Isabella, pushed open the creaky door of the pub and was greeted by the lively hum of chatter and the smell of beer.
She stood at the doorway in her sunflower-patterned dress and let her gaze wander from one table to another in search of her friends with an uncomfortable look on her face.
Since she got married, she has only been to a place like that twice and that explained her current awkwardness.
“Hey! Bella, over here!” Just then, she heard someone call her name and turned her gaze in the direction of the voice.
Almost immediately, she spotted her friends in a cozy corner and weaved through the bustling crowd with a big smile on her friends.
“Please, promise me we won’t have to meet here next time,” Isabella said as she took the seat one of her girlfriends pulled out for her.
There were three of them sitting around the table with their faces flashing with a smile.
“Oh… I see someone has grown accustomed to having dinners at fancy restaurants…” Rosie, the one with the wavy blond hair and pink lipstick cued. “Especially after celebrating her fifth wedding anniversary.”
The rest of the ladies cued as they drummed their hands on the table. They all looked excited as they threw their gazes at Isabella, expecting her to start talking about how her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband over the weekend was celebrated.
A smile appeared on Isabella’s face as she watched her friends tease her. But when she had finally had enough of the attention, she put her hand in the air. “You girls are thinking too much. My weekend didn’t go as you are thinking.”
“What?” Venita, the one with the brown curls, oval face, and brown skin raised a questioning brow.
“Don’t tell us Gerald didn’t take you somewhere nice last weekend,” Caro, the chubby beautiful one amongst them said in doubt.
All three of Isabella’s friends were very beautiful and if one didn’t know the truth, they would be thinking that she had carefully hand-picked them because of it.
All three women were expecting their thoughts to be a joke from Isabella unfortunately the shit was real. Their best friend didn’t get to celebrate her fifth wedding anniversary with her famous husband.
“We didn’t go anywhere. I think he forgot.” Isabella sighed, but before any of her protective friends would start to lash out, she quickly added, “But he promised us a trip in two weeks once he finished shooting.”
The three women all slouched against their chairs. They were gravely disappointed.
“I don’t care that Gerald is busy with shooting a new movie right now. If you ask me, he is not caring enough,” Caro said without mincing words, and she didn’t forget to roll her eyes in the end.
“Well, it’s not exactly easy to be married to a good woman,” Venita raised her glass of beer in support before taking a large gulp from it.
Isabella could sense her best friend’s annoyance. There was nothing she could do to change the fact that her busy husband had forgotten about their wedding anniversary, but she could surely try to make them feel better by changing the topic.
“You know what, the bills are on me today, so please don’t be angry.”
Rosie shook her head. “Since you asked, how can we say no? And it’s not like we get to hang out frequently. I don’t want to be angry today.”
“I think I will be better off reading the gossip online. I have been so busy all day that I forgot to check the ‘Scandalous Gossip’ blog,” Caro said to them while tapping away on her phone screen.
No one had seen her pick up her phone since she often changed gears so easily.
With her friends right back on track, Isabella focused on catching up with them on all the things they have been involved in.
Caro was the only one amongst them who had a divided attention. She kept shuffling between the pages of the ‘Scandalous Gossip’ blog and her friends until her eyes bulged.
“What the fuck!” she exclaimed as she used her fingers to enlarge the image on her screen while squinting.
“What have you read now?” Venita asked as her attention was finally caught.
Isabella and Rosie stopped chatting as they had their curious gazes equally fixed on Caro.
“Hold on. Give me a second!” Caro said with her eyes still glued to her phone screen.
After two or three seconds, she let out a deep sigh and lifted her head. “You girls need to see this and Bella, don’t freak out…”
Before Caro could finish talking, Venita had already snatched the phone from her to study the latest gossip she was reading.
“My Goodness!” Venita’s eyes rounded as she glanced at Isabella who looked lost.
“Can anyone tell me what is going on right here?” Isabella questioned as her gaze moved from one person to the other.
---
“T-This C-Can’t be real,” Isabella stammered while staring at the phone screen. Before her was a picture of her husband, Gerald holding a pregnant woman’s hand and no, this was not a clip from a movie scene.
Under that photo, it was stated that her husband was expecting a child with a second-class-rated actress.
“Bella, I hate to say this, but ‘Scandalous Gossip blog’ doesn’t lie. Over ninety-five percent of the gossip all turn out to be true,” Caro said with a pitiful look on her face as the others all fixed their gazes on Isabella.
Hearing everything her friend just said to her, Isabella rose to her feet with reddened eyelids. Her movement startled her friends.
“I believe that this ridiculous gossip will have to be amongst the remaining five percent of Scandalous Gossip that turns out to be fake. Gerald will never do a thing like this. I’m leaving,” Isabella declared.
She looked hurt while pushing her chair with the back of her legs.
“Whoa! Why are you leaving when you only got here?” Venita was the first to speak. She had that look of concern on her face even though she was still trying to wrap her head around the cheating spike.
“I still need to ask Gerald about the gossip,” Isabella answered.
Seeing that look of determination on her face, her friends knew they could not ask her to stay back, so they followed her out to take a cab since they were still worried about her.
Rosie, Caro, and Venita waved at Isabella as they watched her car pull out of the driveway.
“Gerald will be dead meat if this shit actually turns out to be true,” Venita voiced as her gaze trailed the cab till it disappeared from their sight.
“Gerald! Gerald!!” Isabella stormed into the house holding her phone and handbag in one hand. Coming into the living area, she looked around for the husband who clearly told her he wasn’t going anywhere.Just now, she saw his car parked in the driveway. It looked like he was either on his way out or had already gone out and returned.“Gerald!” There was a high-intensity pitch in Isabella’s tone as her heartbeats topped up by a few notches. It was hard to believe that this was the same woman who outrightly defended her husband in front of her friends, but here she was, shouting at the top of her lungs like some crude woman because she didn’t trust her husband one bit.Just then, her husband famous actor husband walked out of the room with a slight frown on his face. “What is it? Why are you screaming my name?”Isabella breathed heavily as she gave him the death stare. “What is the meaning of this?” she went straight to the ‘Scandalous Gossip Blog’s’ page on her phone and opened the pos
As Isabella stepped into the elevator of her company’s building, she adjusted the huge sunglasses covering more than half of her face. After literally crying all night, her eyes surrounded by dark circles were swollen, a clear sign of her lack of sleep.Isabella was still trying to get over Gerald’s response last night after she asked him to choose between his family and an outsider.“I’m sorry, I can’t give you an answer now,” was what he had responded with. The nerves! Her husband had answered her without thinking twice, and that made her begin to rethink their entire relationship.Isabella and Gerald’s union was not an arranged meeting, so how could a man who loved her for so long suddenly have a change of heart? She could remember all those years he told her that she was perfect for him. What happened now? Did he lose that part of his memory?Well, Gerald did not suddenly stop loving her. This was something that happened over time and she had failed to notice it still, she was ove
Two days later, Isabella filed for divorce from her husband and it made it to the blogs within a few hours. But what others were yet to find out was that filing for a divorce was not the only thing she did through her lawyer. She also filed for the custody of their daughter, demanded half of her husband’s assets and sued the mistress, Kareen for emotional damages for a hefty sum.Even Kareen would cough out blood by the time she received the lawsuit.Since Gerald refused to give Isabella a clear promise stating that he would end things with his mistress and cut off all ties with her, she decided to help him make a decision. She refused to be manipulated by his emotional blackmail. How does he expect her to condone his promiscuous nature and remain by his side while he continues to see his mistress? On a scale of 1-100, how foolish and naïve did he think she was?Isabella was having none of that. As soon as she filed for divorce, she packed a few of her things and went to her parents’
“You didn’t ruin your life. If ending your marriage is what will bring you peace of mind and happiness, then you are on the right path,” Isabella’s father said to her.“Yes, Bella,” her mother added in support. “You don’t have to worry about what people will say. You are still young, so don’t think that no good man will come your way again. Bella, you are a good woman. One day, someone who will love you and accept Isla will come into your life. Don’t give up, sweetheart.”If Isabella has not heard anything good in a long while, she has heard enough from her caring and supportive parents in the past hour. She had been so filled with pain and anguish when she arrived but right now, her tears had dried up and her empty heart had already started to get filled with hope again.“Don’t cry over people that are not worth it.” Mr. Smith said, patting her back.Smiling, her mother rose to her feet. “I made chicken soup and banana bread for dessert. I will set the table.”Isabella managed a smil
It’s been ten days since Isabella filed for a divorce from her husband, Gerald, and only six hours since her flight to New York City landed after her short vacation with her daughter, Isla in Costa Rica. Her friends had chattered a Mercedes van just to come to pick her up from the airport before driving her back to her parents' flat somewhere out of town.At first, Isabella had been alarmed by the expensive welcome her friends threw her, but after they all told her several times that she deserved more love than what she was receiving, she accepted the red rose bouquet she was given and drank the champagne they poured in her glass while on transit. With Bella back in the city, she was ready to face her problems head-on, except that Gerald wasn’t going to let her have some peace, especially after he kept losing several advertisement deals.Later that evening, after trying to reach her and failing for the umpteenth time, he had no choice but to go to one of her best friend’s places,
Isabella blacklisted him so he wouldn’t gain access to see her at her workplace.Gerald balled his fingers into a fist at that realization. ‘Bella, do you think you can run away from me forever?’ Gerald was so mad, but he controlled himself since he was in public. He didn’t want any more attention, especially one directed towards the negative. Turning to face the receptionist, he demanded, “I want to see Mr. Richard Cooper.”“Do you have an appointment?” The receptionist asked. In her mind, she couldn’t wait for him to leave, but she didn’t dare show it.Gerald fumed. “I don’t! Just give him a call and tell him that Gerald Falon is asking for a minute of his time.”“Mr. Falon, this is not how things are done here. You can’t…” The receptionist didn’t get to finish her words when Gerald slammed his fist on the desk, scaring the hell out of her. “Do you want me to teach you how to do your job?”The lady released a breath and picked up the telephone in front of her. “Please stand
Gerald did not understand what Richard meant by ‘He would be there to take over every opportunity he gives up on’ he thought it was a mere speech so, he didn’t think too deeply about it.With his uncle refusing to invest in his movies, Gerald walked out of his office and almost ran into Isabella. Both of them held each other’s gazes for almost a minute before Gerald broke the silence.“Who knew that this would be the only way to see my wife of five years after she ran away from our home,” he said without a care in the world. He didn’t even think twice before making that kind of statement in a workspace. He was pinned on getting a reaction out of Isabella unfortunately, she wasn’t in for it.“Are you and my boss related?” she asked, still maintaining eye contact with him. It was obvious the things that were most important to her. His taunting right now could not be compared with the truth she wanted to hear. She never thought that these two men would be related when Richard first
Richard has been waiting for Isabella to ask that question and finally, when she did, he didn’t delay with satisfying her with the answer. “Gerald’s mother and I are related. We share the same parents.”‘Huh?’ Invisible question marks appeared at the top of Isabella’s head. “How is that possible?” Since the five years that she’s been married to Gerald, no one has ever mentioned Richard. She never knew that he had a relationship with Gerald until today. That was weird. If he was her mother-in-law’s younger brother, why were they not close?“My parents had me in their 40s. I was more like a child born to look after them in their old age. They were trying for a girl and got me instead,” Richard explained with a smile, oblivious to her thoughts as the memories from the past eluded him.“Oh… That explains the odd,” Isabella mumbled to herself as her gaze fell on her food. “But, are you not close to any of your siblings?” she asked as her gaze moved back to his face.Isabella felt th
