Meg awoke with a jolt as she heard footsteps echoing down the hallway. She was curled up like a ball, lying on the cold, damp floor. Her face was bruised and dirty, while her whole body ached intensely. Her mind felt like a bomb about to explode and her heart was beating fast.

Terrified, she tried to locate herself by looking around, and realized that she was locked in a dark, windowless room where she could barely see an inch in front of her nose, only a small sliver of light coming through the door. A sigh of pain escaped her lips as she tried to move.

Everything around her became quiet. The gloomy silence was broken only by the rapid beating of her heart, echoing in her ears like an anxious drum.

With effort, Meg tried to get up, but a strong dizziness stopped her, causing her to fall back to the floor. She struggled to align her thoughts and remember what had happened. Fragments of memory surfaced in her mind: the strange driver, the dark faces of those unknown men..., but

Meg screamed, cried and screamed again. Her screams echoed through the dark and cold environment, unanswered. Caged in a room with only fear and darkness for company, she heard the screams of other women as well. Time after time, someone would throw a piece of musty bread in her direction, accompanied by a mug of dirty water, just enough to keep her from starving to death. As the pain of hunger and cold settled into her weakened body, Meg couldn't help but think of James. Had he suffered by noticing her absence? Would he have looked for her when he realised something was wrong? Or maybe, just maybe somewhere inside himself, he felt relieved by her sudden departure. Questions without answers consumed his mind, stirring his anguish. The days dragged on grew exceedingly long. Hunger gnawed at his empty stomach, thirst punished his dry throat and cold penetrated his bones. It was an unrelenting torture that threatened to destroy his sanity. The door opened and a man in a long tu

"Hey. You!" whispered a female voice from the other side of the door. Meg was lying on the floor, feeling the dampness of the ground against her skin, causing a slight discomfort. She groped blindly for the walls, feeling the rough stones scratch her already bruised fingers. "Who's there?" Meg asked, her voice shaky. "Speak softly," she replied. The woman carefully pushed a piece of wood blocking the bottom of the door, partially revealing her face.Meg looked up at a woman, her eyes filled with hope and curiosity. "Who are you?" she asked again, eager for answers. The woman scanned the hallway, making sure no one could hear her, before answering in an urgent whisper, "My name is Sophia. Like you, I am a prisoner in this dangerous place. I'm here to help you." Sophia held out her hand to Meg, handing her a small piece of bread, "Here, eat quickly. You need energy." "I'm hungry." Meg swallowed the piece of bread quickly, without even taking a breath. She felt her stomach

The days dragged on slowly, like the ticking of a broken clock. Meg remained locked in her room, feeling a deep emptiness because of James' absence and the longing for her home. The surrounding environment was pervaded by a heavy stillness, broken only by the occasional sound of hurried footsteps in the hallway. As Meg lay there, she heard the sound of the lock being unlocked and her heart filled with hope, for she believed that she had been the victim of a great deception and that James would find her. The bedroom door opened noisily, but it was a stout woman accompanied by two men. It was not James. Meg felt disappointed and afraid. "Get up quickly and follow me," the woman ordered with coldness in her voice. Meg felt small before the imposing presence of the nun, and remembering Sophia's words, she decided to obey without hesitation, without question. She stood up quickly, leaving behind the cold embrace of the bedsheets. They walked down a long corridor, whose faded and di

The worst part of losing an illusion is that we will never get it back in its fullness, and Meg had lost all her illusions. She had witnessed the man she loved marry someone else and live unhappily, having no memory of James smiling beside Angelina. He always seemed impatient and moody. In addition, Meg was the victim of a conspiracy that would force her to marry a despicable man, and now she was trapped in a hospital that looked more like a prison. The day had not even dawned when Meg was abruptly awakened. Like all patients, she started the day with a brief prayer. "You are going to another ward of our hospital," said a nun. "Another ward?" questioned Meg, perplexed by the news. "Yes, the room you were in was meant for your quarantine. You are now cleared to socialize with the other patients," the nun explained. Meg had spent all morning carrying firewood to supply the kitchen, her delicate hands that used to play the piano were now being punished with manual labor. When the

Meg walked with quick steps down the long hallways. She was carrying a few pieces of wood to fuel the fire in the mother superior's room. At that moment a wave of childhood memories flooded her mind. She had lived for a few years in an orphanage and had learned the lessons necessary to survive in that environment. She learned that being passive would make her a target for cruelty, but she also knew that constantly fighting would draw too much attention. To survive in such places, it was necessary to adopt an almost invisible stance, balancing between these extremes and having allies. She entered the luxurious room with the bundle of firewood in her arms, she was so tired that she almost knocked them over as she closed the door, but held it tighter as she heard exalted voices coming from another room. "But, that's not right," a female voice shouted in the other room. "There's nothing to do," the other spoke up. "We have to stop." Meg looked at the table set up under the win

It was late at night and James' office was shrouded in darkness, lit only by the faint glow of the lamp on his desk. The air was infused with the distinctive aroma of the cigars that James loved and his wife hated. In recent weeks he had intensified his addiction, just to get her away from his office. He wanted and needed to be alone. James was smoking and drinking whisky when Ava knocked on the door, looking frightened. "Sir, there's a man here who insists on seeing you," she informed him, keeping her voice calm but with a trace of anxiety. "Who is he?" asked James, taking a puff of his cigar. "Mr. Peter," replied Ava. "Let him in and make sure there are no interruptions," James instructed, keeping his expression serious. "Excuse me," said Ava before stepping aside and allowing the visitor to enter. A middle-aged man with gray hair and a wrinkled face entered the office, holding his hat close to his chest. He was wearing a dark suit that matched his serious expression and his

Meg adapted quickly to her new reality. She was a survivor and she was going to keep trying. She, Dorothy and Sophia became inseparable in no time and that helped time pass more quickly. In the cafeteria, she forced herself to swallow a stew of dubious origin. It was forbidden to waste food, even if it tasted terrible. But Dorothy always scraped her plate and kept the crumbs. A hurried nurse with a hard look approached them. "Come on," she said to Meg, who quickly got up from the table. "Where are you taking me?" asked Meg, curious and apprehensive. "The doctor needs to examine you," replied the nurse without patience, pushing her into a room. "I'm not sick," she protested. A doctor who was not an employee of the institution was there, along with the mother superior and two nuns. "Take off your clothes and lie down on the bed," the doctor ordered sternly. "All your clothes?" she asked in confusion. "Yes, you're deaf," replied the mother superior. "No." The mother lo

In the dining room, the soft light of the morning sun filtered through the lacy curtains, creating a false serene atmosphere. James grimaced and pushed his breakfast plate aside, complaining of the severe heartburn that was afflicting him that morning. He looked worriedly at Angelina and pondered aloud: "Doctor Radcliff hasn't returned from his trip yet. Perhaps you could advise your doctor to examine me." Angelina, visibly uneasy, questioned: "My doctor? I'm not sure that would be safe." She played nervously with the rim of her teacup, her eyes showing anxiety. With a reassuring gesture, James replied: "He's a doctor, isn't he? What's the problem?" However, Angelina hesitated before speaking again, explaining: "Well, he usually only sees women." James looked at her seriously and then declared: "I'm going to work." He tried to caress Angelina's belly, but she shied away. As her belly grew, she became more reserved, going so far as to sleep in separate rooms, claiming that sh

Angelina’s awakening was gentle, something that hadn’t happened for a long time, and she opened her sleepy brown eyes. The pleasant sensation of the warmth of another body next to her made her feel momentarily safe, but her tranquility was abruptly interrupted when she realized that she was on William’s bare chest.“What are you doing here?” she asked angrily, kicking him off the bed.William, ignoring the risk they were taking at the moment, answered, still wrapping his arms around her,“Why are you up so early?”Her hard gaze stared at him in silence.“Have you gone mad? You can’t sleep here in my room. You have to go back to your quarters before the maids wake up. Do you want to ruin my reputation?”He didn’t hear a word she said. She could only see her lips moving soundlessly. William was ecstatic to be there with Angelina.“Have you ever been told that you’re beautiful in the morning?”William’s compliment hung in the air, creating a brief pause before Angelina’s reply, who, with

Just as they were on the verge of giving up, a series of knocks on the door broke the silence. Meg quickly hid while William cautiously opened the door. Outside stood the detective, panting and visibly worried.“Peter, please come in,” said James.“I’m sorry I’m late. I had a big mishap on the way out of the station. They tried to mug me.”He wrinkled his forehead.“Are you all right?”“Yes.”“Would you like something to drink?” asked James.“My friend, this time I’ll accept, because what I’ve discovered and brought with me is cause for celebration. I think we’ve got him.”Peter smilingly placed a series of documents and photographs on the table that incriminated the doctor responsible for monitoring Angelina’s pregnancy.“This man was never a doctor. He’s the son of a butcher, and everything he knows about medicine was learned by opening the bellies of pigs. I got the information

Ever since he read the messages his mother had exchanged with Mr. Abraham and discovered the torrid romance between them, James never went to work again. He couldn’t face it and pretend everything was fine. He had always been a cold-blooded person, a man of logic and numbers, used to facing the challenges of everyday life with serenity. But the secret revealed in the letters affected him deeply. What disturbed him most was the image of his mother, the woman he thought was immaculate, almost a saint, who was his boss’s mistress. This answered many questions he had: the generosity of the gifts and the high salary he received.Mr. Abraham was worried about James’ absence and silence. So he went to the Campbell residence himself. Mr. Barton knocked on the door several times, but there was no answer.“James, I know you’re here. Your car is parked outside,” he said in a firm voice.“James, if you don’t answer, he might call the police,” whispered Meg, not understanding what was going on.Ja

The day was slowly dawning, but no one could sleep in the old hospital. Everyone was gathered in the office of the Mother Superior.“Incompetents! They let her escape right under their noses. Useless! You’re all useless!”The mother's superior shouts echoed throughout the hospital, filling the room with her rage. She was screaming and sweating while a nun wiped her forehead with a handkerchief.“A fire broke out in the hotel. A candle fell near the curtain and it wasn’t anyone’s fault,” one guard defended himself.“Now, what do we do if she decides to open her beak?” said the nun, anxiously reaching for another dry handkerchief to continue wiping the mother’s face.“She’s out of her mind. No one will believe her,” said the guard with a hint of disdain.Mother Superior began to walk around the place as she always did when she was furious and needed to think. It calmed her down and helped her relax. The windows were covered with heavy curtains that kept out the dawn light. The office wa

The next morning, Meg woke up alone in bed, the room empty and silent. She lay still for long minutes, trying to convince herself that she wasn’t dreaming. She remembered the passionate kisses and vows of love that had taken place the night before.Meg cried, but they were tears of happiness and joy. She was safe and happy. There was no sign of James, and she couldn’t have been happier. She looked around as if it was the first time she had entered that room. It was one of the guest rooms with a privileged view of the immense garden. Meg was grateful to wake up in the Campbell mansion. After all those months, she had been stuck in the hospital, sleeping in a hard, uncomfortable place. She was afraid of being attacked in the middle of the night, or of simply being abandoned by everyone.Noises coming from the kitchen and a strong smell of something burning caught her attention. She quickly got dressed and ran downstairs to find it. Then she was confronted with an adorable and, at the sa

James opened the bottle of wine and enjoyed the drink in his glass, taking each sip calmly. Silently, he celebrated his brilliant victory. It had been a long road since he had hired the private detective. There had been many false leads, many closed doors, and misunderstandings. He thought all was lost. After a few minutes, he smiled sideways and lit a cigar, letting it burn on the bed while deliberately knocking over some lit candles on the curtains. Within minutes, the room was filled with fire and smoke. He took the last sip from his glass of wine and then called the hotel reception to report the fire in the room.“I need help here. The room is on fire,” he shouted. The door was flung open. Several employees carrying buckets of water tried to contain the fire. The panicked guests made a commotion in the corridor, running and shouting non-stop.Only then did the nurse realize that something was wrong. With a distressed expression, she approached James and asked: “Where is she? Where

Meg was immersed in a bathtub. Two women were rigorously washing her hair and scrubbing her back with a sponge to remove all the dirt from her body. She knew why they were perfuming her body and applying make-up to her face. And the reason was far from noble. "Wash well, remove all the dirt from her," ordered one of the nuns. They put new, clean clothes and a tiara on her head. "That's good. She looks very beautiful," one of the women said. Mother entered the room and almost didn't recognize her. "Do you know where you're going?" she asked, looking directly at her. Meg looked at herself in the mirror, her make-up was strong and eye-catching. "They told me.”"Do you know what you have to do?" "No.” "Don't do anything. Just lie down and wait for him to finish." Sophia told her almost exhaustedly not to do anything, not to cry or try to fight, just to wait until he was finished. But how to remain calm in this situation, where she would have her body violated by a stranger.

Despite her advanced pregnancy, Angelina managed to convince James to let her go to the country house with her mother and some maids, one of whom was a very skilled midwife. She planned to stay there until she gave birth to James' son. The journey wasn't very long, but it was exhausting and Angelina's mother didn't stop complaining for a minute. The cottage was a haven that her family enjoyed every summer with picnics by the lake and horseback riding. But in recent years it has gone unused. "That's very reckless. I don't know how your husband allowed such a whim," the mother remarked again, throwing herself down on the sofa while one of the maids waved a fan at her. "Mother, my husband has other worries," Angelina replied, helping the maids to open the windows. The woman took the fan from the young woman's hands and ordered: "Make me some refreshment." She went to the window where her daughter was standing and they both looked out towards the lake. "Is he still looking for

The sun's rays gently invaded the room through the gaps in the curtains, while the pillows rested serenely on the bed and the hats remained organized on the shelves. Everything was exactly as it had been before. James sat on his mother's bed, flooded with a sense of nostalgia. "I couldn't keep my promise to look after Meg," he muttered, his tone heavy with regret. He picked up one of his mother's beloved hats and then opened the jewelry box. He planned to present Angelina with some family joy, something he should have done at the beginning of her pregnancy but had neglected to do. Among the precious pieces was a sapphire necklace that Angelina had long wanted. James decided to surprise his wife with this little treat. However, in a moment of distraction, the box slipped out of his hands and all the jewels spilled onto the carpet. "Damn," he exclaimed in frustration. Looking more closely, James discovered the presence of a false bottom in the box and found several yellowed envelop
