I stood at the head of the conference table, my eyes facing the room filled with the company's top executives. I had called this emergency meeting to address the future of the company; now that my grandfather was gone and with his condition filled, I was taking control. “As you are all aware, my grandfather's passing has left me in charge of the company now.” I begin pausing to take in their facial expression. However, just as I was about to continue my speech, one of the senior executives spoke up. "Excuse me, Mr. King," he said, his voice hesitant. "But didn't your grandfather say that you had to be married before you could take over the company?" I felt a flicker of annoyance, but I kept my cool. I glanced over at Giovanni, whose face had held a frown. I didn’t miss the shock on his face when he saw the resume work this morning. What was he expecting? He wanted me dead by now, and he should be the one in my position now, ready to take over. I wasn’t going to rip him off his duty, at least not today; I needed to keep my enemies close to be aware of all their evil intentions, Giovanni included. Until I find evidence to have him jailed for almost murder, he stays. "Giovanni," I said, my voice calm. "Can you clarify this for us?" Giovanni stepped forward, his face held in a deep frown. A smirk spread across my lips. "Yes, Mr. King," he said. "As you are all aware, Mr. King recently got married. The wedding took place yesterday, and I am pleased to inform you that Mr. King has signed all the necessary papers and will be resuming his duties as CEO effective immediately." Pleased indeed. “Have you any objection? Step up,” I say, but the room goes silent. I didn’t miss the look Giovanni and Mark shared, making me narrow my eyes at Mark; he moved uncomfortably, forcing a smile. My jawline clenched, knowing these two were in the cohort. The room erupted into a flurry of congratulations and well-wishes, and otherwise, but none mattered. What did was that I was in charge now, and unlike my grandfather, my reign would be much tougher and different. My thoughts suddenly drifted to Riley, our passionate shared night rushing down like a wave of nostalgia. Knowing that she was finally mine brought an unexplainable feeling of satisfaction. Becoming the heir to King Enterprises is an achievement, but making Riley mine is another. I felt bad that I had to leave too early, but I made a mental note to make it up to her. The meeting soon ended as we exited; my eyes caught sight of Asher, my so-called stepbrother and Riley’s ex. He wasn’t aware of our relationship, which I’m aware of. When my father cut ties with us, Grandfather made it clear that he should forget he ever had a family, meaning we were dead to him, so he wasn’t fit to carry the family name. I looked at the hand extended towards me, my eyes narrowing slightly as I tried to place the face. "And you are?" I asked, my voice neutral. The man's smile faltered for a moment, and I could sense a flicker of embarrassment. "I'm Asher," he said, his voice a little tighter. "I work here. Congratulations on your new position, Mr. King." I nodded curtly, refusing to take his hand for a shake. "Thank you," I said, before brushing past him. As I reached my office I settled down pulling up my computer and switching it on. The thought of Asher with Riley didn’t sit well with me. Knowing that fucker put her through a lot after using her all these years. It was never supposed to be him and Riley; he took her from me, and now he has to pay for every bit of it, just like his father. I pushed the thought aside, focusing on the workload. But just as I was about to settle and open up an email, my phone rang. "Mr. King," my assistant's voice came through the line. "You have a call from your family. They're asking you to come home immediately." My brows furrowed in confusion. "What's wrong?" I asked, already getting up from my chair. "It's your wife, sir," my assistant replied, her voice hesitant. "There's been an accident." My mind went blank, and for a moment, my breath paused. Riley. I rushed outside the company, snatching the keys from one of the guards and hopping in. I tried as fast as I could, my thoughts running wild. She was fine when I left home; what could have possibly gone wrong? As I reached there, I met Ryder by the entrance of the house. “What the hell happened?” I demanded worriedly. “It’s Monica. They got into a fight with Riley and—“ he paused. I grabbed onto his collar, “And what?” “The doctor is still running checks up,” he adds. Just in time, the doctor walked out, wiping a bit of sweat from his forehead. “Mr. King?” “Yes?” I walked towards him. “How is she?” “She’s out of danger.” “And the baby?” I asked. “We were able to stop the bleeding and save the baby; the pressure on her bump would have caused both her and the baby’s life, but it’s good she was brought in early,” he explained. I let out a breath, rubbing on my temples. “Can I see her?” He nods, “Yes.”Riley’s POVI was on my way home after a stressful day at the company. I work at my husband’s company as his secretary, and regardless of my poor status, Asher has never shown me otherwise. He loves and cherishes me.Although these past few days have been tough on us, the constant fights and all, I knew it had to do with the company; we’ve been getting losses, and it was hard on him. I was trying to be a supportive wife.I tried to understand.I did.His job was important, and he was providing for us. But I couldn't shake the feeling that we were too distant these days.I growled, walking into the house, the tense air filling my nostrils. The scent that filled the air made my heart drop both in confusion and fear.I marched to the living room, my gaze falling on feminine clothes scattered all over the floor, clothes that certainly weren’t mine. They didn't belong to me.I felt a knot in my stomach as I wondered who they belonged to.Did someone break into the house or what?Asher lef
Reily’s POV I sat coldly in the doctor's office, my hands clasped tightly together in my lap. The doctor, a kind-faced man with a gentle smile, looked at me with excitement. "Mrs. Wilson I have some great news to share with you," he said, his voice soft and gentle. “Yes?” "You're pregnant." I felt a wave of emotions wash over me, but I couldn't quite process them. I was happy, I thought, happy about the baby growing inside me. But at the same time, I was sad and angry, my mind consumed by thoughts of my husband, Asher, or should I say soon-to-be ex-husband. I am my husband's childhood sweetheart. He never failed to pursue me for two long decades. He loved me like I was his life and cherished me deeply. I had trust issues, especially when it came to men, maybe because my dad dumped my mother when she was diagnosed with last-stage colon cancer like she wasn’t the woman that worshipped him. I have adaptation issues. Asher has been there for me ever since until a
Reily’s POV I sat at the bedside, staring at the new IDs, passport, and plane ticket in front of me. My new identity was Maria Sanchez. I was going to start a new life in Chicago, away from Asher and his new family. I was going to stay with Leo’s friend, who I’d be working for in return for the favor. Just as I was about to put the documents away, I heard the door open. Asher walked in, a smile on his face. "Hey, babe," he said, walking over to me. "What's up?" I quickly hid the documents, trying to play it cool. "Not much," I said, forcing a smile. "Just getting some work done." Asher nodded, sitting down next to me. "I'm glad you're working hard," he said. "I’m proud of you." He grabbed my hands. I looked away, fighting the urge to pull away. Anger surged within me. Knowing that they were the same hands, he touched her wig. I reminded him that our anniversary was tomorrow. "Don’t forget that tomorrow is our anniversary," I said, trying to sound casual. Asher's
Riley’s POV Today was the family dinner and our anniversary too. Asher put a hold on the anniversary dinner promising he had something in stored for me after his mum’s party. I didn’t argue or think twice, after all what would we be celebrating for? Lies? And how he has been cheating on me? I put on my best makeup and arrived at Asher’s family’s house right on time. When Asher spotted me, he was momentarily speechless. He walked over and took my hand, looking a little awestruck. Amber’s expression shifted slightly, but she quickly regained her composure and introduced me to her friends, acting all graceful and charming. My mother-in-law, who never liked me, sent me a displeasing glare, which I shrugged off; she didn’t need to worry; I was only here for today. A waiter wheeled in the three-tier cake Asher had ordered for his mother’s birthday, and the atmosphere buzzed with excitement. “Thank you, son." His mother appreciates it as she blows out the candle. Ever
Riley’s POV I walked into the hospital, my hand slightly on my bump. My heart was heavy, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness. I had already made up my mind, and there was no going back. I was here to get my abortion pills to end the pregnancy. Asher didn’t want me or my baby; he has Amber now and their child. As I walked down the hallway, I bumped into someone who seemed oddly familiar, like I had seen him somewhere, but I couldn’t point it out. He was covered in blood, with a large stain on his stomach. He held on to me for support, his eyes meeting mine with desperation. His grip on my arm tightened, making my blood run cold, mortified by the situation. "Please," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "You need to help me." Fear clouded my thoughts as he struggled to keep his balance, his eyelids beginning to close. Who was this man, and why was he covered in blood? It’s not every day one decides to be generous; I felt the need to help him, panicke
Riley’s POV The man pulled me away from the scene and walked us to the ICU, my thoughts still reeling from the events that just transpired. "What's going on?" I ask, trying to pull my wrist free. "Come with me," he says, his grip firm. I stumble after him, confused. "What do you mean 'the Boss's wife'?" I ask, trying to make sense of the situation. The man stops in front of the ICU door and turns to face me. "You're his wife," he says, his eyes narrowing. I shake my head. "No, I'm not. I only signed the papers so he could get surgery. I think there is a misunderstanding," I try to reason, but he remains mute. “Who are you? If you work for the man undergoing surgery, how would you not know who his wife or his family is?” I questioned frustration building up. I don’t know if it was the pregnancy hormones or what, but I suddenly felt infuriated. Speaking of pregnancy, I was supposed to have been done with the abortion procedure. “I do, and for now you’re the only family Mr. Kin
Riley’s POV I woke up in the middle of the night, feeling thirsty. I The environment seemed different from the usual before it dawned on me. The events of the previous day came flooding back—the hospital, Ryder, and Mr. King's mansion. I was in Mr. King's mansion, but I had no idea where the kitchen was. I threw off the covers and got out of bed, my bare feet padding softly on the cold floor. I walked to the door and opened it, peeking out into the dark hallway. The mansion was huge, and I had no idea where I was going but then decided to follow my instincts and explore, hopeful I would stumble upon the kitchen. As I reached the stairs, I heard a faint sound of glass shattering on the floor. My heart dropped, and I froze, my ears perked up. The sound seemed to come from a room to my left. I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should go check it out or mind my business and work on getting to the kitchen. Yet the curiosity within me was piqued. I slowly marched to the room
Nicolas’s POV I sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing on my temples. It had been two days since the incident, and I was still trying to piece together what had happened. Ryder, my head of security and main bodyguard, stood a few feet away from me with his arms folded to his chest. "Mr. King, can you tell me what happened the other night? I mean, how did you get shot?” Rydar asked, his voice low and gentle. I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. "It was Giovanni's people," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Rydar's eyes narrowed. "Giovanni? What does he have to do with this?" I sighed, feeling a wave of betrayal and anger wash over me. "You know He's been working with my grandfather for years," I explained. "He was his most trusted friend, or so I thought." Rydar's brows furrowed. "What do you mean?" I shook my head. Riley’s POVI slowly opened my eyes, groggily taking in my surroundings. It looked oddly familiar before it registered to me that I was in Mr. King's bed.I lifted slightly, rubbing on my eyes, trying to rub off the remaining sleep in my eyes. As I moved, I felt a soreness in my body, a gentle ache that reminded me of the events of the previous night.I stared at my body, feeling a flush rise to my cheeks as memories of Mr. King's touch, his kisses, and his caresses, and how he felt inside of me flooded my mind.I felt my cheeks heat up as I ran a hand through my hair, letting out a growl, shame, guilt, and yet, satisfaction.I couldn't believe what had happened between us. It was like I had lost all control, all sense of reason. I had given in to my desires, and now, I felt...conflicted.Everything that has been happening feels like a movie; giving in to Mr. King made me feel so vulnerable, yet the hint of protectiveness that came with him still lingered. Riley’s POV My heart froze at his words before picking up at a fast rate, my throat suddenly feeling dry, my skin missing the contact of his lips on it. The tension between us was palpable; the air thickened. He tugged a hair behind my ears; without hesitation, he leaned in, his lips capturing mine in a searing kiss. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath knocked out of me. Waves of shock washed over me, leaving me tongue-tied and helpless. Before I could even process what was happening, Mr. King's arms wrapped around me, lifting me off the ground. I felt like I was floating, my feet dangling in midair as he headed towards the room. His kiss was soft yet demanding. He bit on my lower lip, seeking entrance, and I let him take my hands, driving into his soft silk hair, trying to match his pace. I couldn't believe this was happening. Just moments before, I was furious with him, demanding answers and feeling betrayed. But now...now I felt like I was melting into his ar
Riley’s POVI couldn't hold back the tears anymore. Agnes's words cut deep, and I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. I broke into sobs, my body shaking uncontrollably. He had to have a motive; that’s what all rich people do.They’re best at using people to get what they want regardless of their feelings.I can’t believe I agreed to this. I should have never believed him in the first place. He made it seem like he cared about the child and was willing to help, but I should have known better. Just then, Mr. King walked out, a look of concern on his face. "Riley, what are you doing outside?" he asked, walking towards me.I turned to face him, my eyes blazing with anger. "You!" I spat, my voice shaking with rage. "You cheat! You used me! You lied to me!"Mr. King's expression changed, his eyes narrowing. "Riley, calm down. What are you talking about?" he snapped.“I am a ticket to taking over your late grandfather’s company.” I spat. His eyes darkened.“What is it? Cat got your tongu
Riley’s POVI walked down the aisle, my hand clutching Anderson's arm, Mr. King's maternal uncle. The soft music and gentle rustling of the guests' clothes seemed to fade into the background as I made my way to the altar. My mind was elsewhere, transported back to my wedding day with Asher. The memories came flooding back, and my heart ached with a deep sadness. My lips quivered, and I felt like I was going to break down in tears.I wanted to turn around and run away, to escape the pain and the heartache that threatened to overwhelm me.But I couldn't. Right now, Mr. King was all I had. He was my only hope, my only chance at revenge against Asher and those who had wronged me. I took a deep breath and continued walking, my eyes fixed on the man waiting for me at the altar.Mr. King looked handsome, his eyes locked onto mine as I approached. He smiled, and I felt a flutter in my chest. I pushed the feeling aside, reminding myself that this was just a business arrangement.Nothing more,
Riley’s POVI paced back and forth in the room, my thoughts running wild. How did I end up in this situation? I was getting married to a man I barely knew, and his family was treating me like I was part of the family. It didn't make any sense.I stopped pacing and looked around the room, feeling like a prisoner. I didn't want to be here, I didn't want to get married to Mr. King, and I didn't want to be a part of this stinking rich family.I can get into another marriage when I just got divorced three days ago and to a rich person like Mr King. All these elites are good at nothing but cheating; they could have anything at the tip of their fingers; they act like the world revolves around them, and it doesn’t.I’ve made the mistake of letting Asher deceive me for all these years, and I won’t be doing that again. My thoughts are caught short when I hear a knock on the door. Ugh, just the memory of it makes me want to hide under a rock. But, unfortunately, I'm still here, and they won't let me leave. Ryder says it's for my protection, but I'm starting to think it's just an excuse to keep me prisoner. How is it for my safety? That’s a question Ryder isn’t willing to answer.I’ve been checking on my phone, a part of me hopeful that maybe Asher would reach out, but every minute I wait makes me feel more stupid and heartbroken than the other. He was done with me; he is with Amber now and their child. My hands rubbed on my baby bump, shutting my eyes momentarily, knowing the child was the only thing I had left.
