calm.I heard Liam respond evenly, “She’s adapting. It’s a process.”The Alpha King grunted, clearly not entirely satisfied. “A process, huh? Well, I hope she proves to be worth the trouble.”My cheeks burned with a mix of anger and embarrassment, but I remained rooted to my spot, my eyes fixed on the floor. I c

Avery’s POVThe silence settled back into the dining room like a heavy fog, as if nothing had just happened. The three of them continued to eat, unbothered, while I struggled to detach myself from the agony, from what was surely just the first of many painful moments to come in this place.Coming here was the worst mistake of my life—worse than trusting Nathan and agreeing to marry him, worse than leaving Liam three years ago. Pushing it open, the familiar sight of his expansive, cluttered desk greeted me, a fortress of paperwork and old leather. There, casting a long shadow in the dim light, stood Andrew, my half-brother, ever the silent sentinel by our father's side.I positioned myself before the desk, the silence hanging heavy as I awaited the inevitable onslaught. My father's eyes, sharp and scrutinizing, bore into me for a torturous few seconds before his voice, dripping with disdain, shattered the quiet. “Did you apologize to her for your cruel father’s actions? Promised to protect her and heal her wounds? Begged for forgiveness?”I met his gaze with a defiant scowl, ice forming in my veins. “Of course not,” I retorted, the words laced with bitterness. She would ne

I clenched my teeth, a futile attempt to barricade the sharp pain that streaked through me like lightning. Her eyes, filled with unshed tears, met mine apologetically. "Almost done, I’m so sorry if I’m hurting you," she murmured, her voice cracking with emotion.I let out a weak scoff, the sound more air than defiance. "You’re not the one who should be apologizing, Olive," I managed to say, my voice thick with the effort of holding back tears.I caught the hesitation in her eyes, the slight tension as she paused, biting her lip. I could sense she was holding back words, probably the urge to remind me that some of this was on me—that had I just kept my head down, refrained from challenging them through staying quiet when asked a question or for saying the wrong answer, maybe I wouldn't be sitting her
