Laura was sobbing when she got to this point in her story. I had no idea something like that had happened. I started, "Your sister…"

"Phoebe's dead. She took her own life, and I only learned about all of this in a letter she left behind," Laura said. "I'm one of the people who led to Phoebe's death.

"If not for me being so busy with work and wanting to make ends meet… If only I'd paid more attention to her… Perhaps she wouldn't have gotten together with that scumbag so easily. None of this would've happened!"

I didn't know what I could say to comfort her. Was it even possible?

"You threw the scumbag into the pigsty, didn't you?"

She chuckled softly. "Do you know how much effort I put into getting close to him? Do you know what I went through to get my revenge? Thankfully, it was all worth it.

"I knew Winston had been in jail once. I tricked the scumbag into the mountains and killed him. Then, I stripped him and threw him into Winston's family's pigsty."

I, Keira West, was a part-time pet whisperer. To put it simply, I could understand what pets thought by observing their behavior, actions, and voices. Then, I would convey those thoughts to their owners. It wasn't a popular profession, but as pets became more important in households, I still managed to earn a handsome sum as a part-time pet whisperer. It helped that my popularity had recently skyrocketed. It had all started a few days ago when I'd stumbled upon someone trying to scam another on my way home from work. A young lady with a border collie had helped an old lady who'd fallen over to her feet, but the old lady had turned on her and claimed the dog had pounced on her, making her fall. The old lady and her family tried to scam the young lady out of a compensation fee. In a moment of soft-heartedness and anger, I stepped forward to help. I told them my profession before explaining that the border collie's barks and behavior indicated its owner wasn't lying. The spectators im

The police came. I told them about what had happened during the live stream and my suspicions, but they obviously didn't believe me.No, I couldn't leave the matter just like that. I called Sean. We'd exchanged numbers after dealing with the attempted scam, and I knew he was the only one I stood a chance of convincing."If what you're saying is true… this could be a case of dismemberment," he said.I nodded. "Exactly. That Rottweiler has most likely gnawed on human bones recently. I only managed to talk to Mr. Tattoo for a short while, though."Sean turned to make some calls. Then, he turned back to me. "I just checked, but there haven't been any missing persons reported recently.""There's a chance the victim could be someone who lives alone in this city. I'm one of them! People might not yet notice they're missing if it's just happened!" I argued. He looked at me with a hint of sympathy. "You're right, but we don't have any more clues right now. The young woman frowned and considered the matter for a long time. "I don't think so. Has something happened?"Just then, Mr. Tattoo opened the door. I wasn't in time to hide, so he immediately saw me. "Wait, aren't you that pet master online or something?"He looked at the policemen who stood outside his neighbor's apartment. Then, he turned back to me. "What are you doing here?""I, uh…" I didn't know what to say.Fortunately, the young woman came to my rescue. "She's my friend, Win. She came over to see me."…The young woman's name was Laura Granger. She lived alone."Why do you have men's shirts and shoes, then?" Sean was attentive to every detail."They're my boyfriend's. Well, my ex-boyfriend now. We broke up not too long ago. I thought I'd keep some of his things around since I live alone. It's safer, and I'm sure you can understand that," Laura said."It looks like your ex-boyfriend is pretty well-off."Laura didn't respond to that. On the other hand, I was surprised

I was left with no choice but to wait. I was constantly anxious as I waited for updates while going about my life. One day, after work, I came home to see a courier box outside my door. This was odd because all parcels were usually stored in a room near the guardhouse.I picked it up and shook it—it was light. I supposed there couldn't be anything wrong with it. When I opened it, a stack of photos fell to the floor. Each one of them was a close-up of pigs' faces.I felt a little revolted, and my hair stood on end. Who the hell had pulled this prank?I picked up the photos to take a closer look. Then I screamed, "What a freak!"…Sean soon arrived at my place. I wiped the remnants of my vomit from my mouth and opened the door while supporting myself against the wall."What's wrong? What happened?" he asked.I handed him the photos. "I know where the body is."He took them in confusion and flipped through them. Then, he looked at me and asked, "Where is it?""In the pigsty. The

I couldn't understand what was happening and turned to Sean. I asked, "What's the meaning of this? What's going on?"He hurriedly gestured for me to keep quiet, but it was too late."Who's there?" Winston had noticed us. When he saw me, he asked, "Wait, aren't you that pet master?"I couldn't help correcting him. "Pet whisperer.""Right, whisperer. And you are…?"Sean wasn't in uniform. He cleared his throat, glad that Winston hadn't recognized him."Forget it. I can't remember where I've seen you. Look, why do you keep following me, missy?" Winston turned back to me.I asked, "Where's your dog? The Rottweiler."He peered at me. "Do you want to buy it?"I didn't answer. I didn't know what to say.To my surprise, tears welled in his eyes, and he became choked up. "I would never sell it, and you couldn't buy it even if I wanted to sell.""Why?""Why? Because it's dead! Laura smiled, looking gentle and innocent. "I felt like my previous residential area wasn't too safe after the police questioned me that day, so I moved."It made sense. Even if Winston wasn't a murderer, he had to have something to do with the murder case. I asked, "Does that mean you're staying here now?""Yeah. I didn't think we would run into each other, though. Looks like we'll be neighbors from now on!"Laura was living alone, as was I. It was a good idea for us to hang out. Besides, she was kind and loving to animals. She adopted a puppy, and in the few days since she'd moved in, she started dragging me out on daily walks with her."Can you really communicate with animals, Keira?" Laura was genuinely curious about my job as a pet whisperer."I'll let you in on something—when you're familiar with your pet, you'll mostly be able to communicate with them, too," I said."Oh, okay. I couldn't find my voice. I could only listen dazedly and nod. Then, I remembered Sean couldn't see me.He said, "Oh, right. I questioned Winston, and he mentioned that his neighbor would occasionally help him walk his dog. His neighbor is the young woman we saw last time. She's called Laura Granger."It all matched up. Laura had fed Charcoal chocolate when walking him. Dogs would vomit and purge after having chocolate. When bigger dogs ate enough chocolate, they would be seriously poisoned."She's moved to my residential area, Sean. She's staying in the block next to mine," I said.He fell silent. Humans were more complicated than animals were. I could read the emotions in animals that couldn't speak, and I could decipher what their barks or cries meant.I couldn't understand humans, though. They were too complicated and too good at concealing themselves. However, I could clearly sense Laura's despair and hatred."There's no bad blood between us, Laura. Let me go, and I swear I won't say anything about this," I said."You're such a staunch believer in justice, Keira… You can't lie to me," she said.A hint of despair flashed in me. I didn't know whether Sean could find me and when he would come. So, I decided to try to break down Laura's walls to drag things out."You killed your boyfriend, right?" I looked at the unconscious woman. "Did he cheat on you? It's not worth putting yourself through this over a fickle-minded man, Laura."She laughed softly and coughed.
