Chapter 8

"Winifred, how about you choose something else?"

I didn't actually care about the jewelry, but I couldn't stand the thought of Caleb giving gifts to another woman using our joint assets.

Falling silent, I looked down at my lap.

Charles, unlike Caleb, immediately noticed my displeasure. However, he also wanted to maintain his relationship with Maura.

"Cheer up. I can get you something better," he negotiated with me.

I shook my head, remaining quiet.

Charles quickly shot Caleb a glance, signaling him to come and coax me.

Caleb clearly couldn't comprehend my feelings. He repeated, "Dad promised to get you something better, didn't he?"

I squeezed tears out from my tightly shut eyelids, and I looked up at Caleb with a hurt expression. "I have no objection to you giving gifts to Maura, but Caleb, you've never given me a gift."

Sometimes, tears could be more lethal than any weapon.

Charles immediately shot Caleb a glare. As a loving husband, he cared deeply for Viola and was good to Maura as well. After he married Maura, he spent a considerable amount on cars and houses for her family. How could he stand by and watch his son be so stingy with his wife?

"I'll make the call here. Maura, bring that necklace out. Let Caleb give it to Winifred."

Then, Charles began berating Caleb. "How can you neglect your own wife for your stepmother? Do I look dead to you?"

Maura, however, didn't budge. "Charles, I really like the necklace."

I knew she was subtly competing with me, trying to see who Charles would choose.

She continued, "Caleb may not have given Winifred any gifts, but she has plenty of jewelry. Why must she take this one from me?"

Seeing his usually obedient and gentle newlywed wife suddenly become so stubborn, Charles began to cough violently.

Caleb rushed over to pat Charles's back. "Dad, are you alright? Don't get too upset. It's my fault. I thought that since Winifred and I were like an old married couple, we didn't need to worry about things like this.

"Maura just joined our family and needs something nice for herself. I know what I did wrong."

Although Maura was unhappy with me, she could only follow Caleb in attending to Charles.

"Charles, calm down. I'll get the necklace right now. You mustn't get too worked up!"

I hurried to the next room to call for a doctor. After the commotion, fearing it would affect Charles' health, I didn't engage in any further conflict with Maura, and our family spent the day rather harmoniously.

The elderly rested relatively early. After dinner, we all returned to our respective rooms.

It was at this point that Caleb, who had worn a gentle facade all day, finally took off his mask and confronted me with a cold expression.

The sound of him unbuttoning his shirt was noticeably louder than usual. He was clearly angry.

"When did you find out?" he demanded.

"What do you mean?" I pretended not to understand.

"When did you find out about the gift I gave Maura? Winifred, she's just a regular woman from an ordinary family. She has nothing to her name. Why do you have to bully her?"

So, to him, my desire to reclaim the gift my husband had bought for another woman was considered bullying.

I scoffed, grabbed the gift box Maura had sent over from the table, and hurled it at him.

"Do you think I care about this dumb necklace? Caleb, ask yourself this. In these three years of marriage, have you treated me even half as well as you've treated Maura these past few months?"

Caleb was left speechless.

Men knew exactly how they treated others.

He set the gift box aside and sat down beside me. "I was negligent, but I've never been stingy with money toward you. I thought you would buy these things for yourself. If you need anything, I can buy it for you in the future."

I hadn't expected him to soften his tone and try to make amends.

While I wasn't an unreasonable person, I no longer needed his soothing words. "No, thanks, Caleb. Just consider that I've suffered for the past few years, and I'm throwing a small tantrum today. We don't have a future together."

He didn't take my words seriously. Removing his clothes, he replied, "Your ovulation period isn't over yet, is it? Even if it has, it's not impossible to conceive if we're a day or two late."

I knew what he was getting at and immediately took several steps back.

"Don't come any closer."

As he took off his clothes and watch, he stalked toward me.

"You promised Dad today that you would carry on the Goode family line, Winifred. I think we should work on mending our relationship."

I had backed myself into a corner with no way out.

My emotions were strange at this moment. Despite my determination to divorce Caleb, I still found myself tempted by his face and body. I was even a bit afraid that if he sweet-talked me, I wouldn't be able to resist him.

"I don't want to fix our relationship. Stay away from me."

"The Leverton family has a certain reputation in the business world. Don't you know how to keep your word?" As he asked me that, he suddenly grabbed me and flipped me onto the bed.

The weight of his body pressed down on me, followed by the heavy sound of his breathing in my ear. "Be obedient. Relax a bit."

His kiss was gentle, like a feather, carrying a hint of persuasion.

I gritted my teeth in an attempt to reject his intimacy, but his kisses wandered elsewhere.

He kissed me, sending shivers through my body, then lifted my ankle and kissed the bruise from yesterday.

"It looks much better now. Does it still hurt?"

Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I covered my face. "Don't pretend to care about me at a time like this," I snapped.

"What can I do to make you believe me?" He leaned down again, pulled my hands away, and looked me in the eyes.

Those eyes didn't seem to be lying. Could it be that he felt guilty and intended to treat me better?

My heart wavered, but my mind didn't believe him at all.

Caleb buried his head and leaned in for another kiss. Just then, his phone rang. He had placed it on the bedside while taking off his clothes.

I turned to the side and saw they were messages from Maura.

"Are you asleep?

"Your dad is sleeping soundly, but I can't sleep."

The next message was an image.

"Do you think this necklace matches my wedding dress? I thought about it. It doesn't have to be real for the wedding. A fake is fine, too."

I suspected that Maura had planted some signal receiver on Caleb. The moment he saw her message, he went from being passionate to scrambling off the bed.

"Forget it if you don't want to do it," he stated.

It was clear that he was going to see his old flame. And yet, he was pushing the blame onto me! I had already said I didn't want to do this, yet he had never let me off the hook at that time.

He put on his clothes and grabbed the box for the necklace as well. "Since you don't care for it, I'll take it to Maura."

I felt a pang of disappointment as he casually walked out.

Good riddance! He might as well not come back.

Once I regained my composure and went to sleep, I noticed that Caleb hadn't taken his phone with him.

There was so much evidence of their love on Maura's phone. What about Caleb's phone?

My parents were old, and their health was deteriorating, so the burden of running the company had fallen entirely on my brother, Chase. He wasn't naturally talented in business. The only reason the Levertons' business was still afloat was because of Caleb's connections."I don't know what happened. Several companies we were working with canceled their orders this morning."These are all custom-made products. Who am I going to sell it to if they don't want it? The goods have already been produced, and just the cost of raw materials alone is astronomical. "I thought since they were long-term clients, I didn't collect much of a deposit. Now, if we can't get the remaining payment, the Levertons will be finished!"I couldn't help but slap my forehead. "Why didn't you collect deposits according to standard practice? The accounts need to be clear even with family, let alone with regular clients." "They were all people introduced by my brother-in-law. How was I supposed to know they'd

I had no choice but to hail another cab to head to Caleb's company headquarters. On the way to the company, I scratched my ear and cheek nervously. Perhaps the driver noticed my distress through the rearview mirror, so he asked, "Ma'am, you don't look well. Would you like me to take you to a hospital?""It's fine. Using the card Caleb had given me previously, I took his private elevator to the floor where his office was located."Mrs. Goode, Mr. Goode didn't come to the office today," his secretary informed me.I lowered my head. That made sense. Maura had left, so he was probably out looking for her."Can I wait for him in his office?" I asked as I pointed at Caleb's door. The secretary glanced insid

Our family was in the furniture business. My father, Wade Leverton, was once called the Furniture King in the business world. However, after an incident a few years ago where a retractable chair he oversaw exploded, he fell into a slump and developed Alzheimer's. My mother decided to take him back to our hometown to care for him. Neither of them could help with the family business. In the past, our family shared location data to prevent my father from wandering off. When I followed the data to find Chase, he was sprawled like a dog over one of the erotic chairs produced by our factory, introducing the product's features.Everyone around him looked at him with disdain and ridicule. His efforts were futile. These people were merely Caleb's accomplices."Chase, get up!" I quickly went to pull him to his feet. Everyone looked at me. "Mr. Leverton, is this your sister? Why don't we let her demonstrate the product for us so we can see it clearly?"The men's faces were full of malic

The moment I brought up Maura, Caleb jumped like he'd been caught red-handed. "Can you stop dragging Maura into every single thing between us? Didn't your parents teach you to show some respect for your elders?" I let out a cold laugh. "In my family, we were taught that elders don't sit at the table flirting with the younger generation."Caleb's jaw tightened, and his patience was clearly wearing thin. "Winifred, I'm trying to talk to you like an adult, but you just have to be snarky, don't you?"That condescending tone made my skin crawl like he was doing me a favor just by standing here. Being a powerful business tycoon, he naturally had the confidence to act that way."Do you really think your family would still be holding it together without me?" he asked smugly, thinking his words would crush me.But he didn't know. I chose a restaurant Shane and I used to frequent—a humble little spot with unbeatable food. As soon as I walked in, Mr. Bennett, the owner, recognized me and greeted me warmly. He led me to a small private room in the back."Wini! Long time no see," he said with a smile. "I thought you'd forgotten about this place."It had been three years since I'd last been here. After marrying Caleb, my life revolved around his world, leaving little room for anything—or anyone—from my past. I'd even let go of the parts of myself that once felt real and true, all in the name of becoming "Mrs. Goode".But Caleb never needed me. He'd get annoyed if I was too clingy, yet he'd accuse me of not being the dutiful wife when I pulled away. For years, I'd wrestled with trying to figure out what kind of partner he actually wanted, only to realize he didn't want a partner at all. He wanted a housewife who'd manage his home and turn a blind eye to his affairs. Dream on, buddy. That would never happen if

Maura furrowed her brows, her delicate features radiating an air of vulnerability. "With you away and Caleb always at the office, the house has felt so lifeless these past few days."Of course, love thrived in comparison. Before Maura entered the picture, I had clung to the naive belief that Caleb might eventually grow to care for me in his quiet, stubborn way. But watching him with her had shown me what it looked like when he truly cared for someone."I'm fine staying elsewhere," I said flatly, brushing off her attempt at concern."But you and Caleb are married," she pressed, her voice laced with a gentle persistence. "Married couples should live together, sleep in the same bed—"I couldn't help but smirk at her hypocrisy. "By that logic, why don't you live with your husband?"Her face froze, her surprise briefly flickering before she quickly masked it. Without another word, she finished her soufflé, leaving the awkwardness to settle like a heavy fog. Not wanting to stick aro

I was furious. He had spent years refusing to touch me, and now, when I wanted nothing to do with him, he couldn't leave me alone. I turned my head away, dodging his kisses and shaking it desperately, but he followed no matter where I moved. His body pinned me down, leaving me with no escape. The helplessness was suffocating, and tears started streaming down my face."I'm not accusing you unfairly at all. Every time we're together, you only care about proving you're in control. You never stop to think about whether I'm comfortable or not. When I say no, I mean no. "Just because my body reacts doesn't mean I want it—it's only because I can't escape."Something about my bluntness must have struck a nerve. His movements stopped abruptly, his face darkening as he sat up, clearly agitated but no longer advancing."I'm not in the mood anymore," he muttered bitterly before getting off the bed and heading to the bathroom.I pulled my clothes back into place, crouched down, and search

Sounds filtered in faintly through the haze as if from far away. It felt like Caleb had picked me up and carried me out of the bathroom. Chase and Maura seemed to gather around as well."What happened?" Chase asked, his tone laced with concern."She passed out suddenly," Caleb replied flatly. "I'll take her upstairs to rest and call a doctor."Then, Maura's soft, saccharine voice joined the mix. "Caleb, let me look after Winifred. It's more appropriate, you know, girl-to-girl.""We're married," Caleb shot back, his tone sharp. "There's nothing inappropriate about it."After that, the world drifted into silence, and I lost consciousness completely. When I opened my eyes again, Caleb was sitting beside the bed, casually flipping through the divorce papers I'd had a lawyer draft. Without a word, he tore them in half right in front of me, the paper shredding with a satisfying rip. "I knew it," he sneered. "You're desperate to leave me because you've got your eyes on someone else.

Growing up, Chase and I never had that unspoken sibling connection. Unlike the picture-perfect sibling dynamics one typically saw in movies, he completely missed my subtle cues to stop talking."Who else but Shane West?" Chase said, oblivious to the storm brewing in the room. "You know, the guy making waves in AI these days. "That guy's always been sharp. He didn't take over his family's business like everyone expected. Instead, after he returned from overseas, he started his own team, and now he's made a name for himself."Chase's admiration for Shane was clear. Despite being a few years older, Chase had always been the one Shane looked out for. Most of the trouble Chase got into back in school could be traced back to one of Shane's wild ideas.Yet, Chase would still defend him to anyone who dared criticize him, even now when Shane's reputation was infamous in certain circles.Caleb's expression soured at the mention of Shane's success. The contrast wasn't lost on him.The Leve

I turned around to see Chase walking in, dressed to the nines in a tailored suit. Caleb and Maura instinctively put some distance between themselves, likely to avoid any awkward associations."Winifred, Caleb," Chase greeted, his voice filled with a smug undertone. "Apologies for being late. The company's been slammed lately—too many orders to handle."No wonder he had the nerve to stir up trouble with Caleb. The recent surge in business had inflated his confidence.I had a pretty good guess as to why his business was booming. It likely had to do with Mr. Vaughn recently throwing some support behind the Leverton family. Word must've gotten out, and opportunists probably cozied up to Chase, hoping to use him as a bridge to Mr. Vaughn.Caleb, ever polite on the surface, gestured toward the dining room. "Congratulations on the success, Chase. Let's sit down. Dinner's ready, and we can talk as we eat."Chase sidled up beside me as Caleb and Maura walked ahead, lowering his voice. "H

Hearing Gia's name seemed to ease Caleb's suspicion, at least for the moment."I'll say it one last time," he said, his voice firm. "Quit your job. You've got two days to figure it out. Chase is coming over on Saturday. Don't embarrass the Goode family."With that, he turned on his heel and strode out of the house, leaving me to exhale in relief. Good riddance. There was no way I'd give up my job, but I did need to deal with Chase. It'd only make things worse if he showed up at Caleb's place and stirred up trouble. Thankfully, Saturday was a day off, so I'd have time to prepare.Over the next two days, I worked nonstop. I met with the lawyer Gia had recommended to draft a divorce agreement, then pulled an all-nighter drafting my proposal for the acquisition case and sent it off to Mr. Newman. I wasn't about to play dumb. "I'll handle this case and prove I'm capable of earning my promotion early," I said firmly.Mr. Newman's expression was unreadable. "You'll only need to keep Mr. West updated. The actual work will be assigned to experienced colleagues, but we'll put your name on it.""Wini," Mr. Newman continued, his tone measured, "you have to understand that this isn't a small deal. There's no room for mistakes. You're still new—use this time to learn."I wasn't thrilled, but I knew he was right. Success wouldn't happen overnight. "Mr. Newman, can I at least draft my own proposal? I know I have a lot to learn, but I need to start somewhere if I'm going to improve."After a brief pause, Mr. Newman nodded. "Fine. Once you've signed your contract, I'll have someone copy the files for you."His approval reignited my enthusiasm, and the once-stuffy office now felt almost vibrant. I threw myself into researching the case, slowly building a rough outline for my proposal.

I didn't dare decide on my own, so I turned to Mr. Newman for guidance. "If Mr. West is offering, you should accept it," Mr. Newman said with a nod. Part of me felt it wasn't right to take them, but I couldn't deny how much I liked those earrings. "Thank you," I murmured to Shane."Don't mention it," he replied with a shrug. Then, flashing his usual nonchalant grin, he added, "Since we're here, why don't we grab some lunch? I'm starving."Shane had flown in a chef from Nastia to prepare an authentic Nastian meal paired with wine from his own vineyard. As we sat down, Mr. Newman used the opportunity to propose a toast and subtly set the stage for me. "Mr. West," Mr. Newman said, raising his glass, "I was thinking of assigning this case to Wini. If everything works out, she could become the fastest-promoted employee in our department."My stomach tightened at Mr. Newman's bold statement. I worried Shane would find some way to make things difficult for me, just as he had in the p
