Ever since he read the messages his mother had exchanged with Mr. Abraham and discovered the torrid romance between them, James never went to work again. He couldn’t face it and pretend everything was fine. He had always been a cold-blooded person, a man of logic and numbers, used to facing the challenges of everyday life with serenity. But the secret revealed in the letters affected him deeply.

What disturbed him most was the image of his mother, the woman he thought was immaculate, almost a saint, who was his boss’s mistress. This answered many questions he had: the generosity of the gifts and the high salary he received.

Mr. Abraham was worried about James’ absence and silence. So he went to the Campbell residence himself. Mr. Barton knocked on the door several times, but there was no answer.

“James, I know you’re here. Your car is parked outside,” he said in a firm voice.

“James, if you don’t answer, he might call the police,” whispered Meg, not understanding what was going on.

ChapterMeg and William were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the detective, who was considerably late. Just as they were on the verge of giving up, a series of knocks on the door broke the silence. Meg quickly hid while William cautiously opened the door. Outside stood the detective, panting and visibly worried.“Peter, please come in,” said James.“I’m sorry I’m late. I had a big mishap on the way out of the station. They tried to mug me.”He wrinkled his forehead.“Are you all right?”“Yes.”“Would you like something to drink?” asked James.“My friend, this time I’ll accept, because what I’ve discovered and brought with me is cause for celebration. I think we’ve got him.”Peter smilingly placed a series of documents and photographs on the table that incriminated the doctor responsible for monitoring Angelina’s pregnancy.“This man was never a doctor. He’s the son of a butcher, and everything he knows about medicine was learned by opening the bellies of pigs. I got the information

Angelina’s awakening was gentle, something that hadn’t happened for a long time, and she opened her sleepy brown eyes. The pleasant sensation of the warmth of another body next to her made her feel momentarily safe, but her tranquility was abruptly interrupted when she realized that she was on William’s bare chest.“What are you doing here?” she asked angrily, kicking him off the bed.William, ignoring the risk they were taking at the moment, answered, still wrapping his arms around her,“Why are you up so early?”Her hard gaze stared at him in silence.“Have you gone mad? You can’t sleep here in my room. You have to go back to your quarters before the maids wake up. Do you want to ruin my reputation?”He didn’t hear a word she said. She could only see her lips moving soundlessly. William was ecstatic to be there with Angelina.“Have you ever been told that you’re beautiful in the morning?”William’s compliment hung in the air, creating a brief pause before Angelina’s reply, who, with

London 1,923 "I will not marry her to my best friend." "What's the matter? The Barton family is wealthy, they have numerous estates all over England," Her happiness was stamped on her face. "And my dear James, every single rich man needs a wife." It took him a few moments to process the information. He didn't understand his mother's sudden obsession with marrying his adopted sister to his best friend. Nor why she insisted on including him in this plan. Martha sat down on the sofa and pointed to the other armchair for him. "I need you to help me get your sister married. Meg will be eighteen soon. It's about time she got married." "She is not my sister. And she is still a child." "Angelina married you at the same age." A long sigh escaped his lips. "But, Mama, she keeps you company. Will you be alone in this huge house? That worries me.” Martha ignored his question, leaning her body toward him as if to confide a great secret. "Mr. Barton confided

Martha's body was mourned at her home, and buried later that afternoon in the family mausoleum. Meg stood inconsolable beside James to pay their last respects. While she broke down in tears, he remained as steadfast as a rock. Her legs failed her, and she had to be supported by James when she heard the final sentence 'rest in peace'. She thought about how cruel life could be, the previous afternoon she had played the piano to brighten the weekly meeting between Martha and her friends, and now she was burying it. She felt useless and fragile, inside those black funeral clothes. She also felt James' eyes on her all the time, and that was strange. "Miss Margaret, my condolences." Her catatonic gaze stopped on the handsome, hazel-haired, aristocratic-looking boy who was standing next to his white-haired father. Although he had returned to London almost two months ago, they had not spoken, but Martha had an unshakable conviction that they were meant for each other. "Thank y

In trying to correct one mistake, James made another, but recent events absolved him, he was an innocent culprit. William asked with a suspicious look if they were all right. Meg quickly hid her face, feeling embarrassed. She didn't want her visitor to notice her red cheeks, trembling hands, and guilty look. "What are you doing here?" replied James, irritated. She pulled herself together quickly, noticing William approaching. He greeted them with a discreet nod. Then he explained, with an annoyed expression, that his father had forgotten his hat and had forced him to come and get it. "That, couldn't it wait until tomorrow?" James asked, drinking the rest of the whiskey in his glass. "He's been pacing the room and cursing for over an hour," William turned to Meg."I thought that Miss Margaret might be able to help me look for him," the visitor argued. "Sure," she answered, trying to keep her voice steady. "In the garden?" questioned James, irritated. “Yes," W

While Meg was carefully examined by Doctor Radcliff, the family doctor, James remained in the room with a worried expression, vehemently refusing to leave. The atmosphere was tense and the silence was interrupted only by the sound of medical instruments. The doctor's serious face further increased the tension of the situation, making James more and more apprehensive. Finally, James got up the courage to ask, "How is she?" "It was a great shock to her to lose Martha. You know how fragile women are." The doctor said handing him some medicinal vials. "Will she be okay?" asked James. "I believe so. She will need to take these medicines and rest for a few days, but if she doesn't get better with these medicines, call me." James sighed, feeling a wave of relief mixed with a tightness in his chest. "Thank you," he spoke, walking him to the door. As he made his way to the door, the doctor appeared to be absorbed in important thoughts. "James, when you have a free moment, stop by my

The days passed slowly and lonely for Meg, inside that room. James avoided her, and this made her even more distressed, and she remained under the care of the maids, until she recovered. Every now and then she heard Angelina's irritated voice echoing through the corridors, complaining about something. And Angelina always complained. While looking at the walls, Meg thought about her uncertain future in that house, and in that family. She knew that her days there were numbered, for Angelina would not allow her to stay for long. And Meg didn't want to marry William, because she didn't love him. So she had to find a solution. She thought that maybe she could work as a piano teacher, a maid, or as a worker in a textile factory. And all of these options looked bad. Her reflection in the mirror told her that she was still down. She left her room for the first time since she had been ill. She sat down on the stool to play the piano in an empty room. Meg played Martha's favorite tune, s

Meg walked through the Garden, lost in her own thoughts, mulling over the guilt she felt for loving who she shouldn't. When James simply ignored her, Meg didn't have to deal with the complexity of her feelings and the lack of ethics involved, but now he began to be kind and considerate, and Meg didn't know what to do. She was so distracted that she didn't notice the presence of James who was watching her intently from behind the bushes.Suddenly he interrupted her reveries, "I am relieved to see that you have recovered completely." Surprised to find him so early in the morning, Meg smiled nervously, feeling exposed, as if James could read her thoughts. He sat on one of the benches in the garden, looking nostalgic as he watched Meg. "It's been so long since I've been here," he said. Meg climbed up on the old swing that they used to play on when they were kids and started swinging, feeling the cool breeze on her face. "I always come. It was our secret place, remember? • Endless love   CHAPTER 45

The day was slowly dawning, but no one could sleep in the old hospital. Everyone was gathered in the office of the Mother Superior.“Incompetents! They let her escape right under their noses. Useless! You’re all useless!”The mother's superior shouts echoed throughout the hospital, filling the room with her rage. She was screaming and sweating while a nun wiped her forehead with a handkerchief.“A fire broke out in the hotel. A candle fell near the curtain and it wasn’t anyone’s fault,” one guard defended himself.“Now, what do we do if she decides to open her beak?” said the nun, anxiously reaching for another dry handkerchief to continue wiping the mother’s face.“She’s out of her mind. No one will believe her,” said the guard with a hint of disdain.Mother Superior began to walk around the place as she always did when she was furious and needed to think. It calmed her down and helped her relax. The windows were covered with heavy curtains that kept out the dawn light. The office wa

  • Endless love   CHAPTER 44

The next morning, Meg woke up alone in bed, the room empty and silent. She lay still for long minutes, trying to convince herself that she wasn’t dreaming. She remembered the passionate kisses and vows of love that had taken place the night before.Meg cried, but they were tears of happiness and joy. She was safe and happy. There was no sign of James, and she couldn’t have been happier. She looked around as if it was the first time she had entered that room. It was one of the guest rooms with a privileged view of the immense garden. Meg was grateful to wake up in the Campbell mansion. After all those months, she had been stuck in the hospital, sleeping in a hard, uncomfortable place. She was afraid of being attacked in the middle of the night, or of simply being abandoned by everyone.Noises coming from the kitchen and a strong smell of something burning caught her attention. She quickly got dressed and ran downstairs to find it. Then she was confronted with an adorable and, at the sa

James opened the bottle of wine and enjoyed the drink in his glass, taking each sip calmly. Silently, he celebrated his brilliant victory. It had been a long road since he had hired the private detective. There had been many false leads, many closed doors, and misunderstandings. He thought all was lost. After a few minutes, he smiled sideways and lit a cigar, letting it burn on the bed while deliberately knocking over some lit candles on the curtains. Within minutes, the room was filled with fire and smoke. He took the last sip from his glass of wine and then called the hotel reception to report the fire in the room.“I need help here. The room is on fire,” he shouted. The door was flung open. Several employees carrying buckets of water tried to contain the fire. The panicked guests made a commotion in the corridor, running and shouting non-stop.Only then did the nurse realize that something was wrong. With a distressed expression, she approached James and asked: “Where is she? Where

Meg was immersed in a bathtub. Two women were rigorously washing her hair and scrubbing her back with a sponge to remove all the dirt from her body. She knew why they were perfuming her body and applying make-up to her face. And the reason was far from noble. "Wash well, remove all the dirt from her," ordered one of the nuns. They put new, clean clothes and a tiara on her head. "That's good. She looks very beautiful," one of the women said. Mother entered the room and almost didn't recognize her. "Do you know where you're going?" she asked, looking directly at her. Meg looked at herself in the mirror, her make-up was strong and eye-catching. "They told me.”"Do you know what you have to do?" "No.” "Don't do anything. Just lie down and wait for him to finish." Sophia told her almost exhaustedly not to do anything, not to cry or try to fight, just to wait until he was finished. But how to remain calm in this situation, where she would have her body violated by a stranger.

Despite her advanced pregnancy, Angelina managed to convince James to let her go to the country house with her mother and some maids, one of whom was a very skilled midwife. She planned to stay there until she gave birth to James' son. The journey wasn't very long, but it was exhausting and Angelina's mother didn't stop complaining for a minute. The cottage was a haven that her family enjoyed every summer with picnics by the lake and horseback riding. But in recent years it has gone unused. "That's very reckless. I don't know how your husband allowed such a whim," the mother remarked again, throwing herself down on the sofa while one of the maids waved a fan at her. "Mother, my husband has other worries," Angelina replied, helping the maids to open the windows. The woman took the fan from the young woman's hands and ordered: "Make me some refreshment." She went to the window where her daughter was standing and they both looked out towards the lake. "Is he still looking for

The sun's rays gently invaded the room through the gaps in the curtains, while the pillows rested serenely on the bed and the hats remained organized on the shelves. Everything was exactly as it had been before. James sat on his mother's bed, flooded with a sense of nostalgia. "I couldn't keep my promise to look after Meg," he muttered, his tone heavy with regret. He picked up one of his mother's beloved hats and then opened the jewelry box. He planned to present Angelina with some family joy, something he should have done at the beginning of her pregnancy but had neglected to do. Among the precious pieces was a sapphire necklace that Angelina had long wanted. James decided to surprise his wife with this little treat. However, in a moment of distraction, the box slipped out of his hands and all the jewels spilled onto the carpet. "Damn," he exclaimed in frustration. Looking more closely, James discovered the presence of a false bottom in the box and found several yellowed envelop
