Not even ten minutes after we got home, Curtis came blazing into the house, having rushed over as soon as he heard the news.

“Angelica? Mother?” He let out a sigh of relief when he saw us sitting in the living room. “Are you both okay?”

I nodded and so did Crystal, though she didn’t look okay. She was pretty shaken up by the incident.

Maverick walked in after Curtis, hurrying as fast as he could—which was much slower than Curtis thanks to his age.

“Hey, Ricky.” I waved when he was close enough.

“She’s fine if she can still make fun of me and call me that god-awful nickname.” He grumbled.

I smiled. I was starting to understand Maverick. Although he still suspected I was a fraud and my marriage to Curtis was fake—which, to be fair, he was right about—he didn’t exactly hate me. His ability to joke at my expense proved that.

Curtis took my hand and checked me all over to make sure I was okay. Satisfied with my condition, he checked Crystal over and pulled her into his arms. “Do you want t

I felt like crap.First, I sought out an enemy of my husband to help me dole out revenge, then I found out I was already entangled with him by merely existing, and now I was taking a secret note from him without my husband’s knowledge. If there was an ounce of romantic feelings between me and Yakov, I would consider this cheating. However, I doubted Yakov saw me as a woman. He probably saw me as a task he was meant to complete. The feeling—or lack thereof—was mutual.Even so, the sooner this alliance ended, the smoother everything would be. The last thing I wanted was another fight with Curtis. So, promising myself it would be the last time I kept any secret communication with the Bratva, I peeked at the content of the note.It was an address, followed by Yakov’s incomprehensible words, “two floors underground.”This was where he had said I would find my gift. If he could simply speak in a comprehensible language, I would appreciate it.….The good news was Curtis was way too busy to

LyraThree days ago.I did not expect to meet the Mafia Boss again. Since I failed to complete his task in Arcron, the worst-case scenario I expected was to be cornered and killed out of the blue—the best one being him forgetting I existed. No such luck.I was scribbling down my dream from the night before—which was insanely odd this time. How could a woman I had only seen once be featured in my dream? Anyway, putting aside how insane it sounded, I was just finishing up writing when I heard a knock on my window. I peeked out and my heart almost jumped out of my chest.I opened the window frantically. “What are you doing here?”The man squeezed into my room, looking comical as his huge suit-clad frame made its way through my window. “You’ve been away from work. This is the only other way I could think of.” He frowned. And who was to blame for my absence at work? I had taken a week off to give him time to forget about me. It turned out, that was useless.“If you’re going to sneak into

AngelicaI had to knock the guard out for this kind of conversation. I stared at the man in the cell like he was a ghost. Well, he was a ghost.“Uncle Nikov?” I asked in shock. He wasn’t really my uncle but I called him that as a child. He was Papa’s best friend. “How did you end up here? I have so many questions.”“Fergus kept me as a trophy.” He hissed. What do you know? Fergus’s enemies kept piling up in numbers. Was he addicted to causing trouble?Uncle Nikov spent the next ten minutes filling me in on how he ended up here.Right before tragedy struck, Spider had been fussy as hell, so he’d decided to go to our house to find something to feed him and one of Lyra’s toys for him to play with. The cathedral was actually an abandoned cathedral that came as a freebie when my parents purchased the land where they built their house, so the house was only a short distance away. He heard the gunshots on his way back and found the nearest exit to push Spider through, then he called for rein

I had a million questions and Spider knew that. He didn't keep me waiting. "When I went to Arcron, I found out she was alive." He said. I wanted to slap the hell out of him. "You told me she was dead." "The Viper made me, okay? I didn't have much choice." He defended himself. You always have a choice, I wanted to tell him, but I hadn't been making the best choices either. "She was adopted by a wealthy family. They call her Eloise now. She works here to calm herself down after the craziness of her home and school life. The customers all love her." I could totally see that. She was speaking to everyone with a friendly smile and although there were so many of us, she managed to make sure everyone's needs were met. She returned to our table and once again looked like she wanted to bolt away. "Would you like anything on today's special menu? We have a buy one get one free cappuccino offer." "Put it all in one cup for me," I asked. I needed a humongous amount of caffeine to deal wi

Curtis “Where have you been?” I asked when the front door finally opened. Angelica had been out since this afternoon and her phone had been off. I knew Spider had something to do with the fact that she somehow disappeared off the road and couldn’t be traced. She walked over to the couch where I was sitting waiting for her and leaned down to kiss me. “I went out for a walk.” “A walk? It hasn’t been two days since someone tried to shoot you!” I didn’t mean to yell at her. I just couldn’t believe how carefree she could be right now. Both the hitman and their mastermind had vanished into thin air. They could be following her every move for all we knew. She planted her butt on my lap and wrapped her arms around me. “Some things are inevitable, Curtis. Even if we find out who did it, they will still come after me. Why not enjoy what’s left of my life before it’s over?”She was serious and that was concerning. “Who is after your life?” “Many people.” She shrugged like it meant nothing.

  • Devil In Disguise   The Angel of Death

We rushed to the hospital as soon as we heard the news, not because we cared about our father but because the whole family was under suspicion and no one wanted investigators crawling into their business. The only one crying about his death was Millie. It was s surprise. Didn’t she only want him for money? Was she heartbroken that there was no longer any chance of her getting any now that he was dead, or did she actually care about him? It didn’t matter. What mattered was what the doctor had to say to Giancarlo and me—he assumed us to be father’s closest relatives, being his eldest children and all. “He did not die from his injuries.” He told us when it was just the three of us in his office. “He had multiple new injuries but after looking into it, we believe they were inflicted post-mortem.”“Who would do that?” Giancarlo asked. The doctor studied us as if trying to gauge whether or not to tell us everything. “I have only heard rumors about this person before but…come with me.”

Angelica The events from the day before flooded my mind as soon as I woke up. First, I took Spider to the secret dungeon to meet Uncle Nikov, then I found out Lyra was alive and being used by The Viper, then I realized that meant Spider had been double-crossing me all along—all in one day. I groaned. Why did everything have to be so complicated? As much as I would have loved to crawl back under the covers and pretend none of it was happening, I was sure I had awoken to a gentle knock on the door. It took until I got out of bed to realize Curtis’s watch was not on the nightstand where he always left it when he came to bed. He didn’t come home last night—not that it was any of my business. Remembering the knock that had woken me up, I opened the door and smiled at the sight of Crystal, carrying a small tray with a bottle of wine and two stem glasses. “Hi, Crystal. Is it your birthday?” “No. I’m sorry if I woke you up. I just assumed you were awake seeing what time it is.” I had no

Angelica Things just kept getting more interesting. We all knew Uncle Nikov—or the man pretending to be him—was too young to be Spider’s grandfather and too old to be his nephew, half-brother or grandson. There was only one possible relationship between them. Spider was running himself crazy trying to figure it out. “Since when do I have an uncle? Why did he pretend to be Papa? What’s he gaining here?” “Maybe it’s similar to the situation with Uncle Robert?” I guessed. I knew I was grabbing at straws. This was not a situation where an uncle had to pretend to be a father to keep his nephew or niece safe. This man had deliberately tried to replace Spider’s father. The worst part was that if we didn’t find out the truth ourselves, he would never reveal it. While he paced a hole through his living room floor, I was going through a photo album I was thankful I had kept for all these years. It had pictures of both the Kastellanos and Giannelli families. I shook my head after studying a

I dug into my ice cream and shoveled a spoon into my mouth to calm myself down."Why would you ask?" she asked. "Are you planning to have kids?"I was glad I wasn't looking at her so she wouldn't read my mind—not that I still believed shrinks could read minds but it was awkward nonetheless."Maybe," I gave a vague answer. Considering Curtis's stance on kids, her surprise was understandable. However, I didn't want to tell her I was pregnant yet. It didn't feel right to tell anyone else before Curtis."Well," she shrugged. "That's a broad subject. But I had all these plans for my kids. Angelica I groaned as I forced my eyes open, adjusting to the blinding light that had just been flickered on. I didn't know how long I had slept. Hell, I wasn't sure if it was day or night. There was no window in this dingy cell and the door was a solid hank of metal that didn't allow any light through it. The only source of light was the offensively bright bulb above me, which had been kept off until now. I had alternated between sleeping and pacing in the dark the whole time and it was driving me crazy. The only thing I could feel was the chains around my wrists and ankles, reminding me that I wasn't dead yet. I didn't know how long had passed since Curtis interrogated me about The Viper. It could be a day, a week, or a year. Hell, it could be ten years for all I knew. I looked down at my stomach and my lips twitched. At least there was a way to know if months had passed. My belly would bulge out. This was Curtis's idea of torture. To be fair, solitary confinement was one of the

I smirked when she stopped, her radius finally running out.“Is this necessary?” She bit back.Yes, it was. This woman killed Miles right under our noses and we didn’t think she was at fault. She played us all like a violin with that innocent smile on her face, all while taking out one Arciero after another and pitting us against each other. However, that was not why I was here.I pointed at her chains. “That will be the least of your problems. Answer me.”She shook her head. “I can’t tell you anything. You’re going to kill me anyway. Just do it.”“I knew you would say that.” I grinned. Someone with her skill could endure a lot of pain.Besides, I couldn’t bring myself to torture her. At least not physically anyway, which was odd, considering how willing

Angelica I needed my head examined. Was I seriously considering having this child? I had bought a dozen pregnancy test kits in the hospital’s pharmacy and couldn’t wait until I got to my hotel room, so I took the tests right there in the hospital washroom. Unsurprisingly, all of them came positive. It was unbelievable. I didn’t know what I thought pregnancy felt like but this was not it. I had expected a little more drama. Aside from my boobs feeling like they were about to fall off, the doctor mentioned I was lucky enough to have a morning sickness-free pregnancy. Maybe that was why I still couldn’t believe I had an actual baby inside me. It sounded like a joke—until I remembered I had to tell Curtis. Between upgrading and downgrading my way through as many cars as possible in the last two months, and spending each of those nights at a different hotel, I had about a thousand dollars to my name. It was a drop in the bucket in relation to how much I needed to bring up a child. I

AngelicaI felt like crap. Where the hell am I? I wondered. I forced one eye open and squinted, wincing from how horribly my head hurt. I patted around for my phone and remembered dropping it the night before. I hadn’t stopped to pick it up. I was too busy running for my life with Curtis hot on my tail. I didn’t know how he found me but I wasn’t going to be able to hide from him forever, I guess. My plan was perfect if I do say so myself. I ran around the city, leaving Curtis a trail that would make him think I was headed for Arcron, then I circled back and returned to Silverwood, where I rented two apartments; one in my name and the other under Klara Arciero. I stayed at neither. I spent every night at a different motel far from both apartments. The apartments were only a way to keep Curtis busy if he found out I was still in the city. Which is why I couldn’t understand why the fuck I thought it was a good idea to check out my fake apartment. I was yet to enter the building when

  • Devil In Disguise   Finding the runaway wife (5)

CurtisTwo months later. Why was I still on this wild goose chase? I hadn’t caught a whiff of my wife even though I felt I had searched the whole of West Auburg. She couldn’t have left the country. There was only one person capable of helping her get a fake passport and he was currently on our side. Sometimes I could swear she was leaving me a trail. Though when I got to it, she was gone like a puff of smoke. I was more frustrated by the realization that the longer it took to find her, the farther away she could go. If she found a way to get a fake passport from somewhere else, she could be halfway across the country and there was nothing I could do about it. But I wasn’t giving up. I meant it when I said I would tear down the whole world to find her. I was not giving up now. I was still staring at the road with my hands gripping the steering wheel. What if I was approaching this from the wrong angle?I took a U-turn at the next exit and returned home. Klara was visiting, which was

The Viper “Angelica left.” I glared at Spider. “What do you mean she left?” He shrugged, letting me know there was nothing else to explain about it. She ran away. “And you let her?” He scrunched his nose. “You know there’s no such thing as ‘letting’ with Angelica. You could lock her up in a cage with an active electric field all around it and she would still find a way to leave.” His words conjured up a memory of that feisty little kitten she once was. She’d been looking for me for a year and I knew every bullet she put between a target’s brows, every throat she sliced was to get my attention. She did get it, but it was way too much than she bargained for. She ended up in my dungeon after putting down one of my most loyal men. I made sure the shackles were way too small for her to wiggle her hands free, and the chain was too short to be of any use. I was going to decide whether she was worth keeping that night but I walked into the dungeon only for her to head-butt me and make

CurtisLyra Giannelli, now known as Eloise Dalton, was as hard to find as her sister. I already knew she was Samantha’s cousin from overhearing their argument but I still couldn’t find her, not even with Giancarlo’s help. Eventually, I had to ask Samantha and I had to promise not to harm a hair on her head before I got any useful information.Good, because I didn’t plan to hurt her. She was more useful to me alive, anyway.I watched as the debate played out on her face, if she would be able to run past me if she tried. She decided against it. Smart girl. I didn’t track her down just to let her escape. She sat down opposite me. “Make it quick. Lyra “Come with me.” Angelica urged me. When we made it to her car, she had floored it out of the Arciero mansion’s garage and only stopped about half an hour later. We were far from the Arciero mansion and certainly not being followed. How nice of her to ask if I wanted to leave with her after grabbing me without much choice earlier. I was yet to figure out why we were running away. Wasn’t Curtis her husband? So what if her maiden name was a little different from what everyone thought? “Why?” I asked. “You said your life is in danger. I don’t want anything to happen to you.” She said frantically, and I knew she was hiding something. “Curtis might just take his anger out on you.” “I’ll be fine.” I assured her. Samantha was my cousin. Not biologically, but if the Carlo she always talked about was Giancarlo Arciero as I was starting to think, Curtis wouldn’t hurt me. And Andre…well, I wasn’t about to put Angelica in more danger than she already was in. “No one wants to mess with
