Alexa's POV
“Sorry to disturb you, ma'am. A package arrived at the reception for you.” Julia, my personal assistant, said and placed an envelope on my desk. It was around 5 p.m. when I checked the time, releasing a sigh. I took the envelope and looked at it. I have been expecting this package for a while now. I stared at the thick envelope, thinking about what brought about the need to hire a private investigator to tail my husband. I know my husband has been there for me ever since I was diagnosed with cancer, but I always had a feeling he had been hiding something from me. You can say I'm paranoid, but his actions led me to make this decision. Tell me why my husband would always come home late with the smell of female perfume on him. Even when he came early and was around, it was like he was doing everything on autopilot without any emotions. I also needed to make sure my husband was not up to anything for suggesting I transfer ownership of my shares to him. I know I agreed to give him the shares. After all, I was going to die soon anyway because I didn't even want treatment, but I should at least make sure I was making the right decision. I did not have marriage on my bucket list even when I was a child. My parents divorced when I was barely seven years old, and from their constant arguments prior to their divorce and the loneliness I had felt after I grew up alone in a boarding school lacking the warmth of a family, I really never thought I would get married and divorce just after two years. Yes, I am getting a divorce. My marriage has come to an end. I sat behind my mahogany desk in my office looking at the evidence on the desk. There were several pictures of my husband and his mistresses in different locations with dates scattered on the table. I must admit my husband's current mistress was quite beautiful. I have had my reservations about her ever since she became my husband's secretary about a year ago. After I watched their interactions for a while and noticed their strict relationship dissolving into friendship, I began to complain about how close they were. Daniel kept denying that whatever they had was strictly based on business whenever I complained about their close relationship making me out as an insecure, paranoid wife. “I know you are stressed about your health and the company, and you're always tired, but always know that I'm here by your side. Why do you bother about my secretary? You have a male secretary yourself, and I'm not complaining. It's because I trust you. You should trust me too, right?” Daniel had said these words to me about a week ago, and I even felt bad for hiring a private detective to tail him, but the truth was the opposite, seeing as the private detective I hired did not fail me. With this evidence, I am waiting to see the kind of excuse he would come up with. I placed the photos back into the envelope and made my way out of the office. It was time to poke the sleeping lion. I sat in my car and brought out my phone, placing a call to Daniel, who picked up after a few rings. “Hi babe, there's something I need to tell you; can you come home early?” I asked, keeping my voice neutral, "Okay, dear, I will try to come early. I'm quite busy today,” Daniel responded. “It's about the transfer of my shares; it's important that we talk,” I added, knowing that would do the trick. “Don't worry, dear, I'm on my way,” Daniel said and ended the call. I looked at the screen of my phone and sneered. 'He was really after my shares,' I thought. I didn't like the idea of getting treatment when I found out I had cancer. I hated hospitals, and if Daniel had not insisted and brought me to a doctor who examined me and said I was in the last stage and nothing could be done, I think I would have fallen and died just like that one day. After my parents, Daniel was the only family I had, and even though I'm the major shareholder of Jones Corp. and it is currently among the top 10 in the country, many people do not know I'm the CEO. I wanted to give everything I had to Daniel, but who knew he was a wolf in sheep's clothing? I will give him one last chance to come clean and decide what to do about my shares in Jones Corp. after our talk. I drove out of the parking lot, heading to the place I have called home for two years now. I took out the pictures of the other women since it might be a headache to find them and kept only the pictures of Elena, my husband's secretary and current mistress. I had just finished taking a shower and was changing when I heard Daniel's car enter through the gates. I took the envelope and made my way to the hall. "Hey, babe, are you alright? You scared me.” Daniel said and kissed my cheeks. I smiled stiffly at him and pointed to the sofa; there it was again, the scent of female perfume. “Have a seat; we need to talk.” Daniel raised his eyebrows and asked with a probing gaze. “Shouldn't we eat first? I won't be going back to the office again; don't worry, dear, I have put everything on hold to be with you tonight.” Daniel said, pulling me into an embrace, “Hmmm, you smell nice,” he added. ‘He must have set his sights on me after my call brought him home early. He didn't get the chance to have some action with his secretary,’ I thought, and I angrily pushed him away from me, the scent on him making me feel disgusted and my peaceful facade cracking. “Stop touching me! Sit down; I have something to say,” I said, my voice a pitch higher.Daniel looked at me with a hurtful expression. “What is wrong with you? Why are you acting this way? Okay talk, I'm all ears,” he said and sat on the sofa. “I want to start treatment for my cancer and hold off the transfer of my shares to you until after I have had a second opinion. I think I should not give up on myself and try to recover,” I said in one breath and saw Daniel's sour expression. He was looking at me as if I had something on my face. “What's with that look? Did you hear what I said?” I prompted him when he continued staring at me. “Alexa, did something happen? You cannot just change your mind about something we have already discussed,” Daniel said, his voice sounding angry. “Do you want me to die so that you keep everything I have to yourself?” The words came tumbling out of my mouth even before I thought about it. Daniel looked at me with a gaze I never thought I would ever see on him and snarled. “Good! Very good. I never thought you would think so lowly
“Daniel, I'm tired. I want to sleep. Let's talk tomorrow, okay?” I said calmly, fearing what he would do if I provoked him again. Daniel looked at me, his face searching if I was sincere. “Okay, let's talk tomorrow.” He made a gesture to kiss my cheeks but caught me off guard, kissing me on the lips. I had never felt so disgusted by a kiss. I shoved him off with all my might, but he wouldn't bulge. I began to panic when he pinned me to the wall, his hands moving under my nightgown and touching me. No! He was going to take advantage of me. I bit him and slapped him hard across the face. “Don't touch me with those filthy hands, you moron,” I roared and began to struggle out of his embrace. “Don't make me angry, Alexa; you are my wife, and I shall have you whenever I want,” Daniel said menacingly and picked me up, throwing me roughly onto the bed and making me feel dizzy. Before I could come to my senses, he had climbed the bed, hovering over me and pinning me under his body. Tears
Daniel's POVI sped on the road heading to my office; what have I done? I parked my car in the parking lot of Cooper Industries and entered the private elevator, which took me straight to my floor. I opened my office, walked straight to my desk, and sat down. I lit up a cigarette and slumped into the chair. I hope Alexa never brings up the divorce again. This was the wrong time for a divorce, and she also wants to go for treatment. I ran my hands through my hair. What would happen if she found out the cancer was benign and not as serious as the doctor had made it out to be? Her condition did not even need treatment. What if she finds out I was behind that too? Who dared to send those pictures to her? Is it a business rival? There has been news of a merger between my company and Jones Corp. Even though many people do not know Alexa is the CEO of Jones Corp. because her father is still the chairman, a few trusted members of high society in Millennium City know she is the true boss,
ALEXA'S POV I don't know when I fell asleep and had a fever. For the first half of the night, I kept dreaming about when I met Daniel until now. I dreamt about how he changed just a few months after our marriage and how insecure his actions were making me feel until I found out I had cancer. He changed for a while, but it didn't last long. He was always busy making me suspicious, until I finally hired a private investigator. The scenes kept changing and replaying over and over again until they stuck on the day Daniel proposed to me. Daniel's eyes were gentle as he held my hands, going down on one knee. “Alexa, I know you don't believe in marriage. I know you're already okay with what we have without putting a label on it, but I really can't help it. I want you all to myself. I want to be the one who loves and pampers you. Even if you have an identical twin, I only want you in my life. Please say yes.” I dreamt about the hesitation I felt at the time, but after seeing that all the
Elena said she was really crying at this point. I sat there, analyzing Elena carefully. Why would she go to such extremes? Did she fear Daniel that much? Is there more to Daniel than meets the eye? How can I make her tell me the truth? I wondered. I stood up from my desk with an intimidating look on my face and slammed the desk fiercely. ‘Ouch, my palms hurt’ but I maintained my poker face and sneered at Elena, looking down at her in her kneeling position. I saw how she flinched when I hit the desk and saw a way out. “Do you think I believe your lies? That you have nothing to do with my husband? Whatever Daniel threatened you with, I can do it, and mine might be worse. You could be kidnapped one day and be raped and tortured until you die a painful but slow death. I will make sure the kidnappers carve your beautiful face and disfigure you so that you wouldn't seduce people's husbands even in hell. I have the money and means to do that, and you know I can." I looked at her pale fac
DANIEL'S POV 10 hours ago*** I stared through the glass window at the scene outside my office. The weather was beautiful compared to my mood. I was waiting for news from Elena after her conversation with Alexa. I have a meeting around 11 a.m. at Jones Corp and I hope Alexa will have no doubts by then, and she will sign her shares over to me. I looked at the bouquet of flowers and diamond necklace I would give to Alexa on my desk and imagined how happy she would be when she received it. Plus, she would be feeling guilty for not believing my words and would be so happy that I was not making a fuss and still showering her with gifts. A smile broke on my face when I thought about how much more powerful I'd be after I have the Jones Corp. shares in my hands. I checked the time and found it was almost 10 a.m. ‘Why is Elena still not back yet?’ I wondered. I took out my phone to give her a call when a knock came from the door. It was Lawrence Cooper, my pain in the ass half brother and
I arrived at the location and got to Elena's apartment. I pounded on the door several times, but got no response. I entered the door lock code and managed to enter. The room was dark as if it were in the night and had a strong smell of alcohol. I switched on the lights and saw Elena sitting on the carpet with several beer cans around her, most of them looking empty. I approached her and called out, “Elena, what is the meaning of this?” She flinched at the sound of my voice and tried to stand up but fell on the floor drunkenly, and then she crawled to my feet, holding my legs. “Daniel, please believe me; you have to believe me; I did what you told me to do. I really told her there was nothing between us, but she didn't believe it. Look, she even slapped me.” She answered, slurring, but her words were still discernible. “You mean you admitted to her that we are having an affair?” I asked angrily and kicked her, running my hands through my hair. She fell backwards, her hands covering
Alexa's POV I woke up feeling groggy and out of sorts. I felt uncomfortable and tried to turn on my side, but realized I was tied up and gagged. My eyes moved about, and I realized I was still in my room, but both my wrists were bound to the bedpost, and there was a cloth tied between my lips behind my head. Then I remembered what had happened. Daniel did this to me: ‘What did he want to do?’ The thought filled me with dread. I tried to shout, but only muffled sounds came out. “Don't bother shouting; no one would hear you.” I looked up and saw Daniel's cold gaze looking at me from a seat across the bed; his voice sounded dangerous, making a shiver run down my spine. I had not noticed him in my panic. I looked up at the man in front of me and realized how foolish I had been. I didn't even protect myself properly from him; I thought he would not take it so far and let down my guard. After all the years I had spent together with him, I still wanted to believe there were some genuine fe
