CHAPTER ONE

SERAFINA

Dead silent, just like a graveyard.

And the main reason for that choking silence was the thick tension that existed in this meeting room; the tension was so whole, you could almost slice it with a knife.

The meeting was supposed to have started two hours ago, but they were waiting for the final guest to arrive. Nobody had said anything for the past two hours; they just sat on their seats and you could practically see it written all over their faces that they were trembling deeply within.

The Five Great Kings had gathered around for an impromptu meeting due to the never–ending attacks from the Lycans and Wolves. Ever since they got their freedom and were set free from the bondage chains of the humans, they've been getting back at us, hard and brutally.

Occasionally, their gazes would swivel to the empty chair at the table, the one reserved for whoever they were waiting for. With every look they took at that chair, you could see their apparent fright skyrocketing heights and you could feel the strangulating tension tripling.

And there was only one question on my mind…

Who the hell was this person who could nonchalantly keep five Great Kings waiting and have them shaking like a two-year-old about to take a needle shot while waiting for his arrival?

I just sat there clueless. I didn't quite understand what I was doing here; meetings like this were discreet and highly reserved for ONLY The Five Great Kings. Even their first sons weren't allowed to be present.

But here I am, the princess of Alserafina, present at a meeting for powerful Kings. My father, the King of Alserafina, had mandated I come with him to this meeting for reasons he has strongly refused to disclose to me.

Curiosity took another deep bite into my flesh and I leaned in, whispering into my father's ear, "Father, why am I here again?" I was asking for the umpteenth time.

It was the Lycan and wolves' third attack in two weeks. They would attack with the might of their cruelty and a lot of bloodsheds would follow. They would show no mercy, ruthlessly slaining the men and abducting the women and children as slaves.

I was supposed to be back at the Kingdom, helping in whatever way I could by helping the victims of the last attack, which was just two days ago.

My father looked at me, I could see all shades of worry creased on his forehead. "Not the time, Serafina. Please, be quiet."

I nodded and dismissed the subject. I was given a speech that lasted a million–and–one minute by my father on how I should be primly behaved at this gathering and not speak, at all, until I was asked to. Regardless, it's hard to keep your mouth shut when you're at a place you're not supposed to be at by all standings.

My thoughts were driven to a complete halt when the sound of the door being opened had intercepted, and everyone's heads turned in that direction. The instant fear that gripped me was nearly crippling.

I quickly acted in urgency and rose from my seat, about to sprint out of this room, jump out of the window, vanish, whatever it would take me to get away from what had just walked in through the door.

It was one of them. They were here.

Not only me, but the five Kings too had fear written in all its bold intimidated letters expressed on their faces. Despite that, they weren't running away for some reason, and neither did the soldiers in the room attack who just walked in. My father had even halted me, by grabbing my hand and sitting me down.

Saying he was huge wasn't accurately encompassing how big the man who just walked in was. I didn't need a soothsayer to reveal to me that he was a Lycan, a higher one than the Lycans that attacked us—they were brawny and big, but the man that just walked in was way larger.

He looked beastly and dangerous, he had a ferocious glint in his eyes and a sinister scowl that made my nerves vibrate with sheer fright.

He was in Royal regalia, accompanied by two of his soldiers. Advancing towards us with a thread that spoke dominating authority, the intimidation it caused was enough to make me tremble. I had never seen a man as large and menacing as he was, I gawked at him in awe and fright.

What was even more confusing was that I found him oddly familiar.

The previous tension evaporated at his entrance, and a new chilly sensation took over, marring my skin with goosebumps. He gave no form of acknowledgement to the noblemen already seated and he just sat down on the reserved seat.

His cold gaze settled on me and I flinched, instantly panicking and feeling so small under his threading gaze. I swallowed down nothing in nervousness and felt my heartbeat thumping hard against my ribcage. Then, his eyes left me and he faced the King. I could feel my heart again, and I let out a silent sigh of relief.

"I have no problem with ceasing our attacks on your people, provided the condition I had given in our last meeting has been met." The Lycan stated curtly. He didn't have to raise his voice, yet you could still feel hostility etched in his tone.

My brows furrowed, had the kings met with this Lycan before today? How come I'm just knowing about this? I turned to my father, he had his full attention invested in the Lycan and what he was saying so I looked away; I had so many questions to ask my father.

"Speaking on behalf of the Five Great Kingdoms, we have unanimously agreed to give you our riches. The five kingdoms would give you a large share of our wealth. Also, Alserafina is a natural resources treasure, we have so many rare diamonds and crystal stones worth a whole lot—they're priceless. You can have as many as you want, any you'd like." My father offered and the rest of the Kinga nodded, agreeing to it.

"No. That wasn't the condition I laid out. Unless that is fulfilled, my people and I will continue to attack until the whole human race is wiped off." The Lycan sternly refuted and the Kings looked at each other, you could tell their apprehension had just increased. I've never seen my dad this restless and fidgety.

Again, the Lycan's eyes centered on me and it was like everything about me stopped momentarily. I froze. Then I started to melt within, the fiery appeal of his scrutinizing gaze seeped in and I was paralyzed with fear again.

"Please. Please, I beg you. I don't think I can offer you what you want—" The Lycan now glared at my father and I saw how fright gripped him. Clearing his throat, he corrected, "What I mean is that, your condition is a really tough one to fulfill and I…I can't." I heard my father's voice crack at the end and he bowed his head down—it was his behavior whenever he didn't want us to see his weakness, he would simply hide his face.

I looked at the Lycan, what was it that he wanted that was far greater than the riches of the Five Great Kingdoms?

The silence returned for a moment, and when nothing was said, the Lycan got up from the seat and looked at each of us, his gaze lingered on me for much longer and then he spoke.

"Since you all are adamant about fulfilling my requirements, I hope you have enough graveyards." The Lycan said tersely and I gasped, looking at my father again.

"Dad, do something." I whispered to him.

My father looked up at me and said nothing, I could see a hard resolve forming in his eyes but I couldn't place what it was about. I was confused. He turned to the Lycan, who was already on his way out.

"Wait!" My father yelled and the Lycan paused.

"What?"

My father turned to look at me and exhaled in surrender, a downcast expression took over his features.

"Serafina, I'm sorry. You won't be coming back home to the Kingdom with me. Instead, you'll be leaving…with him."

My whole world crumbled.

CHAPTER TWOSERAFINA I took a moment to digest the hard–to–swallow pill my father had forced down my throat. But I choked on it, unable to process it as it made absolutely no sense to me. I couldn't believe my ears, it was like I was hearing things, and I really hoped I was. I chuckled sardonically, "You're joking father, aren't you?" I looked to him, expecting a confirmation but he stared at me apologetically and that's when I knew he was being really serious. "Serafina dear, just do it for the Kingdom." He said to me, like it was just a simple thing to do, like it was a simple walk to the stream, like it was writing the alphabet. But in a real sense, I'm going to be slaves to wolves!"What are you saying, father?" I questioned, rising up from my seat. My eyes scanned the rest of the Kings, they seemed unfazed with the literal fact that my father just offered to sell me off to a beast! They were in support of it, they knew about this, they've been planning this for only god kno

CHAPTER THREESERAFINA "Are you crazy, Serafina? What are you talking about? How can you boldly tell me that you've decided to relinquish your title as a Princess so you can be a slave to that feral beast?" Prince Arie blasted, directing all the anger at me like I was the one who made the decision on my own accord. Prince Arie. The man I’ve been betrothed to before I was even old enough to understand I was born of royal blood and betrothals were part of the inevitable things that came with it. Our union has been planned for a long time. I simply can't back out even though it was a loveless union. By now, I was supposed to be married to him; our marriage has been scheduled five times and we've had to shift the date because the constant Lycan attacks made it impossible to plan a wedding. It would also be quite insensitive to do something like that at a crucial time like this when your people are dying. I don't love Prince Arie, I can't overemphasize this enough, but my father

SERAFINA I watched as my royal crown shattered on the floor. With it went my title, my dignity, my pride and everything I stood for as a princess or rather, used to stand for. It all still felt like a bad dream and I held onto that feeling, hoping this would be in fact, a nightmare that I would soon wake from but no, the the nearly–strangulating feel of the collar around my neck and the bitter taste of shame and disgrace that sat on my tongue were too factual and overly real to be a nightmare. It was a reality. My reality. The end of a rope being sharply lashed on my back jolted me out of my thoughts and left behind a sting on my skin. It’s wicked stroke sent me reeling, and I lost balance on my knees and fell to the ground. I let out a shrill outcry of pain and I craned my head upward and amidst the fog of tears that laid in my eyes, I saw his tall figure tower above me, a sinister glare in his eyes that was enough to kill and the whip in his hand. SERAFINA The cold splashes of water hitting my face drew me out of the dark abyss I was previously in and my eyes batted open. Guess death wasn’t even ready to take me yet. Before I could comprehend anything else, I felt another painful tug gripping my hair and pulling me up to my feet, I let out a pained yelp as the roots of my scalp ached at the action. I was face to face with those domineering and unfeeling eyes of his and a lump formed in my throat as apprehension and fear surged in my veins from being under that intentful gaze. “We have arrived.” Zahir said to me and those three words travelled deep down and settled distraughtly in my chest, rumbling around and creating an unsettled feeling. He went on to loosen my leash from the carriage and held it in his hand, yanking and pulling me forward like I was a bought cattle. I followed after him, my eyes wandering about the perimeter and I realized that I was at the Town Square and the people of the Kingdom stared at m

ZAHIR The door to the throne room opened and she stepped in, high and mighty with her majestic strides and poise. Hera Castilione, my mistress and chief trainer of the human slaves. Hera was a werewolf and should be among the other people of the kingdom under my leadership but I have kept her around for years after our escape from the humans. She was one of the few wolves who were lucky enough to escape slavery when the humans first invaded our world. One would think she had no right to hate them so much since she didn’t go through the same thing most of us did but knowing the deep and intense secret rooted in the darkest parts of her mind, she was entitled to every bit of the hatred that came from her. And she was mine. Her darkness complimented mine so well. I made sure she was clothed in the best apparels, expensive silk and sequins and a bountiful of golden ornaments and jewelry. "Your highness. I came as soon as I heard the news of the arrival of the human princess." Hera st

SERAFINA Hera Castilione, I have heard about her, the Lycan King's famous mistress. A magnificent beauty with a contrasting attitude; proud, devious and sly. Ornate jewelry adorned her flowy brown hair, just as a severe hatred and envy for me evilly adorned her unfeeling heart. It was clearly written over her, the acute jealousy she harbored for me. The fact that I refused to let down my poise as a princess, the fact that even amidst my bloodied body, injured skin and tattered clothes, my carriage never faded or wavered. It angered her deeply, and that was an off–putting indication that she would make my stay here even more hellish than it ought to be. It didn’t matter that she was clothed in gold and silk. I knew where she stood in her world. Her lips curled downward into a displeased frown, her eyes staring at me with severe intent. SERAFINA A violent tug on my hair woke me up the next day and I let out a screeching yelp. My tired eyes immediately sprang open and I saw that it was Hera, standing beside where I laid, arms clipped to her side and her siren eyes narrowed furiously at me. “And why are you still asleep? Get up you filthy slave!” Her tongue was like an edged sword, and whenever she spoke it seemed like every word was accompanied with a venomous fury. I quickly got up on my feet—I was tired and exhausted, still starved and had barely slept last night.. The day hadn’t even started to break yet. I could tell from the darkness that still loomed outside the open window high up in the room. The window was set up so high for a lot of reasons and preventing a slave escaping through it had to be at the top of the list. Even if anyone made it up there, it was too small for a human body to fit in. This place was nothing but a prison. “I’m sorry, I overslept.” I answered to somewhat soothe her anger

SERAFINA On the top of the weirdest yet dangerous things I have ever set my eyes on, Zahir’s Lycan form standing in all its ferocious and dangerously menacing appeal at the entrance of the hall sat there in it’s number one spot. His form was unsightly and feral, its mere stance stained my skin with goosebumps and ignited my nerves with fear, it was like none I’ve ever seen before. “So Steven was right? Someone else has the effrontery to lay hands on my own personal property— a property reserved for the King?” The raucousness of his voice reverberated even deep in my bones. His teeth were bared to heighten his maliciousness and his eyes glowed a dangerous shade of red. And for the past moments, I had been the focus of those ruthlessly illuminated eyes but now, they had found a new target. The perverted man has been on his knees during the entirety of Zahir’s presence in the room; a man whose face had been creased with a smirk all these while, now had eyes that glinted with

ZAHIR It was still dusk and the first morning light was yet to appear. The silence was deafening and I was sure that if I screamed, my voice was going to ring around the whole of Lycaronia. I was relieved. So relieved that everyone was able to escape. I had watched Serafina leave with King Zach and Dahlia in the carriage, not calming down until I got information that they were out of the boundaries. It was just me. Even Steven had left with the others. I had ridden him with the duty of taking care of everything until my return, if it ever happened. But I knew I had to end this once and for all so I stayed back and waited for the Prince to arrive. He was going to meet the shock of his life. I mounted my horse and rode to the eastern part of the boundary as King Zach instructed. According to him, he was going to be coming in through that direction. So I waited on my horse, rage boiling through me when I heard the sound of heavy hooves beating and drawing close to the b

ZAHIR. Several men were stationed in different parts of the border. In less than an hour, the human army had filled the whole place, coming with horses, chariots and carriages. They all helped in informing people. They went from house to house, warning the people about an impending attack while the others helped in the evacuation. Some families left with their vehicles while some were helped into carriages and transported to different Kingdoms. It was safer that way. This went on for several hours nonstop but this didn't eradicate the panic that filled my soul. I remained restless, making enquiries on how things were going on functional posts. I was assured not to worry by Steven. "Where are they being evacuated to though?" Steven asked when he returned from his inspector to give me details of what was happening. "They would have to stay in the Kingdoms for the main time. It's the only option we have because Aries is probably on his way here. We can't risk him finding

If anyone told me two surprises couldn't coexist, I could easily debunk their statement with these scenarios happening before me. As soon as he set eyes on Serafina, his lips trembled as tears filled his eyes. He moved towards her, his arms spread out to wrap her in a hug but I stretched out my hand, stopping him as he made a move. "How dare you?" I asked, my voice in a low rumble. "What are you doing here? How did you get into my Kingdom?" My eyes narrowed on him. He raised both of his hands in surrender, his expression giving nothing away. "I mean no harm. I am here with good intentions." "Then state it." I gritted out, ignoring Serafina who stood beside me, moving from one side to the other. "I am here to warn you about something," He continued, then his eyes darted towards Serafina. "I am sure she know

Turning, I began to walk out of the pier towards the sandy beaches. I was finally back to my mother and this time, I wanted to remain here for good. I wanted to be with my mother. I was done going through all the pain and suffering and didn't want to go back anymore. Being here, right where my mother was, mattered the most to me and I was glad to finally make my way back here. I caught sight of her. She was still dressed in the same clothing. She was gathering sticks to make a fire and when she caught sight of me coming towards her, they dropped to the ground and she straightened. I stopped before her with a teary smile on my face and she pulled me into a hug. We remained in silence until she pulled away and wiped the tears off my cheek. It was equivalent to inflicting pain on myself but I was unable to stop myself, unable to stop this pain in my chest. Hell, I was far more miserable than she was, beating myself up each time I inflicted pain on her. But there was nothing I could do about it. I was long gone. Things had gone awry in a space of a few days since finding her rummaging my things. I had sent her out in anger and so much hurt. Hell, I had expected her to say something to pacify me at least. Something she really meant and not some stupid fucking apology. Then I thought she had escaped from the palace, unable to take more from me. It had put me through so much panic. I knew how I had searched for her while beating myself up for putting her through a lot only for her to coke running back to me herself. My anger had returned, only intensifying when I caught a whiff of an all too famili

HERA. Thunk! Sweat dropped from my brows as I kept cutting wood with a heavy ax. Well, it wasn't so heavy but with how I had moved from a position where maids were at my beck and call, this was a fucking downgrade. But that didn't really matter right now. Not even the splinter that pierced through the other surface of my skin. I pulled it out and continued to split wood, sweat pouring down my back. Once I was done, I gathered the wood in my arm and took it to the furnace where I usually cooked, dropping them all to the floor and looking down at my palm. With every passing day, it was a countdown to the tone Zahir would tire of Serafina and come back to me. Very soon, I was going to be out of this terrible place and in his arms once again. Hours ago, I'd been returning from the river after going to fetch water for my hut. It was really far away and I was so exhausted and had been on the verge of breaking down and bursting into tears. My eyes widened in surprise and I blinked to be sure I wasn't seeing an apparition. I had seen a lot of that recently and I wasn't sure what to believe anymore. He smiled. "Yes, it's me. I know you don't believe but it's me, Sera, it’s Aries." "I know who you are," I blinked, taking a few steps back and wondering if I should be happy about this development or if I should feel uncomfortable. However, I couldn’t hide my shock. It’s the second time Aries has found his way into Lycaronia somehow. “How are you here?” In one move, he was standing before me, his eyes light with cheer. Then he pulled me into a tight hug, wrapping his arms around me and filling me with his warmth. I was just taking all of this in when he pulled slightly away and cupped my cheeks. I'd be thrown out of his chambers thereby, reducing me from the post of his mistress to a mere slave once again. I had returned to my room in a teary mess, trying not to think of how he had looked at me with utter disdain, like he couldn't stand me. How had he gone from being all over me to barely wanting me to be in his presence? As much as I tried not to think too much about it, I was greatly hurt by it. I couldn't stand the gossip from the maids either. Whenever I passed by a group, all they did was glance at each other, their gazes telling tales I didn't need to hear verbally. A few of them were bold enough to whisper when I passed by. I couldn't even snap at them to stop. That respect had been stripped off like it was never even there. I had lost favor in the sight of the king, they said. He must have gotten tired of me because I couldn't satisfy his needs, all
