Orion's POV

I felt my entire body run cold immediately after the words left my mouth, I knew I shouldn't have disrespected him in the presence of everyone, but I was so angry. Why was he blindly following tradition when the evidence was glaring?

His attitude was the reason my mother was no more, he had killed her!

My father didn't reply to my words and his silence was becoming unnerving as each moment passed. He moved slowly toward a warrior who was holding his chalice on a silver platter, picked up the cup and drank wine content in it.

“All of you, leave us,” he said it so calmly that the words drew goosebumps from my skin. He was never this calm, I was used to him shouting and demanding things to be done his way, but not this. I would prefer if he shouted and demanded I apologized in front of everyone, but not this.

The people in the room bowed slowly and left.

“You too, Kaia.”

I turned behind and saw Kaia still standing by my side, her eyes flicked toward me as if asking if she should leave, I gave a gentle nod to her and she left.

The lock clasped shut and it felt like I was trapped in a den with a lion who had a ticking time bomb attached to its body. The silence blanketed the entire room and I felt the weight of my actions rest on me. I sighed tiredly knowing what I had to do.

“Dad, I'm so—”

“Don't apologize,” he cut in quickly as he took another sip of his wine.

“It's a sign of weakness, and as the Alpha to be, you must show no weakness.”

I stared at him and his eyes were glued to the floor like he was slowly zoning out of this room.

“Your mother was…a beautiful woman,” he looked up and I connected with his hazel eyes. For the first time, I could read the emotions in them: he looked sad.

“I loved her so much that it was so unreal, Orion, but…my father on the other hand…” he chuckled but the laughter didn't seem like they reached his eyes. It felt like a reflection of how broken his heart was all those years ago.

The truth was, I had only seen glimpses of what my mother looked like through pictures or videos that were made of her. I don't have any conscious memory of what she looked like anymore, but the rumor was my father was the cause of her death.

“My father hated the fact that she was a commoner and was fated to me. He warned me, he told me there would be grave consequences if I got married to her. He told me that I should reject her because the goddess always gave second-chance mates, but I couldn't because…I was in love.”

He dropped the empty chalice on the desk and leaned on it, wiping the perspiration that was forming on his forehead.

“The priestess warned him that there will of the goddess didn't have to be challenged. She warned my father about the consequences of the thoughts he was planning, but I didn't understand until it was too late…”

My heart beat faster as the pace of his story increased. My mind ran miles as I tried to place the pieces of what could have happened. What did Grandfather do?

“One drunken mistake and she got pregnant, somehow, my father found out and we got married immediately. It was bliss for the 9 months that you were in there. My father switched, he was a completely different person: so receptive and it fooled me completely, and…”

He folded his fist and threw his head back before going into a brief coughing fit.

“Are you okay? Do you need some water?” I moved closer to him and wrapped my arm around his back.

“I'm okay,” he stood erect again and wiped his neck this time. I put some distance between us.

“After your birth, I was the happiest man in the world and my father was too, but the next day, when I woke up…your mother was…gone.”

His eyes stared into space like the painful memory is encroaching on the entirety of his mind.

“What do you mean gone?”

I scrunched my brows, this wasn't what I was told, the story didn't add up. I was told that she was tried for treason when she was found conversing with a member of the warring pack, who happened to be her brother. That my father had ordered her death as per tradition.

“I don't know where she is, Orion. My father told me that he saw her live but I doubt that. I feel he…”

He coughed again and this time, it felt like his entire lungs rattled.

“Dad, are you sure you're okay?” I patted his back.

“Yes, I think I need to rest a bit, everything seems to be a bit shaky.” He tried to take a step and wobbled. I clutched him and held on tightly.

“Let's take you to your room.”

“Promise me one thing, Orion, before I go to bed,” he said and I felt like I wasn't going to like it.

“What is that, dad?” I responded softly, hoping he wouldn't hear.

“You have to find Hope as soon as possible. The longer she is on the run, the greater the risk is.”

Risk for who? I didn't care if she ran her entire life, she could die for all I care.

“Dad, I—” he cut it again and he sounded more

serious this time.

“Promise me, Orion.”

I gently placed him on his bed, willing him to rest his eyes a bit because he was probably tired.

“You need to be wise, Orion, you need to think before you make decisions when you become the Alpha, put your emotions aside and use your head.”

My brows knitted in confusion, why was he talking like he was going to die? I snapped out of the evil thought and nodded to him before walking out of the room.

I closed the door gently when one of the warriors moved briskly toward me, holding a tablet in his hand.

“Alpha, we've located her.”

Hope's POVI ran through the bushes, not caring that I was barefooted. I was running for my life so every other thing didn't matter. This would have been so much easier if I had my wolf to help me. My body was aching, but I knew if I stopped even to breathe, that he might catch me again. It has been six years since I was last outside, since I was able to smell the fresh night air. I had been kidnapped and chained in a dungeon since I was 14 years old by this very person chasing after me. Now, I was 19 years old, two days away from my birthday.Because of how I had been kidnapped and chained in the dungeon, I never had the goddess' help in transformation. I needed the power of the full moon for my first transformation.I could hear his wolf pouncing toward me, I needed the goddess' help now more than ever. If anyone had told me six years ago that this man would be chasing me through the dark bushes, I would have laughed at them. But here I was. I was running from the man who had assass

Hope's PovShock and confusion were the two things I felt at the moment. If Orion had recognized me, why had he ordered that his guards to throw me into the dungeon? His voice was filled with so much venom and hatred. He had called me a traitor? What was happening? My chest beat with anguish and pain from being betrayed. But was it betrayal?“Orion, no. Tell them to stop!” I struggled weakly as the men dragged me down the steps. The sharp stones tore into my skin, adding to the pain my body was experiencing. My face stung from the spot where the guard had hit me for resisting."Traitor!" A guard spat on me as they flung me into the cell. It was dark and smelled like rotting meat down here. I wasn't the traitor, Lucian was!"Help!" I screamed with the little energy I had left as my mind pondered hard. What had happened over the years? I shouldn't be here! They didn't given me a chance to explain why I was here. Was it because I was in their territory? They didn't have problems with th

I felt fresh tears form around my eyes.I didn't want to die, not when Lucian was still alive. I didn't want him to win by taking everything from me. I wanted to make him suffer, but I wouldn't be able to do that if I was dead."Please," I called out weakly to no one as I lay on the cold moist floor. My eyes felt heavy from how much my body ached. Even my growling stomach couldn't compete with how tired I was.I let the darkness envelope me, hoping that it would all be a horrible dream and I was back in the car with my parents going for the Pack meeting.***"Wake up!" Orion's PovI felt nothing but utter disgust when I saw Hope again. When the guards had dragged in a wounded girl, I was initially worried. It was a trait an Alpha was supposed to have, care and compassion for other wolves irrespective of their pack. But when I found out that that wounded girl was the daughter of the man that wanted my father dead? I felt consumed by hatred and disgust. She was bold and courageous, I would give her that. It would take guts to step your feet into a territory where you plotted a coup.My wolf, Adrian, tried to convince me otherwise. He provided excuses that she was just 12 years old and was probably unaware of the father's plot. But at 12 years, I was old enough to sit with my father at his meetings. I was old enough to make strategic plans on how to combat enemies.Hope knew, she was aware of her father's plot and she was using me as a pawn to get to my father. This angered me the more, the fact that she was using me. I genuinely cared for her, she was

He shouldn’t even be saying such out-loud, no matter how upset anyone was about the rulership, speaking ill about them was tantamount to treason, but I had a feeling that this man didn’t care.“Ki-kill the Alpha?” The words stumbled out of my mouth, it didn’t make sense, what had he done?“Yes, and you will help me.”He had done a lot, I know for sure but…was it even sensible for me to feel some sort of pity for him or some sadness for the fact that this man wanted to kill him? My eyes burned harshly as the light from the single bulb swaying carelessly above, invaded it.I winced in pain as the water seeped into my eyes, causing me to blink rapidly to wad the feeling. A stinging feeling rode up my arm as I flexed my wrist to try and rid myself from the entrapment. I rocked back and forth but the stinging sensation ravished my torso and my feet. When my eyes didn't hurt as much, I squinted through my eyelids, getting accustomed to the lighting: my hands were tethered with chaffing ropes to the arms of the chair, round my midsection and my feet. The entire pack and I had been waiting for over an hour, but Hope still hadn't shown up . How dare she? What audacity did she have to keep all of us here? To keep my father waiting!?Inasmuch as I was livid at such outright disrespect to my father and the entire pack, there was a bud of happiness springing at the base of my chest. If she didn't show up in the next few minutes, then the rite would be shifted and the thought of not being tied to such a being was relieving and very freeing.I clenched my fist around the seat I was sitting on, my eyes darted toward the right where my father sat. From the grim expression on his face, I could tell that he was unhappy as well. I didn't want to be the one to tell him that this was his idea in the first place, I knew from the very start that it was a bad idea. If we had killed Hope for her treachery, it w
