One thousand five hundred years ago, before the Fires of Alira, the great dragon kingdom of Highmire lived in unrest. The king, Sindre, was lost on what should be done. His most trusted advisors and close friends, Sixten and Lochness, found themselves in disagreement. Sindre had never witnessed the two this much at odds with one another.

Sixten, an elegant grey dragon, worked as a representative of the dragons with magical affinities within the kingdom. Those with magical affinities often found themselves with a higher status than those without. For they were considered the ones that were most loved by the goddess Alira. Being a holder of an affinity, Sixten is one who upholds prejudice against those without. It was his firm belief that dragons who have no more than an element type are beneath those with more powerful magic. If Alira did not love those dragons enough to bestow an affinity unto them, then why should he.

Lochness, being a proud black dragon and representative of the dragons without affinities, disagreed with these views, thus pitting the two friends against one another. Lochness wanted equality for all dragons regardless of their magical potential. He truly believed that one should not be judged by what abilities they are born with, rather the results they produce.

King Sindre found himself caught in the middle of the bickering, neither dragon letting up. The King feared that choosing a side in such a delicate matter would further complicate things. So, he tried to allow the two to sort out the problem themselves. That is, until Lochness made a threat that could never be reversed.

During a court meeting, Lochness stood in front of all the dragons of the royal court and made a declaration of war. If all dragons were not treated equally, then Lochness threatened to turn to the other races for help. King Sindre could not stand this blatant disrespect and dismissed Lochness from court.

Since it was obvious whose side king Sindre was taking on this matter, Lochness gathered his troops and left. For fear of his throne being taken over by Lochness and his followers, Sindre named them rebels and said all were to be killed on sight. Lochness, who just wanted to leave the kingdom of Highmire peacefully, was now faced with the wrath of King Sindre.

Desperate and looking for allies, Lochness gathered his troops and headed to the Hidden Forest, home of the Fae.

The Fae queen Nefertari welcomed Lochness with open arms. Nefertari was one of the eldest living of all the races, and well respected. When she heard of Locness's troubles, she offered an alliance to take down the kingdom of Highmire. The Fae had long since grown weary of the kingdom of Highmire, for it was become much too powerful. Nefertari thought the best course of action was to split apart Highmire.

If dragon kind were to live in individual hordes instead of a kingdom, then the threat of them becoming too powerful would disappear, and so would the discrimination. So, with Lochness and Nefertari at the helm of the other races of Midgar, a mighty war was raged.

In the years to come, this war would be known as The Fires of Alira in honor of the dragon goddess. After the great fires, peace returned to the realm once more.

The sun dawns, golden hues of fiery light rushing across the lands of my horde. My feet pad across the slick stone floor. Gusts of early morning air blow through the mountain caverns, bringing a sweet dewy scent with them. Flavius's rough hand caresses mine as we make our way through the mountain to the tomb where my brother rests. As we walk through the halls, horde members pass by respectfully bowing their heads at me. They acknowledge and respect me as chieftain, but I cannot say the same about Flavius. Dragon slayers have long been the enemy of dragons. Welcoming one into the heart of our home is far from safe in the minds of my horde members. Had Flavius not been my mate, I would have felt the same. I watch as Flavius sends a sideways glance at some of the passing members. He lets out an exhausted sigh once again, pointing his face fo

I wake to the sensation of Flavius's fingers gently combing through my hair. Warm shock waves radiate from his tender hands. Yawning, I turn over to look at him, his deep brown eyes glow amber in the midday sunlight like small flakes of fire. I reach a hand out, lightly caressing his face with a soft smile. I shudder as my body fills with the heat of Flavius's emotions, causing my brand to throb in sweet pleasure. "Did I wake you?" Flavius questions gruffly, tiredness echoing through his voice. "No," I answer with a shake of my head. Sitting up, the fur blankets that once covered me slip off. I stretch my arms above my head with a slight sigh. Turning over to look at Flavius, I smile faintly. "We should begin packing for our journey," I mumble.&n

We enter the room, all eyes turning towards us. I walk a straight path to the throne, sitting down in front of everyone. Flavius comes to a stop, standing next to me. The room is shrouded in silence, everyone waiting with bated breath to hear what I have to say. "In two days' time, I will be venturing to the Horde of Fates to gather allies for the oncoming war. During my absence, Norveig will act as Chieftain in my stead. Upon my return, we will ready the soldiers for battle," my voice booms through the room. A male with orange hair steps out from the crowd of dragons. He offers me a deep bow before daring to speak. "Chieftain, are you sure it is wise to leave so soon before a war? You have just taken over, leaving now could put everyone at risk," he says, concern evident in his voice.

"It has been a while, Eleonora," a soft angelic voice calls out. I remove my hand from my eyes to look up at the holder of the voice. Standing before me is a tall, slender woman with hair ablaze like a raging fire. Her skin is like soft moonlight aglow from the torch flame. H

That was certainly stressful, I am just glad they agreed to help. "We have to hurry back now," I sigh out. I watch as Flavius's eyes glance over the darkening sky. As the sun slips behind the horizon the land is cast in a violet hue. The moon hangs faintly in the sky waiting for the sun's retreat. "Yeah, we don't have much time to lose," he responds. Stripping out of Flavius's shirt I hand it back to him quickly fazing. I lower my body allowing him to climb on. With that I lurch out into the evening sky, my wings beating against the crisp air. Sitting the rest of the way up I look around the room. My eyes land on Flavius and I watch as he stands in the mountain entrance staring out at the sky. Pulling myself from the bed I approach him. Walking up behind him I wrap my arms around his waist placing my head on his shoulder. "Good morning," I drawl. Flavius turns his head placing a kiss on my forehead. "Mornin," he greets gruffly. "You we're expecting us?" I ask puzzled. "Please come in and settle then we will talk," Nathalia says. The sisters lead us through the mountain showing us to our chambers. Once our gear is safely put up they take us to another part of the mountain. The caverns expand as if they were natures ballroom. The smooth stone naturally reflects the torch fires helping to light the path. My feet tingle at the odd sensation of the warm stone floor. I had not expected it to be so warm in here. They take us into a small meeting room with a large round table in the center. There are various maps hanging from the walls. We take seats at the table. "How did you know we were coming?" I question.

After a couple of hours pass, we are finally called for dinner where we are introduced to the rest of the horde. Nathalia's and Alec's horde is very small when compared to my own. But you can tell the strength of their warriors with one glance. When Nathalia and Alec enter the dining hall they are accompanied by a young werewolf. He is dressed in a white tunic with a bearskin cloak draped over his shoulders. A large battle-ax is strapped to his back. His long blonde hair is done up in five braids. Three small braids are positioned at the top of his head and two thicker ones line the sides of his head. He has a beard that is short on the sides but long and braided at the chin. His icy blue eyes meet mine as he flashes me a cool smile. The werewolf approaches us taking a seat in front of me with Nathalia and Alec on either side of him.

Nathalia and I walk silently through the dim halls of the castle. My muscles are stiff and tense, aching every time I take a step. I slip a hand up the back of my neck rubbing the tense muscles. Sighing I glance over at Nathalia, "Was it like this for you while you were learning to use your magic?" Her green eyes meet mine as she speaks. "I wish I could offer you some words of advice. However using magic came naturally to me, there was not much for me to learn," she explains. I tighten my hands into fists, pointing my gaze to the floor. I heave a heavy sigh, briefly closing my eyes. I need to learn this quickly, I cannot let my failure be our undoing. A thump to the back of my head brings me from my thoughts. My eyes dart to Nathalia in surprise. She smiles at me, her arms crossed over her chest. "Get out of your head. Learning something new is never easy, but you will get there," she comforts. I huff, dragging a hand through my hair. The u

I cannot say I am not surprised, this suites you Chieftain," Nefertari says. I smile, pulling my hand from the pool. Standing, I gaze up at Nefertari, she returns my gaze. "So, what is the plan from here?" I ask. "We now know your magic types, so now we need to teach you how to tap into that power," Nefertari says. "I have always been able to naturally use my elemental ability. So I am not sure how to tap into this other power," I say. Nefertari chuckles, "You have always had this ability, you just have to learn to sense it. We will teach you how to do this by starting with some simple meditation," she explains. A grin spreads across my face. Learning magic will truly be a turning point for this war. Though it may take time to learn, I will keep pushing forward. As my excitement grows, Flavius comes to mind. I cannot wait to tell him of this. Nefertari stands from her throne, smoothing the wrinkles from her silky white dress. "If you would all follow me, I am going take you to get tested for your magic element," she says. I stand from my seat, following behind Nefertari. The tall brunette has the throne room doors opened with a wave of her hand. We all follow closely behind her. "How will you be testing us exactly?" I ask, curiosity creeping over me. "The world tree is the center of all magic. By touching her roots your magic type will be revealed to you," she explains. Soren steps up beside me. "Are the types of magic people wield the same as our elemental breath?" He asks. Our footsteps carry heavily through the castle. Nefertair hums b

However, we have yet to discuss training regimens for our soldiers. Most of Chieftain Eleonora's horde has never faced dragons with affinities," Alec points out. Nefertari smiles, swooping her hair behind her. "This is something I have thought long and hard about. What makes dragons with affinities so formidable is their ability to naturally utilize magic outside of their elemental breath," Nefertari explains. "Yes, you are correct, that is why we need to train to fight against them," Alec remarks. "Or we could just meet them at their level," Nefertari says. Nathalia, who is seated next to Alec perks up at Nefertari's words. "And how do you suggest we do that?" Nathalia asks. "We teach everyone how to use magic outside their elemental breath," Nefer

Fimrouck grins holding his glass high and proud. "Milk keeps my head clear, not to mention it's good for your bones," he says. Laughter rumbles from my chest while a wide smile takes over my face. "Well, you're not wrong," I chuckle. He nods in agreement taking another swig from his glass. Before he can say anything I ask a question that’s been burning in my mind. "I wanted to ask, what's your plan for Ellie's sword? I know we talked about changing the blade to dragons Ore. But I'm curious about how you plan to add magic?" Fimrouck scratches his beard. As we make our way through the castle many thinly clothed Fae smile and greet us. "I don't think I'll ever get used to how people can walk around like this," I comment under my breath. Fimrouck shakes with laughter from in front of me. "Are you referring to the way they dress," he asks gruffly. "That I am," I respond. "That's funny comin' from a man that's mated to a dragon. Nudity is quite common for them isn't it?" He questions. I scratch my head letting out a laugh. "You'd think I'd be used to the nudity but I can't seem to bring myself to," I chuckle.
