Chapter 9

Author: Love Berries
He wanted to take back all the gifts he gave her after a breakup?

Aurora couldn’t help but laugh at Joseph’s pettiness.

She had always thought he was just a little sleazy, but she hadn’t expected him to be this cheap and stingy.

Thinking about how she was once with a man like that, she felt utterly disgusted.

When she returned to her new home, she immediately started digging through her things, determined to gather up every single gift Joseph had ever given her.

Just then, Lucas walked in.

"What are you looking for?" His voice was calm and indifferent as he glanced at her.

Aurora paused, then casually replied, "Settling debts from a breakup. My ex wants all his gifts back. I've never met a man this desperate for scraps in my entire life."

There was a hint of frustration in her tone, her striking face carrying traces of annoyance.

The next second, her phone chimed.

A bank notification popped up, informing her that $40,000 had been deposited with a memo stating it was a gift.

Lucas cast an uninterested glance at the pile of cheap trinkets scattered on the floor, his expression as indifferent as ever.

"Throw all that junk away."

Aurora froze for a moment before she heard him adding, "Mrs. Carter, I don’t like my wife keeping another man’s things."

She quickly realized that her history of being hopelessly romantic had probably spread far and wide.

Lucas must have assumed she was still hung up on her ex.

"Relax, trash belongs in the trash."

Aurora twirled the sparkling diamond ring on her finger and arched a brow. "Besides, I already have my favorite one."

And she truly did love this ring.

Besides, now that she was married, as Mrs. Carter, she couldn’t let Lucas down.

At her words, Lucas’ lips curved slightly.

Aurora hesitated as she looked at the bank transfer. "Lukey, I should probably return this money to you."

Lucas certainly didn’t care about such a small amount.

But still, it was better to keep things clear.

"No need."

He raised a brow, his tone unhurried. "Don’t worry, I’m not the type to ask for compensation after a breakup. Just think of it as me spoiling my wife."

Aurora had been on the receiving end of Lucas’ generosity before.

She was always close to Megan.

As kids, Megan would often pull her along, acting cute and sweet in front of the adults.

Lucas had been one of those adults.

She remembered how, whenever she pouted and played along, Lucas would smile slightly, his gaze warm as he handed her a thick stack of cash as pocket money.

But this was the first time she was receiving money from him as his wife.

For some reason, her face felt a little warm.

"Then… thank you, Lukey."

She didn’t refuse again.

After packing up the old gifts, Aurora was about to take a shower when she suddenly noticed that the gold necklace Joseph gave her had a patch where the color had worn off.

Her brows furrowed.

She instinctively ran her fingers over the discolored patch and let out a laugh—half amused, half exasperated.

The gold necklace was a fake.

The only valuable-looking gift Joseph had ever given her turned out to be a knockoff.

That night, curled up in bed, Aurora couldn’t resist video calling Megan to vent.

Megan was completely stunned.

"A fake?" Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Has the Hunt family gone broke or something? Who gives a girl counterfeit jewelry as a gift?"

"It was probably something one of Joseph’s friends arranged," Aurora said lightly.

All of Joseph’s gifts were picked out by the people around him.

He had never put much thought into her.

So, it wasn’t surprising that even the gifts were cheap knockoffs.

Megan’s mouth twitched.

Joseph’s behavior was so absurd she didn’t even know where to begin.

Just as they were talking, the bedroom door suddenly swung open.

"It’s late. Aren’t you going to sleep?"

At the doorway, Lucas stood casually, dressed in a thin pajama set.

His dark eyes were unreadable, his posture relaxed, exuding an effortless elegance.

Aurora froze for a moment.

Meanwhile, Megan, still on the video call, was utterly dumbfounded.

"Holy shit! Why is my cousin with you?!"

Lucas froze for a moment before a slight smile appeared on his face.Suddenly, he wrapped an arm around her waist, leaning down, his voice cool and laced with laziness. "Rora, I've never pursued anyone before. Whether it's infatuation at first sight or feelings that grow over time, give me a chance. Let’s turn this act into something real, alright?" Rora was her childhood name. When she was young, her family loved calling her that. She hadn't expected Lucas to bring it up again. How did he even know about it? Aurora’s heart trembled slightly as she met his gaze. Her red lips parted, but she couldn't bring herself to refuse. She lowered her eyes, her long lashes trembling slightly before she finally spoke. "Alright." …Meanwhile. After leaving the restaurant, Joseph dragged Judy away with a dark expression. There was quite a crowd inside, all eager to watch the drama unfold. She remained calm, but there was an undeniable presence about her—nothing like a fresh graduate just entering the workforce. Chuck frowned, a flicker of doubt crossing his mind. Was she somehow connected to the Walton family? But Tessa had never mentioned anything about it. The brief hesitation quickly vanished. He let out a cold laugh. "Walton Corporation has no use for trash like you." Aurora said nothing. She simply picked up the documents and turned to leave. Not long after, the termination notice was officially issued. When the project manager heard about it, he was completely stunned. Others might not know Aurora’s true identity, but he certainly did. She was the Walton family’s heiress. Had Chuck lost his mind? Grinding his teeth, the manager stormed over to Chuck. "Do you have any idea who Aurora Walton is? You just fired her? Are you trying to get yourself kicked out of Walton Corporation?" "She’s just another college graduate," Chuck sneered. "What

That evening, Megan invited Aurora out for some shopping, helping her pick a gown for Vanguard Group’s event the next day. By chance, they ran into Judy and Joseph. Judy glanced at Aurora with a soft smile. "You’re in quite the good mood, Miss Walton. Even after getting fired, you still have the energy for a shopping spree." Beside her, Megan’s face turned pale. What the hell? The Walton matriarch’s younger daughter fired from Walton Corporation? Aurora narrowed her eyes slightly, her gaze shifting to Joseph as she spoke in a calm tone. "This was your doing?" "You should know your place," Joseph said with disgust. "Aurora, I never wanted to make things difficult for you, but you just couldn’t stop clinging to me." As Aurora’s best friend, Megan knew all too well the mess between the two of them. She rolled her eyes. "Are you out of your mind? You are a spoiled piece of leftovers no one wants, yet you think Aurora is desperate for you? Get over yourself.""Oh really

His voice was deep and smooth, sending a shiver down Aurora’s spine as her heartbeat stuttered. "Lucas…" She blinked up at him, hooking her arms around his neck. "I remember you promised me that if I wasn’t ready, we’d take things slow." That night in the attic, the atmosphere had been too perfect. She wasn’t able to refuse him. Lucas had coaxed her in a low voice, assuring her he would never push her into anything she didn’t want. Now, he let out a soft chuckle. Tilting her chin up, his gaze remained cool and composed yet laced with undeniable temptation. "So… you don’t want to?" His breath, warm and teasing, brushed against her ear. A tingling sensation spread through her, making her shudder. It felt like a feather had swept across her heart. Heat curled through her body, something unfamiliar and impossible to ignore. Grinding her teeth, Aurora thought, “So much for his aloof, unattainable act.” This man was a menace. After a brief pause, she tightened her

He scrutinized Lucas up and down, but due to the poor lighting in the parking lot, he could only make out the man’s vague profile.Joseph turned to Aurora, his tone dripping with mockery. “Aurora Walton, you’ve already found yourself a new sugar daddy so soon? No wonder you dared speak to me like that at the banquet. Turns out you’ve latched onto someone wealthy!”Judy quickly echoed, “Aurora, even if you’re a broke student desperate for money, at least find yourself someone decent. “An ordinary employee?” Aurora laughed lightly, her eyes shimmering with subtle contempt.“Joseph, perhaps you’ve misunderstood what ‘ordinary’ means? Even if I were serving drinks here, I'd still be a hundred times better than some spoiled heir who relies solely on his family’s shadow, only capable of dragging down the family business.”Joseph’s face turned livid. He pointed a trembling finger at Aurora. “You... you... how dare you!” Never in his life had he been humiliated like this.“How dare I?” Aurora didn’t retreat. Instead, she stepped closer, her gaze piercing him like a blade.“Who was it that once vowed to love me forever, only to rush into the arms of his first love the moment he turned around? “Who wrote that laughable breakup list just to get rid of me? Joseph Hunt, tell me, who's really out of line here?”The guests around them began whispering among themselves, their curious eyes drawn to the scene.Joseph’s face burned as if he had been slapped hard several times.
