ISABELLA’S POV

I froze. His words replayed in my mind, but this time, slower. It felt like the world was crumbling beneath my feet as time had stopped. My body trembled vigorously.

Mireille. Mireille was dead.

Tears rolled down my cheek as I gripped tightly onto my wine-suit trousers. It felt unreal, and the words sounded foreign for a second.

Alaric closed the gap between us, his palms grabbing my shoulder. The pain broke my heart.

“We can't say it's her until we see the body, " he said, and I could tell that he was only trying to calm me down. I booked us a last-minute ticket, and our flight leaves in an hour. Your bag is packed as well.” He formed as he pulled me up gently, and I leaned into him.

I could barely make out anything in my surroundings as we walked out of the building and into his car. The second the door to the car closed, I let out a scream, hitting the seat head. Alaric stepped in from the other side.

“To the airport, Enzo.”

Enzo glanced at me through the review

THIRD PERSON’S POVHer heart thumped loudly against her ribcage, her fingers were trembling, and she felt a cold spine run through her veins. “Stay right there,” Alaric ordered before shoving the door open and running to the street. He had parked the car in a safe place, but she could barely make anything out as blood rushed to her ears.He knew the homeless man had to be involved. He was conversant with how things like this worked. A surge of adrenaline ran through him as he stormed into the streets. His eyes moved over the countless people. He could still remember what the homeless man was dressed in and what he looked like. Sweat broke across his face as he stepped into people’s faces to check if the homeless man had changed into another outfit. He had read too many crime books to know how this works while growing up. Finally, he caught sight of the tattered black hoodie. He grabbed him by the shoulder with renewed hope and flipped him around.“Ouch, you're hurting me, " a femal

ISABELLA’S POV“I don't think we should do that after what happened last night.” He responded, dishing the chicken, fried potatoes, and egg on a plate and handing it to her.“We?” she repeated, then added, “Thank you for the food.”He hummed as he poured her an orange juice. “You don't think I will let you go alone, right?” She was speechless for a second. She wasn't entirely expecting him not to follow her, and she didn't want to bother him. “Enjoy your meal while I go take a bath, okay.” His hand was resting on the table as he spoke before he raised a palm and touched her forehead. “You seem better now. Let me know if it changes.” With this, he walked out of sight. Her mouth tasted bitter, but she managed to chew the food because she couldn't let his effort go to waste. Soon, he was dressed in a light blue shirt and cream-colored shorts. His face was neatly shaved, too. She was done, too, and within minutes, they were in his car, driving towards Mireille’s apartment. Her heart be

ISABELLA’S POVI had taken forever to snap out of the phase while Alaric spoke with the two police officers. Different scenarios had played out in my head. Mireille had always seemed so happy and carefree that I never thought she could hide something. She shared everything with me about how her first sex went. How sex with her new man was. How engagement was planned out. Everything except the important details.Who was the savior? I could barely determine what they were saying, but I knew he handed them what we had gotten from her house and the car. One of the police officers had said something about us taking a big risk and suggested that we stay put until we got the news. I had yet to tell Alaric I had gotten a package back in Alabama. I doubted that it mattered anymore. “We will get back to you, Mr Wolfe.” He said before flashing him a smile. Alaric hummed thanks while I laid my head between my palms, trying to solve the mystery. What clue were we missing? I thought as I tried

ISABELLA’S POV“We found something.”It was early morning, and Alaric and I drove to the station after the policeman called. My body was still sore from last night, and my heart was beating so fast that I held tightly onto Alaric’s hand. The street was barely empty, yet he managed to maneuver his way, and in minutes, we were standing in front of the police station. I dragged in a big breath as I wondered what news awaited me. This was either going to scar me for life or save my best friend. It was as though he noticed my fear because he held my hand.“If you ever feel uncomfortable, let me know, and we are out of here.” His words held a reassuring tone, which made me slightly calm. Two unfamiliar faces were there when we got to the office they had directed us to. One was sitting in front of a laptop while the other man, who seemed older, stood beside him. “From the tattoo in the picture, we managed to narrow it down to these three men.” The older man informed me, and I watched the

ISABELLA’S POV Was I dumb for sending a message to this unknown person? Even though the doorman claimed a delivery man delivered it, I wanted to believe he would come again. It was three in the night. I couldn't sleep, even though Alaric had done everything to calm me down. Our flight was scheduled to leave in the morning, and I was pacing up and down the room. “Be a man and face me, coward.” This was the message in the paper I had given him. Did the mystery man collect it yet? My nerves went on the verge of breaking. My heart was hammering so fast against my ribcage while my fingers were as cold as ice. After long, heart-crushing minutes of thinking, I finally snuck out of the room and headed down the elevator. As soon as I stepped out, I saw him in the corridor. “Any news?” I asked and watched him shake his head in denial. An exasperated sign slipped free, and I ran my fingers through my hair, a million trains of thoughts whirling in my head. The weather was chilly, best f

ISABELLA’S POVWhen I got to the restaurant, four people were inside. It was 6:45, so I sat at the corner, checking the time while I awaited the mystery man. Somehow, the time seemed to stretch longer. “Your chicken, ma’am.” I heard a waiter say, causing me to raise my head and look his way. He was dressed in a brown shirt and pants with a white apron around his neck and holding a tray.“I didn't place an order,” I informed him, watching him smile before placing it down.“You don’t have to worry, ma’am. It has been paid for.” With time, he disappeared behind the doors, standing in the far corner of the shop.My eyes darted around the room in confusion. Something vibrated against my lap, and I pulled out both phones to realise it was the burner phone. “How do you like your chicken?” The voice on the other end penetrated the air.“Who are you? What do you want?” I questioned, firmly gripping the phone. I tried to stop my voice from cracking.“You didn't come all that way to play games

ISABELLA’S POVSomething wet hit me in the face, and I sprouted my eyes open with a loud gasp to see a mean-looking man staring down at me. My face was drenched with water, and its stench hit my nostrils. It smelt terrible. My head was banging so loud.“Wakey, Wakey, sweetheart.” He laughed hard.“Where am I?” I slurred on my words. It was as though my body barely had enough strength to rely on. This huge man stood upright, flexing his muscles and endless tattoos. We were in a place that looked like an abandoned warehouse, with rusting metals and dust. “Death’s den. You asked for us.” He mocked and settled on a dirty-looking sofa on my right. The door opened before he could speak further, and footsteps approached as random words filled the air. I watched them walk in, the three men I posted with another, and he looked exactly like Mireille’s man. My heart flipped.I lurged forward to scratch his face, only to be pulled back by something tight and cool wrapped around my hand. “Let m

I don't know what she is going through or if he has his hands on her.” Anger surges through me. The urge to pull this policeman’s gun and shoot the culprit between the eyes engulfed me.The only problem is that we haven't found him yet. If they don’t, I will.I went into our hotel room this morning only to find it empty, and she wasn't even picking up. I had always known my wife to be stubborn and adamant. I should have expected this; maybe I would have been more prepared. I was standing in their office, more like pacing up and down their office. I watched as they tried to track her number since her phone was switched off. It was 11 am already, and it didn't look like she was coming home anytime soon.“Are you sure she didn't mention something to you? We can only deem her missing after twenty-five hours.” Anot

But deep down, she knew the time was ticking, and she might never be prepared to if she didn't do it now. She had searched through all the rows of dresses in the third shop today but found nothing that fit. Given that Alaric was having his suit checked out wherever he was, she had no one to ask. They had both agreed not to see one another’s outfits before the right time. She had no friends. No one to make this day more special than it was. She would have asked Enzo, but he was a man. She was disgruntled as she threw the last piece on the sofa before sinking into it, her face in her palms. Tears stung her eyelids. Mireille would have been thrilled if she was here.Enzo could see her from outside the boutique and near the car, and the inside was visible. ISABELLA’S POVThe drive back home was strangely relaxing, possibly because of my stress. Did I find this fun? Yes. Would I repeat it? No.Alaric’s face also showed fatigue, and all I wanted was to go home to a hot meal and a warm bath.Suddenly, I heard our car screech as a car swerved right in front of us, causing Alaric and me to bounce forward. A black Benz car was now sitting in front of us, unmoving. The owner didn't seem bothered enough to get down. I could feel my heart pounding so fast as the memory of the night I had lost my baby flashed through my mind.“Are you hurt?” Alaric asked, searching my face and body, and I shook my head in response.I watched him grit his teeth before storming out of the car to knock on the window. I don’t know what transfixed, but he stood like that for about a minute or two, and by the time he got back into the car, his expression had changed, and he wasn't saying anything. ISABELLA’S POVI strode around the house, taking in every beautiful art lined up the hallway. Every stroke was detailed; I hummed as a smile graced my lips. We had a few unpacking tasks, and Alaric had left for work, so I had just a few sightseeing tasks before making a dish for us. It would feel so good to cook in this exquisite kitchen. I followed the path that led to the room, visiting each. There were ten rooms, but one was the biggest, which I presumed to be the Main bedroom. Living in a huge house gave me a sense of freedom. My phone vibrated against my jeans pocket, and I pulled it out to stare at the Doctor’s number. The same man who had saved my life the day I got into that accident and lost my baby.Weird how he didn't judge me when I informed him I was now back with Alaric after he noticed the ring on my finger.“If it makes you happy, child.” He had said.I knew he had to be the right one to tell me what drug it was. Luckily, Alaric had an important business to attend to,

ISABELLA’S POVTwo days had passed since he broke the news to me, and finally, we were moving. Two logistics trunks were outside with ten workers waiting, but I knew I had to pick out my stuff myself. I wouldn't want to lose anything or take with me something I didn't find valuable. I knew I had just a few things here due to the constant sleepovers.I was rummaging through the bathroom, packing my hair products when one of them fell and rolled to a corner. I let out a sigh, bent to take it, and instantly saw the slightly open drawer. Something blue was sitting in it. Out of curiosity, I pulled it open to see a nylon of blue pills. My heart skipped a beat. Was Alaric doing drugs? My hand shook out of fear at realising how that could change everything. I knew I had to find out.“Babe, are you done?” I heard him say. I didn't hear him walk in and quickly put it behind my back. My eyes widened as I made eye contact with him. “You good?” I let out a dry laugh. “Definitely. I’m almost do

ALARIC’S POVWhen I had informed her of us going skating, her eyes lit up in delight. But now that we were standing here with skates strapped beneath our feet, I was starting to rethink that decision. Even with the knee pads, ankle pads and helmets, my heart was still pounding so fast. I have never skated, and the multiple online videos I watched all night did nothing to help.“Are you ready?” I asked, a part of me hoping she would chicken out and insist on leaving so I wouldn't be the sacred one. But instead, she nodded.I watched her get onto the ice, pulling me with her, and my heart started to race. Never had it occurred to me that I could be scared of ice. It's just ice. I have gone through so much more, so something like this shouldn't break me.A bead of sweat broke behind my neck. As much as I wanted to tell her how I felt, she was smiling brightly and without worries. I didn't want to ruin that. I watched her move one foot, then another gently, and I followed suit, but my

ALARIC’S POVGetting into the building was easy, and luckily, I saw Isabella sitting in the corner of my left hand. She was dressed in a red gown that clung to her white smooth skin like a second flesh. Her waist was snatched, and the dress stopped right above her kneecap. I drooled over her cleavage, deep, weak in the knee. She had a white pearl necklace on alongside white heels. Her legs were put together and slightly bent to the side before a chair leg. She looked so sophisticated. Her brown hair was beautifully rolled up, with none falling below her neck. She had slight makeup on, with her lips painted red.I was confused between going to meet her there and causing a diversion from the auction or signalling her to come over. But the Isa I knew was too stubborn to come over, so I went instead.“We need to talk,” I whispered, watching her give me a death stare. “Leave, Alaric. I’m busy.” She muttered between clenched teeth, then looked away.“If you could just give me a moment. Yo
