Lady Meryl Hanover was standing at the entrance of the dining room, waiting for the guards to open the doors. The recently polished, mahogany doors smelled rich and daunting. Her breath was lodged in her throat. No sooner had the doors opened and she stepped through the doorway that her instinct screamed at her to retreat.

No, it wasn’t because the room was filled with guests. Neither did the grand decorations of the room daunt her. The maroon velvet fabric did give the banquet hall a gothic charm, the rows of chandeliers hung overhead, carrying thousands of candles. At the center of the long table was a ridiculous spread of food and silverware. The light filtering from the stained glass windows gave the room an eerie feeling. In the center was a long table with a ridiculous spread of food and silverware.

The rich aroma of food wafted to her, filling her head. But instead of making her salivate, it caused her stomach to churn and jaw to clench. The real reason for it was the sight of her stepmother, Lady Judith Hanover, who sat at the head of the table.  Wrapped in the glow of the flame of hearth behind her, she looked like she had infused new power and confidence.  The bouncing curls of her raven hair fell past her waist that seemed to curl up and down on their own volition. Her face was chalked with exaggerated powders and kohl. Even the orange chiffon tulle gown looked… obnoxious. How could she not be aware of how repulsive she looked?

Judith stared at Meryl until  the other came to sit at her reserved seat at the far end of the table. Sitting down, she lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers.

She despised these lavish parties. People living beyond the castle walls--her people, didn’t have enough food to fill their stomach, they worked to their bones to pay the high taxes imposed on them by Meryl’s stepmother, and they lived in constant fear of her.

Her stepsister, Lady Viola Hanover, sat next to her mother in a peach gown with a plunging neckline that left little to the imagination. The only similarity between the stepsisters was their gray eyes. Apart from this, they were as different as day and night. At twenty-one, Meryl’s head had thick, auburn hair, her frame smaller and her skin paler than the eighteen-year-old Viola. Viola’s appearance had an uncanny resemblance to her mother.

Viola leaned forward, drawing closer to the man sitting across from her as she spoke, “Your Grace, I noticed that you explored the gardens on the north end of the castle despite the gloomy weather. Was it to your liking?”

Lord Alex Cornwall glanced at Meryl from the corner of his eyes before speaking dryly, looked sideways towards Meryl and replied dryly, “I did explore the gardens with Lady Meryl, but I have to say, the company rendered the gardens too dull for my taste.”

Viola didn’t even bother hiding her laughter and people joined along. She looked at Meryl with derision. The distance between them did not dissipate the tension in the air. Meryl gripped the silk of her grown, creasing it slightly. She had long grown used to insults thrown at her in such large gatherings. Viola and Judith never left a chance to do so. But it still bothered her.

“Perhaps you could take a stroll with me in the gardens tomorrow, Lord Alex,” purred Viola. “I would love to enjoy the same old gardens through your eyes. I am sure my company would change your pleasure at the viewing.”

“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder,” Meryl snapped. “The exemplary work of the gardeners should be appreciated rather than focusing on one’s company.”

“Lady Meryl, I did attempt to find beauty… in the garden? Why are you so upset about that?” His snide remark left the girls at the table sniggering behind their palms and glancing sideways at her.

Before Meryl could utter another word, her stepmother cut her off, “Are you trying to insult our guests?” She lazily stirred the mushroom cream soup with spicy shellfish that the servants had just placed in front of all the guests. Her raven black eyes slanted to look at Meryl.

Meryl noticed her stepmother’s movements and her heart skipped a beat. “I am not…” she whispered as she turned her gaze to stare at the bowl of soup placed in front of  her. Immediately, her face paled.

The guests started eating, ignoring her completely.

“Why aren’t you eating?” Judith asked calmly.

Lady Kent, who was sitting next to her, asked “Are you well, Meryl?”

Meryl could barely nod.

“Of course, yes. She is absolutely fine!” Viola retorted, rolling her eyes. “She is just her usual queer self,” her voice laced with disgust. Everyone around the table became quiet.

Judith ordered,, “Eat.”

When Meryl still didn’t pick her spoon to eat it, Judith pounded the table with her fist and then shouted, “Are you trying to embarrass me in front of all these guests by not listening to me?”

Meryl’s body shuddered and she swallowed her saliva. “You— you know I can’t e— eat this,” her voice was barely audible.

“What did you say?” Judith asked with preternatural calm.

In a last ditch effort, Meryl lifted her head and dared to stare back at her stepmother. “I am unable to eat this,” she cried.

Judith’s eyes narrowed and the flames behind her blazed higher. “Stop contempting me in front of the gatherings, will you Meryl?”

“It has spicy shellfish in it, Mother,” said Meryl, her voice quivering. “And you know I am highly allergic to it.”

“Halt your dramatics, and please eat it!” Judith ordered in a low, venoumous voice.

“I won’t,” Meryl shook her head, as panic filled her chest. If she would eat it, she would—

Judith raised an eyebrow. “You won’t? Really?”

All the guests were nonplussed at this exchange of conversation, and some thought to intervene. But—

“Very well,” said Judith. “I can’t force you into eating it despite all the money I have spent in hosting this opulent party.” She placed the spoon down on the side plate.

“I think, Lady Meryl is unwell,” Lady Kent interrupted, feeling pity for Meryl. “You should allow—” However, her mouth snapped shut and her eyes widened. She felt as if she was being gripped by a strong force all around her mind. She couldn’t utter a word. Her tongue felt swollen like a rock. All she could do was watch… Stunned, she watched Meryl, who had lifted the spoon, her face dazed, her eyes glassy, in a trance. She started eating it as if involuntarily and continued to eat. With every bite of the shellfish, her skin turned red. Hives erupted on her face, her neck, her hands and they spread beneath her dress. Her eyes swelled and lips became puffy. By the time she finished the soup, she was gasping for breath like fish out of water.

Lady Kent watched the poor girl erupting like a blowfish. She stayed quiet hoping that Meryl would stop torturing herself, but the girl finished the last bite of the soup. By the end of it, there were sweat beads on her forehead.

“You can stop,” Judith ordered and Meryl stopped eating.

The vise-like grip from Lady Kent’s mind vanished just like that. She looked at Meryl helplessly.

With chest heaving and gasping for air, Meryl stood up. She turned to look away from the guests who must be thinking how hideous she looked.

“Oh dear,” Judith clicked her tongue. “I think you were right that you are allergic to shellfish. You shouldn’t have eaten so much? You may go to your room,” she said in a soft voice. “The servants will do the extra job of cleaning up the mess.” She sighed and resumed eating.

Meryl held the edges of the table feeling too dizzy and when she regained composure, she walked out of the dining room, her steps unsteady.

“What happened to her?” asked Alex. “She looks horrible.”

Viola chuckled and said, “Let her be, Lord Alex. She is going to be fine soon.” Then she looked at the guests who were still staring at Meryl. “My apologies. Meryl loves to insult my mother. Please don’t let her antics spoil your food.”

Gradually, the guests resumed their chats over dinner as Meryl lay on the cold floor of her room, unconscious, her skin burning with high fever and still bursting with hives because she had a severe allergic reaction.

Patsy, Meryl’s lady in waiting, sneaked away from the dining hall and rushed to find her lady. She opened the door of her room, and immediately took out a small bottle of medicine that she had hidden in her skirt. She lifted Meryl’s head in her lap and made her drink the potion. “Why do you keep doing this, Lady Meryl?” she murmured in annoyance. When Meryl stirred a little, she helped her to lie on the bed. “You poor girl…” Patsy muttered as removed her clothes and applied a cold towel on her body to bring the fever down. She wanted to open the window of the room, but with incessant rains and thunder grumbling, she didn’t take the chances. Meryl woke up with a jolt when a thunder sounded right outside her window. Images of the last night flashed across her mind and her gaze swiveled down to her body. She found herself tucked in the furs. The room was dark. Not completely, but there was no sunlight

Brishor swung out of bed. He took a look at Chezzal, his General, tucked him beneath the fur and walked naked to the wash basin that was located near the window. Sleep was nowhere. Over the last few days, he was haunted by the dreams of Loreans being mercilessly pulled inside the forest that surrounded Pembrook and being killed, their bodies sucked dry of blood, and thrown to the wild animals. In the heavy darkness of his General’s room, he couldn’t shed the images of those mutilated bodies. He opened the window and the morning light that crested the tops of the firs, spilled inside. He grabbed the pitcher and washed his face in the basin. The ice-cold water felt good against his heated skin. Brishor tilted the pitcher and splashed more water on his eyes. The remnant of the nightmares disappeared with the coldness.“What are you thinking

Meryl exhaled a heavy breath as her hands trembled in Valerie’s grip. The money was great and she was also used to managing her castle in the absence of her stepmother and stepsister, which was most months of the year, but she was hesitant. She pursed her lips and then said, “I will consider this option, Valerie.” She pulled her hands out of hers and rubbed her neck, feeling extremely tired. She had helped one of the women in the village give birth to her third baby and just so that she didn’t catch infection, Meryl had made a lot of herbal medicines for her. The exhaustion was now apparent on her face. There were dark circles under her eyes and her face was pallid. “It is a fantastic option Meryl,” said Valerie. “Alburn is a nice man. He helps people and is generous with salaries. Moreover, it is just a month’s job. A month will pass in the blink of an eye and you will get a good hundred gold coins

It took them a long time to reach Windley Castle. It was already evening but the rains were just as heavy. Meryl got out of the carriage with Tim’s help. As soon as she was down, he bowed his head and said, “M’lady, I need to rush to my wife. If there is nothing else to do, may I go?”Drenched to the skin, Meryl nodded. She wanted to get inside the castle and go to her room where she would summon her maid in waiting, Patsy. The shawl around her was so wet that she slung it over her hand and then walked it the main hall and found herself staring right into the dark eyes of her stepmother. An unpleasant shock cruised through her body as Judith’s gaze met hers directly. Her stepmother’s gaze was filled with cold hatred, one that had become very common whenever they were face to face. Meryl found herself shivering, which had nothing to do with how cold she was feeling.

  • Dragons And Their Little Mate   Running Away

Meryl was shivering with fever, with cold and with the deluge of emotions that surged through her body. After her stepmother’s instructions of making tea, she didn’t know how she ended up cleaning the entire house. It was as if she was in a daze. At the end when she truly came out of the trance, she found blood seeping from her hands, as if she had worked and worked but she hadn’t stopped. There were fresh wounds on her hands and arms and even her feet. She couldn’t remember the number of hours spent or do all that she did, but it was too much for her. Her body was aching and every muscle was revolting. All Meryl remembered was that she woke up in the dark beneath a staircase that was in a forgotten part of the castle. Her nose was bleeding and she felt too dizzy to even get up. When she finally managed to get up, she brushed her hands on her gown only to shriek in pain. There were cuts in her palm

Something tickled her nose, something with bristles and a terrible smell. Meryl swatted at it, but it didn’t go away. She opened her eyes, but why was every part of her body aching so badly. Flash of memories rushed across her mind. The last she remembered was drinking that potion in the carriage, which Valerie gave her for fever. She had blacked out after that and now she found herself in darkness with something crawling on her face. She got up and her head hit a wooden board. “Ouch!” she pressed her hand to her head. Her hands fell back on… hay? Where the hell was she? Was she dreaming? And why was her skin so itchy? Meryl blinked her eyes once and twice, but the darkness didn’t go. She touched around to understand the place she was in and all she could make out was that she was lying on hay. She scooted to her side to avoid the wooden plank over her head and got out to sit. Lady Susan was up for her morning walks with her maid who was walking behind her at a distance. Wearing a warm peach nightgown, with a light shawl wrapped around her shoulders, she looked soft and petite. “Good morning,” she said in a husky voice when she saw Brishor. The man was too handsome to be true and she found him very alluring. His black sleeveless tunic hugged his chest in a way that every muscle that rippled could be seen. The gold vambrace on his upper arms shone in the light morning rays. Even the leather pants he was wearing were showing his lean muscles. Susan let out a sigh and wondered what it would be to be in his bed. “Good morning, Lady Susan,” Brishor said and dipped his neck slightly. “I like how you maintain your gardens,” he said, hiding his real intent of coming here. “Oh, thank you,” she replied with a blush. “I—” before s

Brishor gripped Chezzal’s thigh beneath the table as his eyes became wide. The girl in front of them was… beautiful, no, ethereal. His throat bobbed when he heard the thundering beats of her heart. His chest was gripped in a vise-like feel, as he sensed her fear. He rapidly tried to decipher what she was afraid of, but then his gaze dropped to the slit on the side of her lips. Her scent—of flowers, of jacaranda wrapped in lemon and fire, hit him with full force. —Mine— He could feel the bond, the chain, the link that tethered him to her. Before he could do anything, Chezzal rose to his feet. He stared at her as the girl held a large folder in her hands, looking fearfully at the man and then at Duke Alburn. She seemed to tremble, her skin was flushed and her face pale. Her deep auburn hair was tied in a loose braid and some strands came out. Those

“What is it?” Brishor said, his face drained of color. He looked at Chezzal who was looking as ghastly as the past several hours. He had to give it to Chezzal that he had more strength than him in such situations. “Oh! Another head is forming!” The healer informed her. “Push, Meryl!” Meryl pushed again with whatever energy she was left with. “We got another boy!” The healer announced. Cendyt rushed back and was now going crazy! “I got two grandsons!” she cried out of pleasure. Brishor came to stand right beside Meryl on her right. “My queen,” he whispered as he held her hand and squeezed it softly. “You’ve made us so proud.” A teardrop fell on Meryl’s hand.

Meryl had had a long chat with Cendyt about heats. Cendyt had told her the implications of it. She had said that it had been hundreds of years since Galdere has seen the face of a royal child. The reason why she was interested in marrying and putting up with Tere’s bullshit was that she wanted a baby, an heir for Galdere. Tere was ready to marry Angus, but Brishor wanted to find his third mate. In case Brishor never married or never found his mate, Angus’s child would have been the heir to the throne.Cendyt had made it amply clear to Meryl that she wanted grandchildren and wanted them fast. She also said that female dragons came in heat once a year, but she didn’t know what was the case with her, because she was turned. Meryl thought it was better to watch and wait. Maybe, she was going to exhibit the same traits as any other dragon female.

He chuckled. “You are wicked.”He pulled out and started kissing her. He left a trail of kissed all the way from her lips to the hollow of her neck, her breasts, belly and then to her sex. Once there, he licked off her juices with his tongue until she started groaning needily.“Ah! I can't take it anymore,” she hissed. Brishor set Meryl on her feet. There was so much brightness around her that it blinded her for a moment. When she opened her eyes again, she found herself surrounded by huge mountains and snow all around interrupted by tall firs and pines. The snow was fresh and glistening on the mountain slopes as the sun shone brilliantly over them.“Where are we?” she asked, when Brishor took her hand and tugged her to a log cabin that stood on a ledge of a slope, surrounded by a thicket of pines, just a few meters away. The cabin looked… dark and lonely. It was as if there was no one around it. With snow crunching under their boots, and her sandals, they stepped ahead. But seeing that her sandals had become immediately wet, Brishor picked her up. Cold wind blew and fluttered her veil. She wondered how cold this place would be at night. Chezzal came from behind and lifted her veil.
