Chapter 4

In stories where love conquered all, the third party in the relationship was always the unloved one. My naive younger self agreed with that. It was like my teenage self had unintentionally paved the path for my future self's demise.

"Caleb, will you accompany me to see a doctor?" I refused to give up, so I tried negotiating with him again. I didn't want to admit I was the unloved one.

Yet, I dared not meet his eyes after saying that. I could only lower my head and wait for him to decide. I was deathly afraid to see indifference and annoyance in his eyes.

Alas, Caleb said nothing. I just watched his shoes, which the housekeepers had shined until they were spotless, walk away from my sight.

Maura still needed stitches, after all. There was no way he would choose me.

I looked up at Caleb's distancing figure and happened to see my reflection on the glass divider. I looked miserable.

I couldn't help but recall a saying that women tended to glow when nourished with love by their partners. If that were the case, would unloved women look so haggard that they couldn't even recognize themselves like me? I wasn't like this before.

Why did I have to suffer like this?

My ankle, which was fine at first, felt unbearably painful now. Even so, I hoped the pain would worsen. It would give me clarity and more resolution.

I was exhausted at that point.

I would always think Caleb wasn't too bad to me in the past. I told myself to work harder and be better to him in this marriage I willingly entered. If I did so, maybe I could melt his frozen heart someday.

However, I realized today that he wasn't as stone-cold as I thought. I just wasn't the person he wanted to give his warmth to.

I left the balcony in despair. When passing the doctor's office, I saw Maura was already getting her stitches. I watched her from outside the door.

She turned her upper body to hug Caleb tightly, her entire head burying deep into his chest. I couldn't see her face, but I could hear her cries.

She asked, "It hurts, Caleb. Will it leave a scar?"

"No. Nobody can see it since it's on your inner thigh."

"W-Who said so? My darling will see it! What if he doesn't want me anymore because of it?"

The two nurses giggled among themselves nearby.

As for Caleb, his expression darkened as he hugged Maura closer.

Outsiders had no clue, but I could tell what was going on.

The "darling" Maura mentioned wasn't Caleb. That was why Caleb's possessiveness deepened.

I dragged my injured leg out of the hospital and didn't bother taking the Goode family's car home. Instead, I hailed a cab.

All at once, I developed an inexplicable disgust for everything related to Caleb. I didn't want anything to do with him. That said, I still needed to get home.

After all, I didn't have my ID card and couldn't book a hotel room. I couldn't go to my parents' because they would convince me to tolerate everything and keep my marriage. Still, I couldn't possibly sleep in the streets either, could I?

Fortunately, Caleb would surely keep Maura company tonight, so I couldn't have to see him for now.

I later returned to the Goode residence, which was still brightly lit even when it was late. The housekeepers dared not go to bed when their employers hadn't returned.

A housekeeper helped me change out of my slippers while our residence's butler brought a refined-looking female doctor to me.

"Are you Mrs. Goode? I heard your leg's injured. Mr. Goode has specially asked me to take a look," she explained.

I froze at the doctor before me, surprise filling my chest. Did Caleb still have me in his heart?

A glimmer of hope ignited in me. Perhaps I was overthinking things. Caleb probably tended to Maura because her injury was more severe than mine. If he genuinely didn't care one bit for me, why would he arrange for a doctor to visit our home?

"Please have a seat, Mrs. Goode. Let me examine your wound. Where did you hurt yourself?" the doctor asked.

I sat on the couch and revealed my injured ankle while the doctor patiently checked it.

"What's this? How could you have gotten a burn wound in this spot?" she asked.

One shouldn't air their dirty laundry to the world, so I didn't plan to reveal too much. I merely explained, "It was an accident. A glass cup dropped on my ankle."

"Fortunately, the glass shards didn't cut your skin. A little antiseptic cream will fix this up soon. Gosh, and to think Mr. Goode was so worried about it! He even said he didn't want any scars to remain."

The doctor's words were a cruel slap to my face.

I wasn't the one who worried about lingering scars—Maura was. That was when it hit me. Maura was technically also a "Mrs. Goode" now.

I awkwardly retracted my foot, even though the doctor was still applying the cream to my ankle. "You've got the wrong person. Caleb asked you to come here because he wants you to check on the other Mrs. Goode's injury."

The doctor showed a tense expression. She likely didn't understand our family's complicated relationships. That said, she didn't dwell in her confusion for long.

She soon stubbornly grabbed my ankle and said, "Even if I'm mistaken, your wound still needs tending to. Otherwise, you may get blisters."

Then, she got to work while chatting with me. "So, Mr. Goode was asking me to check on Madam Goode. Gosh, one should give him a telling to!

"He can't just focus on caring for his mom and forgetting about his wife! After all, you're the one who'll stay by his side till the end of his life."

Her well-intended nagging only sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me. "I won't be that person to him for long."

The doctor gawped at me, then tried to ease the tension as if she was afraid she had said the wrong thing. "All couples argue. Are you upset because Mr. Goode hasn't spent quality time with you recently? I'm sure he still cares about you.

"I can tell your home is the most romantic and warm house I've visited from the moment I entered. There are roses everywhere. Couples that don't love each other wouldn't have this many roses in their home."

I liked flowers, like most people, so I never noticed the increasing number of them at home.

Back then, Caleb said it was meaningless to buy fresh flowers because they would die after a few days. So, he never bought me any bouquets as gifts. It seemed like the flowers at home only increased after Maura moved in.

The doctor was right. Couples that didn't love each other wouldn't have this many roses at home.

"Alright, now. You don't need to keep reminding me about that. Thank you. You can wait here for Madam Goode to return," I answered.

Now that my wound was dealt with, I should do something about myself next. This place was no longer my home, and I didn't want to keep being a piece in Caleb and Maura's play.

Caleb sided with Maura even when she threw her glass of hot water onto my foot today. But what about tomorrow? I couldn't win against Caleb's old flame, nor did I wish to keep competing against her.

I went upstairs, packed my things, and was about to leave. When I came downstairs, I bumped into Caleb, who carried Maura into the house.

He merely glanced at me before rushing to relay Maura's condition to the doctor. "Maura's afraid of feeling pain, so be gentler with her. Do your absolute best not to leave a scar."

"Don't worry, Mr. Goode. I'll take good care of…" The doctor faltered while staring at Maura, possibly surprised by how young Maura was. She seemed to weigh everything in her mind and ultimately go with how Caleb previously addressed Maura.

The doctor then finished her sentence, saying, "I'll take good care of Mrs. Goode."

Caleb stared at my suitcase without a shred of warmth or emotion on his face."It's none of your concern. Go back to keeping your stepmom company," I replied, not bothering to entertain Caleb anymore now that I had decided to get divorced. Hatred burbled in me so intensely that I kept hoping to offend him as much as possible. As expected, Caleb's expression darkened, and he reached ahead to snatch my suitcase.Even with both hands, I didn't have the strength to beat his. So, out of frustration, I sat on the suitcase to hold it in place. "These are my belongings from before we got married. I have every right to take them away."Caleb said nothing. He just picked me up from the suitcase. Because I was now higher off the ground,

When I woke up the next morning, Caleb was nowhere to be found in the room. I assumed he must have gone to be with Maura, especially after the doctor cared for her all night. He probably couldn't wait to handle things himself.I stood up and looked around our room, suddenly wondering if this style was something Maura liked. Caleb's study was decorated in black, white, and gray, but the master bedroom was a soft blush pink, with lace drapes and romantic fairy lights. Even the furniture was all in soft colors, and the bedside lamp closest to me was adorned with feathers.Once suspicion took root, countless small signs seemed to confirm it.I didn't want to waste any more energy dwelling on it. I got up, dressed quickly, and glanced downstairs. If he planned to keep me confined, I wouldn't be able to escape through the front door. This was the second floor. However, I could easily climb down if I tied the sheets together. Once I scaled the fence, I'd be free. I just couldn't take

My bottom line was that as long as Charles didn't notice, the more I could hurt those two, the better. I also wanted them to experience the pain of knowing something was wrong yet having to swallow it, teeth and all."Darling, Dad didn't see me just now. He definitely wants to talk to me and enjoy some family time. How can I just focus on eating and drinking? Maura, don't you think so?" I asked.Maura's face turned pale, and she forced a smile, nodding. "That's true, but you shouldn't wait too long to have breakfast, either. I'll get someone to warm it up for you. Caleb, you should stay and talk to your dad."As she stood up and turned to leave, I clearly saw her face—usually bright and smiling—fall in an instant. Her injury probably hadn't healed yet, as she limped slightly.Just like I used to.But at that moment, I smiled as I chatted with Charles."Speaking of family time, Caleb, it's not that I want to rush you, but you're not getting any younger. But my hand couldn't help but reach for his phone. Even if I were to die, I had to know the truth.Relying on my memory, I unlocked Caleb's phone. The moment the screen lit up, I immediately closed my eyes, hesitating. After struggling back and forth, I finally opened his photo album.Nothing.I thought maybe he had switched phones, so I checked his cloud drive, but still… nothing.Just when I was about to give up, I suddenly thought of his social media. Caleb had clearly said he didn't use social media, yet I found it on his phone. When I opened the homepage, I saw that he hadn't updated it in a long time. The last post was a class graduation photo he shared from his high school graduation.Scrolling down, I found several sketches he had drawn. I couldn't bring myself to discuss my intention to divorce Caleb with my family just yet. Still, for such a significant decision, I always hoped someone could show me support.Gia Shummer yawned before she answered the phone. "Mrs. Goode, what a surprise to hear from you so late. Aren't you going to put on some sexy lingerie and give birth to a wealthy heir for your husband?"I smiled wryly at that.Gia often joked that my title sounded like that of a heroine in one of those novels with a domineering boss as a lead. She joked that I had a handsome, wealthy husband, and she would tease me about having triplets in the future, each a genius. But in reality, there weren't that many lucky women, and even if there were, I would have absolutely nothing to do with them. Over these three years, I had treated Gia like family, always sharing good news while hiding the bad.Just as the saying went, "No matter how rough life is, one must have a good social circle"."Ms. Independent, it won'

"I don't want it! I don't…" I cried out instinctively. I was sobbing, and my voice quivered. However, he ignored my protests and pressed forward. It was too deep. I couldn't handle it and bit down on my hand to muffle the sensations, but he pulled it away."Don't hold it in. You sound so hot. You should be louder," he coaxed in a deep, seductive tone. He then brushed his tongue across my lips.I had never felt so good before. My eyes rolled back uncontrollably. I had read in adult material in the past that angry intimacy was supposedly more intense, even helping some couples reconcile on the spot. I always doubted that, but at that moment, I desperately wanted him to consume and possess me entirely. Any lingering shame melted away gradually, and I cried out freely. My parents were old, and their health was deteriorating, so the burden of running the company had fallen entirely on my brother, Chase. He wasn't naturally talented in business. The only reason the Levertons' business was still afloat was because of Caleb's connections."I don't know what happened. Several companies we were working with canceled their orders this morning."These are all custom-made products. Who am I going to sell it to if they don't want it? The goods have already been produced, and just the cost of raw materials alone is astronomical. "I thought since they were long-term clients, I didn't collect much of a deposit. Now, if we can't get the remaining payment, the Levertons will be finished!"I couldn't help but slap my forehead. "Why didn't you collect deposits according to standard practice? I chose a restaurant Shane and I used to frequent—a humble little spot with unbeatable food. As soon as I walked in, Mr. Bennett, the owner, recognized me and greeted me warmly. He led me to a small private room in the back."Wini! Long time no see," he said with a smile. "I thought you'd forgotten about this place."It had been three years since I'd last been here. After marrying Caleb, my life revolved around his world, leaving little room for anything—or anyone—from my past. I'd even let go of the parts of myself that once felt real and true, all in the name of becoming "Mrs. Goode".But Caleb never needed me. He'd get annoyed if I was too clingy, yet he'd accuse me of not being the dutiful wife when I pulled away. For years, I'd wrestled with trying to figure out what kind of partner he actually wanted, only to realize he didn't want a partner at all. He wanted a housewife who'd manage his home and turn a blind eye to his affairs. Dream on, buddy. That would never happen if

Maura furrowed her brows, her delicate features radiating an air of vulnerability. "With you away and Caleb always at the office, the house has felt so lifeless these past few days."Of course, love thrived in comparison. Before Maura entered the picture, I had clung to the naive belief that Caleb might eventually grow to care for me in his quiet, stubborn way. But watching him with her had shown me what it looked like when he truly cared for someone."I'm fine staying elsewhere," I said flatly, brushing off her attempt at concern."But you and Caleb are married," she pressed, her voice laced with a gentle persistence. "Married couples should live together, sleep in the same bed—"I couldn't help but smirk at her hypocrisy. "By that logic, why don't you live with your husband?"Her face froze, her surprise briefly flickering before she quickly masked it. Without another word, she finished her soufflé, leaving the awkwardness to settle like a heavy fog. Not wanting to stick aro

I was furious. He had spent years refusing to touch me, and now, when I wanted nothing to do with him, he couldn't leave me alone. I turned my head away, dodging his kisses and shaking it desperately, but he followed no matter where I moved. His body pinned me down, leaving me with no escape. The helplessness was suffocating, and tears started streaming down my face."I'm not accusing you unfairly at all. Every time we're together, you only care about proving you're in control. You never stop to think about whether I'm comfortable or not. When I say no, I mean no. "Just because my body reacts doesn't mean I want it—it's only because I can't escape."Something about my bluntness must have struck a nerve. His movements stopped abruptly, his face darkening as he sat up, clearly agitated but no longer advancing."I'm not in the mood anymore," he muttered bitterly before getting off the bed and heading to the bathroom.I pulled my clothes back into place, crouched down, and search

Sounds filtered in faintly through the haze as if from far away. It felt like Caleb had picked me up and carried me out of the bathroom. Chase and Maura seemed to gather around as well."What happened?" Chase asked, his tone laced with concern."She passed out suddenly," Caleb replied flatly. "I'll take her upstairs to rest and call a doctor."Then, Maura's soft, saccharine voice joined the mix. "Caleb, let me look after Winifred. It's more appropriate, you know, girl-to-girl.""We're married," Caleb shot back, his tone sharp. "There's nothing inappropriate about it."After that, the world drifted into silence, and I lost consciousness completely. When I opened my eyes again, Caleb was sitting beside the bed, casually flipping through the divorce papers I'd had a lawyer draft. Without a word, he tore them in half right in front of me, the paper shredding with a satisfying rip. "I knew it," he sneered. "You're desperate to leave me because you've got your eyes on someone else.

Growing up, Chase and I never had that unspoken sibling connection. Unlike the picture-perfect sibling dynamics one typically saw in movies, he completely missed my subtle cues to stop talking."Who else but Shane West?" Chase said, oblivious to the storm brewing in the room. "You know, the guy making waves in AI these days. "That guy's always been sharp. He didn't take over his family's business like everyone expected. Instead, after he returned from overseas, he started his own team, and now he's made a name for himself."Chase's admiration for Shane was clear. Despite being a few years older, Chase had always been the one Shane looked out for. Most of the trouble Chase got into back in school could be traced back to one of Shane's wild ideas.Yet, Chase would still defend him to anyone who dared criticize him, even now when Shane's reputation was infamous in certain circles.Caleb's expression soured at the mention of Shane's success. The contrast wasn't lost on him.The Leve

I turned around to see Chase walking in, dressed to the nines in a tailored suit. Caleb and Maura instinctively put some distance between themselves, likely to avoid any awkward associations."Winifred, Caleb," Chase greeted, his voice filled with a smug undertone. "Apologies for being late. The company's been slammed lately—too many orders to handle."No wonder he had the nerve to stir up trouble with Caleb. The recent surge in business had inflated his confidence.I had a pretty good guess as to why his business was booming. It likely had to do with Mr. Vaughn recently throwing some support behind the Leverton family. Word must've gotten out, and opportunists probably cozied up to Chase, hoping to use him as a bridge to Mr. Vaughn.Caleb, ever polite on the surface, gestured toward the dining room. "Congratulations on the success, Chase. Let's sit down. Dinner's ready, and we can talk as we eat."Chase sidled up beside me as Caleb and Maura walked ahead, lowering his voice. "H

Hearing Gia's name seemed to ease Caleb's suspicion, at least for the moment."I'll say it one last time," he said, his voice firm. "Quit your job. You've got two days to figure it out. Chase is coming over on Saturday. Don't embarrass the Goode family."With that, he turned on his heel and strode out of the house, leaving me to exhale in relief. Good riddance. There was no way I'd give up my job, but I did need to deal with Chase. It'd only make things worse if he showed up at Caleb's place and stirred up trouble. Thankfully, Saturday was a day off, so I'd have time to prepare.Over the next two days, I worked nonstop. I met with the lawyer Gia had recommended to draft a divorce agreement, then pulled an all-nighter drafting my proposal for the acquisition case and sent it off to Mr. Newman. By Saturday morning, I looked like a raccoon, with my dark circles barely camouflaged under heavy concealer.Chase was scheduled to arrive at 11:00 a.m., so I intentionally showed up fashio

I wasn't about to play dumb. "I'll handle this case and prove I'm capable of earning my promotion early," I said firmly.Mr. Newman's expression was unreadable. "You'll only need to keep Mr. West updated. The actual work will be assigned to experienced colleagues, but we'll put your name on it.""Wini," Mr. Newman continued, his tone measured, "you have to understand that this isn't a small deal. There's no room for mistakes. You're still new—use this time to learn."I wasn't thrilled, but I knew he was right. Success wouldn't happen overnight. "Mr. Newman, can I at least draft my own proposal? I know I have a lot to learn, but I need to start somewhere if I'm going to improve."After a brief pause, Mr. Newman nodded. "Fine. Once you've signed your contract, I'll have someone copy the files for you."His approval reignited my enthusiasm, and the once-stuffy office now felt almost vibrant. I threw myself into researching the case, slowly building a rough outline for my proposal.

I didn't dare decide on my own, so I turned to Mr. Newman for guidance. "If Mr. West is offering, you should accept it," Mr. Newman said with a nod. Part of me felt it wasn't right to take them, but I couldn't deny how much I liked those earrings. "Thank you," I murmured to Shane."Don't mention it," he replied with a shrug. Then, flashing his usual nonchalant grin, he added, "Since we're here, why don't we grab some lunch? I'm starving."Shane had flown in a chef from Nastia to prepare an authentic Nastian meal paired with wine from his own vineyard. As we sat down, Mr. Newman used the opportunity to propose a toast and subtly set the stage for me. "Mr. West," Mr. Newman said, raising his glass, "I was thinking of assigning this case to Wini. If everything works out, she could become the fastest-promoted employee in our department."My stomach tightened at Mr. Newman's bold statement. I worried Shane would find some way to make things difficult for me, just as he had in the p
