Heather frowned. "Why not?"

Chase looked at her, then at Tyrone's impassive face. "Mr. Elkin, it's best that you don't interfere with the Snyders' affairs. Things could get complicated."

In other words, Tyrone could get into trouble if he helped Heather.

Who could make Chase dissuade someone as powerful as Tyrone from interfering for fear of stirring up trouble? Puzzled, Heather asked, "Officer Irwin, who did the Snyders get into trouble with?"

Chase's gaze flickered from Heather to Tyrone before he answered grimly, "I don't know the details. I'm just following orders. Mr. Elkin, things aren't looking pretty for the Snyders, so I suggest you wash your hands off this matter entirely."

Heather's eyes widened. She didn't know if the Snyders were in a feud with anyone, but judging from Chase's behavior, she doubted he was lying.

Chase had said that he was following orders, presumably from the top brass, which meant there was some political force behind this.
