OLIVIA

My alarm clock beeped, jolting me awake. In a fit of rage, I slammed it off and buried myself back under the covers.

It was the weekend, and I had no intention of stepping out or engaging in anything remotely strenuous. My goal for the day was simple—stay in bed, switch off my phone, and avoid any calls that might ruin my peace.

It was also the first morning I would wake without Cyril next to me on the bed ever since he left the house and decided to move in with Rene.

Hypothetically, last night should have been awful. But to my surprise, it was the best sleep I’d had in a long time. I slept like a baby, uninterrupted, knowing there would be no pointless midnight fights. No one to jolt me awake over baseless accusations.

It was one of those nights where I would pay to witness for the rest of my life. As I slept, the thought of Cyril didn’t cross my mind.

That goes to show how much I’ve moved on from him. I can’t wait for the divorce procedures to be finally over to ensure my tot

OLIVIA“What the hell is this bitch doing here?” That was the first question Kate asked the moment she stepped inside the living room and met Rene. She was the last person Kate ever wanted to see.I folded my arms and sat on the sofa comfortably. “The answer you seek is staring at you in the face. I guess you should ask her. She’s in the best position to answer that question.”I wanted Kate to take over the situation like a boss. I figured that it was going to ease the stress off my shoulders. You bitch and homewrecker, what are you doing here? The last time I checked, you weren’t invited. So you better start talking now before I lose it. Don’t fucking mess with me.” Kate confronted Rene, just as I had predicted.I couldn’t have been more proud of Kate for standing up for me at the crucial time when I needed her the most.“I see that you brought your poor and wretched assistant to fight for you. What a coward that you are. You can’t even fight your battle yourself. Where’s your shame?

OLIVIAThe morning started like any other - a knock at the door raising my hopes, only to be disappointed when it was just Kate peeking in.“Good morning. Ready to start the day?” she asked with a thin smile.“No,” I replied, closing my eyes. I heard the door click shut as Kate took a seat on the bed, waiting for me to open my eyes.“We have to go soon. We need to check the restaurant for your birthday dinner,” she continued. I waved her off.“I don’t care. Wherever you pick is fine,” I said, getting out of bed.“It’s your birthday, you should be happier,” Kate said, watching as I wrapped a towel around my head.“What’s the point? It’s just another day. I have to entertain a bunch of people I don’t even know just because their money keeps this lifestyle afloat,” I scoffed.Kate sighed. “You have a meeting with Signor Dante too.”I shook my head. “Even on my birthday, I’m working. And my husband? Where is he?”Kate shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know.”I chuckled bitterly. “That makes t

OLIVIA“What’s going on here?” I asked as I approached the table where Cyril sat with the other woman. Kate’s voice faded away as Cyril turned to look at me, his expression shifting from relief to surprise to a mix of disgust and confusion.“Olivia... I didn’t know you’d be here,” he stammered, standing up.I looked past him and took a good look at the lady, who had lowered her gaze, trying desperately to make herself invisible. “Are you ashamed?” I said to her, and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.“Liv,” Cyril said and held my arm. “What are you doing?”I ignored him and kept looking at her. Her red hair glittered in the light as she kept her eyes on the ground. I leaned forward and looked at her dress. It seemed familiar, a replica of a teal piece I had at home.“I could ask you the same thing,” I said and stood properly.I pulled my arm away from him and glanced at the other guests. Kate was giving a speech that had them clapping and chuckling at what I hoped to be appropriat

OLIVIAI spent the next few days working late for a few reasons. First, I was trying to avoid my own thoughts. The audacity of Cyril disrespecting me at my birthday dinner still gnawed at my heart. It wasn’t his philandering that bothered me most - I had grown accustomed to that. It was the way he made it clear he didn’t care about me at all.I didn’t even know he was back in New York, and he didn’t think it was necessary to tell his wife. It made sense he didn’t remember my birthday - it was just another day to him. I had learned to brace myself for disappointment, but that didn’t make it any easier.Since that dinner, I developed a method to avoid Cyril altogether. If he couldn’t be bothered with me, I was tired of getting hurt every time he did something careless. I needed to train my mind to let go of him, even if I couldn’t leave the marriage immediately - the circumstances were too complicated. But there was something I could do: work, avoid interactions with him, and try to liv

OLIVIAI hesitated, disliking the idea of packing for a trip. Still, Kate was right - it could provide a welcome escape, and I hadn’t traveled in a while.“This nephew of Signor Dante’s... what do we know about him?” I asked.“Just that his name is Adrian, and he’s set to inherit everything his uncle has,” Kate replied.I chuckled. “That’s not very descriptive.”“I’m your assistant, not a detective. If you want details on the man, I can find some for you, but wouldn’t it be better to meet him in person? Get to know what he’s like…”As Kate continued speaking, I suddenly felt a ringing in my ears.I could see her lips moving, but the words were lost to me. My palms felt sweaty, and beads of perspiration formed on my forehead. I blinked, and tears rolled down my cheeks in quick succession. I tried to say something, but no words came out. By the time Kate realized something was wrong, the last thing I saw was the clock striking midnight. Then it was pitch black.I opened my eyes and glan

OLIVIA“Why isn’t he picking up?” I said angrily, frustration mounting. Kate sighed.“That’s the first time he’s answered since I tried reaching him. Maybe you should try again?” she replied.I blinked back tears, the corners of my eyes stinging. “If I haven’t been home for days, you’d think my own husband would care enough to find me.”The truth was, I wasn’t surprised by Cyril’s indifference. His track record of obliviousness was well-established. But this went beyond just him - the entire company would know I’d been hospitalized. If Cyril couldn’t even maintain the facade of a dutiful husband, it would only fuel the rumors.“This idiot is going to cost us our deals. Why is this my reality?” I muttered, dialing his number again. When he answered, his tone was impatient. “What?”“What do you mean, ‘what’? Did you get my messages, Kate’s voicemails? Do you even know where I am, your own wife?” I responded sharply.“You’re probably at some work event or holed up reading. What does it m

OLIVIA “Oh look who the cat dragged in,” I said and walked towards him with mixed feelings. I wasn’t sure if he had come to see me or if my mind was playing tricks on me. I caught a glimpse of the blue hospital walls and white floors, inhaled the smell of disinfectant, and felt the lingering sense of loss that seemed to fill the hallways. I realized that despite my initial annoyance that he didn’t care to make an appearance, I was happy to see him. Hope flickered within me, but I restrained it, I knew better than to let one unusual appearance make such a huge difference. He stopped talking and turned around with a surprised expression. “Liv?” He said and looked around like he was in the wrong place. “What are you doing here?” He asked as his eyes rested on the bag I was clutching under my arm. “What am I doing here? What does it look like? What would anyone be doing in a hospital Cyril? At least you had the common sense to turn up,” I replied in an irritated tone and exhaled slowl

CYRIL“Does it matter? I thought you wanted me around. I'm here now, let's go home,” I held Olivia by the arm. I dodged her question, knowing that I wasn't there for her.I was aware of her calls but decided not to pick her up because I was having the best time of my life with Rene at the party. If she wasn't involved in a ghastly accident, I wouldn't have encountered Olivia. Seeing Olivia ruined my plan. I just hope she doesn't get to find out about Rene pretty soon.“No, I'm not leaving this place until you explain your reason for showing up. The last time I checked, you weren't picking up my calls, which made it difficult to know my whereabouts,” Olivia interrogated me as though she were a detective. She didn't allow me to have breathing space to process my response before tossing another question at me. She put me in a difficult situation that seemed impossible for me to come out of. My heart was beating faster like the drums of war. My feet trembled in fear. I wanted the gro

RENEI watched Cyril sleep like a baby after he had devoured the food I made for him. The only thought that came across my mind was to stab him and take pleasure while he bled to death slowly. However, the plan might seem stupid eventually because I wasn’t legally married to Cyril yet, nor had I gained access to some of his assets.I glanced at the wall clock and realized it was 9:30 PM. Sleep has suddenly become my foe. How can I retire to my bed with my two eyes closed, knowing that my mission was yet to be accomplished?I thought Cyril was gonna leave immediately after he shared the devastating news with me. But no, the son of a bitch decides to find solace in me. His presence made it difficult for me to go visit my mother. I wouldn’t want him suspecting that I was up to mischief. As I thought of an escape route, I heard a buzzing sound on my phone. I hurriedly turned down the volume of my phone to avoid waking Cyril up.I realized that it was a text from my mother. She hasn’t been

RENE"I have spent the last couple of minutes surfing the internet for my dream house. I just can't wait for Olivia to sign the divorce papers so I can take over Penhurst Company and save us from bankruptcy," I told my mom over the phone as we discussed our plans to take over Cyril's empire. It was something I had wished for all my life. And it's finally coming to pass. What a day to be alive."Don't get your hope too high, child," my mom uttered words of wisdom. She got me confused on that one. I couldn't help but ask, "What the heck are you talking about? Isn't this what we've always wanted?""There is no point in getting yourself confused. I am going to explain it to you. How are you sure that the bitch is going to sign the divorce papers? And did Cyril confirm to you that he was going to divorce her? Don't let these scallywags fool you. I know what I am talking about."My mother buttressed her point, but she still got me confused. If it wasn't her voice, I would have believed that

Cyril“Oh dear! If you are tired of your wife, Sophia, why don’t you divorce her instead and become a free man just like me? That way, you won’t have to punish yourself like this. You know I hate to see you like this,” I questioned Andrew’s guts, boosting his morale.I wanted him to own up to his shit like a real man, but he failed to understand the signal I was trying to pass across.“I can't do that. Not everyone is like you. And get your hands off me. I would rather not be infected by your spirit of stupidity," Andrew pushed me aside. I managed to maintain my stamina. Else, I would have fallen and hurt myself.“And don't you dare drag my wife into this shit? Real men don't act the way you did. You should consider getting another lawyer to process your divorce,” Andrew spoke while facing the opposite direction. If I wasn't next to him, I would have argued that he was having a telephone conversation and wasn't referring to me.I moved closer to him. “Excuse me? What did you just say?

I did receive a text from Andrew informing me to be patient and let him handle everything. At this point of time in my life, patience has become the enemy. I want everything sorted out immediately without delay. "Good day, Kelly. Is your Boss in? Of course, he is inI wish to speak to him." I asked Kelly, Lawyer Andrew's clerk at his law firm "Does my boss have an appointment with you? I already checked my schedule for today and your name wasn't on the list. Perhaps, you may need to come back some other time." Kelly interrogated me. It took her a while to respond. Her attitude towards me showed that something wasn't. "Do I need to have an appointment with your Boss before I see him? Don't you recognize me anymore? It's my Cyril, the CEO of Penhurst company. Do you remember me now? Now go inside there and tell him I wanna see him," I demanded. I couldn't stay calm anymore. She had pushed me to the wall with her irrational attitude towards me. If it was easier for her, she wo

CYRILI stood up immediately as we exchanged pleasantries. "It's so good to see you again, sir. I must confess, your staff has been good to me so far. They made me feel so comfortable."“Of course, they will. I mean, that's why they're being paid, right?” Uncle Dante teased, and we laughed at each other's jokes.I ensured that we laughed hard because I knew the next few minutes might be hell for both of us, considering what I intended to speak about.“Now, let's get straight to business. Did you say you needed to see me urgently? What's the situation about? I ought to have a busy schedule today. Because of you, I had to make plans for another day,” Dante revealed.I cleared my throat and took another shot of liquor to keep me hyped. I figured what I wanted to say might require some sort of courage and confidence to pull through.“Before you proceed, where's your wife, and why didn't she come with you? I do hope she's doing great? She didn't quite sound too well when she called. I trie

CYRILIt hurts to find out that Olivia is cheating on me with Adrian. After everything I've done for her, the bitch still had the nerve to sleep with another man while we were still married. If it wasn't for me, she wouldn't be running the company, let alone know how it feels to be a CEO.As I drove back to Rene’s apartment, I started imagining all the insane things I could do to hurt Olivia.I don’t see myself letting her go scot-free—especially Adrian. He has to pay for betraying the bro code. He knew Olivia was still married to me, yet he went ahead and had sex with her.Different thoughts plagued my head. I wasn't even certain of where I was heading anymore. Parts of me wanted to go see Rene and wrap myself in her arms for solace, while the rest of me wanted to visit my lawyer, Andrew, to finalize the divorce process between myself and Olivia. He was taking too long to get the necessary documents ready, and I wasn't pleased with it. I was desperate to get rid of Olivia and spend t

“Where are your domestic staff? I can't find them around.” I started the conversation with a joke to lighten the mood after seeing how angry Adrian had become.“I laid them off for a reason,” he responded harshly. I could tell he wasn't comfortable with the question.“I see. Must be weird living alone in this big mansion, isn’t it? Don’t tell me, I can relate,” I cracked another joke that didn’t even sound funny to me.“Enough with your dry jokes. Is that what you came here to do? Because I don't seem to understand you anymore,” Adrian groaned.“Kate's gone now, so you better start talking and quit your silly jokes. That’s not funny. I’m done tolerating your silent treatment. I need nothing but the truth from you. And please, no more jokes,” Adrian demanded, shutting the door to prevent Kate from distracting us.“Kate is right about what she said earlier.” I made the bold step to confess.“It’s too early to get mad at me because I’m not done talking,” I added quickly, calming Adrian’s
