Father rarely called me aside, but I’d half expected him to, especially after dropping an announcement of that magnitude during lunch.

When I walked into his room, he was already seated behind his desk and I noticed the deep frown lines in his forehead, a subtle warning that our discourse would most likely be unpleasant. But I was no stranger to those type of conversations, with dad, that was usually the norm.

“Are you serious? About that silly announcement you just made that you're marrying her,” he asked with disdain evident in his tone.

I was already pissed at his very first statement. Was I a fucking clown? Why would I introduce a woman as my fiancée and be unserious about it?

“Yes, father. I’m dead serious about marrying Ashley,” I kept a distance from him and fought to keep my anger out of my voice.

“Well, you're fucking stupid. It’s glaring,” he was definitely not hiding his anger and he was fueling mine by the second.
