"S-So cold… I hope my arms make it and not fall off in the middle of the street…"
Ye Mo could not help but grit his teeth as he flew out from the Ye Clan Manor. He sped towards the Leaf City's Ming Yue Sect branch, a place that was on the other side of the city.
Despite covering his skin with qi, the icy coldness emitted by Little Yin was freezing his muscles and bones.
To think that this girl was this capable despite still being a mortal…
Ye Mo could not help but feel excited. One had to know that he was an accomplished cultivator. A mortal should not have been capable of leaving marks on his skin, much less injuring him.
Little Yin was someone found and saved by the Ye Clan! As long as no one comes looking for her, she belongs to the clan!
Imagine once she started the road of cultivation… wouldn't that mean she can make ice cubes fall and snow storms erupt with a flip of a single hand? In the Body Cultivation realm, she probably had enough ability to freeze a fourth or a third of the city!
Thinking business…
During the summer, they could sell chilled cakes and iced noodles to the mortals! Those who do not pay debts, those businesses who do not pay protection money, together with those cultivators who annoy the Ye Clan.. their fates are sealed to be turned into ice popsicles!
How fuckin' awesome was that?!
However, Ye Mo feared that before he could even implement his plan, he would be the first to become an ice popsicle!
No, he could not let Yin simply fly beside him, because one his cultivation was not robust enough to do that. For several breaths, he could make her float, but it was not a long term thing. Second, he needed to touch Yin and use his qi to make sure that the tiny life force left inside of her does not flicker out.
Why was it that the Ming Yue Sect seemed so far?!
Did they move their entire estate towards the border of the city or something?!
"Cold! So cold!"
Who was the genius who decided that major powers in the city could not have residences near each other? Everyone should be neighbors! Isn't that a good way to promote camaraderie?
"Why am I even doing this?" Ye Mo could not help but be depressed, remembering how he was ordered around not only by the Patriarch, but even by someone from the younger generation like Xuan'er. "I may be newly elected, but I'm a proper Elder! I should not be running errands. With my status, I should have ordered Protector Chen to hold this brat, or anyone else who cultivates Yang qi."
After a while, he calmed down. If it were anyone of his subordinates, he was sure they would have become ice statues by now.
"Oh, brat." He could not help but sigh. "As soon as you wake up, I'm gonna make sure you pay me a service charge for this."
The Leaf City of the Northern Territory is just one of the eight first-rate cities under the rule of the hegemon alchemist power called Qing Blessed Lands. Leaf City used to be a place solely owned and controlled by the Ye Clan, hence the "Ye" character in its name, but as thousands of years passed, the clan weathered countless storms and wars. Its power and authority were eventually seized and shared with other newly-arisen powers.
The current Ye Clan had dwindled, losing two-thirds of the power to two other giants, namely the Wu Family and the Ravenrise Mercenaries. The three powers had complicated relationships among them, but usually small skirmishes and competition erupt every now and then.
The Ming Yue Sect is different. Actually, it could be said that it was ranked higher.
The Ming Yue Sect is actually one of the top colossi from the Capital, a sect that directly answers to the hegemon Qing Blessed Lands. All major cities have a sect representing the Qing Blessed Lands, and in Leaf City, it was the Ming Yue Sect.
Upon arrival at the main gate, two emotionless-looking guards crossed their spears to block his way.
"Guest, see yourself out," one of them sneered. "This place is no charity."
"You!"
It was only then that Ye Mo realized he was shabbily dressed, still in his sleeping attire. No wonder he was treated like an ant. Worse, he had left his identity medallion and spatial ring at home.
The guard continued, "Wait till the morning for the gates to be opened to the public. Even so, you have to line up and pay ten silvers to see an alchemist of the lowest level. Can you afford it?"
Ye Mo was hesitating as his face turned red and blue. Finally, he eyed the little girl sleeping in his arms and decided that, 'F*ck face! Life is more important!'
At the top of his lungs, using his cultivation realm as boost, he shouted.
"Tenth elder of the Ye Clan, Ye Mo, asks that he be granted an audience by the sect leader! A life is at stake! Please make haste!"
The heavily-bandaged Yin was roused by the abnormal smell in the air. It was heavy and sticky and irritating to the nose.In fact, it wasn't the room itself that smelled nasty. The room looked bland with its gray walls and lack of windows, but it did not stank to high heavens, only maybe a little stale. The culprit of the smell was those bandages wrapped around Yin. It seemed like they were soaked in blood and medicinal herbs before they were used on her. The bandages caused her to feel numb and the paralysis looked like it would not be gone for quite some time."Yuck! I smell!" She wanted to tear the bandages away, but she could not even move her finger, let alone lift her arm. "Wu wu, Yin is now disgusting! Disgusting! I don't like this!"She struggled to move but in the end, all she could do was flop around like a worm."Elder Sis Xuan'er?" she called out. "Bro Hua? Old fogey?"Where was everyone?Hey, is this some sort of game? Is
'Niu'er? What kind of boorish parents would give their daughter a cow 牛 character in her name?!'The old man claiming to be Yin's maternal grandfather was called Shangguan Ke, the Branch Leader and the person with the highest authority among Leaf City's Ming Yue Sect. After the ruckus that Ye Mo caused earlier, all the high-level members of the sect that wasn't in isolated meditation had gone to the entrance to see what the commotion was about. What they saw made their minds blow up.The well-known genius of the Ye Clan, a hero of his generation, titled Elder in-charge of the city's security for his depth of cultivation and battle prowess, the "Sword Flash" Ye Mo... that very man was standing in front of the sect entrance with a distressed appearance, as if he had passed through the nine hells just to get in there. On his arms was a block of ice...No, it was a body of a toddler
Claim to be an orphan's family! It was a foolproof plan. After all, the little girl is only a toddler. Even if she does not play along or denies the claim, how convincing would her words be? Who would listen to her?Proof? Evidence? Ming Yue Sect could produce hard evidence in a blink of an eye to show that Yin is a daughter of a sect disciple sent on a faraway mission. Who would dare question? Who would dare investigate the truth?Even if the Ye Clan wants, they would dare not. After all, the current Ye Sect is in a very delicate situation right now. If Ye Clan offends the Ming Yue Sect, it would be easy to see the future of the once-hegemon of the Leaf City. The two Great Elders of Ming Yue Sect could be said to be playing dirty, but who among those who have lived for so long not a cunning, old fox? Both Zhu Wei and Yan Yu refused to believe that Ye Mo would send such a precious "gift" to their foo
"Aaah! Grandpa!"A pitiful, heartbreaking little girl's cry rang out from inside the hot springs. Patriarch Shangguan Ke, and the Great Elders Zhu Wei and Yan Yu, along with the others waiting outside, could not help but be stunned.Yin continued to wail. "A-Auntie! Auntie needs help! Quick, help us!"If the maid was awake, she would have puked out blood and fainted once more in anger. She's only fourteen years old! Young, fresh fourteen! Which part of her is an 'auntie'?!In less than a breath's time, the door had been blasted open and everyone ran inside the hot springs, including the guards. Multiple divine senses swept out inside and outside, fearing the appearance of a powerful intruder.'Niu'er' is now a precious member of the Ming Yue Sect, a favored daughter of Heaven and the Saintess-potential that would lead the entire branch to greatness in the fut
"I hate you!!!"Those three words echoed loudly within the empty hallways leading to Zhu Wei's medicinal garden. Yin even tried to push and wriggle herself out Shangguan Ke's arms, even managing to land the soles of her feet on his bearded face. On his left cheek, there was a slightly wet tiny footprint. For a second, the three old men were too astounded to move.Audacious!Completely audacious!A little mortal kid was kicking the face of Ming Yue Sect's exalted Patriarch! And it looked like she did not care a wit that she's trampling on her own grandfather! How dirty are a person's feet? What do they represent? If news were to get around, even if she's supposed to be his only descendant, it would have been completely a humiliation to him and the sect! He would become the laughing stock of Leaf City for years!Shangguan Ke was angered to
Being inside the pocket dimension was like being inside a smaller version of the real world. Just by standing in place, the lands seemed endless. It had its own sky, its own sun, its own water source and its own stable system of heaven and earth qi circulation. It could even be said that if one has enough resources, he or she could wish to live inside a pocket dimension in isolation, there would be no issues at all. This small world was completely self-sufficient.In fact, the heaven and earth qi inside was much, much stronger than outside. An ordinary cultivator was likely to cultivate twice as fast inside, and if he was supported by heavenly cultivation dan and herbs, it could even come close to thrice as fast. The Ming Yue Sect in Leaf City might be just a branch, but still, they had enough resources to invite a powerful space cultivator to create a pocket dimension for Great Elder Zhu Wei. Just from this, the vast we
In a courtyard of Leaf City's Ming Yue Sect. It had been more than half a day since the sun had risen from the east. Now, it was already in the early afternoon. Ye Mo had been waiting for several double-hours, yet there was still no news regarding Little Yin's treatment. To say he was worried sick would be an understatement. He had been pacing back and forth, unable to rest, the moment the elder assigned to assist him brought him to a guest courtyard to stay the night. "Why aren't they telling me any news?" Ye Mo, who refused to leave yet was refused to see Little Yin, was relegated to one of the spacious courtyards prepared to receive important guests. As the Ming Yue Sect occupied a mountain range in the outskirts of Leaf City, they had hundreds of available pavilions and courtyards to be used as housing and accommodation. The size of their territory was only slightly
As soon as she went into her opening sword stance, Zhi Ruo no longer looked like an elegant and fragile princess.Zhi Ruo became a soft sword. She might be a woman in appearance, yet she was also a sword.Sharp. Swift. Agile... Heartless!Yes, she was heartless! She was a woman who loved the sword and the sword alone. She was a girl initially abandoned by all. Her mother had died at childbirth, not that her mother was from any great family to start with. Thus, she had no support and was left to fend off the internal scheming within her clan on her own. If not for Zhi Ruo's superior talent and hard work, she would have been just like any of her father's daughters from a concubine... a mere political pawn without a say about her future.Yes, she is a proud woman. It was because she paved her own bloody path to where she's standing right now! She deserved to be
Scholar Rai held the ancient scroll between two calloused fingers, studying the faded ink with narrowed eyes. The papyrus was brown with age, the content written in a verbose and grand manner, as was usually the case with writings from hundreds of years ago. Its importance could not be translated into words. In fact, it surprised him that his lord father managed to keep these imperial treasures away from the capital. It had taken him twice the usual time to understand the runes. He found himself impressively overwhelmed not only by the sheer historic importance of these documents, but also because the prophecies spoke of the expiration of the bloods of the Old.He feared that the first of the visions written have come into passing. The scrolls he found were written by the last of the true prophets, during a time of historic darkness, the Legaliath Cross, back when magic was free to be harnessed by every man and woman and child. The Legaliath Cross was a devastating war that decimated
"You find this funny, Silver?" This was the first time that Lakas had directly addressed her in a conversation. She could not help but shudder at the slight amusement that colored his normally stern voice. "He could have killed you."Her smile widened.Lakas almost mirrored her expression, but then when he realized that he had spectators in the form of the other three girls inside her cage, he erased any trace of emotion from his face. "The four of you are currently part of the most prized collection of the emperor, but let me warn you. Not all warriors in this camp think the same as I do. You girls are precious, but you are replaceable. Think before you act."As soon as he left, the oldest of the girls, a beauty with curly flaxen hair and foliage green eyes scooted close to her. It was the first time anyone attempted to communicate with her. Most of the time, she was simply left alone in her corner of the cage. "That man just protected you, Silver," Green Eyes laughed excitedly. "He
The survivors were placed in metal cages where the heathens could openly leer at them, appreciating the goods before they were sold. The young warrior called Lakas looked incredibly silly with parchment and quill in his bloody hands, and his annoyed look did not escape her when he was tasked to make an inventory of the slaves."Name?"While the prisoners around her sobbed and wailed for their losses, Enna merely tried to make herself small in a corner. She never spoke. She never raised her head.Lakas snatched her chin. He was scowling. "Name?"When she refused to answer, the bald man behind Lakas growled before backhanding her. "Stupid girl! Tell us your name so that we can be done with this sham and leave!"Elbows shaking, she sat up, gazing at them with tired silvery eyes. Still, she did not open her mouth."You – "Lakas stopped the man with a wave. "Drop it. I will simply write Silver."The man smirked. "Yes, a name befitting a horse."They could call her whatever they want. Why
*She woke up to a strangled sound akin to an injured animal.Crying.Someone was crying. As the sound grew louder, she stirred, slowly, groaning due to the escalating pain at the base of her skull. Opening her eyes, she saw bloody bodies around her. Bile rose, and she emptied the contents of her stomach into the scarlet snow. After a few fuzzy seconds, she realized with relief that most of the bodies around her appeared to be moving. Bloody, but alive. She profusely thanked the good Spirits that there were people who still lived, despite the nagging thought that most of them would have preferred to have died along with their dignity and families. Her arms and feet were bound. Bound with thick ropes. She tried to stretch her legs, grasping too late that she was merely a stride away from the big fire that her captors made. She flinched from the pain.It was the same kind of burning pain that paralyzed her before she blacked out.It was also her first memory. Awakened by a burning pain
The heathens burned the temples. They attacked the farms. They destroyed everything from tiny peasant homes to historical monuments more than hundreds of years old. People who resisted died. People who surrendered died. The snow-clad village of Cardia was stained red. Blood of men. Blood of women. Blood of children. The enemy's arrival was silent; their attack sudden. The sleepy spell brought by winter on the border village was broken by animalistic screams of pain. Cries of people burning were everywhere. There were shrieks of villagers dying. By midnight, half of Cardian population was slain mercilessly by the bronze-skinned men covered in wolf pelts. The invaders relished the sight of the pale people bleeding, enjoying every slash of sword and arrow released as the village burned. They meant to annihilate every Northerner. They were humans on bloodlust — hungry predators on the hunt. They proudly called themselves the sons of Summer. The Cardians called them heathens from the Sout
Even if the Mind Forgets, the Soul Remembers (3)A fair-skinned human girl no taller than the height of his waist, wearing a satin robe that was neither stained by blood or mud. Big eyes on a small face, perfectly arranged black hair in a style of braided bun, delicately balanced features that indicated she would surely grow into a gorgeous young lady given a few years. Her adorable appearance made one have an urge to pinch her chubby cheeks, and if there were any females around, Ye Mo felt that they would fawn over how the little girl looked like a beautiful living, breathing doll.‘And it’s not a sight that should be seen in the middle of a battlefield.’Ye Mo tried to open his mouth to say something, but he remained unable to utter even a single word.‘Dangerous.’It didn’t make sense, but that was what his intuition was telling Ye Mo. His body wasn’t responding—there was no flight impulse, no, there wasn’t even an attempt to fight against the girl, even if it’s a last act of survi
265 - The Girl Who Cannot be Remembered (2)“This body is truly inconvenient.”Little Yin sighed as she sat on the eaves of the roof, looking like a tomboy leisurely camping when in fact she’s trying to reconstruct her soul with the help of moonlight. At first, she thought of leaving the Ye Clan while Ye Mo was unconscious. She felt like staying would give her a huge headache, but she was tied up by all the connections she made in this city. The Qing Blessed Lands had officially entered the state of war.Though communication was crippled, Little Yin was able to overhear the intelligence gathered by the hidden experts brought by the Purple Plumed General.Immortal Wuwei’s timely arrival managed to save Ye Sect and the entire Leaf City, but that wasn’t the same with the other cities. Even the news about the situation in the imperial capital could not be found. That little pretty boy, Qing Wu You, wanted to return to check on his family. Just last night, he came to visit her, asking if i
264 - The Girl Who Cannot be Remembered (1) “Uncle, are you all right?” It was Ye Hua who first noticed that Ye Mo was acting strange. The man’s eyes were looking at the people in the room as if they were people he had not seen for a long time. There was recognition in his gaze, as well as a kind of dissonance. “Huh? Yeah…yeah…” After staying unconscious for days and almost crossing the fine line of life and death, it was reasonable for Ye Mo to be in a daze, and everyone thought so as well. But Ye Hua’s intuition was telling him that his uncle was not just confused, but actually not in a normal state of mind. However, he decided to stay quiet. Because he felt that Little Yin had something to do with this. The young man’s eyes glanced in the direction of the little girl, who brought them all towards the room saying that Ye Mo should be waking up soon. Ye Hua remembered that incident several days ago, that eerie darkness that made his soul tremble. A power that could oppose n
263 – Even if the Mind Forgets, the Soul Remembers (5)‘I died?’Ye Mo tried to remember the last thing that happened to him, but only fragmented pieces of images appeared in his mind. Confusion was the only thing he could feel aside from the head-splitting pain, though he was trying to calm himself and follow the words of the little girl to embrace his memories.‘Since I died, shouldn’t I undergo samsara? Why am I seeing the memories of my former reincarnations?’What happened to him before he appeared and walked around that endless darkness? No, wait, what was he doing before the little girl appeared? He was swinging his sword against—The little girl frowned when she saw the images swimming inside his mind.“Outers.”Gaaaasp!She reached out her small chubby hands and touched the crown of his head, and she channeled her spiritual energy inside his body, focusing it on erasing those images that did not belong to him or to this era.“You are in so much pain because you took a peek at
