Lily’s POV

Josh and I chased Sandra, our footsteps pounding on the floor as she raced for the elevator like a woman on a mission.

“Sandra, wait!” Josh shouted, but she just cackled, going for the elevator button.

“Oh no, no, no,” she sang, in a sing-song voice, grinning maniacally. “The world…no, the universe deserves to hear this moment!”

I could hardly catch my breath before I seized her arm. “Sandra, please,” I begged. “Josh and I are just in the process… of you know…getting to know each other. Please give us some time before you go making the broadcast?”

Sandra paused, thoughtfully tapping her chin as if she were weighing my words. “Hmm,” she mused. “Fine. I suppose I can give you lovebirds a grace. But I need all the details when the time comes.” She wiggled her eyebrows artfully.

Josh sighed in relief. “You’re too nice, Sandra.”

Translation: “I know,” she added with a dramatic flip of her hair. Then, a sardonic smile on her lips, she spun on her heel and went inside her apartmen

Lily’s POVTime stretched between us.Josh was still holding me. My palms laid flat against his chest, with my fingers brushing along the material of his shirt as my fingertips were treated with the steady swell and descend of his breath beneath my hands.Neither of us moved, or spoke. We just stared.Heat crawled up my neck as his gaze fixed on mine, and it became unreadable, and intense. Then a sharp scoff ruined the moment. I knew it was Maggie. Her arms were crossed, with her fingers jabbing her sleeves, and lips pulled in a taut smile that never reached her eyes.“How cute,” she drawled, but the venom in her tone was obvious.Josh released me slowly. His jaw set as he stood. I stepped back as the lingering warmth of his touch faded. My fingers groped for the scattered bits of paper, but before I could, Josh crouched down next to me, picking them up in silence.Maggie’s heels clicked as she approached. “Watch it, Josh,” she said with a smirk on her lips. “People might begin to thi

Lily’s POVJosh walked me home to my apartment building, his body a solid and constant warmth against the mild cold night air.The subway ride had reddened his skin, leaving him broader than usual, and when his fingers brushed against mine, the warmth stayed long past when we parted at my door.I looked at him, my heart still pounding from all that had happened. “I really do enjoy tonight,” I said quietly. His lips turned up into the smallest semblance of a smile, but his stare remained intense, absorbing every inch of me. The way his eyes went across my face sent a slow shiver through me that had nothing to do with the cold.“Sleep well, Lily,” he said, his low voice almost hypnotic. There was something in the way he said my name that made warmth coil in my stomach.I hesitated one second too long, and he only watched me, patient, unwavering. Then, eventually, I stepped inside. “Goodnight, Josh.”“Goodnight.” But he didn’t move.I shut the door, resting my forehead against it for a m

Adam’s POVI made a promise. And I intended to keep it.Elizabeth had suffered enough because of me, because the world I pulled her into. But today, for one night at least, I’d make it right.Maximus had claimed the Mafia enterprise for the time being, feeding me live updates on Lance, who had gone underground but not quiet enough.“Something’s not right,” Maximus said over the phone. “Lance has been seeing a woman. She's pretty longe and looks a lot like onde. Hannah Elizabeth “About the same height and build as Elizabeth.”My blood went cold.“Find out who she is,” I ordered, squeezing the phone tighter.“Already on it. But there’s more. We found out Lance had been the one to sabotage the elevator. He blackmailed the dead repairman’s family and used their debt against him.”I sighed, my jaw tight, clenched.“Clear their debt,” I said. “And put people on them. I don’t want Lance doing some weird manipulation on them for revenge.”Maximus didn’t hesitate. “Understood.”As much as I wo

Adam's POV“I…” Her voice wavered.Nico frowned. “Raphael sent you to get it. What took you so long?”Corinth didn’t speak. Her fingers shook around the tray, her gaze darting from me to Nico, and back again. She hadn’t meant to poison Elizabeth. She had brought the coffee to the wrong person.“But he said it was for the madam,” Corinth replied.“That idiot! One hit coffee for me, then send someone to go and fetch some warm water for madam,” Nico grumbled, then his sight landed on Maximus and he bowed. He coughed, then spoke. “Ehem, um, I am so sorry. I didn't…”Adam didn't even try, and simply made a hand gesture at him, dismissing his presence. Nico smiled and took Corinth’s hand leading her out.Once Nico took Corinth away, I stayed frozen, watching their figures shrink with narrowed eyes.I felt it in my guts that Corinth was bad news. She had shivered like a leaf in a raging wind. Her fingers had clung to the tray as if it were the last rope between her and the grave. And most of

Corinth’s POVMy legs quaked beneath me and my fingers shook, and, as Nico tugged me after him down the hallway, I forced myself to breathe levelly, evenly. Each step was a slog, as if I was walking through various levels of quicksand, the unrelenting gravity of my miscalculation falling on me in waves. This was not supposed to happen. It was Elizabeth who was meant to drink the coffee and not me.And yet, there I was, struggling to keep myself intact while Nico shot me the occasional glance, his face halfway between interest and annoyance.“So, what took you so long?” he asked, his voice light and yet punctured by a sharper edge.I swallowed. My throat felt tight. “I…Raphael wanted me to be cautious. The madam’s coffee had to be perfect,” he said.”Nico let out a snort. “Raphael? When did he ever care if coffee is perfect? And you heard wrong, for sure. The coffee was mine. ”“Was it?” I asked, claiming ignorance. “I am sorry.”“Why are you apologizing?” He asked.I said nothing, cle

Corinth’s POVThe voices outside the restroom cubicle became louder.“She’s in here.”I scrunched my hand over my mouth, my heartbeat pounding against my ribs. I leaned my back against the cold wall, listening to the footsteps approach.“Corinth,” called one of the maids, sharply, and taunting. “Come out now or we’re coming in.”I dug my fingers into my own skin, struggling to keep my breathing even. If I said nothing, maybe they’d go away. Maybe they’d get bored. But I wasn’t that lucky.Kicking the cubicle door, one of them made a loud bang. I jumped.“You deaf, whore?” another one hissed. “Open the damn door.”I hesitated. And if I took too long, they’d barge in. They had no boundaries.“Last warning.”I squeezed my eyes shut one moment, released a breath, then felt for the lock. As soon as I slid it open, the door flew inward, almost smacking me in the face. Adam’s POVAs soon as Corinth made a run for it, the chase ensued. The guards immediately shouted orders, their heavy boots echoing on the marble floor as they pursued her. Corinth moved swiftly, weaving through the crowd with a sense of urgency that gave precision to her every action. Her arms pumped, and her legs propelled her forward as she ran down the hallway, holding on tightly to the stolen gun.I followed her at a measured pace. She was driven by survival instincts, but panic often leads to mistakes. She would eventually slip up, and I intended to be there when it happened. At the end of the corridor, Corinth took a sharp turn into another hallway. A guard lunged at her, barely grazing her sleeve, but she spun around, driving her elbow into his ribs. He grunted in pain and stumbled back, crashing into a glass cabinet that shattered, sending pieces of glass everywhere.Another guard was on her quickly, reaching for her arm, but she ducked, swinging the gun to connect with his j

Corinth’s POVThe kitchen was filled with the aroma of fresh herbs and cooked meat, but it didn't give me the satisfaction I needed. I felt out of place.I stood at the shiny counter, my hands steady despite the cold surface. The head chef worked quickly and skillfully, preparing Elizabeth's dinner with pride in his work. He had no clue about my intentions. The moment had arrived. I reminded myself, "Don't mess up. Just do it and get out. It won't kill her. She'll be okay."I kept these thoughts in my head.I glanced at the spice rack. There was a small vial hidden between jars of basil and oregano, easy to miss. I had placed it there earlier to blend with the spices. My fingers brushed over it as I pretended to care about the plates. My heart was racing. There was no turning back.If I hesitated, my boss would punish me harshly. He never forgave mistakes. Failing was not an option for me.The chef turned to grab some rosemary. That was my chance.I carefully added a few drops of the

Adam’s POVThe room felt incredibly small, almost as if it were closing in on me. I could hardly breathe. My heart was pounding loudly, like war drums, as I stormed out, each step driven by the burning anger inside me.Corinth!!!That name was stuck in my thoughts, gripping my anger tightly. She had a simple task: deliver my message. Just one task, and she didn't do it.Maybe she even ignored it on purpose.I moved quickly through the hallway, my hands clenched in fists. I needed to find out what happened right away. Kevin had come out of his coma. That should have been the first thing I was told. Instead, I was kept in the dark. Someone was trying to keep me uninformed, someone wanted me off balance. And Corinth was at the heart of it all.As I got to the stairs, ready to go down, I noticed something move from the corner of my eye."Adam."I stopped and turned to where the voice came from. I saw Maximus standing there. He stepped in front of me, his face serious, his eyes sharp. He w

Adam's POVI hadn’t slept. I was tired, my eyes burned, and yet morning came, but my head wouldn’t sleep. Mirroring a shivering voice, slithering through the thoughts of the mind, wherever I closed my eyes, the very next moment, shadows got keen at the border of my moment, my sight. I didn’t know what was real anymore.Elizabeth curled up next to me, her breathing steady but shallow.Carefully I pushed her hair from her face, letting my fingers linger on her cheek. She appeared serene, but I knew it was an illusion. She was still plagued with nightmares. I had gotten up more than once to her shaking in her sleep and mumbled words that made no sense. That thought turned my blood to ice.Elizabeth turned a little and buried her face in my chest. I held her a bit tighter and then slipped out of bed gently. She didn’t stir.I dressed quickly. My body was worn out but my mind was as sharp as it had ever been. Today was the day I would get the answers I needed.By the time I entered the sec

  • Engage To The Wrong Mafia Boss   Chapter 89

Adam's POVI first noticed it in the little things — pauses, misplaced objects, an extra beat spent staring into space. Elizabeth had always been sharp, from her calculated endeavors to her scalpel-sharp mind. But recently, there was something different. She would reach for her food but then stop, narrowing her eyes as though she were aware that something just wasn’t right. Then she’d shake her head and make herself eat, though her appetite was sporadic. On some nights, she would eat an entire meal in minutes. On other nights, she hardly ate at all.And then came the confusion. She would forget things, the little things at first. Where she had left her phone. If she had answered a message〕. Then it escalated. Whole conversations fell from her mind. She repeated the same questions, even within minutes of one another.Initially, I told myself it was just stress. Pregnancy was complicated on the body, and Elizabeth had enough on her plate. However, I was not someone who disregarded my gu

  • Engage To The Wrong Mafia Boss   Chapter 88

Elizabeth's POVThe first time it happened, I wrote it off as nothing but exhaustion. I had screamed my fucking head off at that disappearing figure in the mirror.I caught a glimpse of a mirror today while fitting in brushing my hair before bed. I took the lamp off, and then turned back, and I swear my reflection didn’t follow.I blinked. There was nothing peculiar in the glass. Just me. My slightly uncombed hair, my weary gaze, my finger caught in mid-action.I exhaled and wrangled myself into laughter.Pregnancy fatigue. That’s all it was.But later that night, I was roused by whispers. My pulse quickened as I opened my eyes to stare at the darkness. It was faint, like a voice on the wind, low enough in pitch that the words couldn’t be made out.I turned my head slightly.Adam was lying next to me, his breathing slow and steady, deep in sleep.I held still, listening. The murmurs appeared to come in from one end of the room, close to the window. But when I changed, they went away.
