Elizabeth POV

"You're not much of anything, Adam!" My father yelled into the phone. His brows furrowed and his face anxious as he kept looking out the window at a black van parked a few blocks away from our house.

Hanging up on the caller,he drops the phone  and turns to me.

"I'm really sorry ruining the family dinner like this, Princess, but you have to come with me"

He gently grabbed my wrist and pulled me up from the dining table and led me upstairs to his room.

My mother frantically got up from her seat.

"What is it, Honey?" She tries to sound less panicked than she really was.

"Adam Mich"  He said, signalling her to the van  parked outside with a nod.

I followed him without asking questions, trying not to fall as I did.

My father is a police officer dedicated to his job regardless of the danger that looms. Sometimes the danger follows him home, just like this one.

"Stay in here Honey, don't come out unless I call for you and if I don't,find Lance! I love you."  He kissed my forehead and hurriedly closed the door to the closet where he had hid me in.

I heard the door to his room lock twice. I didn't have the chance to say or do anything. I had questions, loads of them.

Straining my ears, I heard voices of people talking in rushed high tones. Arguing. I couldn't hear what the conversation was about, but it sounded tense.

The first sound of a gunshot almost blared my ears.

I clasped my hands over my mouth, trying not to scream against the sound of two more gunshots that followed soon after.

My heart felt like it would burst with all that beating it was doing. My mind raced at the thoughts of who was shot.

The sound of heavy footsteps approaching the room made all the hairs on my body stand on its ends.

The thought of it not being my father terrified me that I started to pray silently.

I peeped through the hole in between the closet doors to at least know my fate as the footsteps became closer.

The door bursts open, a tall, dark haired masculine figure with a tattoo of a viper snake on his right arm, walks in with a gun in hand.

Barely able to breathe now, I could already figure out the fate of my parents–and mine, very soon, as he searched under the bed looking for something.

His face was hard to see,he had his back to me the whole time.

He placed a call, sounding frustrating.

"You said there were three in the house, I can't find the boy!" He barked into the phone.

He was looking for me!. I gasped as quietly as I could with my hands still covering my mouth.

My razor cut blonde hairstyle had confused them into thinking I was a boy.

I slowly backed deeper into the closet.

"I've checked everywhere! The rooms, kitchen, garage, under the bed,the clos–. Damn it! The freakin closet!"

I hear him hang up and slowly turn his steps, laughing hysterically.

"Hello there, little guy"  He says like he could already see me through the hole, taunting me as he takes slow steady steps to the closet.

I had only briefly returned to give my parents a surprise visit after fourteen years. No one would ever had imagined I would be hiding in the closet afraid for my life on the same fucking day!

My back pressed hard on the closet wall, I stared at the door waiting and listening. Panicking, I knocked to the side of one of my dad's  shoes, with my elbow.

The wall behind me opened and I found myself falling into a dark space, landing face flat on the cold, hard floor.

Feeling lightheaded from the fall, I tried to stay alert. I heard the wall close up just in time before he reached the closet door.

"It's fucking empty! " He screamed.

The thoughts of my parents probably dead and the effect of the fall, ache my head and soul to the extent that I felt too exhausted and succumbed to darkness.

When I opened my eyes to the darkness again, I laid still and listened for any sound, too afraid to even breathe so I wouldn't be too loud.

Everything was silent.

I started to sob the tears I had held back trying to stay alive, the hot fluid mixed with sweat sting my eyes.

My phone vibrated in the pocket of my sweatpants, startling me..

For someone who is always on her phone,I had totally forgotten I had it on me.

Thank goodness I did.

It is Monica, my flat mate.

Because of the nature of his job, my father had sent me to live with my Aunt Nevelyn when I was only Ten years old.

Even that didn't help. Aunt Nevelyn, before her passing away, had been very paranoid that we'd be in danger if we stayed in a particular location for too long.

We'd moved from city to city after a period of at least two years.

It was after her death I decided to settle in Quebec city where I met Monica.

I let the phone ring over and over again, too afraid I may be found if I picked up.

Quickly setting the phone on silent mode,I turned on its flashlight.

The space looked like an old dusty underground tunnel. It had two parts; smaller and bigger sections.

The first section wasn't big enough for me to stand so I crawled my way out till I arrived at the much bigger section.

My knees started to hurt, the way down seemed further than I had anticipated.

I rubbed on my knees with my hand to massage the ache and soothe it a bit.

Who were those men and what did they want from us? I started to weep again.

My phone made a beeping sound indicating my phone was shutting down.

"Shit!" I cussed.

Trying to find my way through the darkness, I guided my steps with my hands on the wall until, I felt the button.

“My God!”

And the light rays hit my eyes.

ADAM'S POVRichard was one to get angry quickly. He always wanted to be the Mafia Boss after our father died. He loved power so much and was blinded by the little he was given.'You'll be my second-in-command after Dad dies' He always tells me.One day, when he was 19, Dad caught him making out with one of his mistresses at the back of our house. He was chained in the red room, tortured and kept for days without food. When I tried sneaking in food for him through the window, a guard caught me and reported me to my father. I was chained in the second room, with lesser punishment. But that still didn't change my hatred towards my father.Richard had already resigned to his rate of being an orphan. He never considered the Mafia Boss as our father. On the third day, we were released. Richard swore an oath to protect me against my father.'The doctor is here Boss,' I hear one of my men say.I snapped into consciousness immediately. I look at Richard and see him nod slowly at me. ELIZABETH'S POVHe looked at me in horror, trying to understand what I meant. It took him five minutes to put the pieces together.'You are getting married? To whom? Where? How? I don't understand you, Elizabeth. What happened in the two days I let you be?' He asked, his eyes tilting in confusion less than concern.I tightened my lips. I didn't want to tell him too much. I didn't trust him enough either, ever since he disappeared without a word.'You'll get to know soon enough,' I said and walked towards my vanity, taking out things I'll need.'You'll need more of that perfume,' Lance said with a knowing smirk.'Guess you catch on quick,' I said, mirroring his enthusiasm.'But this is suicide. You know he'll kill you if he discovers who you are. The Mafia is ruthless and Adam is no exception. Your late parents will understand that you tried revenging them. I said genuinely to the man who had served me fiercely.'It's an honour Boss.' He said and attempted to walk away. 'Can I speak freely sir?' He asked when he noticed my raised eyebrows.'What is the issue?' I asked. 'Remember when you said we should do a background check on Elizabeth Hugh?' I said, half screaming, while reaching for my clothes I abandoned on the bed. Thankfully, he wasn't with any guard.'I am so sorry. I didn't mean to intrude.' He said almost immediately with an embarrassed cheek. He quickly left and closed the door so that I could dress up.I was supposed to be angry with him, but I wasn't. The way he kept his eye fixed on my naked body made me feel uncomfortable and embarrassed… but his eyes… his eyes, they were so charming and alluring. Who would have thought that I'd admire my parents' murderer this way…'This is not real,' I muttered to myself, snapping out of my illusion and quickly slipping the dress up my shoulders.'You can come in,' I said after securing my belt tightly around my hip. Adam’s POVAs soon as Corinth made a run for it, the chase ensued. The guards immediately shouted orders, their heavy boots echoing on the marble floor as they pursued her. Corinth moved swiftly, weaving through the crowd with a sense of urgency that gave precision to her every action. Her arms pumped, and her legs propelled her forward as she ran down the hallway, holding on tightly to the stolen gun.I followed her at a measured pace. She was driven by survival instincts, but panic often leads to mistakes. She would eventually slip up, and I intended to be there when it happened. At the end of the corridor, Corinth took a sharp turn into another hallway. A guard lunged at her, barely grazing her sleeve, but she spun around, driving her elbow into his ribs. He grunted in pain and stumbled back, crashing into a glass cabinet that shattered, sending pieces of glass everywhere.Another guard was on her quickly, reaching for her arm, but she ducked, swinging the gun to connect with his j

I felt out of place.I stood at the shiny counter, my hands steady despite the cold surface. The head chef worked quickly and skillfully, preparing Elizabeth's dinner with pride in his work. He had no clue about my intentions. The moment had arrived. I reminded myself, "Don't mess up. Just do it and get out. It won't kill her. She'll be okay."I kept these thoughts in my head.I glanced at the spice rack. There was a small vial hidden between jars of basil and oregano, easy to miss. I had placed it there earlier to blend with the spices. My fingers brushed over it as I pretended to care about the plates. My heart was racing. There was no turning back.If I hesitated, my boss would punish me harshly. He never forgave mistakes. Failing was not an option for me.The chef turned to grab some rosemary. That was my chance.I carefully added a few drops of the

My heart was pounding loudly, like war drums, as I stormed out, each step driven by the burning anger inside me.Corinth!!!That name was stuck in my thoughts, gripping my anger tightly. She had a simple task: deliver my message. Just one task, and she didn't do it.Maybe she even ignored it on purpose.I moved quickly through the hallway, my hands clenched in fists. I needed to find out what happened right away. Kevin had come out of his coma. That should have been the first thing I was told. Instead, I was kept in the dark. Someone was trying to keep me uninformed, someone wanted me off balance. And Corinth was at the heart of it all.As I got to the stairs, ready to go down, I noticed something move from the corner of my eye."Adam."I stopped and turned to where the voice came from. Elizabeth had always been sharp, from her calculated endeavors to her scalpel-sharp mind. But recently, there was something different. She would reach for her food but then stop, narrowing her eyes as though she were aware that something just wasn’t right. Then she’d shake her head and make herself eat, though her appetite was sporadic. On some nights, she would eat an entire meal in minutes. On other nights, she hardly ate at all.And then came the confusion. She would forget things, the little things at first. Where she had left her phone. If she had answered a message〕. Then it escalated. Whole conversations fell from her mind. She repeated the same questions, even within minutes of one another.Initially, I told myself it was just stress. Pregnancy was complicated on the body, and Elizabeth had enough on her plate. However, I was not someone who disregarded my gu

It was faint, like a voice on the wind, low enough in pitch that the words couldn’t be made out.I turned my head slightly.Adam was lying next to me, his breathing slow and steady, deep in sleep.I held still, listening. The murmurs appeared to come in from one end of the room, close to the window.
